    Steve, another thing: I hope you’ll do a long distance ride with the e-bike you’re reviewing and show us how you deal with keeping your battery charged! Steve, thanks for the review. How heavy exactly is the bike you’re reviewing? I have a Velotric Discover 1 that weighs 63.5 lbs, I’m 80 and though I used to ride a lot I’m just getting back into cycling. I’ve put 1,000 miles on my e-bike in 6 months just on local (Lynchburg, VA) trails but look forward to doing some rides on some trails in mid-Atlantic area. I hope we start seeing lighter e-bikes in affordable price ranges as a hidden cost with these heavier e-bikes is the need to use a hardy trail hitch mounted rack. My Suburu Outback has no hitch so that’s a $500 cost (for my year & model) plus a hefty price for a suitable rack. Velotric has a 36 lb model which would be great but it has a non-removable battery. That’s a deal breaker for me as we now live in an apartment in a continuous care retirement community and store my bike on campus in a location with no plug. Certainly not being negative. I love my bike and I’ve gotten more weekly excise in the past three months than I have in years. I’m now just realizing what my ideal e-bike would be like: below 40 lbs, removable battery, and more than 7 derailleur gears.

      Pretty nice Steve, looks like a bike that’ll last a long time. I just brought home a Trek Dual Sport hybrid bike to use on the Katy trail next spring, I’m nearing 70 and I don’t think I’m old enough for a e-bike yet. If I was the HovAlpha would be on the top of the list. Enjoy and thanks for showing it to us.

    Enjoy Florida Steve . I’m the same vintage age of 72 and heading south mid December for four months to ride and golf. Us old guys have discipline and get out there daily and feel guilty if we miss a day. Leaving beautiful but now cold Cape Cod to enjoy the winter although Florida riding is totally flat and really quite boring. Keep in shape for your big ride! Steve, you’re going to love the Natchez Trace. I rode it in April 2019 but had to cut it short in Jackson, MS because of severe weather. Steve, I am glad to see you riding a normal bike again. I would like to comment about e-bikes as they are useful for people who really need them. This video was really nice. I believe young teenagers who are riding e-bikes and other electric assisted vehicles should be riding normal bikes and not these electric ones. They really need the exercise but the parents normally just give in to them because they want to please them. Electric vehicles are great for people who really need them. I am your age and riding my bike everyday helps me to feel better. I have my health issues but the riding helps me to feel better. Please Steve, I would like to share some thoughts about the current situation in the USA in a private message. How can I connect you? Email, messenger, or Skype? Best regards, your follower. Maurice

    In my experience of life something becomes easy only in hindsight when doing something that is not easy. Following a bike crash concussion and four years off the bike I'm currently finding it very uncomfortable to get out and begin re-training my cycle fitness back up to 60 miles per day. I keep bonking even when regularly snacking. I'm finding the training in a cold and damp winter particularly uncomfortable but I did it in 2017-18 so I trust I can do it in 2024 also. I trust the process, no pain, no gain, and that if I one day cycle and suffer 80, 90 or 100 miles a number of times then 60 miles in a day will seem easy to me. I have been watching some of the spectacular endurance biking channels to put my own current suffering even doing 30+ miles in perspective and motivate me not to complain. I never felt healthier than in 2019 after two years of cycling. On the other hand I have never felt more unhealthy than after my second concussion. Win some loose some is my experience. Yes I keep intending to also resume sitting meditation, possibly to help me sleep at night. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Mark and thank you for your comment. I find that slow and steady training gets me there. I use lower gears with a high cadence. That prevents strain and keeps me going. Thank again and have a great day, Steve

    • @Mark8v29
      @Mark8v29 10 дней назад

      @@steveretiredandcycling Thanks Steve, BTW have you ever had trouble not over-exerting? I use low gear ratios and high cadence on the hills but find that as soon as I'm no longer on the flat by heart rate goes very high 90-100% of my theoretical maximum. I live in a hilly place where a ride of any length consists of up hill for 5-15 minutes and then downhill for 5-1 minute; up and down up and down up and down. On a 5 hour ride I'm at or near max heart rate for 3 hours according to my heart rate monitor. It wouldn't concern me too much as I'd hope my heart rate would decrease as my fitness returned, but I was unlucky enough to stumble upon a youtube video stating endurance cycling can be harmful to the heart in the middle aged and older. The skeptic in me says its big pharma searching for another way to sell drugs to prevent such harm. I'd like to be able to cycle mainly in zone 2 but think I'm in zone 3, 4 or 5 most of the time without any conscious effort to exert myself. I'm often cycling at 2-5 mph up hills and happy with that but my heart still goes fast. I wonder what other cyclists experience, particularly the middle aged and older or those getting back into cycling.

    Yours is a timely video for me, Steve - thanks. I retire in Aug. 2025, and in fall 2025 plan to fly to So. Korea with my new Brompton to ride their 633km "Four Rivers Ride" over a week's time. I just re-started my riding, after a fourth hand surgery and physical therapy to address some knee and hip pains, to get back into shape and start logging increasingly higher mileage rides so I can complete that long-distance ride in good form. The thought of experiencing this ride and So. Korea's backcountry is #1 on my bucket list and has me inspired! Thanks for the additional motivation, Steve!

      This year it was June 22nd. They haven't announced the schedule for 2025 but it should be around the same date. It's a good time and we stop at Whole Foods in Avon for lunch.

    Very good! As someone who is turning 69 years old, I agree with your comment about speed and racing. Now retired and living in SWFL, many cyclists here ride much faster than me. I'm still searching for other riders my speed. 🙂 Thanks!

      Hi Craig and thanks for your comment. Slow and steady keep our health going in the right direction. This week I'm visiting family in Melbourne FL. Would love to ride with you but it's a busy week and you're probably too far away. When I'm hear I borrow my daughter's bike for a daily ten mile ride. Going out for my ride in 15 mins. Nice pic of you at mile marker 0. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

    You should be proud of yourself Steve of the accomplishments you’ve had and how far you come. As I was listening to your story along with the lady I felt the sense of being proud for you. Thanks for bringing us along!

      Hi Terry, good to hear from you again! Thank you for the kind words. I enjoyed the interview. I was invited on the show because the interviewer (Lisa Wexler) saw a 1/2 page story about my escapades in the local Waterbury Republican American a Connecticut newspaper. It was a good story written by their sports writer. Thanks again and have an awesome day, Steve
