Really enjoyed this video. I'm 71 years old. The only time I cycle at your speed is when I'm being attacked by a loose dog. There are a lot of loose dogs here in Texas. Stay safe.
Love your approach to all of it, Steve! I'm still at it at 71. Hit 6K miles for the year just yesterday. Still able to hang with 20+ mph average for 60 or 70 miles with the Saturday group ride. Been riding for 40 years and have never enjoyed it so much!
I am 70 years old and I ride a Cannondale CAAD 8 I brought in 2013. Love my bike and I love to ride it. Don't count us old people out just yet just because we're old we're still getting at it. Ride on!
I have always been fast for my age...relatively, not elite level. About 2 weeks ago, I met up with my 76 y.o. buddy who is a retired commercial pilot. He still rides an uber slammed carbon bike with deep section wheels. No steerer extender or riser stem. Slammed. I am 69 y.o. I go back aways with this rider and he has always been stronger...a bit stronger than me and I am a fair amount faster than most riders my age. I look in my early 50's and grew up a competitive swimmer. We rode 20 miles averaging 22 mph...no wind, me in his draft with my heart rate about 160 bps. His was around 135 bpm. He has freakish V02 max aka heart and lung capacity. We both have resting heart rate in our 40's. I can outsprint him but he would drop me in a distance race because he has better endurance. He trains a lot and I ride a lot as well, but the rest is in the genes. His father lived to be 106. Ride safe.
Hi Ted, my Garmin said 17 MPH but I forgot to pause it a few times so that threw the average off a bit. Probably a little over 17 MPH. Without splitting hairs it was a nice ride whatever the speed. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

Absolutely awesome. At 47yo I have been riding for a couple years now. I hoped that I am as blessed as you are to still be riding at 70. I just found your channel and subscribed. You are an inspiration Kind Sir. You have a very good day as well.

17 avg. is a good clip for any age! I mostly ride road as fast as I can. I ride alone and this makes the effort harder without other people to draft! I am a 60 year old and on a good day I ride 17.5-18 avg. Of course this depends on the route and hills, most rides include 1,000+ feet of climbing. Nothing compares to going fast on a bicycle! It's as close to flying under your own power as you'll get! Keep up the great work! Your an inspiration!!
Hi there and thank you for watching and the comment. I totally agree about speeding along on a road bike. It's a wonderful feeling. Thanks again and keep pedaling, Steve
Heck yeah!! Im planning to ride as long as i can just as yourself. Im in my mid-50's and pedal slamming my road bike every day of the week. This year i was fortunate enough to ride with some friends in Germany. They are 20 years younger, and were surprised when i kept up with them on their own turf! Its a great motivator to share riding with those younger than me and those who may 'have a few years on me'. Glad i found your channel
Hi Steve. Thanks for another inspiring video. Makes me want to get on a lightweight road bike to see how fast I can go. I'd be happy if I could Avg even 15 mph. Prices for road bikes in bike shops are a little too rich for my tastes. I also like being able to take in nature as I ride, so my present bike, even though it is a lot slower, is still rewarding to ride. I'm glad that you got to meet Ryan Van Duzer in person. I've seen some of his videos, and I would say he and you are some cool guys. Take care Steve
Hi again and great to hear from you. I hope you are doing well. Yes, road bike prices are ridiculous. Not to mention the price of Shimano components. I also gravitate to my slower bikes since it's not how fast we can go when out enjoying the day. It was fun though to get the dust off an old fast bike. Not something I do very often. Meeting Duzer was fun and to listen to his stories was inspiring. Thanks again and have a great weekend, Steve
This great Steve. I haven't been on my bike is 3 months .I have back issues , Spinal Stenosis. I have had 3 injections. I am better but still may have surgery .I stated back riding on January the 4th. I got out for about 7 miles about 32 minutes. When I was riding regularly ,I would go out and do about 30 miles or about a 100 miles a week. It really feels great to be backout on the bike ,except for my backside which need to get reconditioned to the saddle! I love my rode bike !
Hi Greg and thank you for your comment! I hope your back issues are sorted out soon. Riding your bike is great therapy as long as it does not make your back problem worse. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Impressive Steve! I can’t imagine 30 mph, that must be exhilarating, especially with the northeast landscape passing by. Last week we were in Pompano, Fla. We drove by the big tree that overhangs A1A, which was a stop you filmed on your ride from Key West to South Carolina. I told my wife that Steve was here, then she replied who’s Steve? She wasn’t too impressed until I told her the long journey you did on your bike. Thanks for the video

Great ride, Steve. I took up cycling 5 yrs ago, I’m 61 now. Try to do 100K a week. The bike is on the trainer in the basement for the winter, here is Southern Ontario.

Great ride and video, Steve. Came across your century video, and I've ridden that path many times. I'm from Easthampton, Ma. At 77, I don't do the long rides any longer, spend my time going up hill. A faster form of a workout and I live in a hilly area. I recently put my old Mavic wheel set, with Tufo Tubulars , to ride for the remainder of the season. Those are 20mm ! So much fun . Thanks. KB
Hi Ken and thanks for watching. I also have a set of old Mavic's with Continental Tubulars. Mounted on my Fuji Opus 3. I need to take that bike out for a spin. Thanks again and happy cycling, Steve
Hi Mj and thanks for watching! The old HED wheels are rated for 21mm but I still run 23mm to get the aero effect. Very stiff ride but fast (for me). Take care and have a great day, Steve
I thought that area looked familiar so I looked it up on the map. You probably know this already, but the Adventure Cycling Atlantic Coast route goes right through Pleasant Valley, CT, and I remember it well from my cross-country ride back in 2007 from San Francisco to Boston. You probably have seen a few touring cyclists on the roads around there every once in a while. As far as the need for speed, I agree with you. I ride daily on my "beater bike", an old Diamondback hybrid with fat tires, comfy seat, and rear rack, but every once in a while I feel the need to crank it up a notch and go for Strava PRs on a 20-pound Cannondale Synapse road bike that sits in the garage mainly unused.
Hi John and thanks for watching and the comment. Yes I do see the occasional bicycle tourist cycling through the area. It's a beautiful place to ride. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Cool video, try some Continental Grand Prix 4 season tyres in 25c on those wheels. You won't regret it, Gatorskins feel dead by comparison and lack the grip that the GPs do. Puncture resistance is fantastic too
The bicycle is one of man’s greatest inventions ..Im71 do the gym everyday and cycle a lot too in the day. Blood pressure has dropped over the years and sleep better…
Hi there and I totally agree. Since I started serious exercise 13 years ago, my blood pressure has also dropped along with my other vitals. The bicycle can be a lifesaver. Thanks for the comment and all the best, Steve
Hi Gilmar and thanks for watching and your comment! You have a beautiful country. Haven't been there in 10 years, however I enjoyed my time in Sao Paulo and Manaus. Have a great week and all the best, Steve
What a fun ride, Steve. That was a great picture of you and Ryan. Since we are supposedly going to have warmer than avg temps this winter because of El Niño, I am going to try to ride all winter. I have the gear, lets get these bones on the bike and ride cyclist 🚴
Steve, you crack me up!! Love the ride and you inspire me every time I watch one of your videos...I forgot to ask you, will you ever ride in a RAGBRAI?
Hi again Amy and great to hear from you! I hope all is well. I am seriously considering RAGBRAI in 2024. Looked at their website and opened an account. Looking at my schedule today. Did you ride it this year? Let me know about your experience. Thanks again Amy and have a super day, Steve
59 here. I love speed. Faster the better. I ditched my road bike for a hybrid for comfort and never looked back. I have 700c x 38c on my hybrid and it's just as fast as my roadie that had 700 x 28c. I ride 8 miles every day as fast as I can on the flats. Average speed 19mph/29kph.
Hi Steve greetings from the UK English Lake District, fairly similar colour trees here at this time of the year, l've gone soft bought a road ebike, I'm 74 but still ride my standard bike some times, love the ebike. Had a heart by pass 6 years ago don't want to ride to hard just in case the stitches come loose just joking 😊
@@steveretiredandcycling I used them for a year myself, after shredding the “stock” Bontrager R1s that my Trek came with after 2500 miles. Gatorskins are certainly commendable for their durability, they’re just not terribly enjoyable to ride on IMHO - and a torture to pull off the rims if you get a flat on the road. While punctures are rare, no tire is immune to pinch flats.
Hi there and thanks for the comment! I live in a beautiful area and by comparison the road I was on is relatively flat compared to the many hills we have in Northwest Connecticut. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hi Joe and thanks for the comment. I bought the vehicle because of the lay flat seats that fold into the floor. I roll our bikes in with no problem. Great ride too. Thanks again, Steve
Inspiring video. Do you have any tips for staying warm? I have trouble making myself get out on the bike when it’s below 60°F. I have room to stow only one very thin layer. Also, I’d love to know more about your camera and how it’s mounted while you’re filming.
Hi Jain and thanks for watching. I dress in layers and use full fingered gloves when its below 55F. A very lightweight small backpack is useful to stow extra clothes. I use two cameras on most of my rides. A DJI Osmo 4 action camera either mounted on my handlebars, neck mount as you see in this video or handheld on a selfie stick. My second camera is a Sony ZV-1 point and shoot camera. I use this camera for video off the bike although I'm finding that I use the DJI for most everything since it's light and easier to use. An iphone also makes a great camera since the technology has improved. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
I can't remember how many years it's been since I rode 23s. A LONG time ago. I rode Michelin Axial Pro 25s for many years, but I haven't ridden anything narrower than 30, even on my full carbon road bike, for a decade or so.
Hi Joe and thanks for watching. The bike is almost 11 years old and the old HED aero wheels are rated to perform beast with 21mm tires. They do okay with 23's. Not a very supple ride. But a fun ride. Thanks again and have a good day, Steve
I enjoyed your video, I'm increasing my speed, but I don't have a road bike, as the streets in my city in Brazil have lots of potholes. I had one and had lots of flats, so I traded mine for a mountain bike. I can't reach those speeds, but I am trying my best to get there. Best regards.
I'm 75 ish and being I don't have the need for speed I ride a mountain bike aka MTB :-) I enjoy nature rides, exploring and making youtube videos of my rides.
Suggest strobe light on the ftont: I live in a community dominated by retirees and there have been many times when I approach an intersection that they just do NOT "see me". Has not happened since I added a strobe light on the handle bars>
Hi there and thanks for your comment. I always ride with a "blinking" white light on the front of my bicycles. Started that habit years ago when someone coming toward me on a bike trail wasn't paying attention and we almost had a head on collision. And as you mentioned, some older (and younger) drivers seem blind to bicycles. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Ride till you can no longer get on and safely balance...why not....Just no longer on roads. With so many utter idiots driving these days, I made a personal choice...no more road cycling. I salute you for maintaining that form of cycling, but too many close calls at a similar age has made me reconsider what the literal impact hitting the ground would be like, and no, I am not scared, just not into challenging vehicles. May I add, this decision was not arrived at by my own errors while cycling on everyday roads. Stay safe..I'll be on a path or similar type place, but not on a main road...A mountain bike, a converted road bike, and an electric bike have replaced my lovely road bikes....Ride on all...be safe out there.
Hi there and thanks for the question. I do sweat while cycling. However not nearly as much as when I was 30. Part of the ageing process. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Have either of you considered a garmin varia radar? It makes a good tail light as well as warning you about cars coming up behind on your head unit (garmin/wahoo/phone). It doesn't necessarily replace a mirror because the mirror lets you see what's coming without turning your head, but I find the radar makes quiet country roads more relaxing because you don't have to keep checking behind you since you can rely on the radar to warn you.
@@donbarnard82 thanks. I've had the varia radar for 3 years but have only used it once on a ride during COVID where there were few cars on the road. It worked great but 98% of my riding is car free bike trails or closed highways so therefore mirror would be good for me to track faster cyclists. Maybe the radar would work for that but is marketed to detect cars.

Hi John and thanks for watching and the comment. Yes I do see the occasional bicycle tourist cycling through the area. It's a beautiful place to ride. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Thank you for sharing your biking experience. Really enjoyed following you. David R
Hi David and thanks for watching! Enjoy your day, Steve
Nice ride , good thing there is little traffic on those shoulder less roads.
Agreed. The road gets very little traffic
5:03 "Make way! Make way! Ye bloody peasants! The KING cometh!"
Thanks, you made me laugh out loud!
Great job 👍 im 61 years old and 17.9mph avg for 22 mi. Is my best this year , like everyone else i used to be faster and well.... Younger 😊
Hi Jim and thanks for sharing. 17.9 for 22 miles is an awesome pace. We may not be young but we are having fun. Take care, Steve
Cool video, try some Continental Grand Prix 4 season tyres in 25c on those wheels. You won't regret it, Gatorskins feel dead by comparison and lack the grip that the GPs do. Puncture resistance is fantastic too
Thanks for the advice. I’ll give them a try
Thanks for the comment and all the best, Steve
nice video i am 60 and ride every day.....here's to the older folks...see you out there
Thanks Chuck! Have a great day, Steve
Hi, thak you for sharing - By Brasil
Hi Gilmar and thanks for watching and your comment! You have a beautiful country. Haven't been there in 10 years, however I enjoyed my time in Sao Paulo and Manaus. Have a great week and all the best, Steve
I know East and West River Road very well. I wonder if we have ever crossed paths in the past.
Keep the pedal’s turning Steve.
Hi there and thanks for watching. I'm sure we've crossed paths over the years. It's a beautiful ride. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
What a fun ride, Steve. That was a great picture of you and Ryan. Since we are supposedly going to have warmer than avg temps this winter because of El Niño, I am going to try to ride all winter. I have the gear, lets get these bones on the bike and ride cyclist 🚴
Hi again and nice to hear from you! This was a fun ride and hopefully we will have a mild winter. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hey, just found your channel and very much enjoyed your video......
@@davlddemarest2626 Hey Davld, thanks for watching! Have a great day, Steve
Kudo's I still ride at 76, 2 new knees, new rt shoulder and fused SI joint, would go crazy if I couldn't, enjoy the ride
Hi there and thanks for sharing. Sounds like you are the bionic man. Whatever it takes! Thanks for the comment, Steve
Where do you ride Steve?....very nice road & scenery .....
That ride was in NW Connecticut in Riverton. Beautiful roads and not much traffic. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Hi there and thanks for watching and your comment! Sounds like you have a good setup for speed! Keep pedaling and all the best, Steve
The Lake District is considerably hillier than the terrain in the video. I’d definitely need an e-bike there.
Hi Jain and thanks for watching and the comment! Ebikes are great. I may review one in the near future. Take care and all the best, Steve
You’re a hero! 🚴💪🏻☺️👏🏻Gatorskins are neither fast nor supple but I see you ride on some pretty choppy asphalt so I get it. 😉
Hi Victor, you're correct. The Gatorskins are durable but heavy and stiff. Thanks for the nice comment. Have a great weekend, Steve
What a beautiful part of the world. 👍 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Hi Robyn and thanks for watching. It is a beautiful area. Have a great day, Steve
Great Job maintaining that average speed !
Thanks Bill! It was a great day for a fast ride. Take care, Steve
Great average Steve. Nice country. Where are what looks like flat roads
Hi there and thanks for the comment! I live in a beautiful area and by comparison the road I was on is relatively flat compared to the many hills we have in Northwest Connecticut. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
❤
Nice Vlog :)
Thank you 😊
Strong pop
Need for speed is a yes. Rural Vermont isn't the area for a road bike. Nice bike. Thanks for the video and take care, Al
Hi Al and thanks again. Love my old road bike. Hope all is well. Thanks again, Steve
Sjeez 70 years old and still the 20mph plus, incredible
Hi there and thanks for watching! It was a fun ride. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
I swore I'd never own another van after our 5 kids grew up, but that would make an awesome bike hauler.
Need for speed: I like that! 👍
Thanks Thomas. I hope all is well with you. Take care and have a great day, Steve
Hey Maurice and great to hear from you! I can't get near those speeds on my mountain bike either. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
I'm 75 ish and being I don't have the need for speed I ride a mountain bike aka MTB :-) I enjoy nature rides, exploring and making youtube videos of my rides.
That is awesome! Thanks for your comment. Take care, Steve
10:08 Beware! Steve, there's a 'hoodie' coming up from behind you!
Yeah and he probably thought I was nuts talking to a camera. He probably said "crazy old man talking to himself in the woods, better keep away"
I’m 77 and lead club fitness rides 22 - 35 miles with 3 80 year olds and a lot of retired folks 3-4 days a week usually.
Hi there and thanks for your comment! Sounds like you have a great group of riders! Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
What model of infinity saddle did you get?
Hi Vick, All three of my Infinity bike seats are the E3 models. Wouldn't ride anything else. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
Sadly my overall ride "average" is 10mph and that's all my knees want to do. lol Nice area to ride Steve.
Hi Tony, I hope you're having a great day! Wish I was in Texas today. Its getting cold up here in CT. Take care, Steve
Have you ever ridden with Dave (aka Old Man On A Bike), I believe he is in CT also and rides a Priority.
Hi Larry, Dave and I have not been able to connect yet. Maybe next summer. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
Hello Steve , how long do you ride ? it seems so easy for you . Whouaou !!! I hope to do as well as you Steve . 👋🏻 from France
Hi Nico and thanks for watching. This ride was a short 10 Miles (16 Km). It was a nice easy ride. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
As my dad would say, "watch out for those wet leaves, they can be slippery!" 🍃 🍂 🍁
Hi Kathryn and thanks for watching! Your dad's words are so true. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Inspiration for me at 62 years old.
Thank you!
Hi there and thanks for sharing your thoughts. You have a lot of wisdom from your riding career. Thanks again and stay safe. Steve
do u sweat whie cycling those distances?? im 50 ive noticed i no longer sweat like when i was 30
Hi there and thanks for the question. I do sweat while cycling. However not nearly as much as when I was 30. Part of the ageing process. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Um, I need that helmet mirror you have despite it costing half mph of aero. You know the brand?
Hi Steve, the mirror is on Amazon for under $20 USD. Its called "Take A Look". Have a great day, Steve
@stevemurray710 It can detect cyclists, which actually is annoying most of the time if you ride with others, but I'm not sure if it reliably does.
