@@singwithAshley There are only 6 singers in this musical! All of the people you've reviewed before this are completely carrying the ensemble for all of the other characters' songs. I think the fact that he sings perfectly in those confirms this theory! I love this musical so much.
@@singwithAshley it's not a theory actually, Ocean states that she got Ricky into the choir even though he couldn't talk because "Accesibtly for all" then Ricky goes "Then I died" as this was after What the World Needs where she offended the entire choir.

@@singwithAshley it's a character choice, it's been a while since I've seen the whole show, but I'm pretty sure he does that when he talks. He doesn't talk much but when he does it's excitedly about his passions so the breathing is part of his "nerdy, awkard" character
It makes sense honestly- the entire choir does all the exercises and everything, but he’s never done it, he’s watched them all get trained but never done any of it himself since he was mute

i definitely think the breathing is a character choice! not just because ricky used to be mute, like somebody else mentioned, but because it sort of just suits his whole demeanour imo. he's sort of charmingly nerdy and strange, and the way he breathes when he sings just Makes Sense with the way he talks, for me. he has a few little monologues where he'll just rattle off some sci-fi jargon in this sort of excited tone of voice, and the way he breathes during those monologues and during this song, in my opinion, helps to sell how excited he is to finally be able to express himself verbally, after a whole lifetime of being ignored by everybody around him. so yeah, i think it's definitely a character choice! not every ricky actor performs this song this way, but a few do, and i think it adds something :]

Funfact with Ricky's quick change Jane Doe also changes.Thats why shes absent after his change. Space Age Batchelor Man takes place right before the Ballad of Jane doe. When she is floating upside down they had to find a way to keep her skirt from flipping upside down too. She changes into a skirt with wires in it to keep it from falling after she disappares in this song.
I love how Ricky says "Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into?" while we're also thinking the same thing lmao. I say this with love, RTC is my favorite musical.
After “what would you do in my place” he starts hyperventilating dramatically, and in certain parts the gasping doesn’t happen when it seems like it should. I’m 90% sure it’s a character choice

I absolutely believe he does the heavy breathing on purpose for character choice, Ricky is just very excited he gets to share his stories and fantasies for once in his life and he wants to get everything out as fast as possible!! Love this song!

10:14 he is actually meant to sound similar to bowie!!! it’s way more obvious in the 2011 version but i’m guessing they decided to tone it down over time for some reason but i really love it

i think a significant amount of the weirdness comes from its placement between talia and ballad of jane doe and the fact that you haven't listened to any version of the first song or What The World Needs means you haven't had any of the context for this to be extremely weird *within*,
the weirdness comes from the context and the tonal whiplash, and minimally from the sexy cat lady religion
If you want to see a song where they all sing together, Fall Fair Suite is one!

Part of what I love of this show- is that they all dance how teenagers who think they are being very cool do. Its such a fun song and as a fan of Cats, absurd sci-fi, and rock its great for me. I do prefer hearing the cast album of this song- without being rushed and with some alterations its a bit stronger as a song- tho I get why its diff for character on stage. Also, Jane’s song is after thing- so you notice she disappears by the end to get set up
He breathes like that throughout the whole musical, i’m pretty sure it’s purposeful. i’ve seen videos of Alex Wyse (the actor) singing in different contexts and he doesn’t breathe like that usually
This and sugar cloud are definitely my favorite songs in this musical lol, I don’t care if people think they’re weird 😤😤❤❤❤

I just realized that Ricky's line "For love is the closest you can come to another person because that's the closest you can come to be another person," is actually a line from the play "Legoland"! "Legoland" was made by the creator of "Ride the Cyclone," and is actually about Penny Lamb (or who Jane Doe ends up being) and her younger brother, Ezra. "Legoland" is a whole other thing and absolutely crazy, and it was made quite a while before "Ride the Cyclone," so there's often little easter eggs in "Ride the Cyclone"!!!

@@singwithAshley i have the curse of loving singer and being a picky eater at the same time. i despise both tea and honey. i must give myself strength and force myself to have it in desperate times like this though. luckily my throat isn't as bad as it normally gets when i have a sore throat though!

My personal theory is that he’s not as experienced in singing/performing as the other choir members because he’s literally never sung let along talked in his life! (or at least the life he lived 🥲) idk if I’m just excusing (NOT SAYING HES INEXPERIENCED!!!! HE SOUNDS GREAT AND I LISTEN TO THIS SONG RITUALLY.) but it’s just my theory. And the breathing was probably intended because he’s just excited to finally have his turn and be able to hear what he sounds like since he probably forgot due to losing his speaking at a young age. (Sorry for the long rant just wanted to put my say 😋)

Something I've always wondered is why we lose Jane Doe after a certain point in the song. Like she's not there physically
Pretty sure she disappeared because her song was up next and she had to get the harness set up for her number
she had to get into a specially wired skirt so it wouldn't flip upside down and put on a harness to fly around

Seriouslyyyy this was so entertaining and i'm glad you had fun with this performance! One thing I love about vocal coaches like you, it's that you're not just trying to point out the stuff that you don't like, you don't even say it like it's anything insulting at all. Your top priority is what is and isn't healthy for the voice and you point out all of the things that you do like and that the singer does well as much as the stuff that you'd think weren't healthy for the performer (which comes out as more of a concern than a diss more than anything).
