wow! despite being a big fan of musicals, i don't actually know much about singing or the technical aspects of it. but watching you analyse and talk about the songs in such detail is still really interesting and i feel like i'm learning a lot. i'm gonna binge the rest of your starkid reactions and can't wait to see you react to the next song, it's one of my all time favourites not just from starkid, but musicals in general!

Corey's vocals are better in the cast recording.

Oh boy, I have a thought. Earlier, he says that Ukrainian men have to emotion; rage and passion. And when I rage, I sing in whatever really techno auto tune rap thing. The reason it gets so techno at the end is probably because he got mad by the fact that he never could really meet her, they met online and he was saving to move to Ukraine. I feel so bad for Mischa, he is awesome.

on the topic of lauren sounding auto-tuney! I do believe they claimed to mix live vocals with soundtrack for the youtube recording so some parts will be the recorded soundtrack but i think thats very rarely for actual main vocals and mostly for background music/vocals

How much do/should character voices play into singing performances? Does it add another layer of challenge and should the performers be willing compromise certain techniques and pitch accuracy in favor of them? (in your opinion of course)

I don't know if many people will agree to this, but I think you would benefit watching the digital ticket version of Hachet Town and then continue watching this full version. Hachet Town sounded fully pre recorded in the full show posted by starkid and I feel like there really is no benefit of dissecting it when it's not really live. I might be wrong, but it sure sounded prerecorded. The reason you should still watch the full show version is there are easter eggs specifically for the youtube posted show. But I think you should watch that one for fun and have context for it after watching the performance people actually saw live becaue there are big differences. I'll post the link in the replies. Edit: It's the song after the next one.

That whole part with Curt and Corey seemed to be one they had troubles with in the digital ticket, too. Not only was it not vocally there, but Curt messed up the timing of the lyrics completely. I think it's just a difficult, like, portion of the song, if that makes sense? Also, this wasn't the intro to act II. The next song is the conclusion of act I (though you probably already know that, lol). Next two songs coming up are easily my top two faves! Can't wait!

i was in the stream but there were a couple things that i forgot to say! as has been mentioned in these comments, the next song closes act one and it truly goes out with a bang. i mentioned in an earlier npmd comment section about how much jon kills in this show, but the next song really displays it. i won't spoil, but one moment in the next song almost always makes me (and everyone else, really) feel really emotional. his voice is so so good and he has one of the most poignant moments in the entire show, which he completely delivers on. jon is just so so good as ritchie and some of the physical choreography is amazing too! now about this song! i love go go nighthawks, it's just such a fun little song and i think higher up on my ranking of npmd songs than most people. it's such a happy song for hatchetfield, so feeling a sense of incoming dread is super valid haha. the "N! IG! HT! AH AH! KSSS" part is so unbelievably fun to listen to (and learn the choreography, speaking from personal experience) the harmony on "and now i don't eat all by myself" and "and now i can pee all by myself" always gives me goosebumps, jeff blim was just so in his bag writing the music for this show. but in the words of corey dorris' bill woodward himself, "i hope you've got a warranty on that fan, because sooner or later the shit's gonna hit it". sorry for the long dump of a comment, but i'm so excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the show, act 2 has three of my favorite hatchetfield songs back to back to back!

I also don't like the part of this song with Corey and Curt just because I think (as somebody that knows nothing about music/singing) that they don't match well when singing together. Curt can hit the notes required here, but they're too high for Corey. Then they both have to try and match the other for the harmony but it doesn't really work out. Both have nice voices, just either not fit for this song or for working together, or something else I'm missing because as I said, I go by feel rather than knowledge lol.

ppl already mentioned trail to oregon and sk innit but i also love corey's song in how the grunch cribbed christmas 😄 i'd love to see your take on that show in general too! for reference, it's a tcb show and a sequel to solve-it squad, which is a scooby doo parody. they're both one act shows, but solve-it squad is a play (probably better for a stream at some point?) and htgcc is a musical ^^

Corey blew me away with his vocals at the concert Starkid did in London in May this year, I don’t know what tea he was drinking while he was over here but it was WORKING 😂 (look up some footage of the ‘forgotten songs medley’ from Starkid Innit, and you’ll see what I mean. Especially from the evening performance but also I’m biased because that’s the one I saw! He also did a very fun cover of Show Stoppin’ Number from TGWDLM) Actually I would be very interested in your thoughts on Starkid Innit in general, it being entirely live with no post production and all, and being a different setting in terms of being a concert rather than a musical edit: It’s not great quality, but I actually just uploaded my phone footage of Corey’s part of the medley

Ooh that's interesting that you said the cheer sounded almost like a ritual, because I've seen a theory that the light turning green when they all start hating on Clivesdale symbolizes Wiggly. A ritualistic vibe seems fitting if there is a Lord in Black somehow connected to this song.

I also think StarKid has always underutilized their singers with lower registers (like Corey and the incredible Jim Povolo), so I don’t know how much it influences Corey’s singing that he doesn’t get to sing down there a lot? It has actually always bothered me that they don’t get a lot of solos even though songs like Pays to Be an Animal from The Trail to Oregon show that when you give Corey a song that he can shine in he really really shines! So I’ll just have to wait for you to get to all of those instances so I can hear what you think xD

I'm really interested to see if you can catch which Starkid Member is playing the announcer saying "And now welcome on to the field tonight's opponents: The Clivesday Chemists". It was a fun surprise realizing it was that person😁

Ashley's stubborn refusal to give up on seeing some good in Max Jagerman is adorable. Nah, he's a "literal monster."

I do wonder what happened with Corey's part in this. The man can sing and does have some lovely high notes; "Sometimes it Pays to be an Animal" from Trail to Oregon is testament to that. Maybe we found the octave hard to maintain or something. I don't know.

@Ashley Kennedy I get the feeling that Corey's lower register option was more a character choice than a vocal choice. As you watch more Starkid and start seeing more of Corey, you'll realize that he, more often than not, will choose to degrade his vocals to maintain his character's voice when he has to choose one or the other. I don't particularly agree with that choice, but it's his to make. It could also be that, this being live, he was just struggling with the vocals on that particular day.

I also thought not the character but the actor for max was under there and they were just using the mask as a way to hide his face since he is dead. also i dont think its hating. corey's vocal tone just wasnt the right fit for this bright peppy song. he has some nice vocals in trail to oregon imo. can't wait for more reactions. the next song is particularly good and there are a couple more stand outs ahead (hatchet song and bbq song). :D

A new video! YAY! Personally, my favorite Corey song is "Axe Man" from NT. Corey and Bryce sound perfect together in that song.

When my girlfriend and I saw this live we both agreed that it was really cool to see Bryce playing a cheerleader without having to shave her armpits. Little victories against arbitrary patriarchal beauty standards are awesome.

The next one is definitely one of if not my favourite and I think it really shows Jon’s growth since TGWDLM and I think your going to love it

It is a bit confusing because of the way the pro shot is edited, but this is still Act 1, as well as the next number, which is why the next one is so exciting!

Corey is a good singer - he opted his whole part here an octave down on some _really_ intricate lyrics "saturated towel"? From personal experience I could see having trouble articulating a wordy joke bellowing it all in the face mask. It's the same situation for men that sopranos have when they're in the stratosphere "You can have this note or you can have the diction' cuz _everything up here_ is mostly going to be "ah."" It's the tall vowels thing - when your space is that open it's hard to say words! This whole song is face-sanging; thank you Jeff Blim, may we have another? (Jon was valiant on those top two notes that are _not_ built into his voice yet.) If you want to hear some _primo_ face-belting check out John LaChusa's WILD PARTY with Toni Colette and Eartha Kitt and like 20 other people who will melt your face off.

Yeah this song wasn’t great for Corey, but I’ve heard his voice shine before in Nightmare Time. I also personally like his parts of VHS Christmas, he has a line in that show that made me straight up cry (in the best way)
