Let's be honest, Jon absolutely kills it all things considered. TGWDLM is basically just Jeff Blim going "Okay so you're going to go almost two hours solely speaking onstage with virtually no vocal warmup time and then do the big finale number which also calls back to songs I wrote specifically for my infamously wacky range, you got this buddy"
One theory I've read is that the reason Emma starts screaming during the reprise of Show Stopping Number is because it is the one song Paul wasn't there to hear, proving he can't be faking being infected
Good theory. I see it as Emma notices there is an audience watching and the fourth wall comes down finally. It’s like mind breaking to her. You’ll notice she faces/sees the audience when she screams and the lights become brighter to reveal the audience 😊
If you pay attention, Emma doesn’t really start freaking out during Inevitable until a certain point. She’s still trying to convince herself that Paul is acting like the others as some kind of camouflage until then. The point in question? When he starts singing lines from Showstopping Number, the one song he wasn’t there for. She thought of the implications!
A lot of the reason Inevitable is my favourite song in TGWDLM is just how much Lauren commits to it. Her screams, the end scene, and even earlier on in the song when everyone else is center stage you can see her off to the side asking the audience for help. I also think that like you in the beginning Emma was hoping that Paul might have been faking it and then when he sang lines from 'Show-Stopping Number' - which he wasn't around for - she lost hope. She does such a heart-breaking scream when he starts singing those lines and proves he's part of the Hive.
inevitable will always have a special place in my heart, i think - it really embodies the whole "not very scary until you think of the implications" thing. on the surface, it's just an upbeat finishing number, the protagonist singing to his love interest about them being destined to be together; when you Think About The Implications (PROMISE ME YOU'LL THINK ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS!!!), it's such a chilling ending, the musical hivemind essentially taunting emma with the inevitability of its victory over her and using paul's body and voice to do so, because if they could get Musical Hater Paul Matthews to conform then emma has no chance of escaping them. it's so cool! as a big ol horror nerd who loves stories where the heroes lose (even when i love them to bits, like paul and emma), i'm Obsessed. emma screaming for help at the curtain call was such a fantastic decision. it's also just generally such a fun song to sing, and my go-to whenever i'm asked to bring a song i love to perform (which, coincidentally, is happening tomorrow!). i have to imagine jon's having fun singing and dancing so happily after a whole show of having to pretend to hate musicals lmao, and (as u said) it's nice to hear his voice more relaxed after let it out :] i look forward to seeing ur take on npmd (though no rush, obviously!)
remember paul and emmas conversation in the professors bunker? emma said she always wanted to escape dying in hatchetfield while paul said he never wanted to leave. and guess what? they got what they wanted! paul died to the explosion in hatchetfield and emma died in clivesdale! isn’t that fun 😅
I wonder if apotheosis!Ted has changed his mind about the possibility of people getting kicked in the head after seeing Paul high-stepping toward Emma.
I think Lauren said that in one of the runs of TGWDLM someone actually tossed their phone to her at the end and they took it backstage and took a photo before giving it back.
I would literally have done that, one eye crying of joy, one happy for the song and my soul hurting thinking might have broken my phone when tossing it hahahah
It really was inevitable-I mean, you didn’t even question that there was going to be a closing number. Of course there was. The story was always going to end in song.
I remember this was the realization that hit me when I was watching it for the first time - Paul and Emma were sitting in the bunker/bar, bonding, and I thought "oh shit...either this will have a Pippin-esque lack of showmanship at the end of the show, or the heroes are going to lose in order for a closing number to happen".
my favourite theory, is that they were all already infected the whole time, and that the show itself is just being put on by the hivemind for its own entertainment. Mostly cause it's the only way to really make sense of the title number- especially with Emma being in it
@@kirabrabazon219 what an interesting theory! I think I still enjoyed the theory of watching them become under control of the high find though! Super excited for nerdy fruits must die! Sing you soon!

However when and if that ends, the only other Starkid musical I'm DESPERATE for you to checkout is Twisted (not that the rest of the musicals aren't great, this is just my favorite by far). Dylan Saunders has much better moments in that than Black Friday, the humor is incredible, and the songs are absolutely heartbreaking. THANK YOU FOR THIS SERIES AND FOR EVERYTHING ELSE
the way the joy died in your eyes at the start of the song made my day lol. the way the plot unfolds and the red flags get flown everywhere, it makes sense that this would be the ending, but it still hurts. the first time i watched it i really didn't know how to feel because i was hoping so hard for a happy ending. upon rewatch it did dawn on me that the plot really was just gearing to this. sure is jarring to hear emma scream in terror while the others are happily singing though.
Okay some final fun facts or little things to notice because this is my favorite song and I had so much fun singing along with you! One, just a fun bit of stagecraft but the backing lights cycle for which song is part of the medley! (Incidental fun fact, the Langs only found out that the lights could be multiple colors when Sarah their lighting designer told them for Show Stopping Number. They thought it actually worked out really well with how jarring it is). Two, Jon’s been very open that he rotated between Paul being possessed and Paul pretending to be possessed dependent on the show and he will NOT share which it was for this. Nick says he thinks Paul is possessed and it’s the end of the world. Three, the puke line in this and Join Us and Die is actually a holdover from earlier drafts where it was more explicit method of infection but it didn’t really work on stage. The blue light in MacNamara’s hand was a compromise because they couldn’t light his mouth. Four, Schaffer’s white collar is actually because Jamie Lyn is wearing Nora’s costume underneath for quick change. If you watch old choreo tests she’s actually supposed to get her throat ripped out by the nurse (I think?) but it took too much time. And finally, Workin Boys was never meant to be a real thing, it was just a joke about several garbage musicals/shows the Langs had seen (Workin’ and My Boys I think are mentioned in the commentary) but it became such a popular joke we got the short about it, which will be very fun to do a watch-a-long for. Thanks for experiencing my favorite musical! I had a blast. Edit: Oh I forgot one! Kickline line is also a joke about Starkid squeezing a kickline into almost every musical before this one. There’s literally compilations. Once you notice it you can’t stop.

I was gonna say about emma being horrified when realizing Paul knows show stopping number but hey its been said a couple times so i am gonna say in my opinion one of the coolest parts of this ending is that the audience is part of the infected, we know emma is not infected, she is screaming yet we are just "clapping", like on the side of the infected and we know when they take emma is most likely to brutally murder her backstage to turn her into her musical form, is very incredible. Another theory is that emma is already turning, i guess from just exposure to so many infected that she realizes she is on a stage (is this f**ing loop?!). Not sure about that but cool. Oh and i think the reason they are still here, they say that they are "reconstructed" from the inside out, so not just destroying the meteor failed, they just "rebuilt" themselves, pretended to be normal for a bit (note the nurse who is infected only nods not speaking a word, i guess just to prevent to burst into song) and when they got emma mess with her and then spread to well everywhere. Last point, the hive mind is messed up. The lyrics are on point, it knows what its doing, (messing with Bill, Charlotte...) it says on the first lyrics on each song what the not onfected would like to hear thinking they are still there and then twist it . Maybe thats why Paul is like hey emma what if i chose this life? Because the hive knows thats what at this point would be worse for Emma to hear. Ok enough rambling around sorry if something didnt make sense I'm no native but oh this song is just so good!! I really really love this one. Fun reaction, thanks 😁 I also had a giggly, giddy moment when I realized that the finale was an epic combo of all the previous songs LMAO. This is one of my favorite 'fringe' theatre shows. The concept is so fun and clever... and Jon was perfect, I thought. What a meme that man is (compliment!), and Lauren was ace too. Another fun fact: Jon refers to Lauren as ''Emma'' by accident multiple times in his watch party live streams, before correcting himself (where he reacted to TGWDLM and Black Friday). Sign she did great! 😂
its been so fab seeing you react to this musical, its nice seeing someone get into this show and universe and also getting info on the singing technicalities of the people in the show since how voices are used and the actors own vocal history was so well picked for the themes of tgwdlm and then getting to see everyone grow and change over the rest of the musicals has been amazing. Very excited for Nerdy Prudes, its got some amazing songs and along with nightmare time brings a lot of context to whats happening in the other shows
Going from tgwdlm to npmd is REALLY going to show you how much jon improved because (and i dont think this is a spoiler) he opens the show and nailed it (imo)
Starkid is just so good. Every show they do is a straight banger. I know you've got a few more in the hopper, and I'm sure it's been suggested before, but if you could react to Epic The Musical, us Winions would be over the moon. So please consider putting it in the roster!!
Cant wait for more reactions Ashely! I feel like the apotheosis will be upon us any day now, and we will be here to watch your reactions (Its inevitable!).
Funny you ask here about any musicals that don't end on ensemble numbers, because the very next one you're gonna do is an example of that. Nerdy Prudes Must Die ends on a solo 😅
1:25 Musicals that don't end with the whole ensemble? (Excluding bows, of course!) I only have 2 Musicals at the top of my mind: - Die Päpstin (german for: The female Pope) ends with only two people on stage. - Three Musketeers ends with 4 people on stage I've been racking my mind over this question for far too long! I gotta watch the video now xD
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The finale is such a fun number. Really shows that you don't need to be a Broadway level singer to put on a really good, fun and interesting show! And yes, there ARE multiple timelines. Here's a bit of lore: there was an event in 2005 that split the timeline, so before that there was only one. Now there are multiple. Won't spoil the how or why, just good to know to wrap your head around some stuff. Every show and NMT episode is its own timeline. Except season 2 of NMT, that entire season is one timeline. (And the Lang brothers' best writing - it is SO well written and intriguing)
I’M SO EXCITED TO SEE YOUR VIDEOS WHENEVER YOU POST !!! (Quick question: I plan on using one of these songs for an audition at my school! We don’t know what musical it is until school starts, but I wanna have a song prepared. Would you suggest any songs from TGWDLM for a mezzo?)
@@billyboy993 hmmm you need a nice “middle” song. So cup of roasted coffee would probably be good, or La Dee da da day. Because too much story line in a song could eliminate you from a show that doesn’t match that vibe. Break a leg and let me know how your auditions go!!
@@singwithAshley AH thank you for responding !!!!! I was already planning on doing cup of roasted coffee, because the choreo is a plus, and I have to audition in front of the dance teacher at the same time- I’ll definitely let you know in a few weeks how it went!!
While much of the full company is usually onstage at the end, the actual number that closes the show in Sondheim's Company is basically just a solo. Same with Jesus Christ Superstar actually, for the very end AFTER the big Jesus Christ Superstar song. Those are two off the top of my head...there's probably more lol.

There is a theory that Paul was faking, but I don't personally subscribe to that theory. Nick (one of the writers) and Jon have both confirmed that Paul did unfortunately die, most likely when he set off that grenade. I will say this, I know there's a question of whether or not to do nmt2 before Nerdy Prudes, and I do think you should. HOWEVER, if you don't want to do the entire nmt2 series before NPMD, I'd recommend at least watching Abstinence Camp before Nerdy Prudes. You can go back and watch the rest later if you like.
Also ~ I think Jon took Let It Out too seriously tbh (from the way he talked about it in his livestream!). Jekyll and Hyde is a good example of this. It ends with a spotlight over the dying Jekyll and Emma. I was in this show and on the catwalk over the stage along with my scene partner.
@@shesalilsapphicokay agree! I can not wait to be a nerd and Jon’s growth is something I’m getting super excited for!!
its been so fab seeing you react to this musical, its nice seeing someone get into this show and universe and also getting info on the singing technicalities of the people in the show since how voices are used and the actors own vocal history was so well picked for the themes of tgwdlm and then getting to see everyone grow and change over the rest of the musicals has been amazing. Very excited for Nerdy Prudes, its got some amazing songs and along with nightmare time brings a lot of context to whats happening in the other shows
@@unicornclutter I can not wait!!! Thanks for singing with me friend!
Can't wait to see your NPMD reactions! It has my favorite songs and story of the trilogy.
Going from tgwdlm to npmd is REALLY going to show you how much jon improved because (and i dont think this is a spoiler) he opens the show and nailed it (imo)

The title says it Didn't, not doesn't 😮
My favorite ending to any Starkid show and my favorite Starkid song!
Starkid is just so good. Every show they do is a straight banger. I know you've got a few more in the hopper, and I'm sure it's been suggested before, but if you could react to Epic The Musical, us Winions would be over the moon. So please consider putting it in the roster!!
@@karutasilver it definitely is on the roster friend!

Funny you ask here about any musicals that don't end on ensemble numbers, because the very next one you're gonna do is an example of that. Nerdy Prudes Must Die ends on a solo 😅
I loved all of your reaction to TGWDLM, and i can't wait for you to react to NPMD, so excited❤
@@nahiaraalarcon1845 ahhhh woo hoo! Thanks for coming on this journey with me! I’m so stoked to be a nerd 🤓
1:25 Musicals that don't end with the whole ensemble? (Excluding bows, of course!)
I only have 2 Musicals at the top of my mind:
- Die Päpstin (german for: The female Pope) ends with only two people on stage.
- Three Musketeers ends with 4 people on stage
I've been racking my mind over this question for far too long! I gotta watch the video now xD
Gypsy as well!
@@ladabeg hahaha enjoy the video! Your brain’s 🧠 hard work is so appreciated!!! Haha
For a moment, I was thinking Dear Evan Hanson as well, but I think they still do....
@@TiaMat99 can’t wait for season 2 of NMT!
as much as i love the music of the other musicals, especially nerdy prudes must die, this one has a special place to me for sure

I think La Dee da da day is probably my fav pick for your audition. Feel free to record and tag me in your video and I can give feedback!
@@singwithAshley AH thank you for responding !!!!! I was already planning on doing cup of roasted coffee, because the choreo is a plus, and I have to audition in front of the dance teacher at the same time- I’ll definitely let you know in a few weeks how it went!!
@@billyboy993 of course!! I will always try to respond! Hope I was helpful! Cant wait to hear how it went!
About the beginning - the only musical i can think of that doesnt end with an ensemble is falsettos, i think!
After npmd, i want to see twisted or starship because i want to hear more about what Dylan Saunders is doing vocally when he sings his heart out.
@@katiereed5038 Dylan! Dylan Dylan Dylan!
I'm so happy to have watched along with you, can't wait for your thoughts on Nerdy Prudes!!
Awe thanks for singing with me! Let’s go!
While much of the full company is usually onstage at the end, the actual number that closes the show in Sondheim's Company is basically just a solo. Same with Jesus Christ Superstar actually, for the very end AFTER the big Jesus Christ Superstar song. Those are two off the top of my head...there's probably more lol.
so much fun watching this with you!
@@lynchie2073 oh good! Thank you much for singing with me! Fun is inevitable…
I think this song is what made me love this musical and being my favorite starkid show for a long time. A lot of people love let it out as their favorite paul song but this one is my favorite. I still listen to it to this day.
If you interested you can listen to the soundtrack version of inevitable. Jon’s voice is more clear and i think the soundtrack is actually better.
As i said before im so anxious for you to see nerdy prudes must die!! The story and the songs its the evolution of the hatchetfield stories. From TGWDLM to Nightmate Time to NPMD.
@@Lalaisinhaa hi! I hope you enjoyed my reaction to your favorite song! It was surely a fun one and I had so much fun reacting to it and the entire series! Now to buckle up for nerdy prudes must die! So excited, sing with you soon!

does realising there's a NMT2 change plans at all? are you squeezing that in before NPMD, or having it wait till after/during? iirc we first saw some NPMD characters in NMT2.
@@pd-ctr do you think I should hold off watching NMT2 until after NPMD? Or rush to watch it before I start filming?
@@singwithAshley personally, watching nmt2 made some things more exciting watching npmd and i guess provided context to a few jokes? but if it's difficult to squeeze nmt2 in, or you'd rather jump to another musical already, that's totally fine! it still stands on its own, like how tgwdlm is not necessary to watch black friday, just adds something to the experience. :)
@@radxianixe thanks for this! This is helpful!
@@singwithAshley when it comes to NMT2 the only one that I find really affects NPMD is the first one of nmt2 which does introduce some characters but other than that I’d say go for it I skipped nightmare time before I watched npmd
@@disguisedhamstergames8299 I would prefere if you did Twisted or Starship in the meantime.
Just to say, it wasn’t me who said this but this is true : Nobody questions why the title is The guy who DIDN’T like musicals and not The guy who DOESN’T like musical
@@abelielle9438 mmmm facts I didn’t catch!

@@lizziebrooks7128 nerdy prudes start NEXT WEEK! Stay tuned! So so glad you’re here! Sing soon!
music man doesnt end in an ensemble number!! lol
Looking forward to the Nerdy Prudes Must Die reaction, the training he's had between now and then is clear plus I think he's chilled out more LMAO. 😊 Btw I don't know if anyone has told you (Ashley) but I'd recommend watching NPMD before Workin' Boys. Workin' Boys does stand alone but there are characters and references you won't catch if you don't watch NPMD first. ❤

How do you finish a musical if not with a musical number? How does a musical number have to end this story? I guess it was Inevitable.
