As much as I love Scott Redmond, I just love how Alex Wyse portrayed Ricky. He’s just so awkward yet confident at the same time. So loud and proud, but he has little moments where he gets shy. Like that little “it gets weird now” but then he jump out from behind the curtains in his jumpsuit. At the beginning, he’s so quiet explaining his fantasy, and then he gets really loud and into it. This Ricky was just so out there, and this version of this song portrays that, too. It’s so upbeat and fun at the beginning and it stays like that. He expresses so much emotion. I just hate what they did to this song, they made him less chaotic and I love how together the choreography was. It was so neat and very in-theme yet super fun. I just LOVE the energy. Of course they made some important changes, but I feel like they got scared of Ricky embracing his awkwardness. They just got scared of Ricky tbh, like they were too scared to make him fun without being ableist(which is why it’s so important to have disabled people write/portray disabled characters) It sucks how they actually did have a disabled actor but mistreated them. I liked that version of Ricky, too. I feel like he was a lot more sassy, but I do miss the awkwardness. This Ricky is just the best. From my understanding, he was ignored but he could communicate enough with everyone else to remain in the same high school and advance with his peers. The only indication we get after he concedes is that he does so to: “not be a dick.” But he seemed to acknowledge the fragility of his own life immediately after he died. This explains his reasoning for me: “Unlike anyone else in the chorus, he was prepared to die because of his illness and as such he made peace with death before any other member of the chorus did.” I am not saying that Ricky doesn't have any internalized ableism (he never says anything about Ocean ableist remarks so we are unaware of his feelings on the matter) but it might have not been such a decisive factor in his decision.
I like to think it’s because Ricky despite being disabled had a fulfilling and happy life and he can tell the other members didn’t, so, he’s being gracious “(or as Ricky says “not being a dick”) and giving everyone else a better chance at having fulfilling lives

I like to think that Ricky didn’t want to go back, either because of internalized ableism or because of the hatred he experienced in life, and he was never listened to, so I feel like he saw this as a chance to express his thoughts :)
I like to think that inspite of being disabled he had a happy and fufilled life and that’s why he didn’t wanna go back, not because others made him miserable or because he thought less of himself, but because his disability didn’t stop him from leading a happy life, I mean the man still was in the choir and rode rollercoasters so, but I agree on the end, he can finally express himself, but he was happy, because I’m honestly really sick of people writing disabled characters to be miserable and hate themselves, because not every disabled person feels that way

@@winterwithawhyknudsen5166 Eh, the character writing leaves a lot up for interpretation. From my understanding, he was ignored but he could communicate enough with everyone else to remain in the same high school and advance with his peers.
The only indication we get after he concedes is that he does so to: “not be a dick.”
But he seemed to acknowledge the fragility of his own life immediately after he died.
This explains his reasoning for me:
“Unlike anyone else in the chorus, he was prepared to die because of his illness and as such he made peace with death before any other member of the chorus did.”
I am not saying that Ricky doesn't have any internalized ableism (he never says anything about Ocean ableist remarks so we are unaware of his feelings on the matter) but it might have not been such a decisive factor in his decision.
I like to think it’s because Ricky despite being disabled had a fulfilling and happy life and he can tell the other members didn’t, so, he’s being gracious “(or as Ricky says “not being a dick”) and giving everyone else a better chance at having fulfilling lives

I went to see the show in DC, and Ricky's story changed significantly. In the new version, he doesn't suffer from a degenerative disease. Rather, his father was a televangelist who traveled with a snake, and Ricky was traumatized after watching his father die from a snake bite
