I found out the other day collecting them all in the first level, which isn't too difficult. The other levels are a beast to collect all the rings, and I haven't bothered with them since there is only one bonus stage.

I love all the different branching paths that made coming up with the optimal route to collect all the rings such an incredibly tricky pathfinding challenge!
Most likely because this game was programmed in C instead of Assembly, which results in an easier development process but creates less optimized code. Most if not all games from the PS1, N64, GBA, and later were programmed in C or C++

I've beaten the game legit and even got all the rings in all the levels except Showdown when I was a kid. That level is so nerve-wracking I couldn't do it back then. I should go back and give it a try.

the machine isn't super unfair since you can only die to the two death pits in the main area, and all the emeralds are outside of that area so if you're in control you can avoid those in comparison showdown is death everywhere, i was bored at college one day and made it to showdown deathless only to lose everything in the span of 15 minutes

The Genesis was easily up to a good pinball game (see Psycho Pinball), this game was rushed out in two months so there was a Sonic game for Christmas 1993 as Sonic 3 was taking longer than expected, so its quality isn't as good as it could have been.
Not that it affects the speed run but in the machine if you bust open every cage in the animal prison as the game calls it including the 1 with the emerald shown at 7:30 you get an extra 500,000 points!

As a child I was the best person I knew at this game. I could beat it without dying. My friends and siblings stopped playing multiplayer with me because I was so much better than them. But this was on another level. A flawless execution. It was nice to watch a true master at play. Thank you for letting us watch.

I used to play this with my dad as a kid, and we made it to the finsl level only once. I finished this game on an emulator I downloaded for my tablet about 21 years later! That in and of itself took place a couple of years ago, when it was easier to get emulated games on a tablet. Game took me hours to beat! It's definitely not an easy game.
I legitimately hated this game more than Sonic '06 or Rise of Lyric, but it still had a great soundtrack, many cute sprites, and many, uh... interesting sprites. 😅
Nope. This game just used the awful GEMS sound driver that make games sound bad like that due to the lack of utilization of the soundchip. The Mega Drive's YM2612 is WAY more advanced than the Soundblaster's YM3812

I only managed to collect all rings in a stage once. I was just playing Toxic Caves casually, suddenly got the message that I had collected all the rings, then entered the special bonus. Beating the game was already hard, but collecting every ring in a stage is a huuuuuuge task.
1 day I just decided to get all the rings in toxic caves & discovered multiball by accident, I eventually managed to get them in all the levels, but I never managed to do the stages that fast or that well, on a side note I usually can't help to do the prison through in stage 3, makes me feel better freeing all the animals there
I remember spending money to reserve a copy when it officially got released. On the day it got released, I changed my mind and got a refund, but still procured the Sonic Boom Music CD that you could get only if you reserved a copy. I’m glad I never purchased it, because I never would’ve gotten past level 1. 😅
Sonic Spinball is the best Sonic game in my opinion I don't much like the speedrunning nature of Sonic, I like Spinball because it lets you take as much time as you need

100% requires collecting all rings, beating every multiball stage and beating every bonus level The Any% uses skips and intentionally false all the bonus levels for speed
Normally in this game, it’s mostly relied on luck if you get to the boss and win or not, however with TAS, you basically just make it the easiest hardest game I’ve ever seen.

Yeah it was pretty tough. I made it to the Machine twice...but on the Game Gear version I did beat it a couple of times.

I forgot how some of the designs in this game are really freaky and nightmarish. Can easily squeeze them into some Sonic.exe thing.
I'd love to see a remake/sequel to this. The concept was really cool, but the Genesis really wasn't up for the execution, hardware-wise.

you can tell this is being recorded on an older emulator because of the errors in the BGM of The Machine
The same error is in the Sonic Mega Collection version. Personally, I like it, probably cause I've heard it so many times.

I never knew there were additional bonus stages you can unlock for collecting all the rings.
There is only one bonus stage, though, so I only attain it in the first level where it is by far the easiest to collect all the rings.
I don't know if you can revisit the one bonus level multiple times, though.
