- The Metroidvania subgenre has given us some incredible games over the years. For this list, we’ll be looking at games that had us backtracking all while exploring a huge map. However, we won’t be including any "Metroid" or "Castlevania" games, instead focusing on the best games inspired by those franchises' design and gameplay. Our list includes “Steamworld Dig 2” (2017), “Ori and the Blind Forest” (2015), “Yoku’s Island Express” (2018), “Hollow Knight” (2017), and more! There are so many indie Metroidvanias games out there, so we might have missed your favorite. Let us know which one you think is best in the comments below!

Blasphemous 2 really delivered. I was skeptical about a sequel but they did an amazing job. It surpasses the first game, highly recommend it.
Blasphemouses are awesome
Blasphemous 1 had more content but 2 had better gameplay. I hope they release some DLC's and give some additional content

My 1 and 2 were very obvious as the genre is named literally from these 2 specific games.
The original Metroid, not Super Metroid. The NES original was the first "metroidvania"

I adore the Messenger, it's one of my favorite games of all time.

I'm surprised not a single Shantae game was on the list, but if I were to have one here, it would definitely be Pirate's Curse.

So glad to see Yokus on this list!! This was one of the most unique (and fun!) metroidvanias I ever played! If you haven't played it yet, definitely check it out!
Bloodstained is so fuckin' great. I wonder if a sequel might be in the works.
I hope Konami came to their senses and asked Iga to make more Castlevania but I doubt it 😢
It's boring. And some of the levels literally look like they're made from generic assets from the Unreal store.
They confirmed a sequel a while ago, but we won't hear much about it until the last DLC for the first one comes out.
Aeterna Noctis is one of my all time fave Metroidvania's... currently going through Afterimage and it's thoroughly enjoyable so far.
I'm playing that right now man! I think it might be better than Hollow knight. I think the pacing and music is better.
Dead cells is a must have!
Honorable mentions go to Deaths Gambit Afterlife, Infernax, Moonscars & Ghost Song.. Seriously some great Metroidvanias..
*Hollow Knight* is definitely and totally one of THE Most True Metroidvania Masterpiece there is, along with *Ori and the Blind Forest!*

Ori will of wisp is more.of a metroidvania imo but nonetheless the ori series are masterpiece for real

Dead cells bro, DLC return to Castlevania.
Dead Cells also has DLC "Everyone is Here part 1
And part 2, all of vania's metroid characters are in dead cells.
Hollow knight is such a masterpiece & one of the greatest metroidvania games ever
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror should get an honorable mention here. It's also a metroidvania.
Axiom Verge 1&2 are the most Metroid like game I’ve played in a while. Hope they continue to make more games like them.
I enjoyed the first but couldn't continue with the second, my stomach ache and felt existential crisis.
Metroidvania games are awesome, I really like 2d action platformer games like Cuacamalee 1 & 2. 😆

Axiom Verge’s music is Top Level 80s techno!

Ender lilies should be here. Also, I really love Touhou luna night, even when is a very short metroidvania but it has an addictive system play
I would add F. I. S. T Forged in shadow Torch. It's a really cool steam punk esk fighter
I am currently playing a metroidvania too called Monster Sanctuary. It combines the 2D exploration of a metroidvania with a monster-collecting mechanic like Pokémon. Plus it's really challenging.

Two recommendations that I think are quite good, Timespinner and Ender Lilies.
This genre has the best batting average out of any. So many good games
I am glad that at least one out of the two Ori games is on the list. They're some of the best games I've ever played. But if you ask me, I think Ori and the Will of the Wisps should've been on the list instead of the Blind Forest.
Yup agree will of the wisp is more metroidvania than the first imo but both are great
i think the first one should be listed not because one is more metroidvania than the other but because they are both amazing and since its the first game, i think it should be there, the secxond one is just a improvment over the first one, the one that bring ore was the first.
Environmental Station Alpha is top 5 MV material IMO
Shadow Complex features in the intro but not in the listing, odd. Buy it!

I search this headline at least once every 6 months to make sure I haven't missed any gems.
I think Salt and Sanctuary would be classed as a metoidvania soulslike. Played the beta of Last Faith, and Spirit of the Samurai looks amazing.
I would probably include Skul:the hero slayer on that list. It is very underrated but has really amazing story and gaemeplay.
Great video! I love Bloodstained as I'm an old school Metroidvania player but Hollow Knight absolutely wins. Also, no mention of The Messenger? This should arguably take the number one spot! One of the best games I've ever played hands down!
I never comment but😮 afterimage is a newer indie MV and quite frankly amazing. And honestly salt and sanctuary is one of the best I've ever played. It's straight up 2D dark souls and was made by like 1 guy, or one guy and his wife or something like that.
I would like to introduce Afterimage too. Just beat it recently.
I liked Steam World dig 2 very well done tohave that feeling you always on a mission searching for something. It doesnt lookthat good but when you play it, it really hooked me in. Hollow knight and ori 1-2 are obviously great. Axiom I havnt played yet
La-mulana is my second best metroidvania game, just amazing!!!
No super metroid or metroid dread is a crime 😦

My two favorite MetroidVanias have got to be Bloodstained Ritual of the Night and Metroid Dread
Anyone here played F.I.S.T. or Child of Light? The latter does have an RPG feel to it, but still pretty good.

Valfaris is like a 3rd person game character in the body of a sprite.
This is the second video of metroidvania games with that pinball game in the list. I’m trying it
im not much fan of pinball, but i really loved the game, its definetlly on my top 5 best metroivanias i ever played.
my personal list is
1- ori series
2- hollow knight
3- blasphemous
4- dead cells
5 - pinball game
(of course im excluding metroid and castlevania games as they are the king anyway.)
Ender lilies is a really great game, gorgeous, not too hard, interesting story and combat. Must play
2023-2024 is going to have a huge list of new indie titles to add to this list!
Shadow complex is really good

With channels like this one, you really get the vibe that the narrator hasn't actually played or watched any of the stuff they're ranking lol.
I really want a list that includes metroid and castlevania. Just don't give bonus points for being first or most popular.

Not going to lie but the older blood stained games looked much more appealing to me than this new one. Idk why but it looks a bit to slow for my liking, and most MVs are mainly faster paced.
Replace Axiom Verge with Environmental Station Alpha. ESA blows Axiom out of the water.

super metroid was very fun until i had to start wall jumping, fuck that shit man
Cavestory isn't a metroidvania but it's one of my favourite games so I'll let it pass
For me personally it goes:
1. Super Metroid
2. Symphony of the Night
3. Hollow Knight
4. Blasphemous 2
5. Metroid Zero Mission
6. Aria of Sorrow
6. Metroid Dread
7. Portrait of Ruin
8. Ender Lilies
9. Metroid Fusion
10. Dawn of Sorrow or Order of Ecclesia (both have major flaws)
Looking forward to Silk Song and Crowsworn as well.

Not including the Will of the Wisps here? If your gonna include Blind forest might as well include its Sequel, its quite literally the same game but 10 times more better and has a lot MORE to offer.

I prefer Blind Forest, actually, but the reasoning that the narrator gave for choosing Blind Forest over the sequel is confusing.
