Not one battery issue from Ozito. It's not a problem with batteries generally, its the EGO batteries. Even my Ryobi batteries have never had a problem in five years. Still going well in a lawn mower and line trimmer.

      I believe most of my battery failures have been from misuse and or over use. Over heating and too wet.
      One thing I didn't like about the old batteries is that one couldn't tell how much charge the battery had and when the light turned red it might have discharged too far.
      With the new batteries I discharge them to the fifth light then I recharge them.
      One of the 10 amp hour batteries may have gotten too wet. It seems to work better now that it has dried out. I don't leave them in the truck bed anymore even if they are covered by a tarp..
      Any battery that is not used properly will fail.
      The Nissan Leaf is a good example of that. They don't do well in hot climates.
      Some of the EGO batteries have turned the light red on the charger and it won't charge until the battery cools. Some of the batteries that failed I believe overheated too many times. Heat and cold can cause lithium battery degradation.
      For EVs it is recommended that the battery not be discharged below 20 percent and charged up to only 80 percent to make the battery last longer.
      What I couldn't say is why anyone else's battery failed, but these are some things I would consider before blaming the company for making bad batteries.

      Mine, too. My two second generation EGO batteries after less than one year, are failing with red light flashing on charger, when in use and also when not in use - periodically. The first generation one (without the flashing usage gauge) is the oldest battery and still runs perfectly. They use different cells in the second gen EGO batteries, this is well known. I've already had one second gen battery replaced last year and two more are now playing up... I have a chainsaw and line trimmer and mower. Its really frustrating...

  • @temp850
    @temp850 2 года назад +11

    Apparently the best EGO batteries have Duracell cells inside and the newer ones with the usage gauge flashing light, are Samsung cells inside. The older, Duracell models have no letter 'T' at the end of the model number. My Duracell 5Ah one works great but the two Samsung EGO batteries flash red periodically and won't charge properly or work properly. They can be fully charged when doing this or half full or near empty, its not an overheating when in use issue. The Samsung batteries definitely seem inferior in real-world usage. I've had one replaced under warranty and now two more of the Samsung cell EGO batteries (with the letter 'T' in the model number) are flashing red again. It's not an automated depletion, battery drainage thing, as I have been using them once or twice a week...

      Fwiw, I had my original 7.5Ah battery giving me issues occasionally last summer and it has worked great after I cleaned the contacts on the battery (and my mower).
      In the last few days, I had that battery show all lights blinking red anytime I tried pressing the button to check its level. On reddit, many people have shared different sequences of holding the button, putting it on the charger, pressing the button, etc to "reset" the battery, but none helped me. What did was dropping the battery onto a rubber mat from about 6" up. No idea why, but many people on Reddit claimed it worked so I gave it a try and immediately afterwards the battery showed full when I checked it. I just edged with it and it gave me no problems at all. Ymmv.

  • @soccerslus
    @soccerslus 3 года назад +23

    The batteries are rated for and estimated 1000ish charge cycles so if you use these things every day and you're charging 2-3 times a day, that's roughly 66 working weeks. So just over 1 year service on the battery is about expected.
    My estimate in your charge rates might not be accurate though.

    • @temp850
      @temp850 2 года назад +4

      My new generation EGO batteries with the flashing usage gauge (they use different branded cells than the first gen batteries) have played up after six months to one year of use. I've only used about fifty cycles of my line trimmer, mower and chainsaw but the are just not reliable batteries and don't charge or work well all of the time. The first gen EGO battery that I have with the Duracell cells works perfect all of the time.

    Most people buy into the reviews that are based off brand new or within a year of ownership. A ton of paid influencers too. The battery failures are swept under the rug from a product review standpoint because after 3 years it’s a different model and hence failure rates aren’t captured. Thanks for your reply! I appreciate it. SO, if this is the main way you power your hand equipment, it seems like a good idea to keep a very close eye on how many cycles you’re getting out of each battery. And when power drops off, try to estimate how soon you lose 20+% of it. Otherwise, how will you ever know your cost of doing business? Not keeping track of this would be like not keeping gas receipts and just estimating it each month without looking at the cost of a gallon of gas.

      @@QuietLawn I would be cautious here.
      A few issues to overcome if repairing:
      (1) dis/reassembly so that it is not compromised structurally (unlikely if housing is ultrasonically welded and/or permanently glued)
      (2) you are comfortable with the liability and repair is financially viable
      (3) the battery cell(s) are the cause and solution to the issue (not the enclosed in epoxy unrepairable BMS circuit board or other peripherals such as your charger or tool)
      (4) having a viable source for matched ego replacement cells (an old battery?) or 3rd party equivalents (unlikely given EGOs have the proprietary phase-change heat absorbing wrapper)
      (5) electrical knowledge to take this on or a trusted 3rd party who does
      From the perspective of an electrical engineer w/ favorable odds to tackle this sort of thing, if (1) didn't kill the idea from the start it might be worth considering if enough money was at stake, there was free time to burn, and it would be for personal use. I wouldn't recommend most people mess with these batteries. A LARGE amount of energy is stored in even the smallest EGO batteries and they can easily explode and/or catch fire when things go wrong. It would be terrible if a customer or employee was injured by a battery you repaired.
      I've tested a number of competing products and Husqvarna seemed to be the best alternative from a performance and portfolio perspective. I went with EGO because for the price, I could generally buy two or more EGOs for the cost of one Husqvarna. I have concerns like you. Fresh out of the box, two of the five EGO tools I just purchased failed.
      It would be great to learn more about this such as if specific tools (particularly the blower or mower given their consumption) are causing it.

My issue too is with the batteries. I have gotten less than two years out of each battery for my large home property use. I too will likely change for the same reasons. Batteries are terrible quality..

    Check physical condition of cells in pack inspecting welds and balance leads. Check each parallel group of cells with your voltage meter and balance up individually charging each group till everything 4.2v. If cell group bad, replace or just buy all new cells (probably Samsung 25r but check) very cheap hi output cells and build new pack into battery casing. Only other issue could be lousy BMS or chargers:)

    I had a 7.5 battery stop after a few months. When I pushed the button, three green lights would come on in succession, and then all five of them would turn red. I meant to get a replacement, but life intervened, and two months later I pushed the button again, and it turned green. So I put it in the rapid charger, and it said it was fully charged. It has worked ever since. I am wondering if an "overcharging" issue is making some batteries seem like they are failing. In any case, it is still working, and all the other batteries I have bought are still working (old and new). I have a 5.0 battery that came with my mower about 5 years ago. It won't hold a charge if you store it, but if you use it right after charging...it still works perfectly. (Edit: as suggested below, I almost never let my batteries go to zero. I don't know if that is a factor also.)

    There is a lot to know about batteries.
    Most modern batteries it's actually better to keep them between 20-80% charge.
    Also heat are a batteries enemy.
    If you are having battery issues I would make sure to let the battery cool down before charging it instead of throwing it right on the charger after mowing. Also if you don't have a cold place to store the mower at least take the batteries out and put them somewhere cool. These are not tips for ego batteries just batteries in general.

I use them on my hand tools and a push mower to get into small areas. (1 full year so far and no failures of tools or batts). I’m doing an experiment with 4 new 7.5ah batts and the 2-stage thrower this winter. Going to see how much it can do on each charge. Hoping you can give me info that I can either confirm or contradict with my own numbers in January. Please tel us more! Thanks for all your vids and advice!

    We're going on three years of use with our EGO mower. I've had to repair the mower itself when the speed control stopped working reliably, that was a simple repair, but now we're having battery problems and we're not sure if it's the battery or the charger. Sometimes the charger lights remain on after removing the battery, and usually that means the battery will die after only a few minutes use (even though the charger indicated a full charge). Weirdly, the charger lights remain on sometimes even after unplugging the unit. Any idea what's up with that ? Anyway, I can get the charger to work again by unplugging it until the charge lights go off, then restarting the unit, but I'm thinking that something is near the end of its lifetime. We have a very large lawn, the mower has been in hard use during the summers here, so I'll admit that it's been used plenty. Btw, I also have to sharpen the blades before every mowing. Is that true for everyone ? Thanks for the video, we're considering a rider and we're asking ourselves the same question about sticking with EGO.

    so my Ego self propelled mower is about six years old which I rarely use and I have a blower also which I use a lot. The two batteries I have will run the blower with no problem. When I try them on the mower, the mower shows an orange flashing light. So I took it in to the Ego recommended mower repair shop thinking there was a problem with the wiring or whatever on the mower. They said it was the BATTERY!!! He used his battery and it started. Put in mine -- nothing. My charger shows that the batteries are fully charged. Fully charged but not the same power???? But the mower must use more power than the blower. I have ordered a new battery and hopefully it will be good.

    My EGO battery stopped working and would not charge. After a week or so, I bought another battery for $250. (By that time, EGO went from being provided by Home Depot to Lowe's). One day months later, I unknowingly set that old battery on the charger and it charged fine, worked fine.
    Last week, I happened to notice the new battery, which was set on a corkboard shelf, was flashing. It was warm to touch. Now I'm going to start storing them outside in a detached shed. The only problem with that is how hot it gets in summer. These things seem too questionable.

    My 7.5 battery that came with the lawn mower failed after 12.5 months, no more than 50 uses. It would run down to 4 bars after 15 minutes then shut off and blink red. Not sure if it was the electronics in the battery or the cells, because the voltage was at 53V when it cut out. I called for warranty service and got through quickly. Sounds like their customer service is based out of India. They went through a flowchart of questions and determined the battery was bad, and then I had a new one delivered in a week. My guess would be now that they have a commercial 28ah to differentiate the commercial market they've felt its ok to drop the quality on the rest however the commercial backpack isn't suitable to everything and less versatile, id rather run their original backpack with the 10amp and have to swap batteries than the 28amp... their equipment was already pretty solid i think I'd rather use a skin for 5-6 years and then buy a new one rather than a more expensive carbon fibre heavy duty thing. Keep in mind most rare Earth's are from China whoms the west are in economic war with... probably affects the price and availability of the materials needed.
