I have had 3 gas powered mowers in the past and ALL of them were horrible at cutting, and they required SO much maintenance and hauling them in every fall for further repairs. Briggs & Stratton, Craftsmen, Toro. I finally gave up and my neighbor had an EGO 21 self propelled mower for me to try. At first I was skeptical about it but my neighbor said hold on to hit and try it for a while so I kept it for two years and mowed his yard, mine, and my neighbor lady’s as well. I listened to this guy yap and my own experience was excellent and I highly recommend it. My front lawn is St Augustine, my south side and back are Bermuda. I have used 1-6 settings differently for both and as well my neighbors and EGO PREFORMED PERFECTLY. The battery last much longer than this person claims. My neighbor moved and took his EGO mower, hedge trimmer, weed eater with him. I purchased my own and I am glad I have because EGO HAS WORKED WONDERS- it does far better than any heavy duty gas powered mower I would never listen to this guy EVER
Other points you didn't factor in: If you're sick of maintaining oil levels and changes/gas/filters/carburator maintenance, float bowls, cleaning injenction ports, winterizing..etc...After 15 years, I'm SICK of gas engine maintenance and want simplicity. Well, there's always the reel mower or sythe for exercise, I suppose! ..thanks!
I bought this mower 2 seasons ago. This season, it wouldn't start due to some electrical issue. I called the EGO service and after a few questions, they looked if there was any repair service nearby. The closest one was a bit too far, so they decided to just send me a brand new one. Honestly love it and very surprised with the quality of service.
I bought my ego this year. Totally love it. I only cut the grass 2-3times a year. My reason was maintenance. Getting gas. Checking oil.filter. Filling it with gas. Cleaning carburetor. Replacing rope. Spark plug..list goes on. I’m a automotive mechanic and after fixing everyone else’s cars and such I didn’t want to work in my lawnmower..just makes life a little easier.
I have Ego, mower, trimmer, blower and edger. I love their products, this was my second season using them without fail. I am using it on 6k sq ft lawn and in a neighborhood. My friends say it sounds like a box fan on high lol. I have 2 batteries, rarely do I run out of juice on the first but if I do it’s nice to have the second one. Charges in less than 45 mins. Another reason to get one is if you need to take it with you in an SUV or car trunk. Don’t have to worry about stinking up your car!
I own the first generation E-GO mower. It's one of the best things I ever bought. I mow 1 to 2 times a week and I haven't noticed any appreciable loss of battery run time. I have a large yard, so sometimes I have to charge it for half an hour to finish up. No biggie, I just edge and blow for half an hour. It's a huge game changer to not have to maintain a gas engine. HUGE. The only maintenance is sharpening the blade each spring, which is quick with a cheap grinder. If you have a small shed, it saves you so much space because you can store it standing up. It's footprint is about 2x1 ft. Can't do that with a gas mower. The quality of the build is far superior than any gas mower I have had. There's no reason my Honda couldn't have a nice, well fitting, easy to collapse, comfortable handle, but for some reason every gas mower has cheap steel tube handles with wingnuts that you can KINDA fold over. The height adjustment is leagues better, as pointed out here, the thing is light as hell and so quiet that I can listen to an audio book or music while I mow. It's just better in almost every way. I guess they are supposed to have less torque than a gas mower, but I haven't noticed it bogging down in thick grass any more than my Honda did. Keep the blade sharp and it's a non issue for cool weather grasses. I could see how it might be an issue for those thick Florida grasses. Did I mention it has freakin headlights?? I thought that was a silly gimmick until I was able to finish up my lawn at sunset because the bright headlights allow me to see the cut line in the dark. I would have never known that was a good idea until I had it. I don't see how your "reduced air volume when it's lowered" complaint wouldn't apply to any lawn mower. Why are you acting like that is specific to this EGO?
I have used a cordless electric mower for 22 years. Had a fescue lawn for 12 years, then a St. Augustine. Currently using a 12 year old B&D that I paid $400 for, and I purchased a second battery for $120. Still going strong, quiet, battery is easily removable. It starts first time, every time - even after being unused for 3-4 months over the winter. I’ll never go back to gas.
I too have this mower and paid $650 for it and in season 3 it developed an electrical issue. Call Ego and rather than sending me 90 miles for a warranty repair they sent me a new mower. Great customer service and have since purchased the trimmer, edger and blower with the added battery. Good stuff!!
Maintenance on my ego is next to nil. Just sharpen the blade, that's it. No carburetor issues getting gummed up with bad gas. No smell. Not having to purchase gas. The list goes on and on. I love my ego mower. Just bought the newest select cut for my son as he was having all kinds of mechanical/carburetor issues with his gas model.
I got my ego 3 years ago, it’s amazing. Lawn is small and flat, just under 10k feet. Also upgraded to ego cordless blower for $100 using the battery from the mower
I've had mine for a year and it's worked like a champ. I have a very big yard, so it does require a recharge about 2/3 of the way through. As I told my friends who questioned a battery powered mower, "The battery last longer than I do" so it's not a big deal. Yesterday my son and I cut the grass after about 3 weeks of heavy rain and so our grass was over 9 inches in some spots. This time it required 3 recharges even cutting at the highest cutting height. But again, I'm getting to the point (age) that I'm ok if I have to stop and take a break ;)
I bought this new Ego this spring and it’s done great for me and my 23,000+ sq ft yard. Obviously, it takes more than one charge. I mow about 2/3 of the yard on one charge, then switch over to doing my trimming and edging and blowing while the battery recharges. It fills up enough in that half hour or so for me to then finish the yard. I feel most criticisms of electric mowers focus on the idea that they’re only good for small yards, as though people can’t manage their time wiser, like I’ve described above. I’ve even found the headlights useful for finishing up the yard into the dusk, since I’m not as concerned about the noise disturbing my neighbors since it’s so quiet. My wife can’t even hear it from inside the house. The only day to day problem I have with it is the grip. Traditional mowers have two levers, one for blade engage, and one for drive. The Ego has one for blade, (though it starts backwards with the labeled power button actually being the safety,) and just two thumb buttons on either side for drive. These buttons are annoying to keep depressed, especially on turns or hills or whenever I’m not applying direct pressure to the back of the mower. After a couple hours it definitely cramps my hands up pretty good in a way a traditional mower with a lever for each control never did. I’ve tried different handlebar adjustments to find a more comfortable grip, but nothing really helps. Not a major concern, but if you already have grip problems in your hands or something like cerebral palsy or whatever, I could see this being a legitimate problem for you.
I went ego with this mower and the weed whip/blower combo pack and snow blower. Reason for me is I was sick of dealing with carb issues and gas and ect. Main reason I work a lot of hours and my wife is a stay at home mom and now she can easily do yard work when I'm to busy to and she actually keeps up with it way better then I ever did.
I have that mower with the 7.5 amp battery for 3 yrs now. Also own the blower, trimmer, and hedger with their respective batteries..... zero issues, highly recommend
Thank you for this. I have used an EGO mower since 2016. I sold it and bought an EGO with self-propelled. I have a 2015 electric Ryobi riding mower. I cut four lawns. I love all this electric stuff. This year I replaced my batteries in the Ryobi for $1100 and a battery for my EGO older mower.
After struggling with a gas mower and the pull starter I decided my only option was an Ego. Have had it 3 years now and love it. Even my daughter likes it...... What a benefit having a helper!! I also got the weed whacker and blower. Am very happy with my purchases.
I wish Doc would have done this video earlier. His take on this mower is spot on. I bought an EGO self-propelled mower, plus string trimmer and blower for my small Bermuda grass lawn in 2017. I LOVED the mower and all its features EXCEPT that it will not cut Bermuda grass short once its fully into the aggressive growing season. It will bog down and literally rip the Bermuda grass out by the roots. I sold it to my buddy for his St. Augustine lawn here in Houston and it works brilliantly... he's very pleased. I did keep the trimmer and blower and really, really like both units.
I have had my EGO mower about 5 years. One BIG tip is as soon as the you notice the original battery is not giving as much charge as it did new, contact the Service Department. They will send you a new battery for FREE. So now I have 2 batteries. My original one is still decent but was only at about 70%. Really happy with my EGO. I recently bought the EGO fan and it is awesome also.
I have owned an ego for over a year. It is the best. Their pole saw, edger and hedge trimmer all operate off of the same battery. Best products ever and highly recommend!
I love the channel. You are my "Go-To" when I need any advise. I've bought things that I never knew I needed because of your channel and I love it all! So thank you and keep up the great work. I do have a however though . . . I've been a gas mower guy for decades, but after 8 mowers (At $400 to $600 each) in the last 25 years, I bought the metal deck, self-propelled 21" EGO. I have 14,000 sq. ft. and it is hands down the best mower I have ever owned and I will never, ever, go back to gas. I am not a brand guy, I just like what I like and don't what I don't. And I really like this mower. Since buying the bought a blower and a trimmer. Those are also better than my old gas ones. PRO's; Convenience - Put the battery in an go. No more gas, oil, fouled plugs, servicing, filters, etc. Emissions - Zero, enough said. Noise - Mine is a whisper compared to gas mowers. I don't have any problems, none. I mow at different levels at different times of the year, even at the lowest level. BTW if you cut at the lowest level, don't cut you grass when it's wet and you won't get all those clippings under your mower. CON's; Not as heavy. If you like stripes, you'll need to keep going over the same pattern to make/keep them. No other Con's. Love my mower!
My girl place, needs a new mower, i really want her to buy this brand because she wants to buy a cheap one, but im the one who mowes the lawn, an daddy wants a good one.
I cut my all hill .5 acre lawn with ego and it’s amazing! Sorry to have to disagree but no bog down in tall grass is awesome!! Also the self propelled is very nice for hills
I have a Bermuda lawn with an ego mower. Works great even on the lowest setting. I have never had grass clippings underneath the deck. Of course I also don’t mow while I am running the sprinklers.
This is probably the most realistic review I've seen about Ego Mower. I have the first generation Ego Power Mower and it chokes on grass clippings if I cut them low without the bag attachment like you stated. Also, the battery has a tendency to overheat during hot weather and it's safety will shut it down when I'm about 2/3 done with mowing my lawn--not a big deal since the down time allows me to drink some water or ice cold beer. Overall, I'm happy with Ego Power tools for the fact I can swap batteries between tools and no need to mess with gas and oil lubricants. I just bought the Ego polesaw without the battery and battery charger to add to my collection which includes the mower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, and weed whacker all of which I bought before they introduced the Multi-Head System.
I use all ego products for my mowing business. Best way to stock up on batteries is to buy refurbished items from acme tools that come with the battery. The backpack blower comes with a 5ah battery and it's $199. 5ah batteries are $250 alone. Sometimes acme has 10% off when you buy 2 refurbished ego items so you can get 2 batteries for around $350 and have some spare blowers. Or you could sell the blowers on offer up without the batteries for $100 and that makes your 2 batteries price go down to $150 instead of $500.
A few years ago, my wife got me the trimmer. A year later when I replaced the carb on my mower for the third time, we got the mower too. It’s a single cut self propelled. Big differences I see to yours is the front wheels on mine seem further forward, which makes tight corners tough. Also the battery door is the other way, and the light switch is on the body, not handle. But I love it. I can mow my 4K of grass twice on a charge, and I only charge my trimmer battery a couple times a year. Good stuff. The high lift blade really made the mower bag a LOT better. It even sounds angrier. Maybe the second blade makes a lot of difference already? I dunno, but the other blade works wonders for me. It sucks up leaves like a pro!
This is the most accurate review of EGO battery lawn mower I have seen on RUclips - I like the recommendations you gave. I have been using EGO self-propelled for five years and I just bought an extra one this past Summer. I appreciate your tips on everything you have been publishing. Thank you.
EGO has great engineering. For a normal suburban yard they work great if you have at least two batteries. They are expensive but remember that gas mowers require constant maintenance. Now get a hedge trimmer and a leaf blower that use the same battery. What I like best is that I can listen to my Audible books while mowing, because of the lower noise. Also, the 650 Leaf Blower is so powerful that I can shovel my driveway with it in the winter if the snow is fluffy.
After success with my EGO blower and hedge trimmer I purchased a self propelled mower in three years ago. I have one 7.5 and two 2.5 amp batteries which have held up well. If the grass doesn’t get ahead of me I can cut the yard and still have enough battery to use it in the blower to clean off the mower and patio. The higher the grass the shorter the cut time. I normally use the mulching plug, but occasionally the bagger. I don’t cut my Bermuda until it has dried out. Our yard is between a third and half an acre. The only gass equipment I have now is a 42 inch deck yard tractor I’ve had for a good 15 years that will not be replace and a big backpack blower used when the leave come down. While I have never had a perfect piece of equipment I have no plans to go back to gass for anything but my backpack blower. I have enjoyed your posts, we moved to Georgia in 09 and had always had St. Augustine so your insight on Bermuda has been helpful, thanks.
Finally broke down and bought an EGO electric push mower this spring for our small suburban yard, now I'm watching the videos. One of the big reasons I bought it was the lack of noise. After mowing cemeteries throughout high school and early 20s without hearing protection I have damaged ears. My kids are starting to mow and they either won't wear hearing protection or have their ear buds in and cranked up to tinnitus so I decided to give one a try. If the battery holds out I'll never buy another gas mower again. Course I'm hoping to get 20 years out of this mower.
Pre-pandemic, I bought a reconditioned Ego (presumably not the current year's model) from Home Depot but had mixed feelings about it. It came with the larger battery, which was good for two mowings of my yard. The single lever height adjustment is nice, but once I have the height set for my yard I wouldn't use it again. The killer for me was that it didn't cut that well, even with the high lift blade that I put in it. It would miss tufts of grass and when bagging it didn't vacuum anywhere near as well as my old Honda gas mower. The drive mechanism is noisy, as you can hear in the video and you have to learn to let off on it as you come up at right angles to obstructions, like a concrete garden border, or you can't roll it back away due to the wheels being locked in drive mode. You have to drag it back. The other negative for me was that you could only adjust cut height in 1 inch increments. I learned that Toro had come out with an electric and I ended up returning the Ego and getting the Toro. It has a smaller battery but it is fine for cutting my lawn; I recharge after each mowing. It adjusts its height in 1/2 inch increments and vacuums almost as well as my Honda did. The drive mechanism is vastly superior: there is a second part of the handle that is spring-loaded and the mower reacts to pressure to go faster and maintain its speed relative to the pressure from how fast you are walking; and it is much quieter. You can install the bag coming down between the handles, which you can't with the Ego, and it packs an amazing amount into the bag. It cuts almost as well as my Honda did, with just an occasional missed blade that I have to go back over. The handle folds over without having to collapse it and you can then stand it on end. It also comes with a washout port on the deck to make cleaning the underside easier. The current model Ego may have corrected some of the issues I found but buyers should be aware of other options, as well.
I have the Ego 21inch select cut and McLane 20inch reel mower. I cut first with the McLane then cut second with the Ego to get the clippings. They complement wery well. Thanks for your very educated detailed reviews Doc.
I have had my EGO lawn mower for 2 months now... and am very happy with the purchase! However... while the EGO promotional material lists the battery lasting for 60 minutes... that is affected by several things. If, for instance, you use the power drive and the mulching blade, there is no way you are going to get 60 mins of mowing time with the 7.5Ah battery. That gets cut down to about 40 mins. I can maybe get another 10 mins if I push the mower myself. Another issue is how 'green' your grass is. This year the rain has been just ridiculous... and the grass has been very wet (internally saturated). That makes clogging more frequent with the mulching blade which also kills battery faster. None of these are deal breakers for me... I would buy another one in a heartbeat. I also have the EGO string trimmer and chain saw. All three have met or exceeded my expectations.
Loving my 2nd gen 60 volt Greenworks mower! Cuts great at any height. Plus it has a turbo over ride button to suck up the leaves in the fall. In fact I’ve went all cordless with all my outdoor tools. Hedge trimmers are amazing. The 610 CFM blower is a beast, along with the string trimmer. I could’ve be happier and they save tons of time cause of the no maintenance. The best thing is the mower always starts! Even when it’s 20 degrees outside.
I've got the older EGO 21" push brushed mower. Had in for about three years. So here are some thoughts on the matter. My gas mower had jets for sea level and NO adjustments. I'm at 6,000ft so it ran very rich, like crap. Required a lot of maintenance. fouled the plugs all the time and the air filter always seemed plugged. Often very hard to start. By the time i got the Gas mower running i was to tired to mow the yard. The EGO electric is always ready to go, just pop the battery in and i am mowing. Got two batteries but one will mow the whole yard no problem. It is very quiet, you can't here it in the house. You do not get that tingling feeling in your hands from all the vibrations. It gets the job done. Down side is the EGO is about 10 pounds heavier, a foot longer, and does not mow as nice. If you get the New EGO Brush-less dual battery 21" self propelled you should be happy.
I've been using an ego 21-in mower for about 7 months now. It's the most amazing mower that I probably ever used even better than some gas powered mowers that I've used. Here's the problem.. it's plastic on plastic gearing and this is where the problem starts. Already starting to have problems it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that plastic on plastic is not going to last over a period of time and a short period of time from what I have come to find out.
Have owned Ego gear since 2016/17, aside from one battery needing to be replaced under warranty the gear has WORKED perfectly, ZERO MX sans sharpening the blade. I have a 1/4 acre lot and it's fabulous. It's the Tesla of mowers.
I just bought it and because of a flat tire it had to mow almost the full 3/4 acre lawn. Lawn was really tall too due to getting the lawn aerated and over-seeded. Did it like a champ and still had about 1/3 battery left. Main reason for the purchase was for upright storage in the garage. It’s general use won’t be for the full lawn, just our drainage ditch and a few other areas my John Deere can’t get. But I love the ego line. Originally bought the new trimmer and 650cfm blower (originally bought the 580, but exchanged for the 650) this year. Will get the pole saw and edger next year. I’m a full blown ego fanboy. Debating selling my Husqvarna chainsaw and buying the ego there too. Always buy the kits though, unless you don’t need anymore run time! It’s by far the cheapest way to get the batteries!
I have used it for 2 years and i cut twice a week on the 3rd height setting and i have no problems. I did take it to a mower repair shop to sharpen blades the end of last season but other than that it works just as good or better than gas mowers.
I bought the EGO in May because the old gas mower engine compression was bad enough my wife and daughter couldn't start it anymore. They love it. Quieter, so much less vibration back to their hands, so much lighter and they don't have to mess with gas either. The only thing I'm disappointed about is the lack of suction. In small spots of no grass that get leaves in them, the EGO doesn't suck them out like the gas mower does. The gas also if I'm just wanted to get up the leaves and not cut the grass will bring in leaves from outside the deck. So I'm keeping the gas around for me to use a few times a year, and all Fall to do what the EGO doesn't. Our lot is a half acre and the EGO lasts the hour it takes to mow it.
Just got home with my new Lm2156sp. Drove over an hour to get it from ace hardware. Can’t wait to break her in!! Bought the 650 blower last year. INCREDIBLE TOOL
I am a fan of your honest reviews. Much appreciated.👍 I have the Ego mower, Ego snow-blower and the Ego weedwacker bundle with the blower. I switched due to less maintenance and it was a great switch. 👌
I’ve been using it for almost a year on my Tifway 419 hybrid turf Bermuda. It’s working well. Does 1” pretty well, LED light lets me mow into the evening. You get clippings issues when you’re working on wet lawns. Otherwise it cuts clean and you can bag or mulch. You can’t look for reel mower features on this, they do make electric reel mower. It’s like comparing Apples to Oranges.
I just got one it's AWESOME. I didn't have a problem cutting grass low has I needed to and even bagged tall water grass. And I wouldn't never buy a tool only because if look at the price, the lawnmower with no battery is $500 then the charger is $200 then the battery is $350 that's $1050 so when you get it all together for $650 is a steal.
Batttery powered lawn mowers work just fine on bermuda grass. I’ve used one for a while and cannot tell the difference unless you let your lawn go and get too height. And all lawns that you cut too low aren’t going to look good without a lot of maintenance. Also don’t forget about older people or people that have back issues or other medical reasons that make gas harder to operate.
3:33 Never mow wet grass and you’ll maintain your air volume and have better performance. Good advice on the blower and warranty. I’m sticking with gas, for now, until that mower mulches better and battery cost comes down.
My 7.5 amp battery died 3 months after the Ego warranty ended. The battery cost was prohibitive so I bought a Greenworks mower with a big battery for close to the cost of an Ego battery by itself. I am very happy with my Greenworks mower.
My suggestion is to store your lithium batteries in the house between uses and don’t expose them to the extreme temperatures in your storeroom. My ego battery as well as my string trimmer battery has lasted 4 years with no problems this way.
My challenge with the ego was on higher levels. Didn’t feel their was enough of vacuumed to cut taller grass evenly. Left a number of stray long blades. Tried a couple of them and ended up returning them and sticking with my rider, just cuts more consistently.
I have 1.5 acres of Bermuda and mixed grasses, ( I push mow about 1/2 acre) and I have never had a problem with my Ego, but I also can't imagine cutting my Bermuda as low as he suggests. I never cut lower than 1.5 inches due to hot summers. I would agree with his assessment if you want a golf course type of lawn. I have had the self-propelled for about 3 years and never had a battery issue unless I am cutting at night and using the self-propelled feature. I only use that to assist on inclines or if I am getting tired. It's been a great mower, and I would never go back to gas. The only thing I would prefer is a steel deck.
I have the 7.5 battery and have no issues with at all. Cuts all my yard in one charge. The gas is so bad with all the additives they put in it, I just got sick and tired of having to tear the carb apart every season to get them started.
My battery lasted 3 years. Somewhere in the vicinity of $400 for the battery so take that into account when evaluating economics. I have centipede and it does ok but I must admit the cut isn’t perfect. I can’t cut on the lowest setting. Mower doesn’t have the power to mow at the lowest setting where my grass is very thick. Not sure if it’s improved. I got one of the first ones.
I lucked out as Home Depot was transitioning Ego out after their agreement changed... I was able to pickup a backpack blower WITH a 7.5Ah battery for $180. I definitely had to do a double take and would've gotten more than one if it hadn't been the last one on the floor.
Really great review. Wish I'd seen it before buying. Living in Ireland the grass is definitely too wet for this to work efficiently. Full disclosure, I'm a landscaper and wanted to switch to all battery tools. I use the mower almost every day for most of the year. The pros are the storage and quietness. The cons are that it doesn't work well on grass that's even slightly damp. MAJOR CON. The batteries are terrible. 3 of my 4 batteries have given up the ghost. 2 only worked for two weeks. The tools themselves are great but the batteries let the whole thing down imo.
You should be aware of the self-discharge feature on EGO batteries, if they're stored longer than a month they will discharge down to 30%. Since you mentioned you were getting it for a beach house. I love these batteries though, the 7.5 Ah is a beast!
I purchased the GreenWorks Pro 80v about one month ago. I must say it's awesome not having to deal with the sound, smell, oil, fuel, etc. Very easy to use and cuts nice. But, the downside is you'll need at least, two battery packs. My house is 3/4 of an acre and will use every bit of them 2 batteries. The price of them are almost equal to a gas mower. ($240+)
Beautiful lawn! I am researching a lawn mower for my home and I really don't want to deal with gasoline. We have long winters in canada and I have a small yard. Your video is really helpful and I think I will buy the same mower you got. Thank you and Keep it up
Doc, I have the original/first year Ego mower, blower and string mower from 2014. I have two 5amp and three 2.5amp batteries. Zero issues with the batteries and the three tools...zero issues after 7 years! All the batteries seem like they have yet to lose any charge/capacity. The one note I will add is the tendency for the clipping to get caught up on the underside of the deck when the grass is wet/moist early in the spring. But that’s it. No other gripes. I am now looking at upgrading to the newest Ego select cut 21” mower with brushless motor and higher rpm to the blade. Love to hear what you think about your Ego since you posted this video
I have a tall fescue lawn (Northern Virginia) and I will get an Ego in the Spring. Good point on the air volume and I am thinking that those who cut low like your beautiful lawn and who want to go electric, they could consider an electric reel mower. (Premium models include: Swardman Electra or the Allett Liberty 43, for example). I did what you did on the blower. I have the Ego backpack blower with a 7.5 AH battery from Home Depot on close out. When Lowes gets the Ego mowers in the store this spring, I will get one of those - hopefully with a 75 AH battery. My yard has a ton of leaves in the fall and the 7.5 AH blower will do the front yard or the back yard. So when I get the mower, I will have enough blower battery capacity to do the whole yard.
I cut my 1 acre with about 2/3 acre of centipede grass at the lowest height. I use the regular blade which goes through everything-I change it annually after the first two mows when I mow through brush, etc, but I may look at that "bagging" blade. I mow here in the south close to dark when the temps drop to the lower 90s, so, yep, I love the headlights. The 5A batteries rock-run time runs 45-60 minutes using the top speed; the price doesn't concern me. Love my Ego mower-quiet, no fumes, no gas, performance. Hoping Ego designs a battery riding mower for when I get really old.
I stumbled upon your channel while looking for a new mower. We’re moving from Pennsylvania to Florida and I’m glad that you addressed the issue of the warm season grasses. Thank you for a great review and I’ll keep all this information in the back of my head when making my decision. I have subscribed to your channel. Mike
Great video ,very informative and honest . There are a couple points that I feel are worth mentioning . My neighbor has the self propelled model I have the push type . HUGE difference . The obvious one would be weight . Not much ,around 10 Lbs. But think about what moves that weight . My 55 Lb mover is so easy to push I have no problem doing my 9500 sq. feet lawn . In fact I can mow the lawn 1.75 (almost 2) times on 1 charge . My neighbor can do 3/4 of his 9500 sq. feet lawn on 1 charge . Takes a lot of battery to move that extra weight . The propulsion system also takes power away from the blade . Another point is the cost of the unit . The self propel feature can add around $ 150 .00 . Unless your on a very steep hill ., the push type is great . I have Zoysia grass , no problem and am very pleased with the cut . I clean the underside of the deck after each use with a wet rag and spray on car wax . Blade gets sharpened every other cut .
I just picked up the weed whacker / blower combo. Only used them once so far but man I love them! lawnmower however probably just best to stick to a gas, well Atleast for my sized yard.
My Toro has a 2 lever height adjustment which i prefer as it allows me to set the front higher and rear lower when mulching leaves. Also leaving rear higher than front by 1 notch can be beneficial when trying to mulch grass that is a bit over grown or very lush in the springtime.
We absolutely love ours. We have over an acre and can get it all done on one charge on the lowest setting. Our grass gets high quick here in Florida during the rainy season and we mow once a week with zero issues. I feel like you’ve got this one wrong.
Doc, I agree with everything you said. Very good and accurate review. I have an older model 2100SP, blower, trimmer, and edger. I didn’t know about the extended Amazon warranty.
Actually, the larger the yard and the more you mow, the more money you save by getting off gas. Most people don't realize how much money they spend powering their gas mowers over a 10 year period. It's easily in the hundreds of dollars on a decent sized property. I've been using a puny Greenworks 40V 19 inch mower on my 2 acre property (>1/2 acre of bumpy, wild grass) since 2012 and it's only cost me a new blade (there's lots of rocks on my lawns) and new rear wheels. I'm looking forward to the new tech which will allow me to get the job done more quickly.
I bought an ego in fall of ‘19 and LOVE it. Went out afterward and bought their string trimmer and love it as well. (By the way I’ve got a large, hilly, northern lawn)
I have been using my Greenworks 60V self-propelled mower for 2 years now, and it works fine for me. I have to agree and disagree with your statements about Bermuda and Zoysia lawns as I have both in my lawn. I agree that it gets difficult to mow and keep it low, but I keep raising my mower level throughout the season and it works pretty well. In the part of my lawn that has a good deal of Zoysia mixed in, I have to actually cut it twice late in the season, as it leaves a grass-clippings trail after the first pass. But I have Greenworks 60V String Trimmer, Leaf Blower, and Hedge Trimmer and 3 batteries. These things are major fast, I don't have to crank anything, and it makes everything so easy for me. I have a small lawn but not sure how many square feet. I would not recommend these battery-powered tools for large lawns, so I agree on that part. My favorite tool is the leaf blower, as I have a River Birch tree that constantly needs maintenance year round, and I can make it all look great in a few minutes. I won't go back to a gas tool (other than my pressure washer, which is more powerful than electric ones), nor care to use the wired tools (leaf blower and string trimmer and hedge trimmer). I only use the wired leaf blower because I can connect it to a Worx attachment to clean my gutters in 15-20 minutes from the ground. I haven't found a way to connect my Greenworks leaf blower to that attachment yet. One of my sons uses EGO, but he already had the EGO snow blower, so he chose that for mowing.
Bought the Ego blower and Backpack blwer with battery in 2016; then the Ego mower with battery in 2017. Love them! Plus, the batteries are same and interchangeable with the units providing extra time when needed.
I bought one for my property in Mountain View, HI back in November 2019, I think. It's been a while. Before the switch from HD to Lowes. We get 250 inches of rain a year and grass never stops growing. Rough terrain and moss is also problem out here, but this mower can handle it. Much quieter operation, easier to store (no fuels to deal with) and easier and faster to use all around. Gotta strike when the grass is dry. Some weeks the window may be less than an hour or two. The battery running down gets me to take breaks when I should. I like the mower so much, I went back and bought the chainsaw. Haven't needed it yet, but I know I will. With solar house and EV, only things left to burn are cannabis and candles. Progress!!
Doc I got the same EGO Model as you except I use a 10 AMP battery and with this battery you have 50% more torgue as compared to the 5 AMP battery you used. The 10 AMP battery completely fills the bagger. try it and you will be amazed.
Our EGO mower is the best lawn mower we have bought. Can mow our yard twice on one charge. Small flat yard does great job. You need to buy a mower that suits your yard.
For me, i don't want to deal with the gas and all the maintenance that comes along with a gas mower so going electric was the obvious way to go. I am so glad that i ended up getting an E-go, it was the best decision i could have made.
I bought a makita which came as a deal with a line trimmer so the price was good. I then bought hedge trimmer and a leaf blower and a bunch of hand tools - all use the same two batteries that came with the lawn mower so you only have to buy the cheap 'skins' of the tools. Love them all and love not having to deal with gas and the maintenance that goes with gas engines.
These mowers look fantastic and I love the idea but we bought a Briggs and Stratton powered four stroke mower around 8 years ago, for around 1/3rd the price of the EGO, it cuts like a dream, uses standard fuel, easy to start and still on the original blades. It will cut long, short, wet and tough grass without a problem, can't see the $ value in spending three times that much, our mower was cheaper than an EGO battery, like the man said only buy a battery mower if you want a battery mower.
5 years my 7.5amp battery is weak , last only 30 minutes now., Thick grass stops it now. $399 to replace that 7.5. used to be able to do entire yard 1hr. Just missed the warranty. The rest of the mower is still in great shape. I think it's cheaper to buy the mower with the battery right now if I want to replace it. Think I paid $499 in 2018 for the mower. I have the weed eater and hedge trimmer as well.
The extended warranty through Amazon does not cover batteries. According to Amazon: "Thank you for your question. This protection plan is designed to cover your item for mechanical and electrical failures due to normal use. Replaceable components such as batteries are considered consumable items and are not covered by this plan. However, if the unit has a built-in battery that cannot be user replaced, we would be able to consider failures with it as a claimable issue."
I bought an EGO mower because I hated the maintenance of the gas mower. Gas mowers were hard to start and I needed to drain the gas. But since I have a very small yard, I bought an ego. The cut performance is okay, but it is not as crisp and doesn’t look as manicured as a gas mower of a higher end gas mower.
I purchased my own and I am glad I have because EGO HAS WORKED WONDERS- it does far better than any heavy duty gas powered mower
I would never listen to this guy EVER
Thanks for the review. Bought our ego lawn mower 3 years ago and have never regretted it. Our lawn is just under an acre and it’s not a problem.
I bought the ego mower in 2017, absolutely 0 regrets. I have added all of the accessories to my collection except the chainsaw.
I cut my Zoysia/Bermuda about 1 1/2” no problems with my battery powered. Love not having to deal with gas.
I went Ego this year, have been very happy. I got the 650 blower, and it is a KICK BUTT unit. Really big fan.
I have a 40 volt self propelled Ryobi mow a 1/4 acre. Going on 3 years and it has worked great. Fits my need perfect.
I can mow my 10,000 sq ft tall fescue lawn almost twice per charge with my EGO mower.
I’ve have a EGO lawnmower and blower for 3yrs now and no problems it’s better than any gas mowers I’ve had in the past
I have a 230,000 square foot lawn and I use the ego riding mower with 6 10 amp batteries. Love it
Loving my 2nd gen 60 volt Greenworks mower!
Doc, if you want more air volume or flow for bagging damp or wet grass, you need the High Lift blade to get the results you're looking for.
Much appreciated.👍
I have the Ego mower, Ego snow-blower and the Ego weedwacker bundle with the blower.
I bought the Ego and have been using it for the last two summers and can’t believe how much I enjoy it and how well it works
It performs really well.
This is why I love your videos. So much detail and explanation to help me figure out what I need to get. Thank you!!
Great video, i just bought my Ego mower last week, still getting used to it BUT i love it!

I purchased one two years ago, I love it.
was your grass wet? I have the older version ego mower for 5 yrs now, never had grass clump unless wet cutting at lowest setting
Just discovered your channel. Thank you for your clear, concise and objective analysis of this electric mower.
Do I want an electric reel mower? YES. Ego, make it happen. Market domination
And the batteries can move from tool to tool. Mower, blower, snoblower etc.
For me, i don't want to deal with the gas and all the maintenance that comes along with a gas mower so going electric was the obvious way to go. I am so glad that i ended up getting an E-go, it was the best decision i could have made.
Best point to point review yet!
I purchased the Toro 60v Lawnmower, Leaf Blower and Trimmer and I absolutely love them 😊
I got the 22' self propelled on sale for $299.
Where?
I found mine on clearance at Home Depot for $279 with the 7.5 battery. Couldn’t pass it up.
Wow huge deal coming with the battery, nice 👍
The extended warranty through Amazon does not cover batteries.
According to Amazon: "Thank you for your question. This protection plan is designed to cover your item for mechanical and electrical failures due to normal use. Replaceable components such as batteries are considered consumable items and are not covered by this plan. However, if the unit has a built-in battery that cannot be user replaced, we would be able to consider failures with it as a claimable issue."
Should you buy an electric mower?
Well gas is approaching $4 in Texas
That's funny because a lot of people with large lawns might disagree. I've seen many videos with people doing an incredible amount of grass.
