I bought the self propelled walk behind lawnmower. The speed switch or regulator stopped working. I called Ego and explained the problem. Since there wasn't an Ego repair outfit nearby they sent me a brand new replacement mower and also paid for the return shipping back to them for the broken one. I got the new mower in a matter of a few days. This was the absolute best customer service I have ever received anyware. Because of this experience I have purchased an Ego blower, riding lawnmower, nexus power station, and another self propelled mower as a gift for the pastor of our church, and a snow blower for my daughter. Our pastor liked the Ego mower so much that he bought a self propelled mower for his dad and a hedge trimmer and chainsaw. There customer service is their best advertisement.
I would advise against Ego. My 7.5 Ah battery died, Ego will not stand behind their product for me. Less than four years old, and I already have a dead $400 battery, and no support from Ego.
Just had one 7. 5 Amp battery start losing run time. Was about 25% less I noticed. Called EGO and they immediately shipped me a new one with the newer fuel guage. Battery was about 2 1/2 years old. The service I've experienced is excellent. Just make sure you register the tool battery and charger when u purchase it.
Saw your video, immediately dug out the receipt and uploaded it... Didn't realize that the batteries and chargers had serial numbers as well. Thank you so much for saving future from a headache
I have a 5.0 battery from 2018 that came w/our mower. It's losing its longevity but it still works. I have two more5.0s(765 leaf blower and pole saw) and two 12s for their self-propelled snow blower. No problems so far. Thanks for posting.
Had the same problem with a 5.0ah fuel gauge battery, i e-mailed the support desk in the UK, they checked the warranty claim and sent me a new battery the next day. Excellent service in my opinion.
So glad I came across your post. Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I called them this morning and within 10 minutes they set up an order to ship me a new battery. The only issue is the batteries are on back order but they expect to receive a shipment within the next couple of weeks. Promised to expedite my shipment as soon they came in. Thanks again for sharing your experience!
If it looks like it's going to drag out too long, you might look into a 3rd party clone battery. I have a couple of those and they do actually seem to work just fine. The warranty is not a good on those, but they're also a fair amount less expensive....so it's a trade-off (or a gamble, haha).
I was EGO's biggest fan until about a year ago. I've never had any trouble with all of the equipment I bought. But their refusal to fix their battery quality control problem has me slowly moving away as I buy new equipment. They are killing their own Golden Goose with their behavior here.
The quick summary is they Suck!! The following would be a similar encounter I had with them back in 2019. I had a brand new Gen-3 7.5ah battery go bad almost 13 months after receiving it in 2021 as a gift from a buddy of mine that knew I had EGO equipment and knew I had went thru hell with them just to get them to replace an in-warranty battery before. I believe I used this battery for as many as 20 times from a full charge until it was down to it's 20% battery level. Now the battery goes to red on a full charge within 2 seconds and and in any of the 3 EGO devices I put it in: the Blower, the Walk-Behind 21" and the String Trimmer. I called EGO' Customer service and explained it all to them. They wanted me to produce a receipt no matter what, which, of course I couldn't since it was a gift and had explained that to them at the beginning. Now what? So the 1st time I went through an in-warranty battery replacement with them they made me take pictures of the battery and all of my EGO products, from every angle and making sure the pics had clear, readable serial numbers in the images, as well as making me turn my house over to find the receipt. What a nightmare. I finally provided them with what they needed, in all of their attempts to shirk their warranty, and finally received a new replacement after about 5 weeks, back in 2019.
It seems like since about 2019 the batteries are hit and miss. I use the stuff commercially, but have been since 2013. The older batteries lasted 3 years or more with commercial use. Now I'm lucky to get more than 2.
@@gandalf6923 it the receipt process that they require. When you buy their products with a battery included in the sale, the receipt does not include any mention of the battery. So you can purchase a $1,000 mower, with a battery in the kit, but there nothing on the receipt about the battery. Terrible system, poor frustrating service, feels like it is being done on purpose.
I've had three returns on the newest generation battery with the energy usage bar - the latest generation battery. The first 5Ah battery (flashed red during use, even though fully charged) within a few months of purchase. Then, about six months later, two more started flashing red during charge and at times during use. This time EGO Australia were slow/not helpful to replace the batteries or even respond. So, my hardware store where I purchased the batteries (and chainsaw/mower/line trimmer) replaced the two batteries from their own stock (the previous generation of batteries are typically better) as well as the CH2100E Standard charger. They know me well there as I run a busy community website that does reviews of equipment at times and promotes local business. My BA2800 battery without the letter T at the end of the model number has run perfectly for 18 months but the latest generation batteries with the T in the model number have all failed. EGO knows about the problems with their batteries and I understand they have replaced the brand of battery internally. However, they are reluctant to let the customer know about the extent of the issues, at least in Australia, that is the case. They actually told my hardware store not to tell the customer about the problems with the batteries... I must say, in years and years of using battery equipment, I've never had a battery fail from Ryobi or Ozito, ever - but three have from EGO.
I agree with these new generation batteries being troublesome. I've only had one, but that one failed after 30 minutes of use. Took it back, and got an old stock battery without the fuel gauge. Flawless. My other two ego batteries are 5 and 4 years old respectively, and they're also flawless.
So do you think ego will update the 3rd gen batteries without publically announcing it? If so it might make it hard for buyers to know which version they're getting.
@@KiranPatel-fk1pg funnily enough, I just got a brand new ego tool. I have a feeling the third generation ego batteries have been updated without customer notice, because I noticed that the charging behavior is different, as is the behavior when you press the button to see battery level. Time will tell how this battery lasts.
@@Smurdle450 Had to track down this video again, just to ask if you had any issues so far with your latest 3rd gen batteries after a few months? I've been wanting to buy more ego stuff but have been waiting out to see how the latest batteries are holding up.
you should never leave ego battery or any battery on a charger when it finished charging ego batteries when charged will drain down to 30% over time as a safe mode
That shouldn’t be the case if they have a decent battery management system and charger. Even the relatively cheap battery charger I have for individual 18650 cells knows to stop charging when the battery is fully charged. I can leave batteries in that charger for months without harm. What kind of “safe mode” requires a LiON battery to be drained down to 30% charge and why? There should be very minimal or no phantom drain on a battery in this type of appliance. That makes no sense to me and I am pretty familiar with battery technology.
from one of the Ego charger's manual: The battery pack will fully charge if left on the charger, but it will not overcharge. If the battery pack remains on the charger for one month or more, it will perform self-maintenance and drop to 30% charge capacity. If this occurs, reinstall the battery pack on the charger to recharge it fully.
Thanks for the video. I had a 5Ah that went dead after 2.5 years and had a similar experience to yours with EGO customer service; a week later I had a new one. I decided to drop the old one off at Lowes for recycling rather than play around with it (even though I've had a far amount of experience building packs from 18650's) just to minimize risk. I plan to be more careful in handling and storage of the new one (not storing at full charge for long intervals, controlling storage temperature between 6 and 80°F, not leaving it on the charger or on equipment when not in use, etc.) But in summary, as of today, at least, they appear to be doing a good job of customer service in contrast to much of what I've read having taken place in the past.
I had the same issue with the same battery April of 2022 and Ego support was amazing, went thru the same steps and processed my warranty for battery. It was my first call and that call alone made me feel confident about their business practices.
I know I'm kind of late to the video, but for the benefit of your viewers... When this happens to me (I have two batteries that have developed this symptom) with the battery indicator facing up, drop the battery from a few inches onto a hard surface. This will jostle the thermal protection switch enough to continue using the battery.
The 3rd gen 7.5 amh batteries I found are no better than my 1st gen 5 amh batteries. That being said I still love my Ego tool kits. For me 3 each 5/7.5 amh is great with the rapid charger. I have had two push mowers, an 18inch chainsaw, hedge trimmer, carbon shaft weed eater, and a blower.
yeah, I have both types mounted on the wall and I typically use the slow charger for that very reason. I will say though that the fast charger does have a nice cooling system designed specifically those batteries so I'd guess that the impact on battery life is probably not a great as one might think. Better safe than sorry though, I guess, right? ;-)
This is August 2024. The mower, battery and charger were purchased May 2022. I just go off the phone with EGO and have a new 7.5 amp hour battery on the way after a thorough on the phone diagnostics by a very friendly technician. There was no wait time and the diagnosis plus creating the case number and shipping status was less than twenty minutes. I was surprised at how many ways they are able to diagnose the battery with different blinking scenarios with the battery in the mower, on the charger and on the bench. She even diagnosed the charger! I’m very happy with the mower and we have a trimmer as well, both have been reliable for us.
Before you do anything place the battery in the fridge for about 15 minutes when your battery is fully charged but won't start your mower. Keep it in the coolest room in the house. It worked for me.
I live in New Zealand. I bought my Ego lawnmower seven years ago, and have added other Ego products since. The mower had a 4 amp battery, which "died" after three - four years. I went to our local agent (we live in a small village) to get a replacement. I left the old battery with them. A day later I saw somewhere - RUclips? A website? a suggestion that dropping the battery on a concrete floor might make it work again. I went back to the shop, got the old battery (they hadn't yet ordered a new one yet) and, in front of the shop assistant, followed that advice. I took it home, inserted it in the charger, and got a whole year's more service out of the battery. Shortly afterwards, I was in another shop in the same chain, pricing new batteries for when the inevitable happened ( NZ$450 - $750 including better charger), and saw a backpack operated Ego blower, discounted from $800 to $400 including 7.5 amp battery and charger - i.e. way cheaper than just the battery alone. I now use this battery on all my Ego tools, and have done so for two years. I'm about to replace my mower for a Self - propelled model (Ego of course).
EGO replaced one of my 5Ah batteries under warranty. It only charged to two bars. After they sent me a new one, I opened the faulty battery to see what was wrong and found that the cells were unbalanced. I put it aside and one month later it went into storage mode (self discharge to 20%) and rebalanced itself. Now it seems to charge to 100%
I bought numerous EGO products when they first came on the market. I've had most of my 5.0ah batteries go red and into self discharge mode. Of course they were just out of warranty and EGO support was no help. A lot of money to lay out and replacements are ridiculous. I have other Lipo batteries that have lasted over 5 years and probably more. You weren't to far off from the 3 years, keep us posted on the status of your new replacement. Thanks...
I have a mower that's almost 20 years old. It just died the other day, when my dad decided he's had enough of the carburetor, and decided to drill a hole? I haven't the slightest idea as to why, but he did. LOL. 18 dollars for parts at amazon, no need to wait 8 days. just take apart some screw and stick it back in. I will miss the days of gasoline.
Take the older slower charger you have and another fully charged battery and connect the positive terminals to the positive terminals and same for each battery together. Let stand like 10-20 minutes. Then place bad battery back into slow charger. It's a way to jump start old battery. Good luck. Did mine in 2015 and still use today.
Hi , I have been researching cordless mowers here in the uk for 6 months on every brand going. I eventually filtered this down to the EGO. I was very impressed with the latest EGO Mower model 2135SP . Fastward to this week , I was just about to order my new mower, and one last check on youtube and found that in last 2/3 yrs there had been a battery problem. However, after seeing this video, you have certainly given me peace of mind to now purchase my mower. I will make sure this comes with the 3rd Gen battery. Thanks Guys for this video. Kind regards Dan uk
yep, in hindsight my 7.5 ah starting failing year two. It was intermittent, and mostly happened when using mower. It took a while to determine if it was the mower or the battery, warranty expired, and they won't budge. Ace is selling the batteries for $400, and they have had them on back order for months. Ego is not providing batteries for existing customers, but yet they keep selling new mowers with them. No care for the existing customers. I'm getting rid of my blower, trimmer, and mower. Never again. Going back to gas
Yeah, I think as long as you take care to register your equipment with them properly, you'll be fine. I suspect a lot of people don't bother to take that step and that's where they have problems.
Love the concept...hate the batteries! Two years in, started having charging and run time issues...now in my third season and with two batteries I am barely able to finish my 3500sf yard and it seems to be getting worse. So now at a crossroad...do I spend lavishly on replacement batteries, switch to another brand, or revert back to gas.
Same thing here. EGO customer service is great. I did spray the battery with contact cleaner when I had the Red Light of Doom, and this actually worked for a little while, but it was short lived. When I got my replacement battery, I took the defective one to my local dump / transfer station, where they disposed of it for free.
My experience has been very positive as well. It says right in the owner's manual, and a seperate flyer in the baggy, to register your products immediately. I did and I am glad as my battery came within 3 days, no headaches, no problems. I have seen other YT channels say to drop your battery on its front panel from about a foot high. Apparently this solves lits of issues for some reason!
An A+ support rating would include root cause explanation of their product failure as well as solution to avoid recurrence. What EGO should not do is simply swap batteries in HOPE and UNTIL they survive warranty. Did EGO provide root cause explanation or just another battery that may also fail?
My 5AH battery (Gen 1 or 2?) failed after 2.5 years. Replacement G3 sent, and it lasted 9 months. When I called, I was told the 3 year warranty was still based on the original purchase, so essentially the replacement battery had a six month warranty. Bottom line: If you're OK with the idea of replacing a battery for $300 (5AH) every three years, you can be happy with EGO yard tools. I don't know I am OK with that.
Recently we dealt with EGO customer support and their repair facility in Vancouver, WA, and had an excellent experience. EGO replaced the older, in warranty product with a new, in the carton product.
Sir; Did you ever get a chance to do a video about checking the malfunction of the dead EGO battery? I didn't see one on your main page. Thanks in advance, Randy
I had nearly the exact same issue with my 7.5 ah battery as you. My battery was 6 months old to me but 18 months from manufacture. I was just trying to charge it for the 6th time since buying the mower in the spring. I called their toll free number and I don't know how long I was on hold before deciding to try the call me back option but I waited over an hour for the call. Once I got the call, the lady from EGO was very quick to tell me how sorry she was and that this shouldn't be and she just needed to hurry and send me another battery. They didn't ask for me to send mine back and I got the new one in about 2 weeks.
When I bought my mower and batteries etc. five years ago, I got a damaged charger. Called them up, sent a picture and they had a new one in my hands within days. No issues with their customer support at all. Prob one of the best I've ever dealt with tbh.
I keep lawn equipment for 20 years. The failure rate of these batteries and the likelihood of reasonably priced replacements make this a non starter for me.
Batteries prior to gen 3 had a TO-252 power transistor that would occasionally fail. I’ve repaired these for friends, and while it’s not a difficult repair of course that’s not a reasonable expectation for their customers. My understanding is this has been corrected in gen 3. I have one old 2.5AH battery (2017) and three 3rd gen batteries (2020-2022) 2.5AH-5AH-7.5AH. I use them regularly & have never had a problem with any of them.
I had similar problems first the charger,no problems with customer service. They sent new charger no problem. Now for the battery had same problem red light. I have two batteries. If you are charging back to back batteries eventually you will have a problem. Wait for about an hour maybe less but wait before charging another battery. That should work. I had no problems after doing that. I satisfied. Thanks EGO.
I bought my ego lawnmower back in 2017. It’s still running good, the battery used to be able to cut both the front and back but it’s getting where I can only cut one yard at a time. My next lawnmower will be gas. But I love the rest of my ego stuff like the weed eater, trimmer, chainsaw, bush trimmer and blower.
So you've had your mower for six years. I'd bet it has saved enough in gas and maintenance during that time to pay for a new battery. My electric riding mower saved enough in 54 months to pay for new batteries ($660) which I replaced at 58 month afternit had saved $715. How much gas and oil would a gas mower use in six years? Most people don't know because they don't keep track, but bellyache about the cost of a battery.
I have a number of EGO tools. I've had two battery failures (a 2.5ah and 5.0ah of the original generation). Unfortunately, I was lazy and never registered my products for the warranty so I was out of luck there. I ended up buying some knock-off batteries on Amazon that were about half of the cost of EGO products for the same size. And I haven't lost another battery since. I've got a mixture of OEM batteries that came with some of my tools and a few of the knock-offs in 5.0ah/7.5ah/9.0ah. Apparently, you can repair these things as well. At some point, I may try to repair the dead 5.0ah unit with parts scavenged from the other dead battery or vice versa. Hopefully, their latest generation of batteries are better, but there are now aftermarket alternatives as well.
I am a Ryobi owner and have dealt with numerous battery failures in their 18v packs. The 40v packs are more robust it seems. Many times the BMS shuts off after draining a low battery and I have to take it apart and charge up the pack manually. I too have gone with after market Ryobi type batteries and have not had one of them fail. I can’t be sure if it is the factory or just different components that make the difference. I am watching videos for battery failures as I consider what line to go with next. Whoever said battery tools were maintenance free? Haha. Thanks for the video.
@@brentjohnson6654 I have a number of Ryobi tools (just not for yard work) and have many of the OnePlus 18V batteries. I've never had one fail (in the 5 or 6 years I've had the tools). If they start to fail on me, I'd probably use that as an opportunity to look at a different ecosystem like Milwaukee.
I had a very similar experience at first. But the warranty replacement batteries lasted less than a year. I had 2 since I purchased 2 tools and the batteries failed at about the same time. One of the replacement batteries lasted less than 8 months, the other lasted about 10 months. Just enough time to get past the warranty period. New batteries are over $150 each. I could buy new tools cheaper. Probably gas tools this time because they are clearly better for the environment since they last longer and don't require toxic Lithium to be mined with fossil fuels and then left in a landfill to contaminate the ground water. It is my opinion that these tools are both a poor choice for performance and longevity but also a poor choice for "going green". I would strongly advice someone to avoid these products.
Come on man. I've got 26,000 miles on one ebike battery pack. You're telling me that those mile accomplished with ICE internal combustion would be more virtuous than the the lithium I "consumed" (the battery is STILL operational). That's flat wrong. Electric everything is coming.
Wish I had the same experience. My battery failed a few weeks after 3 years was up. I haven’t even mowed in 3 weeks because of a drought. I have 2x 2.5Ah batteries that are over 5 years old and get more use than the 7.5 that just failed🤬. I got a “sorry but beyond warranty”. And I know that’s the way it goes but to have it fail RIGHT after it expires just irritates me.
I have just had an identical experience. New 7.5ah batteries as going for about $380 on Amazon. It is crazy there is no repair service or coupon offer. Nope sorry warranty expired. No longer a Ego fan.
Problem is if you have a battery that’s out of warranty but hasn’t been used that much they will not replace it. They have been overly strict system that does not permit them to evaluate the situation and make a judgment
The EGO batteries in Australia are just too expensive. $350 for one 5Ah battery. I can buy three to four Ozito batteries (they have different batteries at the same power) in Australia for that price and have never had a failure from Ozito batteries in years. Three of my EGO batteries failed and EGO Australia have poor customer service.
I had my snowblower go bad in my third year and called to get a circuit board that I had diagnosed and was told buy customer support that my snowblower was still under warranty and was sent a new one.
Have 1 acre, love the EGO, but the products are right on with the warranty. Battery warranty 3 yrs; it stops at 3 yrs. Mower warranty 5 yrs; mine started overheating at that point. Currently in the market for a gas mower but still don't want the gas engine hassle, so I'll probably go get another EGO...
My Toro Gas mower wore out in less then 5 years, my Honda mower was pretty much shot at 5 years... Unless you buy Commercial, or have a tiny yard, gas mowers just down last..and the Gas, the oil, the stabilizer, YUK......
@@dm285 I wonder if the problem is the 56v battery where as most other manufacturers use 36v. The ego has more cells to possibly fail, more complicated to balance as well, maybe more difficult to cool as well. I've got a 2017 husqvarna battery still going strong and it's done alot of work.
That's nutty, I believe in right to repair our OWN products. When mine fails, I'll make sure to put $50 worth of high end 18650 cells. I'm sure it will work great after that.
You should never leave a battery in the charger plugged in indefinitely after the battery is fully charged. The older batteries do not have a self maintenance function that automatically discharges a battery after a month to make sure it is not stored long term at 100 percent which will cause the cells to degrade prematurely.
Absolutely, Lithium Ion should never be kept 100% when stored, for longevity it's usually recommended to store b/w 40-80% and topped off night/morning before use.
When I bought my first Ego five years ago, I researched Li Ion batteries. The studies I found indicated the battery ought to outlive me. After four years my first battery (same as your old battery) was down to about 25% of its original capacity. It would only run for 10-15 minutes. That’s when I discovered the battery warranty was only three years… 😭 I sold the old mower to someone with a tiny lawn (so he didn’t care about the short run time) and got the new select cut model. Hoping this battery lasts a lot longer!
@@garyfritz4709 thanks for the reply. I really want to get one, but all these bad reviews with battery issues is really making me think twice. I hope for nothing but years without issues for you 👊
Other than the short-lived battery, I love my Ego, and I’ve expanded my Ego stable to include a leaf blower and string trimmer. I’ve had battery powered lawnmowers for 30 years, and the Ego is the best I’ve found.
I like the Ego lineup but ask just experienced the death of my first battery which is 2.5yrs since purchase. Far too short IMHO regardless of replacement. Part of the idea of going electric is environmental however I have concerns over what happens with all these old batteries. Not all of it is recyclable. I will add I was thinking about buying their chainsaw but now have definitely decided against that.
I just bought their battery operated zero turn mower. First time I tried it the temperature outside was 92 degrees and the humidity was Tennessee terrible making it seem like 102 degrees. Within 35 mins I was having problems with the blades turning off and a red blinking light between my feet and the word OVERLOAD flashing on display. On that day I had occasion to speak with customer service multiple times (three). When they indicated I'd be on hold for more than 15 minutes on two of the calls I left my number and they called me back. They were very kind and as helpful as they could be and by the 3rd call that went through without a call back they figured it was too hot outside for the batteries to work properly. They suggested I wait a couple hours until in cooled off outside, raise the deck a bit, then try again. I did as I was instructed, and my new riding mower started working like a champ. I also advised them that Lowe's sold me the mower with only one Safety Key in the box. They said they'd send me another one right away. A+ from me. Now, we will see how this mower holds up after many mows. Fingers crossed, these babies are not cheap.
I wish I could have read the owners manual before buying. The battery started acting up (over-heating) after 20 minutes of mowing. Yellow flashing light and shutdown. I called the "800" number and spoke to a CSR. I replied to the email as he requested but have not hear back. Crossing fingers for a positive result. If I get a new battery, I might try the drop thing on the old battery other messages have discussed.
Don't lose your recept! I lost mine and I have been on the phone with EGO and LOWS all afternoon. They will warranty the blower without a receipt but not the battery! This is poppycock because there is a date when my battery was made on it. My battery is less than a year old!
Yeah now THAT is a bunch of crap! Fortunately, I registered my tools and batts when I bought them and uploaded a copy of my receipt. But if the Battery MFG date is under the warranty period, they definitely should honor that!
Had this exact same issue with a 2yo 7.5 amp battery. Called EGO a first time and the agent on the phone made me do some troubleshooting and concluded with a battery issue. She then opened a case for replacement under warranty. This occured beginning of month of may. Having no news for several weeks (and needed to lawn) I called them back numerous times, with same no news pattern afterwards. I had to buy an EGO blower and use its 5 Amp battery to go through the summer.. In mid August, I received an e-mail survey for EGO customer satisfaction. I explained again my story with the case number and obviously did a bad rating. Finally in end of August, I received a call that a new battery was on the way. So unfortunately I will give EGO a C as for their after sale and support. If I would not have bought a blower and use its battery, I would not have be able to cut my lawn. I’m not sure that I will invest with EGO in the future.
All of my batteries are dying at the 3 year mark. I got one replaced with no issue from Customer service due to it being still under warranty. Seems like the batteries are the major issue with EGO.
I had a similar experience with EGO tech support. I bought a new EGO lawn power with a 7.5 battery. Out of the box the battery was dead. I called and opted for the call back feature. I was called back 4 minute later. I talked to a rep, we troubleshoot, she determined it was the battery and sent me a new one.
Mist lipo batteries are pretty sensitive to how they are stored. And how they are charged. In the rc world its pretty common knowledge to never store a battery fully charged. Actually most chargers come with a storage option which charges it to around 80%. 100% before storage is not good. Also it will drain half of that 80% within a month. Its good practice to put a full cycle through it then charge to 80% again fir storage. Also usually the faster u charge it the worse it is for it. The stock charger is actually the better option if u can bear longer charge times. And u seem to leave it plugged in for long periods? I can’t imagine that is good for a battery. Unless the charger has some sort of smart charge/discharge cycle and doesnt store it at full charge
Yeah, these are all great practices, for sure. I do (now) tend to use the slower charger by default, rather than the rapid charger, just out of an abundance of caution more than anything. But I will say the rapid charger does have an intelligent charge/discharge BMS so leaving it on the charger is not considered a problem. Also, it has a very active cooling system to pump airflow through the cells during charging to dissipate heat quickly, so I suspect EOG's rapid charger is not a big a concern for reducing battery life as people might think. That said, as expensive as batteries are, I'm still going to play it safe, haha! I also now bring my batteries inside for the winter so they don't get subjected to frequent freeze/thaw conditions. Not sure how much that helps, but again...better safe than sorry.
I just bought the 2405 kit. Here's my impression of the battery situation. There are 3 different chargers and 3 generations of batteries all with different circuitry. Add in the different usage and different procedures of care and maintenance by different users. I don't think even Ego has any clue about how to definitively troubleshoot/fix these battery issues. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. Good luck everybody. We'll need it.😅
I had exact same problem with a 2.5ah 1st gen battery. I solved it by sliding it in the charger till the green, orange, red lights stopped, then removed it. Did this several times then it started to charge, been ok since. Try this with your original battery and it may spring back into life. I think there was insufficient charge left to start a charge .
You MUST register your Tools and provide a proof of purchase. If you register & include a receipt your Golden. They will replace your battery. But if you don’t your DONE
Did you try holding the button down? I had the red light yesterday, the battery would charge it would just blink green and the go-to red. I held the button down for a few seconds, the red light went off and then when I put it on the charger it charged fine.
I WISH the resolution of this battery issue was that simple, but no such luck. I've tried virtually every suggestion that's been made and...no dice. Pretty sure it's got a bad cell and the only fix would be to tear it apart and replace that cell and rebalance the charge across all the cells. Luckily, this remains the only issue I've had in the approx 3 years I've had the system.
I have had issues with their battery. They did send a replacement which was a good thing. But then the replacement went bad and low and behold replaced batteries are NOT covered under warranty.
I bought several tools from EGO, I have 3 batteries from them and all of them failed between 2-3 years. I love their tools, but batteries keep failing left and right.
Another tip, if the battery is stored for more than three months, charge it to ensure the battery does not drained down completely via the battery management system, this tip is for the older batteries without the new incremental fuel gauge. If you forget to charge it and it drains down fully it will kill the battery, since the older batteries do not self hibernate like the new batteries. I still have 12 batteries with the old fuel gauge that are usable, they have lost some capacity after over 8 years of seasonal use to clear brush but none have died.
NOTE: Learned this by experience. When they replace something under warranty, the 3-year clock on the new item does not commence upon receipt/first use. The original 3-year period is all they honor. So . . . if your replacement battery fails it will only be replaced under warranty through the original 3-year period. I found their customer service as user-friendly as described in this video.
Thanks for another recent video which shows the inside look of the 10Ah? 56V EGO battery module. These 28 Samsung 3.7 Volt 25R 18650 Lithium Ion Batteries (2500 mAh each) (when connected together) should only give about 52V and 5000mh (5Ah) capacity. Each battery is label as Samsung INR18650-25R. Two groups of 14 batteries (connected in series) are connected in parallel. Of course these Samsung batteries have lower internal resistances whereby they require no "secret cooling wraparounds" as used in the older EGO battery modules. EGO should have use the slightly larger Samsung INR21700-50S with the spec. of 3.6V 5000mAh 35A. Only then, EGO will be able to use the "10Ah" label. But will these 28 INR21700-50S batteries fit inside the present case? By the way, I was going to order the EGO 2 stages snow blower with 4 10Ah battery modules. Now, I am not sure.
Been waiting 4 weeks for Ego to ship my 7.5Ah battery warranty claim...still nothing after 4 phonecalls, CSRs are helpless to expedite the order. Yes, I feel bad for the CSRs. Ego/Chervon (not Chevron!) is a company whose business model is based on selling Chinese quality at American prices. So I bought a generic Chinese battery for 1/3 the price. Why pay Ego a 300% markup for reselling Chinese crap? When the mower dies I am done with Ego.
Remainder of the original battery's warranty. I just had this issue, and my replacement 7.5ah battery was rejected on warranty claim with Ego since it was only 1.5 years old, but past the original battery's warranty, which is what determines warranty period - escalated this to a 2nd level customer service rep, and they told me there was nothing that could be done to remedy
I had it with Battery's I bought a Honda lawnmower and so far, 6 years and no problems and still starts in one or 2 pulls. When your EGO lasts 6 years let me know.
I've had 2 batteries die 1. First generation and 1 2nd generation. Definitely a concern for the long haul when warranty expires. But EGO replaced both no problem.
I have the smaller EGO battery's and both went dead. I removed the end and there is a plug internal , Unplugged it . Waited a short time re-plugged it and put it back together. Charged and haven't had any problems with my battery's. Guess it reset something??
Well, I'm glad We've kept my Gasoline Yard equipment. We bought a used EGO LM2100SP Mower, was used two seasons. the 7.5 AH Battery only lasts 20 minutes. Also, the Mower's self propelled part is stuck on high which is why they sold us the Mower. The Battery is bad and we don't feel it is worth spending the money for a new 7.5 battery. I think I'll fix the self-propelled section and maybe someone would be more interested. We are sticking with our 2000 Toro Commercial 2-cycle Mower. Runs great and with the 1 gallon gas tank, it runs most of the season on one fill-up. And no batteries to worry about. We don't believe battery technology is good enough yet. We had an electric Vehicle and it was a PITA. We leased it for 2 years and gladly gave it back.
I had the very same problem with the very same battery for the very same mower. I had the throw away the EGO mower since it was falling apart after 3.5 years and I wasn't going to spent $350 for a new battery. Everyone rates EGO the best, but nobody seems to address this issue other than yourself. BTW, the first battery failed and it was covered by warranty, this second one failed also, but out of warranty. I was SOL.
What's really bad, most stores have gravitated AWAY from combustion engine lawn stuff, selling predominatly battery junk. Look for 100% lawn care places. Most are vastly smaller than HD or Lowes, but they sell good stuff amd have experienced, knowledgeable folks.
I guess it's a bad day for batteries: Your clock on the wall seems to have stopped at two minutes 'till midnight (Great Iron Maiden song!!!) Time to change another battery.
Hahah! It's actually a bass drum head with a clock design on it from back when I used to teach drumline for a local high school. And I've no doubt that that song was the inspiration behind the choice on where to position the hands. You're the first to notice!
My first-generation 4ah battery has just failed after eight years. While I'm not happy that it has failed, I can't really complain about the quality. In all that time, the available runtime barely changed at all.
One of my neighbors has a bunch of Ego 56 volt OPE he told me last week that one of his batteries is failing. The stuff is about two years old, maybe third summer.
I bought a EGO blower weed eater combo from Ace Hardware in July and already the battery charger has died. It isnt lighting up at all. Doesnt charge. Battery still has a small charge on it and everything else works. I guess I'll be getting in touch too. I'm disappointed.
I got the same problem with the old batteries, so I replaced it with warranty where the new battery had a fuel gauge. I can still use the old one from time to time.
I'd agree 100% with their services, just had same issue with their blower. I will remain customer if this is their standard/model for customer service.
I also have had problems with their batteries. It is to the point I believe this is their business model is to design batteries that fail just after the warranty expires so you have to pay $200-$500 to replace the battery. I have tons of Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc tools with batteries that last year's and years. WTF????
Had same problem you had. Their customer service replaced battery with same one you received. That replacement battery died within 1.5 years!! The old one started working again though and it's still working. Overall I think they have a big problem with the quality of their batteries, and they're not cheap. Must probably I will switch to another brand. Not a fan of EGO anymore.
Just got off the phone with Ego. They are sending me a replacement. They could not tell me when though. I went and bought a spare from Ace. Out 370.00 bucks. I needed one anyway. I'd like to get the defective one working. Almost same issue as yours.
if you do open the bad battery pack use a volt meter on each cell and check if they all have the same voltage it should be with in ± .05 volts of each other any that are way lower then the rest are most likely dead cells you may be able to replace them just remember if you do try to replace them make sure the new cells are charged to the same voltage as the rest of the cells.
Yeah that's the plan anyway. I had a similar issue with drone battery. At the very least, I can use the failed one for parts if I need to in the future.
Yes good point on same voltage. Also the cells should al be matched in capacity as in aH. It wouldn’t hurt to look at the BMS board and maybe replace it if the new battery is not of similar amp-hour ratings. Just my 2 cents a year after your comment. Hope you are doing well and scuze me for butting in.
Been debating on going ego with some of the lawn equipment. I'm a Milwaukee tool user now but I am interested in some of the larger stuff that ego does like the snow blower and riding mower. The thing that worries me is battery support long term. Mowers last for decades and I don't want it to wind up like my Craftsman or Ryobi tools that no longer support old batteries. That's a hefty chunk of change to lose when buying the larger equipment.
yeah, it's definitely a legit concern. And you'll definitely pay more for these battery tools, so the 'value prop' has nothing to do with cost. I remember the guy at Lowe's telling me "think of all the money you'll save in gas"...HAHAHAHA For me, it's all about the quieter user-experience...no oil changes...no spark plugs...no fuel mixing...no fumbling with extension cords, etc. I'm happy to pay more to ditch those annoyances. But...if you DO have an out-of-warranty battery issue...it IS expensive. So it's a bit of a gamble. As far as continued long-term support for battery tech - I'd be a BIT less concerned about that since there are/will be no shortage of aftermarket options.
I have over a dozen Ryobi 18 volt tools from the '90s (blue/yellow) and they run just fine on the new lithium One+ HP battery packs. My first One+ 18 volt lithium pack lasted 13 years in rotation with 5 others. I also have a bunch of Ryobi's 40 volt OPE tools. I have the 21" Whisper Series snowblower and it is more powerful than the Toro 21" it replaced. I have 7 40 volt packs and 2 rapid chargers. I can run the snowblower for over 4 hours non-stop. The oldest 40 volt battery is only 2 years old, but rotating usage should extend their lifspan also.
@@ReeWrayOutdoors I mean.. you laugh, but realistically you do save a solid amount of money in gas, at least in my scenario. At 18c per kwh (the rate I'm paying now, I know its extremely high I got locked into a bad lease during inflation times) it costs me about $0.006 to charge a 7.5AH battery which gives me roughly 1 hr of cutting time on my Ego mower. The same amount of cut time consumes roughly 1 gallon of gas (at last check about 2.85-3.15$ depending which gas station). In east Texas we have 7-9 months of sunshine, lots of rain, lots of humidity, and fast growing lawns and weeds. Barely a winter at all. In the summer it is very common for people to mow their lawn once a week here. I try to stretch it to twice a month, but suffice to say there's a lot of mowing, weeding, limb cutting, hedge trimming etc to go around down here. We live in former swampland. Using electric tools you are basically guaranteed to pay back the battery dividend on gas savings alone. It is not at all far fetched. Avoiding the oil changes, spark plugs, fuel filters, rusted deck etc are just icing on the cake.
They asked me for video evidence. Mine turned red like the video.
You got lucky
Yeap, my 2.5s have both died, now I only have 1 battery to power everything....no good. I'll be going back to petrol power the way this is going
@@texrgb Can't return under the 3 year warranty?
@@gandalf6923 it the receipt process that they require. When you buy their products with a battery included in the sale, the receipt does not include any mention of the battery. So you can purchase a $1,000 mower, with a battery in the kit, but there nothing on the receipt about the battery. Terrible system, poor frustrating service, feels like it is being done on purpose.
Glad to hear just bought my daughter a new EGO lawnmower. Reason I like gas can fix it alot cheaper.
@@Smurdle450 Interesting, let's hope these are all sorted.
@@Smurdle450 Had to track down this video again, just to ask if you had any issues so far with your latest 3rd gen batteries after a few months? I've been wanting to buy more ego stuff but have been waiting out to see how the latest batteries are holding up.
Today I went through diagnostic test with tech support. Great job EGO. Red eye batteries are being replaced. Thank you EGO.
you should never leave ego battery or any battery on a charger when it finished charging ego batteries when charged will drain down to 30% over time as a safe mode
Yeah, it says right in the manual NOT to leave it on the charger once it's been charged, at least for more then a few hours...
I don't think so. Battery has it's charging protection
It should though I don't understand why it doesn't have battery protection
from one of the Ego charger's manual:
The battery pack will fully charge if left on the charger, but it will not overcharge.
If the battery pack remains on the charger for one month or more, it will perform
self-maintenance and drop to 30% charge capacity. If this occurs, reinstall the
battery pack on the charger to recharge it fully.
Thank you for this review of EGO's customer service. Will make my buying decision much easier.
Excellent, now I know what type of electric mower I should buy,and going to purchase EGO other products, thank you for the video .
I had the same issue with the same battery April of 2022 and Ego support was amazing, went thru the same steps and processed my warranty for battery. It was my first call and that call alone made me feel confident about their business practices.
Did you receive new battery? I called them in April and was promised new battery, but still didn’t receive it.
@@damirka83 I've been waiting 4 weeks...3 phonecalls later they still can't tell me when it will ship!
2024 is an entirely different story.
I know I'm kind of late to the video, but for the benefit of your viewers...
When this happens to me (I have two batteries that have developed this symptom) with the battery indicator facing up, drop the battery from a few inches onto a hard surface. This will jostle the thermal protection switch enough to continue using the battery.
thank you internet friend! worked on the 5th drop :)
@@seanvanr Sweet 👍
@@seanvanr I didn't even think about dropping it multiple times after the first drop didn't work. Worked on number 4 for me. Thanks!
I never use the fast chargers. Slow charging is better for longer battery life.
yeah, I have both types mounted on the wall and I typically use the slow charger for that very reason.
Two yrs ago i did this and it works and until now the battery still working
I just bought an EGO mower, with the battery you showed us. So far I love it. Good to know EGO support is so good.
Yeah, I think as long as you take care to register your equipment with them properly, you'll be fine. I suspect a lot of people don't bother to take that step and that's where they have problems.
My EGO battery lasted almost 8 years. No complaints. Love my EGO lawn mower. Cut grass twice a month from April to October.
And mine ten - it just failed this morning. Pretty amazing really.
@aliensporebomb EGO lawn mowers awesome. No more dealing with smelly noisy gas mowers. And clogged dirty mowers, always stalling out.
Ego customer service reps are friendly, but they have no power. A call to them is like asking your grandmother to replace your truck transmission.
This is such good news. Thank you EGO for doing the right thing.
Any interaction with EGO via phone call they want a credit card BEFORE talking to anyone
I have a gen 3 and I’m experiencing this problem
Yeah, great point. I'm actually posting a new video where I discuss my after-market battery experience (among other things). :)
I've got a 2017 husqvarna battery still going strong and it's done alot of work.
agreed yuk, but good maintenance along with alota luck have to do with the life of a good lawn mower

40v GREENWORKS, 2013 chainsaw, battery still going strong. Greenwork's the best, never ever let me down
When I bought my first Ego five years ago, I researched Li Ion batteries.
How's the new battery, if you've had a chance to run it?
@@oggoblin295 Works fine so far, probably an hour or more but my lawn only takes 45 minutes. The question is how many **years** it lasts.
My mower is not effected by the temperature at all since it's a gas powered mower.
Do you have a tear down with what went wrong. My thought is if it is just a single cell what happens if that happens in a Tesla?
@@ReeWrayOutdoors good info. Thanks
I had the same problem in the Uk. Contacted Ego to report fault . Excellent service and battery being replaced free of cherge,.
We'll need it.😅
I'm selling all of my stuff,l have had three failures in as year!
Mine died just over 3 years. Today, the batteries are about $150, but that's still 1/4-1/3 the price of a new mower.
I am happy to hear that Ego did the right thing.
Would be interested to know if you did take it apart and repair the unit.
I wonder if the new battery is under warranty for another 3 years or just the remainder of the original. Did they tell you?
Remainder of the original battery's warranty. I just had this issue, and my replacement 7.5ah battery was rejected on warranty claim with Ego since it was only 1.5 years old, but past the original battery's warranty, which is what determines warranty period - escalated this to a 2nd level customer service rep, and they told me there was nothing that could be done to remedy
I really want to pull the plug and purchase an EGO mower but the cost of a replacement battery makes me hesitant.
I had same issue with battery, I got a new battery sent to me
The battery seam to over heat all the time
I have the smaller EGO battery's and both went dead. I removed the end and there is a plug internal , Unplugged it . Waited a short time re-plugged it and put it back together. Charged and haven't had any problems with my battery's. Guess it reset something??
Were you able to fix the old battery?
Same thing happened to a friend's 56v 7.5 AH. I think the BMS failed.
I agree with you ..I went through a similar situation and I have to wait until my batteries come in
Did you receive your battery? It’s been over a month since they promised me new battery, still waiting.
