Me and the wife are now hooked. Found your videos last week and now binged most of them together. Usually she doesnt like my youtube watches so this is cool with me!
Happy birthday! And yes, Texas is pretty bad when it comes to abandoned dogs. All the shelters and rescues are full and it’s a huge problem, especially in rural areas where dogs are not always considered family, but more disposable. Trinity is so lucky to have found y’all!
Our municipal shelter here outside Houston opened a new facility with 4x the space and it was full within 3 months of opening. It’s still over capacity with dogs being dumped almost daily. We have 3 now and hubby says no more!
Shelters and rescues are full everywhere! I always adopt rescues, but like most pet parents, I already have 3. Wished I could save more. Thank you for giving Trinity a loving home
I just discovered your channel and I am very impressed with the quality of editing and obviously the excellent content. I spent yesterday binge watching the last two months of content. Looking forward to following your story. 🎉
Such a huge compliment that you would go back and binge our previous videos. 🤗 You may want to stop once you reach "Your broke" though because they get a little more boring before Sept 2023 IMO. 😂 -J
OMG the transformation in Trinity since she found you guys is amazing! Her coat is so shiny and she's so energetic! So proud of you too for claiming her ❤❤❤
Those winds were terrible! 😮 Thanks, Joseph, for literally holding down the fort / RV so I could see Kalyn! ❤ SO thankful you guys survived the winds, and yay for getting closer to Alaska! 🎉
You need to contact RUclipsrs SIMPLE LIVING ALASKA. They live up there and make awesome content. They are also a couple with dogs. You can probably boondock on their property and they can take you on adventures.
Thanks for pointing them out! Going to give them a watch. I'm not good at inviting myself over to strangers homes (esp to someone who has nearly 1M subs 😳) but I bet we'll get some ideas from the videos for sure! -J
Happy Birthday! 🎈 Why are you dairy-free? Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago, really enjoying it. So, you might have already talked about it in an episode I missed.
So there's a long story....here's the short version: We went vegan-ish (Diet...not religion 🙂) from 2020-2023 and when we started that diet Kalyn noticed imediatly that she no longer experienced stomach issues. We figured out that it was the dairy. So when we adopted meat back into our diet this past year, we kept dairy out of our home cooking so that we didn't bring the stomach issues back. -J
New Subscriber here. Started watching your videos on the Sugar Beet harvest and really enjoyed them as we are looking at trying out the harvest this year. Also looking forward to your Alaska trip as that is definitely a bucket list item fro us as well.
I just started watching you 4 and love it. First video I watched you talked about the first two times of you guys doing RUclips and a failure well it is good you did a third timecause you’re killing it now. Enjoy your adventure and maybe someday like next year when I get on the road I will meet you guys. Happy Happy Birthday Joe.. Alkaska is definitely a place I want to go to on my travels. Your videos are awesome.. Have fun🧡🙏🦋
Thank you so much for those encouraging comments! If you don't follow us on IG that's where we are a lot more "Real time" on there so if we're even nearby you'll know! -J
I'm originally from West texas. My family is still out there. I'm now in the western carolinas. I got tired of the heat and the drought. Just imagine what people had to put up with during the days of the dust bowl. Alaska bound? I'm going with y'all. Lol.
We've crossed in before with rabbits with no problem. If I remember right there are zero records needed for them. With a dog they want to have records that they are up to date on their shots but they may or may not ask. Our friends crossed over last year and the dogs (which were clearly in the back seat) were never even a topic that the either sets of border agents brought up. You have to be prepared, but it's up to the border agent as to whether or not they want to take the time do go over the paperwork. -J
I always stop my fuel fills at 1 cent more than even dollar. My checking accounts put the remaining into a "Savings" account so in the end it's even. I like doing 99cents into savings.
After seeing you make the decision to keep Trinity I subscribed to your channel. If you could provide a method as to where I could make a donation for dog food and vet bills I would like to contribute,
We found you guys in our RUclips suggestions a few weeks ago. We subbed and have been watching since, even watching past videos. I have to say we are happy you got new tires! I almost lost control of my car on the highway with a similar leaky tire. We're looking forward to your Alaska trip! 😊
YAY! So glad you've been enjoying our videos and sorry to cause you undue stress. Not that it makes a difference but this leak was TIIIIiiiinnnnyyyy. It seriously took me forever to even locate it with soap and water because when you sprayed the tire it didn't immediately bubble. it took several seconds for a bubble to appear. We would drive for an entire day and see maybe a pound or two lost in pressure. It actually lose the most pressure on cold overnights which made me think it had something to do with the rubber retracting in the cold ever so slightly? But even then...crazy crazy slow. But no worries now! She's all shoed up with Alaska tires! -J
I have been debating a slide toper, and remember what it was like in the wind....ive pretty much decided against the topper... I always brought the slides in as well during bad wind.
Yeah, I think if I were to get a brand new RV I’d go top(er)less. With this one I like the toppers because I’m not convinced the slide gasket seal is perfect so having a limited amount of water getting on the top of the slide is something I appreciate. -J
Did you guys check out Big Truck Big Travels trip to Alaska? They share a lot including a spreadsheet with stops they did and the camp sites. We live on a small road a ways from any town and we see so many abandoned animals dumped by us. Hope you stay safe and healthy.
I live in Edwards County, TX, not in any town. I have had to find homes for several dogs that were dumped out here. Thankfully FB ads have helped me find them homes quickly.
Surviving the 70 mph winds without a slide topper coming off and ruining your roof was impressive….but I am most impressed by Kalyn’s 5 hours of driving by yourself! 😆 - (clearly, Victoria who never drives)
The secret was...pulling in the slide before it was too late. HOWEVER, we didn't get an amazing IG reel out of the ensuing drama (that makes us both laugh every time we see it) and you did. So...not sure who the real winner was. 😂 -J
The shelters here in Ohio are full. Cops cannot even take dogs they find to the shelter. Our dog came from a rescue a couple of years ago. My heart aches for these animals. And there are so many puppy mills which is where our dog came from.
Fun fact that comes to my mind every wind storm in AZ is that before we moved full time in our RV I had a nightmare of blowing over while in an RV, which made no sense when I had it, cause why would I ever be in one!?😏 We fled from Florida to Georgia during a big hurricane in 2017, but still had 70 mph winds, so yeah every shake/rock makes one wonder if this is a good idea, but now we are a few months past 8 yrs! 🤗 Wife workamps 3 days a week at a park we came to just before 2020, and is why we did pretty well during the nearly yr and a half we didn't have income other than someone saying they felt led to give us something we never asked for, and the last couple of yrs we've worked 8-9 weeks a year at a mall taking Santa and Bunny pictures to cover our $200 a month in bills we have, and living expenses of gas, food, and this year $4,100 tires for the house, cause ours are 8 yrs old, and we couldn't go anywhere else until we got new ones, and we put on $400ish tires on the SUV! Now we must find a good solar kit, and then we can possibly move on!(?) Funny thing is we had more $ in the bank the beginning of this year than we ever had with a full time yearly job for over 16 yrs! People asked us how we were going to get $ when we started over 8 yrs ago, and we said God will take care of us, and we have been taught by Him since then that those weren't empty words!! Sure has been a stress reduction lifestyle from working 9-5 just to have a bunch of stuff that ends up owning you instead of you owning it!
God has yet to let us down. And what I’ve discovered is when I think He’s letting us down, He just has better plans that I haven’t been made privy to yet. 😂 -J
@@OpenRoading I've been running the sound for the church in our park, and my parents, for the last couple of years, have come here to lead the music. (They've full timed for over 14 yrs now in the same RV!) First of 2021, I believe it was, our pastor died, and another guy took over as pastor, who got stomach cancer just before he came back this past fall, and there's some micromanaging going on by some that desire controlling everything, which right now has been a great time for them to get away with it. So the spirit of the church isn't what it was, but also the park itself is feeling colder, as people in a 55+ park disappear, and change about like working fast food! We feel like our time here is drawing to a close, but we don't know when, or where we are to go, but when we started this 8+ yrs ago it was always with an end in mind of being with like-minded people in a place in the West "circling the wagons," so to speak, living together growing food, and such, so I'm still expecting to understand it better by and by, and Him leading us to the person with the answer of where to go!😉 Till then He'll take us to another stop over! Started 2015, but instead of like most, who get to travel, we went straight to FL for nearly 3 yrs, and then AZ for around 5 yrs, but both had Devine purpose we discovered as we've been there! (I want to see the world, but we keep running out of money, so we stay awhile working to make money, amongst other issues, which have been mostly for my wife while here, like her totaling our car during the second time she drove it after we got here, (she spent 4 days in the hospital, but the first time she drove here she got a $275 speeding ticket taking back a Redbox movie .9 miles away!🙄 I do ALL the driving outside of the park!) then they found a growth that led to a hysterectomy, and cataract surgery, since we've been here! Even that was a blessing, cause our Cavalier became an Escape, which is why our pastor, who died, was able to tell us he wanted us to start taking clothes, and stuff out to the homeless, so our car has been totally full for 3+ yrs, but even that door seems to be closing as we can't find people anymore, cause they are being chased off!😢 Yep, the tides a changing, which is OK, but it has been comfortable sitting here, plus I actually hate driving this cracker box on wheels!😏😖 Living in, great, driving 😝😂 We don't do enough to keep a channel going, but some of our life in an RV should have been filmed for more of a movie! Like when we came back to the park, where we were going to be Camp Host, after that hurricane ended, (we were gone a week, cause our AC pulley froze breaking our fan belt, and it took a few belts before we realized a good inch or so was missing! Much longer story.) we'll a tree was halfway across the road, so I decided to go around it instead of stopping and moving it, so I slid our RV into a ditch, and durn near rolled it over, but fortunately a local had a big farm tractor, and threw a chain under my front, and I punched the fuel while turning hard right, as he pulled to climb out of the wet sand! At the time we were so messed up we didn't even think to take a picture much less film it! It makes one nervous to climb up from the driver's seat to open the door and then jump down to the ground, but then having to climb back in hoping not to tip it over!😳 First time dumping into a tote I learned why that little capped breather hole has to be uncapped when filling! Ol Faithful mean anything? Last time I wore those shoes!🤢💩 Fun times at RV High!!
Sorry you had to see that pet in the road. It's so sad that people can take something into their care and act like they loved it and then turn around and leave it on the side of the road because they have something they think is more important than caring for a furry family member
Yeah, we don't understand it. This year for us has either been different from the past or we are just noticing it more but there seem to be abandoned dogs everywhere. 😥 -J
Been enjoying the last few videos. I have a weakness for strays as well. Please put this toward the Alaska fund. I am hoping you two make it up here to my home state. Now you have a friend in Alaska. 😊
Oh thank you so much! We’re super excited that we are this far along in our goal and every dollar is helping! Thank you for being so generous. We are honestly amazed every time we see a superthanks notification that people would want to give encouragement like that to a couple of strangers on the internet! Thank you again and maybe we’ll see you this summer! -J
Happy 29th birthday 🎉 Joseph😜. Congratulations on your Alaska fund increase!! My wife and I were happy to see Cody still with you. Trinity seems to be coming along nicely 😊
We were amazed how well Trinity did with the RV shaking from the wind! Thanks for the birthday wishes! Gonna give this year 29 one more shot before moving on... 🤣 -J
Kalyn got me a pink mask as a joke for Christmas 😂 (don’t worry - she got me very non-joke gifts as well... I say that some people on here think she’s a terrible human because we made a bet and I lost and had to risk my life eating a..,banana muffin. #OhTheHorror 😂) Anyway - where was I, OH the mask! So I do want to try a mask sometime - probably in alsaks. As to sounds I’m super weird about that. I can sleep through most anything so at the moment I don’t need them, but I’m actually worried I would sleep through something important (smoke detector) if I had ear plugs in…so I’m not gonna give those ones a try. -J
I’m new to your channel I watched a few videos. I enjoy all your tips and information and adventures. I was thinking of you guys during your windstorm like Matt Damon on the Martian stuck inside the during the HAB during the storm. You’re Alaska trip sounds awesome you positive from Southern California
Happy belated birthday 🎂! I'm glad yall made it through the wind and made it through the cold weather as well! Being we are seeing this video! The new shoes on the truck look awesome 👌! Looking forward to your next video, Alaska, here yall come super exciting!
You will be super happy with the BF Goodrich AT tires. My favorite. I have gotten 60,000 out of them. Just be sure to use the correct air pressure and rotate them! Best in snow too!
Happy Birthday. As for the number of abandon dogs, you would be surprised to know a lot of them are not dumped. But are in fact run away’s, that got out of someone’s yard due to either inadequate fencing or negligence. I cannot tell you the % that are abandonments, dumped dogs and run aways. What I can tell you is that Texas has a huge problem with puppy mill’s, that contributes to the problem because of mills dumping dogs for whatever reason. And people getting a dog from a puppy mill, or disreputable breeder that they have an extremely hard time training so they dump it often because they don’t have the patience or money to spend on getting basic training.
I'd agree with you on the runnaways except we live in an age where you can easily throw a $10 tag on a collar or if you have a little more disposable income get your pet microchipped. One of the oil workers was said, and this has stuck with me, that there is a cultural problem when it comes to domestic animals in certain areas. Dogs are disposable rather than cared for. Beyond the dumping of animals when the become less fun or aren't taking to training, this speaks to the lack of care put into even simple safeguards should your dog run away. When we adopted Trinity the very first thing we did was get a tag with our phone number on it and made sure it was very secure. As soon as we can we plan on getting her chipped and may even go so far as to get an apple air tag collar since we move so often. To me, having the dog identifiable as our is the most basic form of saying "This dog is part of our family and we want to protect her." While I don't have a solution to the problem, I am 100% against puppy mills and I would think they are actually one of the biggest contributors to said cultural problem since a puppy mill treats dogs as commodities and female dogs as factories. (a note to anyone getting angry at me while reading this - I am not saying all texans hate dogs. I'm also not saying other states don't have issues with stray dogs. But you cannot have all your dog shelters full to overflowing and stray dogs roaming the streets and not think that something is going wrong when it comes to domestic animal care as a whole.) -J
Your wondering about all the abandoned dogs in Texas? It's no mystery why. There are numerous abandoned and dead pets ,cats dogs, from the Darien Gap to Texas where the illegals bring their pets and then can't deal with them so they get abandoned. Many get abandoned just as they cross the border and dump the now unwanted pets in Texas. Trinity is one of the fortunate...so glad to see you have kept her. God bless,be free!
While it’s fun to blame everything on a single issue, this would only explain full shelters within range of the border. An earlier commenter mentioned that a Huston shelter tripled its capacity and was full within a matter of 9 weeks. I think what you mentioned contributes - but I think it’s not the only thing. Just my observation. -J
I used to go through that area daily hauling propane and butane. I live in the mountains about a 2.5 hour dirt road drive north of dell city. Can see Guadalupe peak up the trail from my cabin. If it was summer yall would have to bring your bike up and see the southern tip of the rockies. It has been my little paradise from the desert since moving back from alaska in the 80s. We share the same last name, my Grandad always told me we had it because we almost never ventured into town, so people thought it was a big deal when our family was cumming to town.lol. im sure he was being funny, but i lived up to it. I go every 3 months or so at most.
I'm sure we have a distant relative somewhere! We spell ours Comings - BUT we have cummings and comyn in our mostly Scottish family tree. Every 3 months to town sounds amazing! 🤩 -J
Guys I know the feeling because I live full time in a RV in the southern California desert and I hate especially the Santa Anna winds glad you are doing well
I need to visit Texas again soon. Such a beautiful place and so many different landscapes and things to see and do. A few years ago, we attended a huge rodeo in Arlington. We had a blast. Love your channels, videos, instagram, and newsletters! Wishing y'all continued success. 🥰
Ann! Thank you so much! On my computer it looks like you have a "Top Commenter" badge and no truer badge has ever been awarded by youtube! 😁 Thank you so much for your encouragement every single week. -J&K
Haha! NOoooo!!! We hope we can meet you and enjoy some time with you this next winter when we get back to your home state. We promise to make the time. -J
Thank you so so much for saying that you see value from this content in such a tangible way. We never EVER expect people to financially support the channel, but when people like you are so generous it really helps us believe that what we are putting out into the world people are truly enjoying. Again, thank you so so much and we hope you continue to enjoy the channel! -J
I recently subscribed to your channel and am still catching up on older episodes. You guys should buy and electric heater and use it instead of your propane whenever you have electric hookups. At campgrounds you have already paid for the electricity. I also noticed the massive 20kw generator in the background at your gate guarding site.
@@marty6055 No worries! Yeah - it was nice at this gig to have the fridge and most of our heat provided by the generator. We still have a propane on demand hot water heater and had to turn on the propane heat when we got super cold - but that was it for propane usage during this particular gig! -J
Awe... Thank you so much. That is so so so incredibly generous of you. We're heading to town soon and hoping to get her a more proper bed over the pile of blankets she currently has stolen from us. 🤣 -J
The wind was crazy! I'm scared in the wind in sticks/brick, can't imagine how y'all felt. Trinity seems to be settling in nicely! I don't understand the dumping of animals, it hurts my heart.❤️🐾
After all the towing and driving rough roads it would be a good idea to inspect your suspension and get an alignment on your truck to help conserve those nice new tires.
Thank you so much for your generosity...AGAIN! 🥹 It was a fantastic birthday right up until the wind. 😂 As to being in Alaska right now....stay warm! -J
He's still hanging in there. He got diagnosed with a cancer back in November but he keeps hopping around the RV and enjoying life. He just takes meds every day. We didn't know if he would make it this long but we are glad he's still enjoying a happy life. -J
Another amazing video! I can understand the anxiety about those high winds! When we’ve gotten 70 mph gusts in the past few FL hurricanes, I cannot sleep or focus on a task for long. It’s rough. 😩 Glad you all stayed safe and that Kalyn, you were able to make that trip to spend time with your friend! 🙌🙌 And Joseph wins Husband of the Year Award for that bike to the end of the bumpy road. ❤️ P.S. my favorite app for tracking wind speeds and storms is the Windy app. It’s a free one. But the swirls are so aesthetically pleasing, it somehow makes the storms less scary. I think you’d both like it!
Thanks so much for the app recommendation Lauren! I will check that out. The wind graph on weather underground has been my go-to but aesthetically pleasing (and even easy to use) doesn't describe the experience all that well. Looking forward to seeing ya'll in Florida next winter! -J
Loved seeing you get the Milepost! I have my Mama and Daddy's 1997 Milepost from their trip back then. They took their truck camper from NC to AK and were gone 8 weeks and LOVED it! When will you probably enter Canada? How long do you plan for your whole trip be from entering Canada to exiting Canada?
NC to Alaska and back in 8 weeks?! That's an impressive time table! So all our travel plans are still very much in the preliminary stages but at the moment we'll be hitting up Canada early to mid may and getting to Alaska early to mid June. A lot of this will depend on what the weather looks like for this year since we really don't want to get snowed in anywhere. 🙂 -J
I’m in east Texas and the animal problem is so bad. Dogs run loose and feral cats everywhere. I am caring for my part of the hood and am feeding 16 cats. I am trying to neuter them all before spring. It’s the only thing you can do. I’ve done 7 so far. I am enjoying your channel so much. I had a cabin and camper out in west texas and the wind can be unreal! Imagine that wind along with rain and hail! Now that will kick your butt. 😂
This unit is amazing for extra heat. Lixada Outdoor Heater, Outdoor Portable Gases Heater Cover. I use it in my fifth wheel when needing a little extra heat 😊
@@OpenRoading I get it. I live in northern Idaho and it got below zero this winter and that little thing helped so much!! (BTW… Thanks for replying. You guys are so much fun to watch. I love how real you both are 🙂) Happy travels. I hope to one day be doing what you guys are doing.
Oh man. I can't imagine doing below zero in this rig!! If you watch tomorrows video you'll see that that there are huge sections underneath with ZERO insulation! 😂@@carletterice2167
@@OpenRoading I did the whole winter without insulation around the bottom. It’s doable but it definitely took me both electric and propane to keep it warm enough. About $200/month between the two heat sources on average. 😬
Surprising that RVers don't do what marinas do. When boats are stored on land, they are unstable in high winds. So marinas will take 2-3" high strength tow webbing, run it over the hull and deck (from side to side) and then tie the ends down to ground screws set out several yards from your boat. The boat can't tip over! Now, RVers complain about "chafing my roof" but chafing is the same problem on boats. You put down chafing pads, or stainless steel rub strips, and there's no chafe. AND THE RIG CAN'T BLOW OVER. Minimum cost and effort.
Not a bad idea…but we boondock and we are currently sitting on an oil pad. The whole thing is to be mobile. I guess I could drive to a l’m RV park with concrete every time wind was coming (like an RV marina) but I’d almost rather dodge the storm in that case. -J
Unfortunately the leak was on the sidewalk. It was literally a pinhole (I tiny bubble every few seconds with soapy water) BUT - we got new tires a video or two later. -J
Unfortunately it was in the side wall JUST a bit off the tread so a plug wasn't an option. It was however...crazy tiny. Hit it with soap and it would take 4 seconds for a tiny bubble to show. That said...we got them replaced a few days after this video was shot. -J
Yeah. I’ve stayed away from space heaters primarily due to space when not in use. We have such limited storage we try to not carry things that we would only use once or twice a year and could technically live without. Since the only time we can’t use our heat is in strong wind - a space heater would big time fall into that category. -J
Grew up on dirt and tried to convince Kalyn of this. However - after taking the road on my own once, this one has too many deep holes with steep sides to go too fast if you like your vehicle. It’s nice skipping across the washboards until you slam into one of those trenches. 😂 -J
We have traveled the Alcan Hwy about 10 times when we lived in Anchorage, 30 years ago. Vast wilderness. It has changed a lot since those days. You are going to love Alaska. Excited for you. I’m so glad you have Trinity and the bunny. Great company. I traveled alone from GA to Midland TX many times. I loved traveling all over by myself in my younger years. Couldn’t do it now. Love watching you guys. ❤️❤️❤️
I (Joseph) once drove straight from New York to Central Florida in one sitting. Absolutely no way I would even consider trying it now unless it was because of some sort of emergency. 🤣 Oh to be young again. Was so proud of Kalyn for not cancelling her meeting and taking the drive anyway! Thank you so much for the encouragement. Kind comments like yours keep us going more than you know! -J
See you there! Think of us today and tomorrow, we get to do these dang winds all over again. (No video on it this time…who wants to see “This is insane…the remake” 😂) -J
We spent four months in western Canada and Alaska in 2023. The Milepost is a wonderful resource while traveling to and from Alaska. I think you will find that there will be no measurable difference between the '23 and '24 versions. I'd put that $25 or so toward another use. One of the resources we used the most while in Alaska was a roll up map of all the Alaska State Parks that we got for $2 at the visitor center / ranger station in Tok. It will be an awesome experience.
Thanks for the tip! We're going to be traveling with some other people as well so maybe we'll make them buy the 2024 milepost and we'll get the rollup map! 😁 -J
We’re here in a town a ways south of Houston, we moved here from California a few years back and I can’t believe the number of abandoned pups here. My dog Mila was our first save here. She looks a lot like trinity. We were told she’s probably a Catahoula lab mix. I wish we could save all these Texas dogs. Poor babies.
🙂 Quite the storm. Lived in the middle east for a while and could never get use to the storms over there. Glad you are okay. Good luck with your stay in Texas! Where I was born. Remember nothing. Just became a Texan because my dad was attending school in Dallas. Broken hearted when I was a little older and found out I had not been born in California where we lived next. Older now and completely okay with being born in Texas. I know I am a California girl no matter where I was born! Stay safe! ❇❇❇
This made me smile. Kalyn and I were both born and raised in New York....but we consider ourselves to be "from Florida" because that is where we feel like we we're truly venturing out "on our own" for the first time. (Living in an area where there was no other relative). I know that sounds weird to many...and we both love our families dearly, but some how some way...we're from Florida. -J
I know all about those 70 mph winds! I'm from Wyoming, where this is our normal winter . Today was our sustained 70 mph winds. Hang in there and buckle down! So excited to see Trinity has integrated so well into your family, and her and your adorable bunny seem to be friends!
I do like your videos. I started watching your gate guarding videos. I would like to get involved in that. I sent you a message last night behind the mail video to tell you about work camping jobs for Princess Cruise lines. I dont know if you tube deleted or you did but I do have contacts with Princess/Holland America if it was something that would interest you. Im not going to type all that back in because you may have deleted it because you wasnt interested. Let me know if you are and Ill retype it all. I told my wife about Trinity and also what you found at the rest stop and she started crying. She is definately a animal lover. Thank you for what you did for Trinity.
Thanks so much! I just replied to that one, I'm honestly not sure how it snuck through without me seeing it. No deleted though. You have to be an absolute jerk on here for me to delete something. 😂 -J
@dawnwoodruff7513 I'm not very smart on this but hope you get this. I don't know what jobs you would be interested in but Princess/Holland America has lodges all over Alaska. They have all the jobs that go with lodges from housekeeping to maint. Etc.You can google that and should find their web sight. Hey also have busses that shuttle all these guests around. If you would be interested in that you have to have a CDL but if you don't have 1 they will help you get 1 when you go to orientation in Ankorage. You will get an alaska dl if you do that. They start orientation for that Apr 2nd so better get started soon I was supposed to be there Apr 2nd but my wife is very sick and if all goes well she will have major surgery Apr 29th so I had to bow out for this year. Driving pays $22.00 hr plus tips. Also if you stay to the end of contract at the end of Sep you get all kinds of bonuses plus a free cruise anywhere they go. I think I covered it all. My contact was Lizzie 907-748-0135. If you are not interested in driving. I bet she can tell you who can help you with other jobs. She's a great person and very helpful. I owe her 1 since I had to bow out so you can tell her I gave you her number. I'm Kevin Yandell and good luck. Hopefully I'll see you in 2025 when hopefully I get to go
Did your windshield or RV metal get pitted or etched? Be glad it was “only” 70. My apartment window blew in in 100 mph wind. Glass flew across the room and embedded in the kitchen cabinets. Dirt blew into a sugar bowl inside a closed cupboard and throught a bedspread onto my bedsheets.
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 Our Truck windshield is a mess already so hard to know. The back window of the RV took the brunt of it and it still seems to be ok. I think we were spared a lot of the sand blasting because we have the company generator as an initial wind block. All the wind just kinda swirled in between the generator and the RV where if you stepped out from around it you got blasted. -J
A year old Milepost will work pretty well. Make sure you have app for boondocking sites. We'll be in Skagway after the 1st of May for the season, maybe our paths will cross. Safe travels!
There's a good chance we'll be passing through Skagway! Although I've got to be honest...getting to Glacier Bay National Park may be our white whale this season. Unless we take a 6 hour flight from Anchorage we can't seem to find a way to explore the park without spending 2-3K to just get to the nearest town! 😱 Of course we know it's going to be expensive to do everything but yikes. That one caught even me off guard. May have to skip that one this time around. -J
Happy birthday, Joseph! 🎉 Glad y'all got thru the wind! My heart was breaking for Kalyn finding that poor pup. I would have been the same way. On my mind for a long time and in tears. Take care, y'all! I'm looking forward to next week!
Yeah...my heart was breaking for her because she called me in tears and I couldn't do anything to help at the time. 😥 Next week we trade wind for cold! -J
Your Star link was less than 2' from being destroyed. I played it on slow motion and God was definitely looking out for ya. Texas does have a huge problem with abandoned dogs. There's a certain culture that refuses to tie their dogs up. They believe in letting their dogs rom free like they do "back home". Its a hige problem in those communities then the dogs multiple and travel. *It's just a fact.* I live part time in the Texas Hill County with Fire and Rescue and we receive alot of calls from Travelers that their pets either ran off chasing wildlife or ran off being chased by wildlife and never returning. The owners look for them but couldn't find their beloved dog and tearfully had to leave them behind. Only for the dogs like those two to end up being found by other tourists/travelers later. Alive or unalived. The elderly travelers lose or have to leave their small dogs behind because they don't have the ability to hiking to look for them. It's sad all the way around. Alot more are abandoned by unscrupulous dog breeders and unethical people that for some reason think domesticated dogs will revert back to their wolf instincts when needed to survive. Either way they're all terrible people doings terrible things. Always have your dog on a leash when opening the car or RV door. Usually when they bolt out of the car is when they really have to go. Then they grt lost and left. Keep a leash on them at all times. Especially if you're old or can't go chase after them.
We're not full-timers, but we spend several months a year in our RV and high winds are the one thing that freaks me out, so I really sympathize. That was awful for you all. (We lived in Texas for years and all the stray dogs is very upsetting. I'm so sorry you had to see that at your rest stop. It would have really upset me, too.) Trinity is turning out to be a great dog!
I don't consider myself to be an anxious person but wind gets me every dang time. 😱 Trinity is Awesome and is really becoming part of the family so much easier than I ever imagined. -J
That wind was crazy! My wife and I took a trip to Texas last February and we were caught in a windstorm coming out of Big Bend. It was whiteout conditions and the scariest thing I have ever been in. I was driving and couldn't see more than just a few feet in front of me. It was like being in a blizzard, except with dust. We took a trip around Texas and there was wind pretty much everywhere we went off and on. It was the windiest trip I have ever been on, but the worst was that windstorm. I have no idea how high the winds we experienced were but the news said gusts in some areas were up to 90 mph. I learned that Texas in the wintertime can be a very windy place! Glad you survived with no damage!
Wow! Major props to you. I think I would die if I ever had to drive in wind remotely that strong!! I'd be finding the nearest building and parking next to it...but then again...coming from Big Bend I'm guessing buildings were in very short supply... -J
I can’t tell you how much I love your channel ❤🤗 Trinity looks like she is really doing well and has settled in her forever home. Try to stay grounded and don’t blow away, I am out here in Arizona in Quartsite for the winter and we have had some of those really crazy winds here as well. It’s a little unnerving when the trailer is rocking back-and-forth for three days lol.
Yeah, the wind out west takes some getting used to when it fires up!! If you run into Kyle and Michelle down there say hi for us! -J www.youtube.com/@thewanderingshores
Kaylin, send a note & picture to the alumni office asking them to put a note in the alumni newsletter. I guarantee you'll pick up suscribers, and hear from lost friends! You may even get an invite to moochdock with some alumni along the way.
Happy birthday! Wow, did that wind sandblast your RV? I hate wind so I was nervous for you. I felt so bad when Kalyn found that pup. What a sad thing. Ya'll are such a sweet couple
The RV is so old and dirty it's hard to tell. 😂 We're going to be trying to give the RV a bit of a facelift (cleaning, polishing and DIY fix for the striping) so if we got marked up by the sand we'll find it then I'm sure. -J
Remember that many of these millions of new migrants bring dogs along for protection - dogs aren’t allowed at point of apprehension/processing so they are turned loose. Shelters are overflowing. Texas doesn’t need more judgement - doing the best she can in many directions under the circumstances…
First, we love the state of Texas. We love the west. There is a reason we are drawn out here when we spend too much time on the east coast. (great...now someone from the east coast is probably going to come after us). Kalyn was not casting judgement. She was stating something that we have found to be painfully true and other Texas residents have confirmed with us over and over. If we aren't allowed to point that out...then I guess some Texans have thinner skin than I thought. In all our travels we have never seen more abandoned animals than we have in Texas. It's incredibly sad no matter how it is happening. I understand shelters are overflowing, that's literally why we adopted Trinity - but I think we should be able to state what we perceive to be true without being accused of judging. -J
Talking to the 'yote made me laugh. In Austin it was below freezing for over a week during the storm and one night while walking the dog at like 2am I saw two coyotes literally walking in the water in the partially frozen creek behind our house. They seem to have little respect for the weather!
We have 2 - 3 of these guys that prance through every night. I was shocked when between giant gusts he just walked through like it was a normal calm night. 😂 -J
Awesome tires! Glad you got a new set. They got some serious tread on them. The cheesecake that Kalyn made looked fantastic Btw, I pretty much had to get up and eat something after that Lol. You guys eat everything is such small portions tho,, I would eat that in a few seconds
Being from TX, I used to get out on the road and just drive across the state and back, just to clear my head. Those winds & the drought; now you know why there's not many trees in West TX.
Happy Birthday 🎉 Wow I lived in El Paso and saw huge dust storms but never anything like those winds. I was really on the edge of my seat. Trinity is so sweet and a special pup. So sad about the other 😢
Love your journey, thank you for your channel, looking forward to the next one , was said to here about the dog kalyn found over the bank, my wife and I found a dog at the side of a road in New Mexico that had 3 puppies with her we cried for 2 days it was sad , we did all we could do for them
Yeah! I'm very interested to see what she does when we get her to actual grass... 😂 I don't know if she's ever seen lush grass. Thanks for the birthday wishes! -J
Those are some insane winds. Wind is probably our least favorite weather issue that we have to deal with in the RV. While we are a bit late..... Happy Birthday, Joesph. Stay Safe and congrats on 40% benchmark
I bought some of those at a garage sale but always struggled to get them between my tires. I used them for a while but my tires were too close for that specific set. 😭 I'm on the lookout for another set though - just hard to spend so much money on something so simple and small. (Or I'm just cheap) 🤣 -J
Me and the wife are now hooked. Found your videos last week and now binged most of them together. Usually she doesnt like my youtube watches so this is cool with me!
Wow. I don't know if you could leave a comment that makes us happier. 🤗 We'll "see" you both next Friday! -J
Happy birthday! And yes, Texas is pretty bad when it comes to abandoned dogs. All the shelters and rescues are full and it’s a huge problem, especially in rural areas where dogs are not always considered family, but more disposable. Trinity is so lucky to have found y’all!
Thanks for the birthday wishes!!
It really is sad to us just how big of a stray problem they have here. 😞 -J
Our municipal shelter here outside Houston opened a new facility with 4x the space and it was full within 3 months of opening. It’s still over capacity with dogs being dumped almost daily. We have 3 now and hubby says no more!
@@Heatherandthedogs Yeah. There's only so much an individual or family can do to help! 😢
Very sad
So proud of you too for claiming her ❤❤❤
She is pretty awesome. -J
Those winds were terrible! 😮 Thanks, Joseph, for literally holding down the fort / RV so I could see Kalyn! ❤ SO thankful you guys survived the winds, and yay for getting closer to Alaska! 🎉
I was happy that Kalyn could make the trip! -J
Trinity's behavior during the windstorm is admirable. I have two dogs that freak out when there's a rainstorm...and I live in a rainforest.
I think she behaved with less anxiety than yours truly. The slide coming in freaks her out every time though. 😂 -J
In minute 6:58 of your video when you’re walking outside, it looks like there’s a white UFO in the sky!!! And also Happy Birthday!!
Thank you! And we won't assume that it's a reflection off the RV window Kalyn was filming through...it was 1000% a ufo!!! I'm here for it! -J
Happy Birthday! 🎈
Why are you dairy-free? Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago, really enjoying it. So, you might have already talked about it in an episode I missed.
So there's a long story....here's the short version:
We went vegan-ish (Diet...not religion 🙂) from 2020-2023 and when we started that diet Kalyn noticed imediatly that she no longer experienced stomach issues.
Hopefully the beet harvest gave you an idea of what to expect! May I suggest not trying to fix your vehicle in the off hours. 😂 -J
Lol.
See ya there! -J
I have a question about your Alaska trip? Will you have any issues crossing the Canadian border with your animals?
Saving for retirement $0.99 a time! Nice!!! -J
After seeing you make the decision to keep Trinity I subscribed to your channel. If you could provide a method as to where I could make a donation for dog food and vet bills I would like to contribute,
That is so sweet of you and so very generous.

I think we checked Big Truck out a while ago! I'll have to take a look again while we're researching all the things we want to see. -J
I live in Edwards County, TX, not in any town. I have had to find homes for several dogs that were dumped out here. Thankfully FB ads have helped me find them homes quickly.
So awesome that you've done that! -J
Thanks!
Thank you so much! 😊 This type of encouragement amazes me every singe time! -J
Surviving the 70 mph winds without a slide topper coming off and ruining your roof was impressive….but I am most impressed by Kalyn’s 5 hours of driving by yourself! 😆
- (clearly, Victoria who never drives)
The secret was...pulling in the slide before it was too late. HOWEVER, we didn't get an amazing IG reel out of the ensuing drama (that makes us both laugh every time we see it) and you did. So...not sure who the real winner was. 😂 -J
The shelters here in Ohio are full. Cops cannot even take dogs they find to the shelter. Our dog came from a rescue a couple of years ago. My heart aches for these animals. And there are so many puppy mills which is where our dog came from.
It's so so sad. 😭 -J
we had 98 in our backyard in boulder. threw a grill in our yard.
didnt lose a shingle.
Nice! Not all storms come with free stuff. 😂 -J
Fun fact that comes to my mind every wind storm in AZ is that before we moved full time in our RV I had a nightmare of blowing over while in an RV, which made no sense when I had it, cause why would I ever be in one!?😏
We fled from Florida to Georgia during a big hurricane in 2017, but still had 70 mph winds, so yeah every shake/rock makes one wonder if this is a good idea, but now we are a few months past 8 yrs! 🤗
Wife workamps 3 days a week at a park we came to just before 2020, and is why we did pretty well during the nearly yr and a half we didn't have income other than someone saying they felt led to give us something we never asked for, and the last couple of yrs we've worked 8-9 weeks a year at a mall taking Santa and Bunny pictures to cover our $200 a month in bills we have, and living expenses of gas, food, and this year $4,100 tires for the house, cause ours are 8 yrs old, and we couldn't go anywhere else until we got new ones, and we put on $400ish tires on the SUV!
Now we must find a good solar kit, and then we can possibly move on!(?)
Funny thing is we had more $ in the bank the beginning of this year than we ever had with a full time yearly job for over 16 yrs!
@@OpenRoading
I've been running the sound for the church in our park, and my parents, for the last couple of years, have come here to lead the music. (They've full timed for over 14 yrs now in the same RV!)
First of 2021, I believe it was, our pastor died, and another guy took over as pastor, who got stomach cancer just before he came back this past fall, and there's some micromanaging going on by some that desire controlling everything, which right now has been a great time for them to get away with it.
So the spirit of the church isn't what it was, but also the park itself is feeling colder, as people in a 55+ park disappear, and change about like working fast food!
We feel like our time here is drawing to a close, but we don't know when, or where we are to go, but when we started this 8+ yrs ago it was always with an end in mind of being with like-minded people in a place in the West "circling the wagons," so to speak, living together growing food, and such, so I'm still expecting to understand it better by and by, and Him leading us to the person with the answer of where to go!😉
Till then He'll take us to another stop over!
Even that was a blessing, cause our Cavalier became an Escape, which is why our pastor, who died, was able to tell us he wanted us to start taking clothes, and stuff out to the homeless, so our car has been totally full for 3+ yrs, but even that door seems to be closing as we can't find people anymore, cause they are being chased off!😢
Yep, the tides a changing, which is OK, but it has been comfortable sitting here, plus I actually hate driving this cracker box on wheels!😏😖
Living in, great, driving 😝😂
We don't do enough to keep a channel going, but some of our life in an RV should have been filmed for more of a movie!
It makes one nervous to climb up from the driver's seat to open the door and then jump down to the ground, but then having to climb back in hoping not to tip it over!😳
First time dumping into a tote I learned why that little capped breather hole has to be uncapped when filling!
Ol Faithful mean anything?
Last time I wore those shoes!🤢💩
Fun times at RV High!!
If you want a better world, start inside yourself and make it a little bit better for someone else. You two seem nice, see you in a week.
Invest in ear plugs and sleep mask will help when trying to sleep before night shift
Kalyn got me a pink mask as a joke for Christmas 😂 (don’t worry - she got me very non-joke gifts as well... I say that some people on here think she’s a terrible human because we made a bet and I lost and had to risk my life eating a..,banana muffin. #OhTheHorror 😂)
Anyway - where was I, OH the mask! -J
Another great video! Loved it. Trinity is really adapting. I'm so glad that you kept her. ❤️ until next week….
She's doing so so well! We still have a lot to work with her on when we are out for walks but we're making a lot of progress. See you next week! -J
I’m new to your channel I watched a few videos. I enjoy all your tips and information and adventures. I was thinking of you guys during your windstorm like Matt Damon on the Martian stuck inside the during the HAB during the storm. You’re Alaska trip sounds awesome you positive from Southern California
What a great comparison 😂 I'm sure you thought of that because I have such a striking resemblance to Matt. 😁 -J

You will be super happy with the BF Goodrich AT tires. My favorite. I have gotten 60,000 out of them. Just be sure to use the correct air pressure and rotate them! Best in snow too!
So the air pressure my truck says to use, correct? -J
To me, having the dog identifiable as our is the most basic form of saying "This dog is part of our family and we want to protect her."
While I don't have a solution to the problem, I am 100% against puppy mills and I would think they are actually one of the biggest contributors to said cultural problem since a puppy mill treats dogs as commodities and female dogs as factories.
Oh... and thanks for the Happy Birthday wishes!! 😁😁 -J
@@OpenRoading I can accept that. Now go give Trinity a hug for me.

I recently subscribed to your channel and am still catching up on older episodes. You guys should buy and electric heater and use it instead of your propane whenever you have electric hookups. At campgrounds you have already paid for the electricity. I also noticed the massive 20kw generator in the background at your gate guarding site.
I think (i'm not sure) you see the electric fireplace going in this video. We used the pretty much exclusively at this particular workcamping gig! -J
@@OpenRoading Oops, I missed that part. I thought you were using propane for heating.
@@marty6055 No worries! Yeah - it was nice at this gig to have the fridge and most of our heat provided by the generator. We still have a propane on demand hot water heater and had to turn on the propane heat when we got super cold - but that was it for propane usage during this particular gig! -J
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much! 🤗
I will never get used to seeing a superthanks notification pop up. I'm sure of that. -J
Great video's. So glad your took Trinity with you and she's doing so good.
Thanks so much! -J
Treats for Trinity, Bunny and you guys! Keep up the hard work, Alaska bound! Did I mention Trinity 😃
Awe... Thank you so much. That is so so so incredibly generous of you. We're heading to town soon and hoping to get her a more proper bed over the pile of blankets she currently has stolen from us. 🤣 -J
only 60 that would be normal on the oregon coast in our rv
You are made of stronger stuff than me if that is "normal" for you. 😂 -J
The wind was crazy! I'm scared in the wind in sticks/brick, can't imagine how y'all felt. Trinity seems to be settling in nicely! I don't understand the dumping of animals, it hurts my heart.❤️🐾
Imagine wind and an earthquake at the same time in your sticks and bricks and that's about the feeling. 😂 -J
After all the towing and driving rough roads it would be a good idea to inspect your suspension and get an alignment on your truck to help conserve those nice new tires.
Thanks for the tip! We did get an alignment done within the past year or so. -J
This is good advice.
@@comingstobrazil You would know!
Have a great birthday. Currently up in Alaska but plan to be traveling on the road in a few years.
Thank you so much for your generosity...AGAIN! 🥹
It was a fantastic birthday right up until the wind. 😂 As to being in Alaska right now....stay warm! -J
@@OpenRoading yes staying warm has been tough lately. Have not seen above zero in the past week.
@@wolverinealaska6937 And this is why we won't be up there till June! 😂
Can't dund rhe video on Cody ? How is he doing?
He's still hanging in there. He got diagnosed with a cancer back in November but he keeps hopping around the RV and enjoying life. He just takes meds every day. We didn't know if he would make it this long but we are glad he's still enjoying a happy life. -J
We are enjoying your channel! Nancy and Andy
❤️❤️
Thank you so so much Nancy and Andy! So amazingly generous of you to give us an extra push toward our goal. 🤩 -J&K
What is your wife’s business
That is a FANTASTIC and very timely question. Kalyn dives into more detail on it in tomorrow’s video! Drops at 7pm Central time. -J
My heart goes out to you for seeing that poor dog.
P.S. my favorite app for tracking wind speeds and storms is the Windy app.
Getting ready for round 2 this weekend it appears 😭 -J
This unit is amazing for extra heat. Lixada Outdoor Heater, Outdoor Portable Gases Heater Cover. I use it in my fifth wheel when needing a little extra heat 😊
Thanks for the rec. I think we're going to try to just avoid crazy cold temps moving forward. 😂 -J
Whoooo boy! Propane heater just a goin! 😂@@carletterice2167
Put a plug in that tyre, they work well and more than safe on rear
Unfortunately the leak was on the sidewalk. It was literally a pinhole (I tiny bubble every few seconds with soapy water) BUT - we got new tires a video or two later. -J
Unfortunately it was in the side wall JUST a bit off the tread so a plug wasn't an option. It was however...crazy tiny. Hit it with soap and it would take 4 seconds for a tiny bubble to show. That said...we got them replaced a few days after this video was shot. -J
When you can not use the fireplace, a small $20 ceramic heater from Walmart will work wonders.
Yeah. I’ve stayed away from space heaters primarily due to space when not in use. We have such limited storage we try to not carry things that we would only use once or twice a year and could technically live without. Since the only time we can’t use our heat is in strong wind - a space heater would big time fall into that category. -J
The faster you drive on the bumpy dirt roads the smoother it is.
Wow! Pretty strong winds. Glad you survived. We are heading to Alaska in 2025.
Nice video, Thank you for sharing
Sooo many abandoned dogs. Makes our hearts ache when we see them. -J
Pretty sure 70MPH sustained winds would send our RV to the junk yard. 😳 -J
I REALLY want to see you guys compete on RV Unplugged! (I'm "Pastor B's" sister and a big fan!)
Oh hey!! Thanks so much for watching!! That would be a lot of fun to compete. I just saw the 2nd season is supposed to release soon! :) - K
Thanks!
Where can I find information on work camping jobs with cruise lines? No luck finding info. Thanks in advance.
Hopefully I'll see you in 2025 when hopefully I get to go
Dawn I sent you info. I don't see it on this thread. Let me know if you didn't get it and I'll try again. IM Not good on this.
@@KevinYandell-v9u Thanks for sharing that info for her! -J
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Our Truck windshield is a mess already so hard to know.
Of course we know it's going to be expensive to do everything but yikes.
Next week we trade wind for cold! -J
👈 HEY Trinity ... I love you🥰😘
We will pass on the message. 🙂 -J
@@OpenRoading 😂 thanks
Your Star link was less than 2' from being destroyed. I played it on slow motion and God was definitely looking out for ya.
Texas does have a huge problem with abandoned dogs. There's a certain culture that refuses to tie their dogs up. They believe in letting their dogs rom free like they do "back home". Its a hige problem in those communities then the dogs multiple and travel. *It's just a fact.*
I live part time in the Texas Hill County with Fire and Rescue and we receive alot of calls from Travelers that their pets either ran off chasing wildlife or ran off being chased by wildlife and never returning.
By the empty box? I think the starlink could’ve handled it! 😁
Happy birthday!! Love Trinity!! She’s such a blessing for you..
Thanks so much! -J
Trinity is Awesome and is really becoming part of the family so much easier than I ever imagined. -J
Happy Birthday Joseph... wishing you many more to come.. from Bangalore India.
Thank you so much! Furthest sent birthday wishes award!! 🥇 -J
Y’all are so cute, hope you survived the crazy cold!!! Fair warning, spring in West Texas just gets windier and windier!!
We hope to be moving north by April! Pretty sure overall we are getting spoiled by the lack of wind this year. -J
Wonder why people make a big deal about an Alaska rv trip .
It just a paved road like any other.
We boondock most of the time and will be staying in those spots as much as possible, which are usually a ways from the main road. :) -K

That cheesecake was twice as much as we should have eaten. It was CRAZY rich. 😂 J
Being from TX, I used to get out on the road and just drive across the state and back, just to clear my head. Those winds & the drought; now you know why there's not many trees in West TX.
We laugh at every wind warning that says “beware of falling trees.” Where?? 😂 -J
Happy Birthday 🎉 Wow I lived in El Paso and saw huge dust storms but never anything like those winds. I was really on the edge of my seat. Trinity is so sweet and a special pup. So sad about the other 😢
Thanks so much for stopping by! This was the strongest winds we've ever ridden out in the RV. Not sure I want to experience stronger! -J
Love your journey, thank you for your channel, looking forward to the next one , was said to here about the dog kalyn found over the bank, my wife and I found a dog at the side of a road in New Mexico that had 3 puppies with her we cried for 2 days it was sad , we did all we could do for them

Happy Birthday Joseph! I live/sell trailers in East TX and the wind here is definitely on another level here. Glad to see y’all made it through!
Thanks so much! -J
Those are some insane winds. Wind is probably our least favorite weather issue that we have to deal with in the RV. While we are a bit late..... Happy Birthday, Joesph. Stay Safe and congrats on 40% benchmark
Thanks so much!
And wind sucks. 😂 -J
Happy Birthday!! We have found x-chocks really help the rocking and give us piece of mind.
I bought some of those at a garage sale but always struggled to get them between my tires. I used them for a while but my tires were too close for that specific set. 😭 I'm on the lookout for another set though - just hard to spend so much money on something so simple and small. (Or I'm just cheap) 🤣 -J
