You guys are a breath of fresh air amongst all the other pretentious van lifers/nomads. 10 large jars of PB. I love it. Who needs a Netflix subscription when we have your stories? Trinity is amazing. You guys got so lucky with her. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to next Fridays update.
Thank you so much. I think of all the kind words we've received the people who tell us that they are literally looking for our video on Friday night means the most. 🤗 What incredible kind encouragement. Thank you. -J
Guys, we have Costco and other grocery stores here in Alaska. You don't need to over stock. We travel back and forth and food in America is a little cheaper but not extraordinarily cheaper than Alaska. Make sure you don't overload your trailer. And make sure your bearings are in excellent shape. Springs can be an issue also.
Problem for us is we will most likely rarely be near big chain stores. We'll cross paths with them occasionally. Doing wheel maintenance in Canada. This thing is a beast that I think would surprise most RVers what she can handle. I'm hoping the suspension makes it through Alaska but time will tell. Only so much money and time for projects. -J
People.... if you shop Costco, Walmart... prices are pretty similar to lower 48. Next all that extra weight your going to carry now. Well your savings just evaporated because your going to spend more in fuel. I know I live in Alaska. Everyone thinks they will save on groceries but don't realize the extra expense in fuel.
@@croombsr My favorite part is the fact that I have people from Alaska telling me that I was smart and people from Alaska telling me I'm wasting money on gas. 😂 The internet is fun. Genuinely so. I'm not mad. 😂 I'm honestly not sure how much effect 300lbs or so is going to have on fuel. Weather will play more of a role than that. Side note - you have 9 walmarts in your beautiful state. 4 of them are in Anchorage and 1 more in Wasilla. We won't be close to them for 90% of our trip. This is the giant thing people are missing about this stockup when they are telling us the prices are the same. We aren't RVing to Anchorage.... we're RVing across a large portion of the state and will be rural 90% of the time. (Percentage made up but probably not far off). -J
@@OpenRoading the places you're going to in Alaska are on the road system, right? To go anywhere you'll be going through Fairbanks and Anchorage, so plenty of big box stores. Yeah, i wouldn't shop for groceries in Chicken. And lots of vets and laundromats. The weather's looking good, I think you'll have a great time!
You know, on the one hand, she rolled in that stuff and you cleaned her, so when you got back from the big shopping trip, it is obvious Trinity was just trying to help with cleaning herself up, and she thought napkins were the best option. I suggest she be given a treat as a reward. Great video you two, and Trinity knows you are her people..
It was so weird because she's NEVER had an issue. We've been gone for longer. I think something triggered her OR she just saw the napkins and was like "HEY! Present for me!?" 😂 -J
So my dog loves the texture of paper and cloth. Paper towels and napkins are usually not a problem on the digestive system. However, socks and cloth items can be a whole different story, as in major surgery.
For sure. We have a family member who's dog ate a blanket to dire consequences. So far - Trin seems to just like to rip and toss paper products - but we're still keeping them out of range for her. -J
We have been looking forward to this video all week! Wow, it's really strange seeing snow at this time of the year! We are happy that Trinity is OK and Cody passed his exam! Some dogs just love tearing up tissues, napkins, etc! Our Maggie is 17 years old, and still is drawn to napkins like a magnet. She'll never outgrow it! 🙂
My Churri (8 month old kitten). Loves napkins, Kleenex and toilet paper not only does he love to tear it up and spread it all over the RV. He likes to eat it. Of course the tpaper is for my black tank so it will dissolve readily. I hope.
@OpenRoading one important thing is to never use Q-Tips with plastic sticks. Our dogs have eaten qtips after chewing on them. The paper sticks soften and can pass right through their bodies, but those plastic ones will never pass.
@@cynthiaogrey4330 I felt that "I hope" 😂 Trinity ate part of a rope toy....we got the "honor" of witnessing the fact that bits of string do not dissolve. 👀 -J
We call those dog snuggling the ground moves salmon love because that’s what our chihuahua would do to salmon carcasses along the American river. I recall reading it was a canine response to scent and there were some perfumes that would trigger the same behavior.
And to think I saw this as cute....Now....I don't want to know why Trinity does this daily to our carpet in the RV.... 👀👀👀👀 I swear we clean it and have even shampoed it multiple times 😂 -J
Trinity just has a little separation anxiety going on. A couple easy tips are heavy exercise right before you leave her to tire her out and leave a radio or tv on for noise compensation. Also if possible start with shorter trips away from her..basically showing you will always come home. Sounds silly but given her history, she has done remarkably well adjusting to the boondock lifestyle so far. It's really exciting seeing your trip planning coming together.
Thanks for the tips. Ir's really interesting because she has never had any issues with it. We've been gone for longer. The only difference was Cody was with us and we left napkins in reach. She's always chill when we leave, and when we arrive she's happy to see us but not overly so. It's like "Hey... good you're back can we go for a walk now?" as opposed to "YOUR BACK YOUR BACK YOUR BACK!!!" 😂 Part of me thinks she just got bored..... -J
Enjoy the trip you have worked so hard for! I enjoy seeing your journey and think you are such genuine, great people. You and a few other channels are giving me the rv life itch😀
Wow. Thank you so much for your generous support of the channel. 🥲 It means the world to us. Thank you! And be careful - that RV itch can get out of control! 😂 (speaking as a 5 year full timer.)
Right?! I opened the door and imediatly closed it and was like "KALYN....start recording" so that I got her reaction - But Trinity's reaction was THE best. She knew she messed up. lol But we love her anyway. -J
Joe, you need to grab one of these for the occasions that the spigot doesn’t have threads! Camco Water Bandit | Features a Highly Flexible Silicone-Polymer Sleeve
I wish I had known you were heading near our place in Star Valley, Wyoming. We have a ranch and full hook up RV spot for when we get guests or store our RV there. Dr. Tina is the best in Alpine and if you haven't noticed, everyone is super nice in Wyoming and Idaho. You were 20 miles from our ranch! Enjoy the adventure and travel safe.
When we got Rudy, the Beagle, he was not allowed to have table food, sleep with us or get on the furniture. Mike is the “Softie” and within a few months guess what happened. Yep, He became a Couch Potato, a Bed Hog and the best at Begging. He also loved to empty the the trash baskets for us. 🤗
Empty the trash for you....somehow I'm thinking this wasn't an amazing feat of helpfulness where he took it out to the curb... 😂 Dogs bring so much joy...pretty sure that's why we go soft on them. -J
Thought about it - but that crack was spidering out in different directions. It was going to be a safety hazard soon enough. 🙂 If we have to get a new one after...we have to get a new one after. -J
Wow that was some shopping experience. Oh my God, I had to laugh at Trinity, tearing up the napkins, she was very naughty. I think she was not happy ❤She was left behind for the day. Can’t wait to see the Alaska trip.
She had some sort of a blast. I just wish I had set up a camera in the RV to see it. I think one of these times I'm going to set up a camera time lapsing while we are gone but I expect it to be her laying on the couch....getting some water...going back to the couch. If I want to spice it up I'll have to leave a bag with a years worth of napkins in it. 😂 -J
LOL! My husband said no more dogs on the bed when we got our Doodle. He made it two weeks! She got shots and he decided that she didn’t feel well so to the bed she came!!! I get it! 😂
Haha! So I think we give her a bad wrap. This is the only thing she's ever gotten into when we've been gone. Holding off on the crate simply because we don't need another thing taking up space (even the foldable ones...the underside of our couch is already taken so no good spot to put it when not in use. 😁 If we come home to a destroyed couch sometime...we may have to consider it - but in the meantime I'm chalking this one up as a failure on our part, not hers. -J
Separation anxiety. She'll get better. You'll be money ahead in Alaska. Meat and veggies in Canada is not as bad as Alaska but it's better in the states right now. Safe travels.
I think this was a crime of opportunity. 😂 She saw napkins and thought toys. We've left her in the RV numerous times with no anxiety issues. Keeping our eyes open though! -J
Guys I hope you weighted your rig with all that stuff in it. The trip to Alaska and back is very hard on rigs based on my two trips over the years. Do not overload your 5th wheel or truck because some of the roads are very wash boarded or pot holed and other have huge swells in them when the road is paved. I took two spare 5th wheels and used both. Enjoy watching your channel on YT and going to Alaska as we are now retired and will be heading up there next year.
Haven’t weighed her, but have taken her down roads that I’m 100% confident are as bad if not worse than what we will encounter in some areas of Alaska. We’ll see what we come across but after driving this girl for 5 years I’m pretty confident she’s gonna do well. Only time will tell though! -J
Nice. We stocked up mostly on stuff that we know we use a lot of and aren't sure whether or not our favorites (cough jif cough) are available. We also are RURAL almost all the time. Rural is always more expensive. -J
@@terrym.8008 many years ago we bought our first jar of peanut butter in Canada and now buy nothing but natural at home. It may have changed now but that first jar made us despise the ingredients and taste of US peanut butter. So many things in Canada taste better folks that go for the first time can’t believe it. The first time I hand someone a chocolate bar from a true Canadian company …. 😀 or even a brand name. They just can’t stop talking about how different it is. And don’t even get me started on Cheezies 🎉
Great video as always!! When we went into Canada ( 1998 ) they took our hamburger meat and steaks ( freezer bags ) because they wasn't in the original packaging . They also took our eggs because they to weren't in the original packaging . They also nearly took all our potatoes but let us keep them when we were able to pull the bag out of the trash can to prove the were USA potatoes. I'm sure times have changes but I would find the official Canada website they will tell you whats aloud today . Thanks for the update on T Mobile because that's what we use and had only heard that they were going to charge more . Now we will keep it until they raise the rate . P.S Trinity is still the bestest dog !!!!
Had the same problem with a pint of bluberries and a bag of potatoes. But the sole border agent, three weeks after labor day, looked up at us and said "Just make sure to eat them on the boat and don't bring them next time." It's a pleasure to meet a real human being!
Yeah - we are just not taking any produce or meat across just to be able to say "no" if they ask. We figure the more we can give simple answers for the better! -J
I posted on another of your videos. We’re 1 of 3 couples taking truck campers from Northern WI to AK next Spring. I’ve looked at that Canadian website for what you can take across. Wonder if it’s just me, but I found it confusing. Can you bring canned tuna, mayo, jerky? I can live on tuna😂. How about peanut butter? Is that why you bought it in CN, or was that just try it?
Trinity being a little troublemaker, but also it could have been way worst. At least no holes in walls or floors. Plus, from the looks of the video she had probably a little more time alone then was good for her. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and will see you guys next week
It was totally out of the blue. 😂 We've left her for longer with no issue. She's suuuuuper chill. I think this was a crime of opportunity. We left the napkins just sitting on the floor and at some point she was like "Hey... a present!" 😂 -J
@@OpenRoading you are onto something there. Our little Maka, first ever boy dog, absolutely never goes shishi in the house. Ever. Unless we leave something on the floor. He lets us know his displeasure with our untidiness by peeing on it. lol He likes consistency. 😉
I lived in Alaska for 7 years. I lived in the interior in Tok the first town you encounter coming in on the AK highway for 4 years. Weather could be a lot warmer in summer than coastal areas. Also, because many roads were gravel covered, I got a windshield crack immediately. I replaced the windshield, but got another crack almost immediately from other vehicles kicking up gravel. I never replaced the windshield again until I moved back to the lower 48. A good thing for you: staying overnight on any road turnout on the AK highway was ok. If you are going to be in AK during the fall/winter you need to retrofit your engine to be able to plug it in to heat it. No building codes in Tok so I saw people living in RVs but put up walls of straw bales for insulation.
Another great video! Really liking the drone work. Joe, I went back and binged the first 2 seasons and while you can see a difference in content, flow and quality, it was not as bad as you were making it out to be. (Grin) You all come across as so genuine and the content is a good mix of all aspects of your “off-roading” life. Looking forward to the coming month’s content. Safe journeys! (And a big hug for Trinity!)
Another great video glad trinity is good, btw my 5 month old Bulldog has taken to your videos full disclosure it’s mostly when he sees Trinity 😁. Safe travels guys
Yikes, thats a lot of money for no fruits veggies or meat. Oh and that little paper disaster was Trinity trying to make confetti to celebrate your Alaska adventure😂. You two handled that so well. She knew she had done something wrong...Love the adventures and can't wait to see whats next.❤
You two are so cute! Gotta tell ya, I look forward to getting the updates on your little family. What I found so interesting was Trinitys behavior when Cody was zipped up to go. Her concern was palpable! If you wondered if they had bonded, that was your answer. Great job btw! She definitely knows your routine. Omg, when you found her cleaning up while you guys were gone.lol Even the shoes! She just got bored. 😂 That would make an adorable pic of her. She’s still amazing. Looks like you guys are ready for Alaska! You worked so hard for it and I’m so happy it’s happening for you. Until next time!
The bond is funny because it's one way! Cody couldn't care less about Trinity...but Trinity wants to lick him. You can feel her disappointment when he runs away after getting "groomed" with a tongue the size of his head. 😂 -J
Very cool video. I've been following you guys for a couple months now. I am gate guarding with my girlfriend down in South Texas where you guys used to be but I'm originally from Idaho Falls so it was very cool to see you guys running about my hometown. Having grown up there I have camped many times up Fall Creek and all around Palisades. After we are done here in Texas in another 3 weeks or so we are heading back to Idaho to work as kayak guides on the Teton river for the summer. We're very excited about that one!! I appreciate your guys's videos. I like the energy you have on screen and the information you share. I'm a fan!!
The one workcamping gig I wish we had gotten but went with gate guarding instead was a zipline guide. I feel like that would have been a cool way to spend a season! I'm betting you're gonna love being a river guide. That sounds awesome! -J
I see other people are telling you exactly what I did. You ARE a breath of fresh air. Yes, I knew she’d be in the bed soon. Love it so much. And I understand because I only became a dog lady three years ago when we got Smokey. I was a cat lady for 40 years. Poor Cody! His space was gone. And Trinity was not happy being left without Cody. She might do well with one of those toys they have to solve to get treats. Or there is a little rubber like toy you can put peanut butter in, but then you’d have to share! lol You guys are like me. I plan, plan, plan when I go on the road. Travel mercies for y’all.
@@OpenRoading that is the perfect match. My late first husband was the driver and I loved it. We traveled a lot to my home state because my dad was alive. Then after he passed I was the driver which was okay. My second husband is legally blind so I never let him drive! lol
I am SO proud of you guys for stockpiling! 🎉 Well done indeed! Yes, you spend money to save money but will come out ahead in the long run. I am 100% convinced of that! And the grocery geek in me totally wanta to go along to see prices in Alaska! 😂 I think you could easily consolidate 4 protein powders into 3 of the containers since they settle so much. As for the pb? I always stock up on it too! Just put it wherever it fits. You’ve got this! 😊
I feel like stockpiling and RVing is a niche that shouldn't exist.... 😂 We'll be sure to share prices along the way! Thanks for the encouragement, as always, Kristen! -J
God bless you guys 🙏🙏🙏 I am so sorry about your napkins. My wife and I have a Class A diesel pusher. Two nice things about it is the basement storage and my wife can use the bathroom while I drive. I can't wait to see your Alaska adventure. By the way, while you have snow and freezing rain it is currently 92° in Sarasota Florida.
I was screaming to my computer for you to put the napkins out of reach of trinity! The stuffed shoe was hilarious! Loved the thyme reference! The Amazon locker game never gets old❣ 🇺🇸🙈🙉🙊
Thanks so very much! I'd like to make a quick correction....we say we upload every Friday...I just checked and it appears we upload every Saturday for you. Sorry that you get it a day later than everyone else. 😉 -J
I'm leaving next Sunday to go to Alaska for my first time going to fly into Anchorage of course and then going to Palmer and Wasilla have family up there❤ excited to watch your journey and I absolutely love your baby girl Trinity❤. It will be nice not having to deal with her going into heat too❤. It looks like she might have rolled in another animals mess that is something 2 watch out for❤ some dogs are notorious poop eaters when it comes to some dogs and another thing to keep an eye out possibly is she might be one of those dogs that goes up and smells it and rolls in it? it might be nothing at all but we used to have a dog that would smell something nasty or dead or another animals mess to put it nicely and then would role in it just like she rolled there at the vet ❤ you probably know this but I just wanted to let you know❤ God bless all four of you and thank you so much for another awesome video❤❤❤
And here I was hoping that she just liked the cold of the snow.......... Now I have to worry because she also does that to our floor....is our floor that bad?!!?!?!? 😂 -J
Ugh! I had a long comment going, but didn't finish it before the video ended! 🤦♀️ Anyway, great video as usual. Looking forward to seeing Alaska through your eyes! Praying for you all.
That is a strike on your Dog parenting card. You left Trinity for too long. We had our Ally that use to pick all the tissues out of the box when left alone too long. Great video. Thank you for sharing. Safe Travels.
Uh oh...I was unaware of this report card! Who's in charge of it? How do we remove strikes? What happens if we get 3? 😂 In all honesty we've left her for longer. She is super chill and generally we can't even get her to play with her toys. She just loves running, long walks, and chilling on the couch. We had a random snow storm go through while we were gone and I'm wondering if there was some random thunder or tiny hail involved that freaked her out. -J
You guys are great pet parents. Just started following your adventures and are really enjoying them. We have thought about the Alcan as well just trying to figure when. One thing we have heard about with the pets is that the state of Alaska requires a VPI (I believe that’s what it’s called). It’s a veterinarian pet inspection. SAFE TRAVELS
Yep! That's what we got for Cody in this video. It's funny because we've crossed into Canada before with the rabbits with no issue so we were surprised that Alaska needed something! -J
no, T mobile has always done their cancelations like that--I had it and I needed to package it up, go on line, get the mailing info, print it and then deliver it to a UPS store for return--and then waited 4 months for the refund--T mobile BITES it big time
Maybe I'm just stubborn, but they tried to pull that scam on me, and it didn't work. I made the store do all that while I waited. The stores seem to be franchises, not actual company stores. I'm looking at Nomad Internet. It uses cell towers and doesn't seem to be tied to any specific carrier. I use Red Pocket Mobile for phone service at $30 a year...tiny bit of data and set calls/texts amounts.
Once you get to Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, June 1 is like May 1 in the midwest and South. We crossed at Coutts on June 13. It was 40 degrees, very foggy and rainy. We had 10 days of reservations in Banff and Jasper. Weather prediction was mixed precipitation for days. We canceled all the reservations and kept on driving. Lost money in cancelation fees but sitting in a camper van for days on end and unable to see the mountains, didn't appeal to us. Lesson learned. No reservations more than 5 days in advance from now on!
Reservations are so hard because sometime if you don’t make them super early you won’t be able to get them later. But like you said…then the weather can be awful! 😞 -J
I can't wait to see where you put all of that. I'm impressed with your planning, but it will save you money (and time!) later. And dear, sweet Trin! She missed you both (and her bunny buddy.) My dogs do that shoe thing -- I think it's because shoes smell so much like y'all and it's comforting. And chewing is also a way dogs comfort themselves, so shredding those napkins made her feel a little better. Maybe leave a chew toy with her next time -- though I hope with Cody there she'll feel calmer. Thanks for another great video!
Under the bed. In cabinets, Over fire place console. In the closet. 😂 I always forget to put a chew toy out because she generally pays zero attention to them. But I will get it out there next time! And keep the napkins OFF the floor. 😂 -J

Trinity is so sweet. I have a catahoula mix. She has really adapted well to life on the road since she adopted you. I'm betting she was still feeling a bit worn out since she's still recovering from her surgery and the uterine infection and that's why she wanted to sleep in. I hear ya about saying that there would be no dogs on the bed. We made about 4 months before my guy ended up on the bed. Lol. I get the feeling she was feeling a little bit frustrated that you took her buddy and left her on her own based on the napkin event. I've experienced similar scenes of destruction unfortunately. At least she didn't chew up your shoes.
I live in Salt Lake City. Both south and lower in elevation from where you are. I had frost on my truck bed cover this morning. Sorry, welcome to the bi-polar weather of the Rockies in spring.
Haha! Nice some days...cold others. We're up in the Canadian Rockies now. No snow...yet....but it's been 30's at night, no more than the 50's during the day....and rain...lots of rain. -J
Right! But....are not the prices at least $0.37 higher (per dollar) than US prices? We'll be keeping track for sure! We'll see if the stock up was a good idea or not. -J
I know you’ll love being in Alaska this summer. We should be due for a warm, and dry year this year. I want to say I think you will be surprised that the cost up here is not as bad as you think, yes fresh fruits and vegetables can get expensive, the staples will not be too bad. If you want to see a eagles nest, we have one in our yard on a lake close to the town Wasilla, and we would love to share it with you, and would have you boondock in our yard so you could enjoy it. Just remember, as wonderful Alaska is, Canada also has some very cool sightseeing also.
So kind of you. I know we are going to be going through Wasilla. I don't know as of yet when, how long, or if Kalyn has lodging planned yet. We will be traveling with another couple as well. If we don't get the opportunity to spend time with you at your home, we are planning on doing a meetup in Anchorage. More details to come on that! Really looking forward to exploring. -J
Hey Darren, We're going to be in the area for the next 2 weeks or so and we're struggling to find some good boondocking. I thought I remembered someone offering and I found your comment but it looks like I never asked whether or not you had space for 2 rigs. if this offer is still available, and you have space for 2 rigs, would you mind shooting us an email to rvopenroading@gmail.com ? We might be game to take you up on your offer. -J
Trinity has trained her companions to allow the bed, Trin unhappy with supply cash dump, Trin trying to tell you something, are you listening? Another excellent video, appreciate your content and hard work producing. Stay positive and safe travels you two.
Hey guys. Read the news at Fort Nelson before you head north. We just got through before they shut down the entire Alaska Highway. It's a pretty big deal around here. We're up from Tucson, just left May 1. Safe Travels. Pay attention to BC 511 and Yukon 511.
Oh no! Now you don't have a year's supply of napkins! 🤣 Trinity needs a toy or chew treat when you go out. Shoes will be a repeat occurrence if you leave them out when you are away. My bunny had a tumor on his leg for years. It wasn't cancerous, but it did get bigger as he got older. Little guy lived to be 9 years old.
@@OpenRoadingI suspect she has a certain amount of time she does fine before she gets too bored and looks for something to keep her busy. lol sorry it still makes me giggle to remember the look on her face.
Also, there are many small towns in AK you can re-supply. I got a 25% pay raise for moving for my job in Tok but I found out it wasn't 25% more expensive.
Again, Love the videos! I really like seeing the reality of RV travels/living. The more I learn from everyone the more I plan into our Dunesport RV build. We are having them put 100 gallon fresh/grey/black tanks that is reinforced for full transport, and 4400W of residential solar. Our current setup we were amazed that our 1200W of solar fully ran everything when we were out West, but Here in the South East 1200W does not cut it (mentioned that before but some commenters may not have seen that). We are upgrading our current RV to 2000W and switched to Residential 48v batteries and inverters for more efficient operation. I guess the last note is in regards to storage. We are building our new Dunesport to hold our jeep, giving it triple axle 8k running gear, which gives us the headroom for water and solar weight. Cant wait to see more on your adventures! I'm taking all the notes I can since we are about 5 years out from our Alaska trip.
Very cool! Would love to tour your rig when you get it all set up! One of my big frustrations down the road when we eventually need to buy a newer rig is going to be finding one that is built sturdy enough to handle the weight. This girl is a beast so I think we've been pretty spoiled! -J
The one time I left my dog home completely alone he did the same thing. My mom (who I consider an animal expert) suggested that I crate him up if I ever have to do that again. Usually he's at home with my cat and is just fine when I get home.
Cancelling lines has always required a call in - they have a retentions team that will try to talk you into keeping it. And they can make "deals" that the stores cannot. This is the same for all the big carriers. The MVNOs tend to be more flexible. (I am on Google Fi myself)
@@OpenRoading nah, they have had hundreds of people calling to cancel lines for the exact reason you did. They aren't trying to save any of the "Home Internet but not" accounts and they know you aren't going to pay for their "AWAY" version.

Glad you guys are doing well. My daughter lives in Boise. A few years when visiting I replaced the windshield for her. A few days later when driving me to the airport a rock chipped the windshield! Grrrrrrrrroan.
I ran into a similar general delivery problem in Arizona.... USPS staff at this rural post office in Congress, AZ said "you must register with us for general delivery". And after that, the registration is only valid for 30 days and the packages/mail are sent back to sender. There is a consistency problem with general delivery policy at various post offices.
I hope you have a really safe trip. I recommend you not to take the cassiar highway. It can be beautiful, but it’s very dangerous at times at some of the rest stops. I also recommend not to travel camp along highway 16 “highway of tears” in British Columbia. Best bet is to stay on the alcan. I live in Fairbanks Alaska. Drove up and down the alcan and the cassiar for many years. There’s so much to see in Alaska. It’s beautiful. You’ll run into road construction at the border of Alaska and Yukon. Some construction in various other places as well. If you take the tok cutoff, be careful, the road can get “really bad”. Same from Glennallen to Valdez. Some road construction just south of Fairbanks too. Just take it slow and easy. We have a Costco up here in Fairbanks as well, pretty good prices. Expect to pay about 4.20 or more for gas, I think about 4 to 5$ for diesel. Hope you all have a really blessed trip. Enjoy, it’s a beautiful drive from sumas Washington all the way up.
Hi Joe and Kaylen! We've recently subscribed to your channel and cant wait for Alaska! We actually know your families..Joe, you look just like your dad, and Kaylyn, you look just like your mom😅, I grew up in the same church as Kaylyn (SEVERAL years earlier!!) -- I am the oldest Redfield daughter, Amy. My husband, 9 kids and I live in Central VA now. We soak up everything Alaska ever since my sister Erin moved there! We appreciate the channel, very interesting!
Hi Amy! So kind. The older I get the more I see my dad looking back at me in the mirror every day. Still trying to keep the hair though. 😁 We're looking forward to meeting up with Erin and Jesse as we travel through their beautiful state! -J
Trinity had a little separation anxiety? After the intro I fast forwarded to the end to see what she did😮. Be thankful, that could have been much worse. Love your videos! Now I can go back and watch the whole thing😅.
I think it was crime of opportunity. She's never had issues with us being gone (including for longer) so I think she just thought the napkins were a toy or something outside triggered her. We'll see though! Keeping our eyes out for other signs and not leaving napkins on the floor again. 😂 -J
I'm always wary of 3rd party internet providers. I hear some are great...but some have turned out to have a lot of legal issues. So for the most part we've stayed with name brands of that as much as we can. -J
As you are heading up to Alaska, be aware of the current road conditions. Wild fired north of Ft Nelson, no power or internet in some communities north of there. Get some Canadian cash. We are in Homer Ak today.
Yeah, we're watching the fires with interest. Thankfully we are still a month out from going down the Alcan so we'll see whats going on then and whether or not we have to go to plan b. -J
We'll try to remember to give it a taste test...But I must warn you...this is like asking someone to consider becoming a fan of a different hockey team. 😂 -J
They have stalled that move on Tmobile for later. We have the Tmobile and have had amazing service. With every service, I think that it depends on where you are. We dont move as often. Only twice a year for us. You guys are all over the place. I'm sure it makes a difference.
We often see changes in service based on location of course! But we've gotten pretty good at knowing if we are far enough within a coverage area to get decent service. I knew something was up with ours when we were at a spot that had 4 bars of 5g service and our download speed was 1.7mbps. I'm 100% confident that our device was flagged because we move so much. We were at a boondocking spot that was in the coverage map...and on campendium it was listed as 3 or 4 bars....we got squat. Like any rollout - I don't think they throttled everyone "breaking the rules" at once...but based on what I've been seeing we're not alone. My hunch is that their delay is because so many people are cancelling as opposed to upping to the $160 plan. I've been wrong before 😁 but I'm betting they didn't really realize just how many of their home users are actually mobile users and how many of them weren't about to be soaked for an additional $1,200 per year. -J
@@OpenRoading I agree. We would have canceled for sure. We were worried because it said 4G for this area outside of Boston. So far it's been good for us.
@@OpenRoading me either. Im sure its because so many have said that they would go elsewhere. We switch the address every move. We are in place so we are ok. We are grandfathered in at $30 a month so we dont want to lose that price.
Poor Trinity, anxiety is tough. You could put some of that jiff peanut butter in a kong, it works if she is food/treat driven. Just be sure NOT to use peanut butter with sweetners like xylitol, It's very dangerous for dogs. We always use the jiff for Rusty.
I'm not sure it was anxiety but we will keep our eye on it. I think it was opporunity combined with something going on outside (weather? Truck?). We've left her for longer with no problems. But we also didn't leave a lifetime supply of napkins on the floor... 😂 -J
Wow you are super organized! I liken your preparedness to that of the miners heading to the klondike goldrush in the 1800’s 😅 I loved the censorship logo and my husband had to point out “see I’m not the only one with plummers crack” even Joe! 😂Cody is so cute! 🥰 and Trinity is so lucky to have found you guys ❤️ what a great life you are giving her❤ we love watching your travels and excited to see the Alaska trip.
Not that I follow every law on the book...but it's illegal to drive with a crack as large as ours and it was expanding daily. Better to get it taken care of than give a police officer something to give us a 24 hour repair notice for. Stay tuned for a windshield update in 2 weeks. 🙂 -J
Continue to love your videos. Your editing and storytelling are very compelling. I have watched a LOT of RV RUclipsrs (and continue to), but yours is one of the few I keep up with regularly and make sure I see every one. A couple of things to consider. First, maybe putting GPS coordinates of the boondocking spots you are at so people can more easily find them for themselves. Every time you post it, I go to AllStays or Campendium and see if I can find it, and I usually do, but some people may not know to look there. Second, consider setting up a camera inside your RV when you're gone. It would've been some GREAT footage of Trinity going at the napkins to add to your video. Just having "Trinity Cam" as some B-Roll footage to add might be interesting at times. Just a thought. Keep up the good work! You're doing a great job!
Oh the camera thing is happening - but I think it's going to be boring unless we leave napkins out again. Pretty sure she just chills out on the couch. 😂 I'll see if Kalyn wants to start putting GPS in the descriptions. Thanks so much for sticking with us! -J
@@OpenRoading …you wouldn’t need to include the footage every time, but I might be a nice option. You could also intercut a “back in the RV…“ type footage as well. Just a thought.
As a retired postmaster, please know every post office in every city in the U S is required to accepted general delivery. In large Cities, there is usually one office that provides this service. You are not required to notify them beforehand, however, a postcard notification would probably be a good idea given the confusion. The only requirement is it must be picked up before 30 days. I adore you two and I'm absolutely in love with Trinity! Safe travels.
So appreciate this! Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll add some postmasters to the Alaska postcard club! 😁 In Pecos, TX after we got our first general delivery they said any future one was going to cost us $10. General delivery is listed as an option at their location on the website (we always check). The other thing we encounter is we know a package has arrived and they go shuffle a couple of packages around and then tell us it's not there. I've had to present tracking info on multiple occasions to get them to do more than a cursory glance. Then...we have had some AMAZING experiences at the post office. A postal worker in Mackinaw City Michigan went above and beyond to help us out when some important documents didn't arrive before we left the area. Another one was so kind to give us a general delivery package on a saturday even though the office was closed but she was there sorting mail. Like anything - some people treat you like people - others like an inconvenience. -J
@@OpenRoading It makes my skin crawl that one office tried to Charge you for the service. That person needs to be fired. I'm convinced the current Postmaster General was hired to dismantle the Postal Service. He dropped delivery standards we used to live and breath by. So sad. The next time you get bad service, ask to talk to the postmaster. If I had been in an office you visited, you'd want to take me to lunch 😁. It's good for the heart to be kind to people. Side note: Idaho is one of the few states that taxes (6%) groceries. We are fighting this, but getting nothing but pushback.
I didn't think groceries were all that more expensive in Alaska. What is more expensive (especially in Canada) is fuel. Weighing down your rig is going to cost you fuel mileage. We also struggled to find fresh water in AK. Many of the state parks had warning signs to boil water first. We did end up having to pay to fill up twice and bought gallon jugs from the store.
I think what happened with Trinity this time is that you took Cody with you when you left, so she was scared you weren't coming back. Since she was abandoned before, she has fear of abandonment and a bit of separation anxiety. One thing that might help calm her when you are gone is a KONG Classic Stuffable Dog Toy. You can fill it with peanut butter (if you have any, ha ha) and it will keep her busy and occupied while you are gone, distracting her from her stress. I'm a new fan ~ just discovered you guys last week and love your personalities and charisma. I was sold when you adopted an abandoned dog! I've been working my way back through your old videos and look forward to seeing what's next!
You know...this is the first time someone mentioned taking Cody where it made sense to me. I was like "What does Cody matter to Trin...they don't hang out together much." But I could totally see that. I still am leaning in to us being dumb for just leaving the napkins on the floor. 😂 But who knows - maybe we inadvertently saved a couch cushion or a shoe. -J
For sure for sure! But there are a total of 9 Walmarts in Alaska... Since we'll be rural most of the time I'm pretty sure we're gonna come out on top financially with this one. -J
… All foods brought into Canada for personal use have limits, such as 20 kg or 20 L for meat, cheese, cookies, bread, fruits, and vegetables. However, there are some exceptions. For example, you can bring up to 20 kg of dairy products, 2 dozen eggs, and 20 kg of spices, tea, and coffee.
You were definitely smart stocking up...although... that is a lot of peanut butter! Lol I'm interested in the cost comparison between the costs in this video and Alaska...or anywhere in Canada.

Thank you so much. I think of all the kind words we've received the people who tell us that they are literally looking for our video on Friday night means the most. 🤗 What incredible kind encouragement. Thank you. -J

@@mikepetet111 Yeah...they didn't have our less sugary jelly there. So we had to grab that at walmart. Then we forgot to. LOL -J
It's easily 15% higher for groceries in Alaska.
People.... if you shop Costco, Walmart... prices are pretty similar to lower 48.
I'm honestly not sure how much effect 300lbs or so is going to have on fuel.
Hahaha. I love this. -J
Poor Trinity, she had separation anxiety, because you left her alone. I am so glad you handled napkin gate so well.
It was so weird because she's NEVER had an issue. We've been gone for longer. I think something triggered her OR she just saw the napkins and was like "HEY! Present for me!?" 😂 -J
I think she was worried about her emotional support rabbit 😂
She was setting you up to do a sponsorship ad for BetterHelp, but you missed the hint. ;)
@@drinkinslim haha - better help for pups. -J
We learned our lesson....no years supply of napkins left within reach ever again.... 😂 -J
My Churri (8 month old kitten). Loves napkins, Kleenex and toilet paper not only does he love to tear it up and spread it all over the RV. He likes to eat it. Of course the tpaper is for my black tank so it will dissolve readily. I hope.
@@cynthiaogrey4330 I would guess it gets pooped right out! :-)
For the record you can use water wipes brand baby wipes on dogs for in between real baths especially for cleaning doggy faces 😇🐾
We should get a truck load. -J
Couldn’t survive without our wipes. Great suggestion.
It's like "Hey... good you're back can we go for a walk now?" as opposed to "YOUR BACK YOUR BACK YOUR BACK!!!" 😂
Part of me thinks she just got bored.....

We always shop in Canada when traveling there. The exchange rate makes it no more expensive and we get much better food quality wise.
Nice. We stocked up mostly on stuff that we know we use a lot of and aren't sure whether or not our favorites (cough jif cough) are available. We also are RURAL almost all the time. Rural is always more expensive. -J
You should try Kraft peanut butter in Canada!
But the sole border agent, three weeks after labor day, looked up at us and said "Just make sure to eat them on the boat and don't bring them next time."
It's a pleasure to meet a real human being!

In all honesty we've left her for longer.

Thankfully this time I don't need a refund. But still an annoying process for sure! -J
I always forget to put a chew toy out because she generally pays zero attention to them. But I will get it out there next time! And keep the napkins OFF the floor. 😂 -J

I'm betting she was still feeling a bit worn out since she's still recovering from her surgery and the uterine infection and that's why she wanted to sleep in. I hear ya about saying that there would be no dogs on the bed. We made about 4 months before my guy ended up on the bed. Lol. If you want to see a eagles nest, we have one in our yard on a lake close to the town Wasilla, and we would love to share it with you, and would have you boondock in our yard so you could enjoy it. Just remember, as wonderful Alaska is, Canada also has some very cool sightseeing also.

Should have waited on the windshield replacement . You'll probably get a crack or two by the time you get to Alaska .
Not that I follow every law on the book...but it's illegal to drive with a crack as large as ours and it was expanding daily. Better to get it taken care of than give a police officer something to give us a 24 hour repair notice for.

I'll see if Kalyn wants to start putting GPS in the descriptions.

In Pecos, TX after we got our first general delivery they said any future one was going to cost us $10.
@@danablakeslee8515 Oh nice. We stocked up in a state where we got taxed for groceries....we're borderline geniuses over here. LOL -J
Good to know! I doubt the groceries will affect our fuel milage much. Just like adding 1 extra person or 2 in the truck. -J
I was like "What does Cody matter to Trin...they don't hang out together much." All foods brought into Canada for personal use have limits, such as 20 kg or 20 L for meat, cheese, cookies, bread, fruits, and vegetables. However, there are some exceptions. For example, you can bring up to 20 kg of dairy products, 2 dozen eggs, and 20 kg of spices, tea, and coffee.
