Why do all car mount reviewers drive BMW’s 🤣
Because bmw car mounts suck!!
@@TommyLGarage was expecting a BMW fanboy response, am not disappointed :)
writeoff
Unscrew the usb and put the whole thing behind the panel!
I was going to say the same
@@Booom_ me too
I don‘t understand 🤷🏻♂️
@@christiankrob8043 you don’t understand to open up the panel that the usb is plugged into and take out the usb part and put the whole thing behind the panel unseen?
samantha farmer you mean behind the BMW panel?
Thank you for this video! Much appreciated. I just ordered some parts to make my own.
You will love it!!
This was an excellent use of common sense! Love how you did this Bud!
Thanks!!
It’s 2021. What is this common sense you speak of. It sounds like alien technology
Thanks for this! Will give it a go
Let me know how it goes
Thank you-this preserves my favorite formerly magnetic mount for another generation of iPhone. Affiliate links helpful and I ordered with one of them.
I’m glad it helped!!
I did something similar to this, I put a popsocket on my charger since I already had the popsocket car mount. Works beautifully.
Nice !!
Me too. Works beautifully
You put the pop socket on the back of the MagSafe charger and it works perfectly?
I may have to try this.
Awesome.
I don’t get it
Worked like a charm - I have a rectangular WixGear magnet vent mount I use on my BMW X3 with my Iphone 12 Pro Max/Apple leather case (loved the mount but since I upgraded to magsafe phone/case I had to insert the magnet strip at bottom of case so it was not that strong and in a strange place....plus hate having to cord up all the time), took out the magnets from inside the mount, used some 2 sided gorilla mounting tape I had lying around and it is perfect. Thanks!
That’s so awsome to hear!!!
You deserve a lot more subs, best F80 how to and installs on youtube!
Thank you!!
Good solution. I have Scosche mount. MagSafe sticks pretty good and holds my mini and my friend’s Max.
This very helpful! I just picked up a 12 pro max and was wondering if I could use the MagSafe charger with my Rennline phone mount
Hope this helps!!
Very good idea but there is few things to consider on
Many of the cars can’t supply 18W over usb port
Also belkins car mount has stronger magnets which is better when there is a speed bump or kind of things
And the last thing is I would never prefer cutting and soldering an mfi certificated cable because it could may cause error message on iPhone and stop charging
I'd love to design a 3D printed MagSafe holder for the car but I haven't gotten it yet
Oh and by the way thank you for the heads up about the Belkin one not charging your iPhone. It doesn’t make it very clear. I nearly bought one as well lol.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks! I was surprised about the Belkin
Nice video!! But i have no space to stick the universal mount in my car..How did you fix that i see its somehow sticking out? That metal round thing?
“Rub it on the ground”
Bust your knuckle clean off 😂
haha
The minute I seen this MagSafe stuff announced I wondered if this would work. Was worried magnet would not be strong enough to hold while driving. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be 3m taping mine to a ram mount.
Let me know how you made out !
Very very helpful tip. I prob make my own but for right now my already existing wireless charging car mount is good enough. Lol mine opens the arms when it notices my phone near to dock lol
Nice work Tommy. Good to have videos on Sundays again
Thanks!!
That is fantastic! Do you have video on how to install that ball mount behind the head unit please?
here you go: bit.ly/3low7sV
Great tutorial - what is the ball you are using in your setup? It seems to connect with a very small footprint on the dash.
Rennline
Nice solution. Except you went through all the trouble of removing the magnet from the mount and gluing the magsafe to it, then you plugged it into a USB-A port, which does not deliver enough power to charge through magsafe at full strength anyway. It tops out at 12w at best, which means you are getting probably 7.5w charging. You need 18w or 20w adapter which only USB-C can deliver to charge the phone at 15w. You can buy these adapters to plug into your lighter, but it won't look quite as clean as your setup. Still a very nice hack. I have a magic-mount in my car. I just stuck the metal plate from the magicmount on the back of the magsafe and put it on there. Works great. I am also probably not getting full charge because of the extra magnet, as you said. But it works and took 20 seconds to install. Using an Anker usb-c car adapter to plug it into.
Thanks for commenting. I did this to have an OEM/Apple looking mount, but I totally understand and agree with your comment. I might look into these adapters.
Will it hold the iPhone 14 pro max on bumpy roads?
Great hack! But the usb adaptor you used/linked to as well as all others I can find all state they don’t work with magsafe chargers since they don’t allow 20v. Some say it starts to charge, but then stops/starts over and over, ultimately draining the battery. Did it work for you long term? Thanks.
Yes - works like a charm!
Same problem
Awesome and simple.
I appreciate you sharing this.
Thanks for watching!!!
Please do one on the belkin. Was gonna buy one before I saw this video because I also thought it was a MagSafe charger. Really like the video though!
Thanks! Working on the Belkin this week hopefully
Wow actually an extremely practical, well executed hack - something rare on RUclips 😅
Thank you!!
@@TommyLGarage Nice DIY. But I would rather buy ProClip magsafe holder(It just holds Apple magsafe charger) and mount specially made for my car. Plus, I would not remove the charger unlessI sell or scrapping it. So I would rather make another cigar jack near fuse box and connect ther charger and cables there.
Hey there, great video I did the same thing in my Acura I skip the ball part and just 3M rigid Velcro right to the dash rocksolid over bumps and everything didn’t plug it into the USB. I got a usb-C charger higher wattage for fast charge from Amazon. It’s amazing. to me it seems all the ball options phone still vibrates or bounces a little with road conditions or Music with bass Ya mean
Mine doesn’t seem to vibrate but I never play music hehe
@@TommyLGarage How does the MagSafe hold up in the long term? I am worry that the MagSafe will break easily under constant 120 Fahrenheit inside the car.
Nice job! But does your previous magnetic mount works well with the iPhone 12?
Nope. The magnetic mount wont hold the 12. Unless you glue a metal plate to it
Awesome idea! What do you use for CarPlay? I would love to try this idea out but then I would have to use another cable for CarPlay which wouldn’t be good to have 2 different charging sources.
I use car play for maps and text messages
I have an IPad Air Pro and I want to do a car mount similar to like yours. Can you give me some tips for it. I tried the cup holder mounts but they sit to low that it be dangerous to view the IPad for driving. I'm using Ipad for Uber instead of the phone.
Brilliantly explained process! I also have an F series BMW. What is the clip/ call you are using in your dashboard?
It’s a Rennline clip
@@TommyLGarage where did you buy the Rennline clip from?
MrEvltwn their website. Look under 3 series
Such a great solution - I keep looking for an inexpensive holder for the Apple MagSafe -but I wanted to fit it to a CD-Slot holder. I found a scosche magic mount CD-Slot kit for 10 bucks and just ordered my magsafe puck from Apple. I might just get the amazon holder you linked to and attach that to an older CD-Slot mount from iOttie I have laying around - either way thanks for the perfect idea!
Good call!!!
Great job as usual Tommy
Thanks!!
Where i can buy the little metallic ball attachment you mounted on the side of your radio? I have an F30 and it would perfectly fit in my car since i hate glueing something into my car!
Rennline. Only for certain makes and models. I think you’re in luck. 3-series are listed.
did you finally find it or not?
here it is: bit.ly/3low7sV
Hey Tommy! Great vid per usual! Are u using the Renline phone mount bracket? If so, do u know if the Renline magnet holds ur iPhone 12 on its own? Also, is ur phone the 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max? Cheers!
Same question
Rennline magnet won’t hold it. And it’s a 12 pro max
Wow you did a great job. U just saved me $$ for MagSafe car mount. That looks great in the car as well apart from the long cable.
Thanks!!!
You are a genius, my friend!
The thing is, in order to get “full” 15w of MagSafe charging, you need the 20w USB-C charger. Even that, I used a meter to see it is at around 12w. So the car USB port is at most 12w and you “convert” usb-c to usb-a. Phone probably charging at 7.5w like all the Qi wireless charger (your old one)
I did it for the looks alone
Nice video, how did your car have the usb port in the hidden compartment?? do you have the video for how the wire run?
It came with my car. Part of executive package. But you can route it to the cigarette lighter
I though your first setup was clean but your Magsafe setup is even better. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!!
Any car vent phone mount that would work just like your dashboard mount? Thanks. Awesome video too.
For the most part
very nice, i also bought the belkin mount thought the same that it was charger too, but belkin the mount it self works great.
But it’s massive
The second I saw MagSafe, the first thing I thought of was how to mount it. I’m gonna be putting mine on my headboard.
Good idea !
I put mine on my headboard first day and I love it.
Share when you do please
I did the same as you but instead of having the usb plug sticking out of the dash, I took the panel off like you and then also removed the bmw usb connector from the panel and hid it behind. Looks a lot neater now 😄
Good idea !!!
You’re a saint. I just did this with my camera. Expecting the 14 pro this Friday. The only thing I changed was I used the extra tape that came with the mount as support.
Glad it worked !!
@@TommyLGarage Update; Got my 14pro and the phone stayed on the mount. Thanks again.
Great idea Im onto it
Thanks !!
Great video. Thanks for making it
Thanks for watching !!
I’ve been considering this since launch, thanks for being the guinea pig. Not used car enough due covid so was going to create similar when I can justify another £40 on a second MagSafe charger. I have USB C socket (VW) though not sure of watts. My idea was use holesaw to fit MagSafe in to a frame. But your idea is cheaper (I too collect random car charger spares😂)
Good job
Great video! Where did you get the original ball head mount? Looks metal almost and like it’s clipped in behind the fascia of the head unit? That’s what I’m after, I hate vent clips and want something like what you’ve got or what Proclip does with their products
Thanks. It was made by rennline
I like this solution vs the Belkin as you don't block the AC vent.
I agree!
Btw some company’s do sell some that charge with MagSafe but the one my mom got only works with the phone on its own or an Apple case third party MagSafe cases don’t work
thanks for the video , did it yesterday works great !!!
Glad to hear!
Wondering if the mag safe magnet is strong especially over pumps
Yes! I posted a clip at the end of the video. I’ve driven with it all weekend and not once did it fall off
It will fall 100%.
@@harifiarz I live in a city so you know there hella pumps all over the place but I’m guess it would fall if I hid them at like 15mph
Hi Tommy. So how is your experience with this setup a couple months down the road. Does the phone stick well enough to the MagSafe? Did it ever come loose driving over bumps or bad roads? Considering sth similar for my Z3. Very useful video btw. Thanks
Love it and use it all the time. Zero issues. Really cannot praise it highly enough.
Yea I have issues getting the magsafe to properly hold an iPhone 13pro max over rapidly changing surfaces
@@PwnzTube no issues whatsoever with my iPhone 12 mini. Never fell of the magsafe holder, even driving over rough roads. My phone is only 135g while yours is 240g. Maybe that's what makes the difference?
I'm using an OEM magsafe case btw.
Great instructional video !
Thanks!!!
Very good idea, thanks!
Thanks!
Doing this tomorrow in my 335i. Luckily I have a charge port under the dash board on the passenger side so I should be able to achieve a no wire look. Thanks for the idea!!!!
Good to hear! Did it work?
@@TommyLGarage like a charm! I finally have the perfect hold/charge solution for my BMW. I'm installing carplay next week, wish me luck!
What strikes me. Curious is the ball mount that you used. I missed the video of that creation. I too would like to place a more OEM mount in my vehicle and may have to create as opposed to not. Thank (Gracias) you in advance!!
I linked it in the video description :)
Fantastic and simple solution! Congrats 👏👏
Thanks !!
I did the same last week, unfortunately the iPhone without the case - magnetic force is much weaker and it won’t hold up driving around. With the official case and it’s totally fine.
Mine has no issues at all
Wow that’s a clean way of getting MagSafe wireless charging ! Btw, what’s the name of the first phone holder (the one that grab the phone with arms) ?
Thanks! Sorry no idea. I found it on Amazon but it’s no longer sold
Hey Tommy how is the charge rate been ? Is it fast or does it just maintain battery levels? Also is it CarPlay compatible.
Fast, maintains and works with CarPlay. I love it
Sublime!! Amo las recomendaciones tan buenas como esta. Good Job Sir!!!
This is what I had in mind also I knew it would be possible. Belkin can hit the bricks since they have no interest in charging they said in their faq.
I wish Apple made it. But now I’ve come to find out that hacking it is super easy
Well i am using CarPlay with charging
No need to wireless charging.
Im happy with belkin car holder for iphone12promax
Never thought about that. That make more sense that to double charge!
I was too but this is helpful for people like me who uses a wireless CarPlay adapter.
Brilliant video. This is exactly what I have done. Just a quick one, does the USB C to A converter not limit the capacity of you cars USB output? Just checking as I’ve been looking to get one for my ANKER 12v car charger? Thanks for the vid, keep it up. *****
Thanks for the love!
@@TommyLGarage Anytime Tommy! Keep it up.
Great Video thank you
Thanks for watching!
Couple questions. First how fast does it charge? Second what clip do you use for the on dash ball
1. Wireless Charging
2. Rennline Mount
Thank you
Love this solution! Did this exact same thing on my 2018 F80. I have a quick question though. I don't have the usb port like you so I ended up getting an adapter to the cig port. Can I leave the adapter plugged in all the time or will this drain the battery? Will I have to constantly take out the adapter when I turn off the car?
You can keep it in no problem!
@@TommyLGarage Thanks! So when I leave it plugged in and turn off the car, the adapter light remains on. Is that OK?
It will turn off after about 15-20 min. I have the same thing with my radar detector
@@TommyLGarage Thanks for the quick reply! Been watching your videos since you bought your F80! Big fan!
Thank you!!!!
I would be worried about the rate of charge. I actually ordered one from ESR off Amazon, however if the ball size is the same as my current cup holder mount I had for my previous Android I may use your tip to mount it there if the vent clip doesn’t work out. I won’t get the MagSafe animation( which I’m jealous of:) ) but it’ll charge it fine. Doing food delivery on multiple apps so it’ll suck some juice
It charges fine. It works great
Did you ever cut and shorten the cable? I’m thinking about doing it but wasn’t sure if it was as easy as cut to desired length then solder wires back together?
Yes it’s easy but I never did it. Just ticked them in
how did it hold on the drive?
Awesome setup. I'm gonna try to do the same thing. Thanks
Thanks for watching !!
Great idea!
Thanks!!
So y’all I bought the mag safe charger and did this, yes it does hold your phone pretty well over bumps. I personally attached the MagSafe puck with Velcro so I can take it off and use it at home with my 20w brick
Good idea !!
@@TommyLGarage I also put Velcro on the back of my iPad Pro and mounted it to the area where my radio is #faketesla #Fesla , to all my fellow Scion tC owners it’s easy just put Velcro on that sliding door for the radio and connect it to aux !
Did you consider the Pitaka Qi charger? I use it with the Rennline bracket.
I did but I wanted something oem
Don’t forget to do a Launch Control too.. :)
And What Samantha down here said 👏🏽
This is a great idea thanks for the tip!
Do you not have a 12v socket? If you buy a 20w PD usb 12v socket, you can utilise the 15W wireless charging offered by MagSafe. Even though using the direct USB port is a more ‘cleaner’ solution
lmaoo the ad on this video was of a product that had this concept but like an actual manufactured one. Smart think nonetheless. great video
Haha so funny !
Cool vid dude also if u don't want to cut the cable you can wrap it around the mount base until it's at desired length
Good idea!!
Do you have to purchase the car mount or can you purchase that small part separately to attach to the wiz gear magnetic mount that you listed from Amazon?
You can purchase them separately
This is the kind of stuff I love to watch 👍
Thank you!!
Great idea thanks
Glad you liked it!!
I am working on something like this. The problem with your solution is the output of that USB port. I am going to hardwire a USB-C port behind that same panel and run the USB-C cable behind that panel as well.
What is that ball mount you have on the edge of your dash display area? Where did you get it and how is it installed?
It’s made by Rennline
I like your solution our car has a odd shaped dash a vent mounts just block heat an A/c . Bad idea . One question have u tried many other aftermarket holders with built in MagSafe charging an did they give the apple Newer charging animation I have an iPhone 11 I wasn’t even aware there was such an animation but with the newer mag safe cases I would like to upgrade and change car set up excellent video thanks for your help
I tried a few. This one is superior!
Tom question your mid pipe is passing smog test? Thanks
Not sure. Haven’t had a chance to test. Car is good till 2022
Why dont you use the first charger/car mount (the black one at first of the video)? And can you link this one?
Why did you build your own car mount the first one looks great
I wanted Apple-specific charger
I plan to buy one of those mount with the 3m to put it above my bed.
Now that is an idea !!!
Is the magnetic bound strong enough for the phone to stay in place while you drive?
Never
Is there a rotary phone car mount?
A Heated Mess yes. Most people mount them in their barns lol
Cool idea but how many watts would it charge at since it’s not connected to the recommended power block ?
About 3.5. Edit still pretty quick charging on the phone chargers even if you are using GPS
Hi Tommy, do you have wireless CarPlay or it’s the MagSafe transferring the CarPlay?
I have wireless car play
Absolutely genius!!!
Thank you!
Looks good !
Thanks!!
Where can you buy that metal ball mount? Thats smart, I dislike the vent mounts, but that seems legit.
here you go: bit.ly/3low7sV
Funny enough, Belkin has _finally_ come out with an Apple-blessed MagSafe mount. Funny enough, this still is not only probably cheaper but also better (if you don't want it on your vents). I happen to have an old ProClip mount for my TTRS, which may work well with this that I can probably easily adapt a ball mount to. That said: How's that OEM MagSafe magnetic connection working for you day-to-day? Does it still seem to hold well for you? Looks like a sporty car, so presumably the suspension is firm so you have a chance to really test its holding power. 😅
Please do a video on the belkin!
Working on it
Can you use apple car play with the magsafe
