The Growing Problem of Video Game File Size
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 июл 2024
- Games get bigger over time. With better technology and higher quality comes heftier file sizes. Some games, such as Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redemption 2, Destiny 2, and Gears of War 4 have crossed the 100 GB boundary. But how big is too big? And what can be done about it?

Devs seem to think hdd space grows on trees and I can't stand it
It kinda does, I can just buy another hard drive if I run out of space
@@brandonwombacher2559 you can but not everyone has the income to do that depending on where they live so developers should respect the hard drive space of people buying their games
@@brandonwombacher2559 Welp, SSD price for 1 TB is like one modern smartphone.
All I can say is that I still walk with phone from 2013 just to buy 22 GB ram to my laptop.
Modern games dont even run well on SSDs, especially open world games
sure? I think they all require SSD by now.
I got ark survival evolved and was shook to find it was 110 gb. It then needed another 17 gb update or something, so I just uninstalled it.
With all dlc's it's 270+ gb...
i play ark with the four og custom dlc maps (ragnarok, valguero, crystal isles, the center), and have multiple mods installed too. file size is 250+ gigabytes lol. it's worth it, just recommend giving ark it's own 512 gb to 1tb, i've heard that ark got up to 600+ gb for some people, and i honestly can't fathom how it's so badly optimized for storage lol
@@iver8321 Holy Cow😳. That's 1/4 of a Terabyte for 1 Game.
@@brandonwombacher2559 Bruh at this moment it’s at 430 gb💀
@@iver8321 that is to darn big man.😳
Why isnt hd textures optional? I have a 1080p monitor, why am I downloading 4k textures??
Greedy company bro 🤣 believe me they do it purpose
That's one of the reasons why I'm still gaming on 7th Gen consoles, didn't jump yet to the 8th with a PS4 or an XOne, physical games are incomplete and storage/file sizes is a messy thing, I don't want to live through a cycle of Install Game -> Install Patches -> Play -> Delete, when I want to replay my favorite games...
I was on ps3 for the longest time. But i moved to ps4 for some games i really wanted to play (Inside, Shadow of the colossus and From soft games for example) and for some ps3 games that looked a lot better on ps4. Now i have a permanently installed collection of about 25 games on a 1tb ssd in my ps4 pro. I don't need any more games as these were all that i was interested in. So i won't have to delete any of them to make room. If you'd buy a 2 tb ssd then you will definitely have enough room for all the best games on ps4.
I just don't buy games that are bigger than 60GB. They are too slow to download, too slow to load, and take up too much space.
I buy games not more than 5 gb size.
For me it 75gb is okay but beyond that it's takes too long to install Doom eternal takes 6 hours oh God I wanted die
you guys buy ?
Remember when you could put Halo Reach or GTA V on your Xbox 360 and there was no need to install itto the console, just put the disc and play that quick? Yeah, I miss that too.
Ps: Id Software managed to reduce Doom Eternal's file size to almost 65 gb? Yeah, COD has to learn that from Bethesda and Id
Even if you did have to install, it was only for updates and they were short as hell
@@aarushlal3702 Yeah
Like, sometimes you had the install disc but it never took too long. Now you have to install, wait for updates for multiplayer and then wait for finalization. Geez
The one advantage consoles had over PC. physical game copies on disk. You can burn game files onto a DVD and label it, but it's not the same and DRM/steam might not let you play that way.
Usually click on video by watching it's views. But this time I click your video because I knew sometimes best creators remains underrated. You prove me here right!
Love your video and explanation. I think I don't have to watch another video on this topic now 😊
Keep making this type of *quality* content. Good day.
First video in and I can already say that your channel is HELLA underrated. Can't wait to see you grow fam! Keep it up!
Thank you!
I hate this trend, I loved when games weight between 20 and 30G or less, that why now I go more for the indie games sphere, the games aren't that larges and sometimes are better than the AAA games.
Just found your channel and enjoyed your DMCV video. You make good content, hope to see your channel grow.
Thank you, I appreciate your encouragement.
I made a whole separate volume just for my one GTA V game. It's annoying how big the file size is
90 gb for GTA 5 , 122 gb for red Dead 2 and 90 GB for Doom eternal 😭😭😭😭
I played old games most of my adult life, and my teenage life, I didn't known about sdd till I had my new computer and I finally could play games like GTA V and The Witcher 3, among others, sdd can be a pain.
*Excelente vídeo!* (see, a small size commentary)
This is why I prefer ancient, cheap or free games like Skullgirls, Doom 2, etc. though I did make an exception for SF6 if only to support Capcom’s other franchises.
Arcade game that still survive like fighting game
i see what you did there, with the video title *growing*
The age of the indie game has truly begun.
Can we just stick with HD textures ? smh I hate these file sizes
Once again Nintendo was right all along. Cartridges are the future of physical media. They're smaller, sturdier and load games instantly.
For modern multiplayer game so much of that space are going to be cosmetics -- cosemtics that you don't even own.
For other players to be able to show off their bling, you need to install the _entirety_ of the cosmetix store, including stuff that isn't even available anymore like preorder bonuses, just so they can tease you with it. And _you_ have to pay for the space.
Someday... 1tb videogame.
My internet speed: YOUR GAME WILL BE READY IN... 3 MONTHS
Forza Horizon IV took 7 hrs for me to download.
100 gb for ONE game is the point where it gets ridiculous.
It doesn’t help that the consoles hard drive is 1tb max.
6:54 i wish cod would do this
It's not going to happen, but... games on SSD cartriges XD.
what exactly do you think the switch uses? and the 3ds before that, and the ds before that. Its flash storage on a chip, which is pretty much the same thing as an ssd cart, just not as fast.
I only installed 262GB cod warzone to my xbox ss and I don’t have space for other games
Sucker Punch actually cares.
Well, it’s not that surprising. It’s pretty obvious because: 1. "The more complex it is, the larger file size tends to be." 2. More updates and patches always get more storage.
give this games just by size
Well 2023 and new consoles by default do not have that much storage PS5 668GB and XSX 825Gb for user files.
And games are in 3 digit sizes.
Thank god the prices of NVME SSD's has dropped. They still aren't matching the prices of HDD's, but they're much more obtainable in 2023, than they were in 2020-2021.
Cod warzone is 110 GB alone.
Part of the excessive size of games is probably due to stock engines used by the developers already being big.
nice video, i fucking hate it, im just downloading nba 2k24 and see it at 150gb, what fucking for??? its a simple sports game... if they were consumer friendly, stuff like 4k textures would be optional, perhaps they could have an optional download for the multiplayer part of the game as not all of us play such a game for multiplayer, but anyway, it'll take me 15 hrs to download it with my 30mbps download speed xd i just dont bother playing games over 50gb but well, sometimes im too hyped about it and just go for it :D thank god i have a 4tb hdd, i'd struggle to keep up with 1tb nvme ssd
I wish i am born in a first world country
All what I have to say is buy a big external hard drive or ssd and have a lot of patience waiting for large games to download.🙄
Not everyone wants to buy something extra to play an game
