Gaming's Optimism in the Early 2000s

  • What happened to gaming? How were things, say, 20 years ago? This is a topic that I think about a lot because gaming as of recently has felt more and more soulless. It's not just nostalgia talking, either. There are a lot of genuine reasons that the games industry has fallen and continues to go down. I hope it ends soon, man. I'm getting tired of publishers treating us like animals. Also, you may have spotted some favoritism towards the PS2, which is because it was the console I have the most experience with, as well as it being the most successful in the 6th generation.
I know this is something different than I usually do, but video essays are something I've been trying to put out since summer of 2019. Each time I'd start one and have a huge amount of ideas and then it'd just fall apart. I didn't stick to anything, but now that's changed. Hopefully, it's something I can do more of since I really enjoy making them and putting my thoughts out there. I'm still trying to get used to doing this type of video and getting used to my voice on video but I'm making progress :D
But what do YOU think? Was everything too fast? More jokes? Less jokes? Also, thank you for watching, I really mean that. I put a lot of effort into this video and I hope I can bring more of my thoughts to you. Keep being awesome guys.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure western culture as a whole absolutely peaked from the late 80s to mid 2000s. Gaming is a perfect example for this.

DLC was at its worst during the 360/PS3 era, when companies would charge you for cosmetics that, in all bluntness, should've been in the base game - series like Borderlands and LittleBigPlanet were _especially_ guilty of this. Nowadays, I think most everyone realized that the right way to do DLC is to take a page out of Old PC Gaming's book and make expansions that are essentially Discounted Additional Games that wouldn't have made sense as a full release.

It's pretty cute that you included the Sega Dreamcast. It was very ahead of the curve, but lost too much prior to them even developing it.
Shame it basically died as the next generation was just about to start for the rest of the industry.

I really enjoy this style of video. I hope you make more. Regarding the topic, I think that you have a point. Nostalgia is certainly a part of it but the industry is much bigger and more mature nowadays. More money involved, more risk and therefore less room for experimentation.

I dont disagree with a lot of your points, but i think you're a bit jaded and cynical about modern gaming.
There's still tons of great, fresh, creative video games--even by 1st party studios.
People still go to midnight game releases. I attended the midnight launch of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom just last May.

Back then there were original IP's way more than sequels. Also there was quality over quantity. Nowadays we have nothing but remakes, remasters, sequels and DLC and season passes. Plus patches of 10gb and up. And let's not forget today's games stories are now full of woke crap. Yeah yesterday's games were better with story telling, character designs, gameplay and above all content lots and lots of content. Specially with the PS2 era.
