I lucked out and snagged a copy of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Dragon Ball Z: Sparkling Meteor 3 at a Walmart around 2008 or 2009. I also got a copy of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns/R at a flea market two years prior like literally a month or two after it got released in the NTSB-U market for like $USD 8. (I also got Rogue Galaxy, Final Fantasy XII, Wild Arms 3, La Pucelle: Tactics, as well as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparkling Meteor 1 and 2, and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 for sub $USD 10 prices as well, among quite a few other video game titles. Flea markets are gold mines for retro video games, and that also holds true even for imported/fan made translated games, as well).

my best bargain bin find for the PS2 was Scaler. I only paid 5 dollars for it and it's unironically a fun platformer. The worlds are colorful and interesting, the music is catchy and great, about the only bad thing is the gameplay does not change much from the early game to the endgame, except for those transformations you get which change up the core gameplay. my favorite level in this game is Desollem, the one where you do races. the music is kickass

I don't remember the PS2 Slim ever giving me issues, but then again I didn't use ot for very long, as I eventually got the new consoles about a year later. The original 'phat' PS2 though.... not so much. 'Disc Rear Error' will forever be burned in my mind. I do recall a means of temporarily 'fixing' it, by carefully opening up the console and turning a little nob, but later PS2 models seemed to be 'unfuxable', as a friend of mine asked me to fix his and the innards looked really different.
I guess it still wasn't nearly as bad as the 'phat' PS3, which was guaranteed to break - for good -once you got the infamous Yellow Light of Death.

Even Persona 5 was originally released in Japan in 2016 for the PS3 when the PS4 had been out for a few years, when it was localized in North America in 2017 it was released on the PS4. Yeah Raidou 2 has pre-rendered backgrounds but it had a great atmosphere and great gameplay, if you like 1900's Japan like Great Ace Attorney, Disgaea 7 or Like A Dragon Ishin definitely check it out. Yuke's run on PS2 between their WWE and Def Jam games was incredibly strong, plus the power of the PS2 kept back ports coming for five years after the PS2 stopped being the main console for WWE games. I Rember buying the gta trilogy ps2 box set from Walmart when I was 10 or something around 2013 and being like "wait you can still buy ps2 games?" the ps2 was a vintage console in my mind at that point especially since it was a little before my time, so I didn't grow up with it. it's my favorite console for sure just because of all the good JRPGS that were on there. the ps1/ps2 era was the best era for JRPGS. also, not all the JRPGS back then had the same bland anime AF art style. something like shadow hearts didn't look anime at all.

Seaman for Dreamcast also came with a microphone--it attached to the controller. 'Hey, You Pikachu' on the N64 came with a mic device attaching to the controller. And we all know the original Famicom had a microphone built into the 2nd player controller; Zelda used it for sure. I imagine there's other examples, but that's off the top of my head. Point being, by then it may still have been rare, but not remotely novel (though they all still worked pretty poorly).

I bought both Mana Khemia 2 and Sakura Wars: So Long My Love for PS2 at retail when they were "new" in North America. I never had a Wii since I wasn't really interested in the gimmick controllers but, even if I had one, I probably would've gotten the PS2 version of Sakura Wars: So Long My Love anyway for the bonus Japanese audio disk, which is the only version I've played.
A couple of other late era PS2 titles I bought when they were new were Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli, Singstar Queen, and, of course, Persona 4.
The most recent sealed PS2 games I bought from online retail in terms of when I bought them were both Capcom Classic Collections disks from Amazon Canada in 2022 (and, yes, these were sold directly by Amazon Canada and not marketplace sellers).

Honestly, sports games are way more enjoyable than many give them credit for, especially back on the PS2. As the generatioks progressed and the engines used shifted, a lot of features were gutted and gameplay was changed so much that both the current and last gen versions would exist in their own ways, neither /necessarily/ better or worse thancthe other in terms of raw gameplay.
