I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
I’m having issues with mine, it’s only a couple months old and has always kinda sputtered unless I warm it up by the instructions on it. Some times that doesn’t help. I’m going to try this adjustment. Thank you
Thanks! My engine was bogging down just like that and you indicated which was the low and high speed jet which is what is not indicated anywhere in the literature. I can't believe the factory makes it so hard to adjust those screws. I didn't drill the tops of the screws. I used a small set of needle-nose pliers to turn them.
Worked perfectly! Cleaned out carb, replaced diaphragm, replaced fuel lines.. did everything but nothing worked! Adjusted my carb just as you described, I used electrical connectors that over the end and now it works perfectly!
Great demo on adjustments! I realize in 2014 the adjustment tools may have not been available.. FYI now in 2019 you can get a set from eBay for less than $10. Thks again
I'm sure others covered this as well but it's an old video with a lot of comments. If you still have one of these and need to adjust the mixture screws, Amazon and others now sell screwdriver sets for this and they are surprisingly cheap. I think the Troybilt are called "pacman" heads. Instead of boogering up the screws, place and order on a Tuesday and get the right tool you'll keep forever by Friday when you are ready to work in the yard. Excellent video and still useful!
About to get a new trimmer after several fix attempts; this fix made my old trimmer run like new!! Had my trimmer for years and ran fine, but this issue started up. Figured that the adjustment screws eventually vibrated to a bad adjustment.
Dang! Great Video! Got my Troy-Bilt Weedeater out which I purchased last year brand new, and it ran good then. I got it out this year about a week & half ago, and it barely cranked up, but would bog down and die. I tried adjusting it, and guess what, I couldn’t even get it to crank up. I jacked with it about a half hour, and said FORGET IT!!!! I came outside today to mow, and really needed to do some weed-eating. So I decided to look up on RUclips, and your video was the first one at top. I watched it, and I luckily had already bought the small D driver which I turned the 1st one: 1&1/2 turns, and the fast speed 1&1/4 turns. It cranked right up on the first pull, and ran better than when it was new! I didn’t have to make any changes at all. First tune, and it ran like a charm! All I got to say is: THANKS!!!! This thang was about to be thrown in the trash! GREAT VIDEO!!!! I give 10 stars ⭐️!!!! 👍🏻
Great video! I thought my Troy Bilt TB22 was junk because it never worked quite right. So I followed your tips and tuned it up! Works great now! Thanks a lot
Great video certainly saved me from buying a new machine. But I found on Amazon a $8 kit that has the appropriate head to adjust the high and low speeds without drilling. Did it in 2 minutes.
I did not know those were adjustable, runs like it should again. Thanks for the vid, I didn't have to smash it to pieces! For me, I ended up using a small hooked pick tool that fit nicely. Thanks again.
They sell adjusting tools. You can get a set of 8 or 10 mixture screw adjusting screwdrivers , all different configurations for any small engine two stroke for under 10.00. No need to hack any mixture screws up. Go on Amazon or ebay.
AFTER I READ AND WATCHED THE VIDEO, BOTH ARE EXCELLENT, FOR THE DIY-ER, I'VE OWNED A TB32EC FOR 2 YEARS, JUST LIKE IT SAYS, NEW OUT OF THE BOX, IT HAD A PROBLEM WITH ACCELL., AFTER I ORD. THE TOOL (PACMAN) ON E-BAY, ($7) I LOOKED @ THE ADJUSTMENTS, NO DRILLING REQUIRED, IF YOU BUY THE TOOL, THE HEAD OF THE ADJUSTMENTS ARE THE SHAPE OF A PACMAN, AND THAT IS THE SHAPE OF THE SPECIAL TOOL.
Another wat to adjust the carb is using a electrical splice straw. find one that fits tight around the screw and turn as needed instead of drilling & potentially ruining the set screw
Or slip a piece of gas line to bring over the jet screws or a simple blue or red wire connector will slip over them snuggly and allow you to adjust them
Found your video today and now that 2015 Trpy-Bilt weed trimmer is a MONSTER! We're at about 800 ft ASL. Slow speed adj about one and one-half turns up from dead bottom. High speed to bottom and then back up until it screams. Well done. How could anyone not like this video?
Just did this on my older 27Cc 2-stroke Troybilt. I did 3/4 on idle and 1 1/4 on hi speed. I live in Calgary so hust under a mile hi. Works like a charm
been sick in bed and watching youtube videos, had this same problem since buying new about 2 years ago. cleaned the gas filter inside the carb and made same adjustment as you said.....runs like a V-8. Thanks
Hello. I have had my trimmer for 2 years dealing with this problem. Never thought to look it up, just dealt with it even though I mow 6 lawns a week. Saw your video by chance and went home and tried this and low and behold my trimmer works great!!!!! Thank you so much for this. Only wish I had watched it sooner!
Thank you Tim Walsh.....From day 1 I had this problem. I even exchanged it the next day for a new one, and it did the same thing. Been putting up with it till it wouldn't even idol. Thanks to YOU and Mykhael Hayes, today I got it to work better than ever. Thanks again.
thanks tim i have had a issues with tb22 running , i had to choke it all the time it git worse with time till the point it would not run even choked on 1 , I drilled out the low high speed screws taped a #4 star in the holes , now after messing with them it run better then new on bad gas
Out of all the carb adjust videos on RUclips, this is the only one that gave me enough info to actually get mine running. Turning both all the way in and then backing out by 1.5 and 1.25 is what I needed to get it running to the point where I could then fine tune it. Thanks!
After reading several articles on poor running weed trimmers, I realized that many men don't know that you can buy carburetor adjustment tools for under $20. The adjustment screws have differents notches for different brands. Most carburetor tool packs come with several tools (or notches). Having the right tool makes the biggest difference when trying to tune up a weed trimmer, chain saw, or other 2 cycle engines. Don't ruin up your trimmer by drilling holes or cutting slits in the adjustment screws.
It worked. Thanks for the video. I had all but given up and was going to buy a new one even though mine wasn't that old. I had even went through carburetor thinking it was gummy from sitting and that did zero for making it run. Thanks
You can get the adjustment tools for the high and low speed needles on the internet. The tool for this model is called the large "D" tool because if you look close the needle is shaped like the letter D. You can buy a whole set of tools for around $25, or just the one you need.
My Troy-Bilt trimmer stalled out on me (out of the box), If you let off the trigger it would choke out instead of idling. Followed your steps with drilling the top of the screws, then I took a small flathead and gently tapped it with a hammer to make a groove to turn the screw. After following your steps on tuning, the thing runs like a champ! Used it with the brushcutter attachment for 30mins and it didn't die out once. Thank you! I was about ready to take it to Goodwill and buy a different one.
Just fixed my unit following these directions. Literally took me longer to get the Dremel and cut wheel out than it took to make a bite in the screws to put a flathead screwdriver to them and adjust the low end. Runs better than it ever did. Thank you!!!
Hell Yeah!! Definitely worked for mine! Bought it as a yard sale for $10 - they said it never ran right for them and I thought i'd take a chance lol I used a small flat blade screwdriver and worked the the pegs around (instead of drilling) and it runs great! easily one of the best $10 bills I've ever spent! This thing looks like it may have only ran for 10 minutes its entire life. Thanks for the video!
Yeah, so adjusting that large screw also worked for me and much more convenient to find a tool for it. The guy at the store told me to adjust using that screw and I told him I just watched this video where the guy was adjusting those two other little screws. He looked at me like I was crazy.
I can't say how many times I've used this clip in the past year. Today was typical. I mowed the yard and then went to trim. Got out the trimmer and the usual. Hard to start and bogs down. Sometimes won't even spin fast enough to activate the clutch. Tried tuning again. Went to get new gas. Cleaned air cleaner. 1 hour later my arm is so sore from pulling the starter cord that I don't even feel like trimming. Came in to see if I could find out anything that might help. I did!!! I threw the Troy Bilt POS in the trash and went down and bought a Husqvarna! Got it together in 5 min. Gassed up. Started first pull. Left it to idle a bit while I went inside to get my headphones figuring it would start up again when I got back out, but no.....still running!!! Went around the front yard flawlessly, smooth and without a problem. Went out back (big yard) and ran out of line. Back to garage to get new line and that was effortless. Nice system of the trimmer head. Went back to back yard to put head back on and WTF...still running!!! When I finished I had to do something I hadn't done since owning the POS TroyBilt...I had to turn it off? I almost had to go back to the manual and look up the kill switch because I hadn't used one in 2 years. I think Husky should have to pay TroyBilt for being the best advertising ever to buy a Husky. The Troy Bilt is a Yugo, the Husky is a starship! Never, ever buy a TroyBilt POS again.
Great info for which carb barrel is low and high speed and how to adjust. I had the exact same problem with a new engine at 750 above sea level. I also found this post that shows how you can turn the screws without drilling out the tops. Adjusting weed eater carb without special tool Using both videos, my troy bilt will now start and idle, plus no special tools bought or damage done to the carb screws. Many thanks!
Man I had a massive issue. I went and got an electric motor instead delt with it for a year. And it burned up on me, so I brought out the weed eater again and did everything. When I got around to this vid it was my last resort and result in life saving success! I can now claim my accomplishment of finishing the yard 100% thank you for such a lifesaving video!!!! I live in Houston and I believe you’re right about the assembly of these weed eaters.
Thanks for your video. I have a different model Troy Bilt weed eater with the same problem. After watching this video I had it working again in under 5 minutes! I couldn't believe it was that simple a fix.
Adjusting the high speed screw until you achieve maximum RPM and leaving it there will result in a too lean carb setting. Since 2 cycle engines depend upon the oil in the fuel for lubrication running too lean causes excessive wear on rings and cylinders and will lead to premature engine failure. The proper procedure is to adjust the high speed screw to maximum RPM and then turn it counter clockwise bit to enrichen the fuel/oil mixture.
Perfect explanation, perfect solution. Video was also very well paced and didn't drone on. Fixed mine with this method. My only comment is drilling into the adjustment screws. That is risky. It is a combination screw/needle valve with a fine pitch thread that is in an aluminum carb. Drilling in the unit is risky - you could over torque and strip the threads in the carb. A user below suggested a blue electrical connector. That worked very well for me. The screws are by no means tight, so you just need some sort of plastic / rubber tube you can shove over the outside of the head and turn it. Turn it completely out then you can hold it in a vice or have someone hold ti with pliers and groove it for a flat head screwdriver with a dremel, or even a hacksaw. (Don't squash the threads.... use wood blocks). Also, when you say "tighten it all the way" if people don't know, this is again a needle valve. So you don't want to really torque it. Think light duty valve, turn it just until it binds with fingertip force, not wrist force. That's "all the way" tight.
I was about to trash mine, even left a bad review on the troy bilt website. Then found this video. Tapped a electrical butt connector on the high end adjustment, opened it up a bit and wallah! I wish I would have realized this a year ago.
I never comment on posts but I have to say this is a really helpful video! I bought my Troy Bilt trimmer a year ago and it has never run properly and recently just started stalling every time I pulled the throttle. I followed these steps and now it runs like a dream! Very happy...thanks for sharing!
Adjusting the low end and high end mixture screws cures a world of issues of bogging or low power on any two stroke chainsaw, trimmer, anything. That said please by the mixture screw adjusting tool! You can get a set of 8 or 10 of them , all different configurations to fit any small engine two stroke carb for under 10.00 on Amazon or Ebay. They are made for this! Do not waste time destroying the mixture screws when you don't have to.
Dude, your fix WORKS! I wonder how many people toss their weed eaters after experiencing this problem?? Not only does it work now. it works BETTER than when I bought it. I'm like 630ft above sea level (Dallas, Tx) and this thing was horribly tuned brand new. It never ran right at full throttle. Now I'm like BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAAAAPPP!!!! This is a pretty good weed eater! /flex Thanks again!
Saw another video where the presenter used blue electrical connector barrel to turn those. Then he took carb out and cut into housing just enough to make grooves in adjuster screws
Thanks for the tip! I tried driling the screws, but it didn't work too well. I had an idea that worked great. I took a hacksaw and cut a groove through the housing and both screws. They are now very easy to turn. I took your advice for adjusting them and now it works great!
Just a side note, like an idiot, I didn't winterize mine and it refused to start. I removed the carb, sprayed it out with brake cleaner, drained the fuel tank. After the carb dried, I reassembled and added fresh fuel. It started up great. Don't use carb cleaner, it's hard on the plastic and rubber parts.
Thank you very much. I was at my wit's end. I change the plug. changed the Gas. I squirted carb cleaner up the fuel intake--which for some reason made it worse. But Knowing which screw was which and which way to turn made the difference. It turns out that my Troy Bilt blower actually does not use the "D" type screws. But I was able to get it to turn by using my REALLY THIN needle nose pliers. I don't think they are jeweler pliers, I think I got them from Radio Shack, but they are really thin. As it was, it took just a quarter turn to solve my problem.
Thank you for your information on these trimmer motors! I've asked around here where I live and no one wants to work on them stating I would be better off to go buy a new one! This solved my problem which was exactly as you stated!
Thank you for the video. I have a TB90BC that I have owned for years. It ran great for the first couple of years, but then would only run at half choke. I replaced all the fuel lines, the filter, and disassembled the carb and cleaned it ,but, to no avail. I found your video yesterday and your fix worked like a charm. Runs great now, thanks.
Just wanted to say thanks. My TB90BC is 6 years old and it was doing the same bogging down when the throttle was revved. I did your procedure and it runs great now! BTW I'm at 1200 ft in the Arkansas Ozarks near the U of A (WPS!!) so where ever they adjust these, it's not at this altitude either. You just saved me $200 by not buying a new one. :)
So glad I found this it totally worked. I tried jacking around with a .22 rifle casing. went right to the small drill bit... Worked it to the side so it was cut out and in inserted a small screw driver Go right to drilling it works
There are special screw drivers made to turn the adjustment screws, available in ANY mower shop, or online. Drilling them like this guy did, has a potential to damage and/jam them, which results in replacing the carburetor.
Yep, the simplest, quickest, and least expensive solution is to use a blue electrical butt splice connector, lightly pound it down over the D shaped air mixture screw (it will form itself around the D shape snugly), then grab your trusty Torx screwdriver (#T25) and push it into the open end of the blue connector, and voila! You have a non slip tool to easily turn the air mixture screws.
Mine sounds better.. I actually messed with the main screw. I live in PA. It was bogging in the begining when I got it, bought a can of 40:1 Briggs & Stratton at lowes. like I said it was bogging, and I was like there's no way with the lever all the way down it sounds like that, it was barley cutting little weeds, then it cut loose when I messed with it a little. Just got this one today. Was going to get the $199.99 but didn't really need a 28 cc for 1/4 acre lawn. I also got the stupid Titanium Force, I think it sucks. Thought it was going to be nice, but it's not, going to go back to the orange stuff. nice video, thanks for sharing. (+1 : 21)
Whoa! Thank you! I was real angry till I saw your video. I am in central Indiana, not sure of the sea level. I used a very small screw driver and was able to move it quarter of a turn . Started perfectly. I hope Troy Built engineered the unit better than they did the adjustment screws.
I just had a TB20CS with very similar symptoms, but it was the reed valve getting knocked out of place by the crank pin. The counterweight on the crankshaft is only laminated plates, and the pin isn't very secure.
well i got 2 of those pos so im gonna try it. Why they would not make an adjustable screw is beyond me, wtf? Wish me luck cause ive about had it with mine.
Thanks, Tim! You just saved me $150+! I've been so frustrated with this stupid thing for the past few weeks and your solution resolved my problem in minutes.
Finally paid attention and applied the fix. Had a piece of steel tubing that I used to make the adjustment tool. Use your imagination. Thank you, works as it should now
This video did the trick for me. I used a small Dremel drill. My machine worked good for two seasons. I wonder if those factory settings change with use. Saved me a trip to the store and some $ thanks
Thank you Tim Walsh! They tried to charge me $75 to do what you just did at the small engine repair place.. I did it myself and it's running like new. And it only took me 10 min to do it. I'd buy you a beer my man.
I had a model older than this one that I love. Great video! I thought my Troy Bilt TB22 was junk because it never worked quite right. So I followed your tips and tuned it up! Works great now! Thanks a lot
used a pair of needle nose pliers and seems to be working now. Thanks.
Great video certainly saved me from buying a new machine. But I found on Amazon a $8 kit that has the appropriate head to adjust the high and low speeds without drilling. Did it in 2 minutes.
I just used a small bladed pair of scissors and worked fine. But the video did help out alot. Didn't understand the altitude part
I did not know those were adjustable, runs like it should again. Thanks for the vid, I didn't have to smash it to pieces! For me, I ended up using a small hooked pick tool that fit nicely. Thanks again.
I bought a set of screw drivers for all the different types of carb adjustment screws
took carb out put it in a vise, used a hacksaw to cut a groove into the 2 screws. Runs like a screaming Demon now. Thanks for the info
you could always buy the choke adjustment tools online
Thanks so much. Its like a new weed eater. Never ran right had to keep choked. This fixed it.
I took a hacksaw to mine to make grooves and now I use a flat head to turn them and it works perfectly..Thank you!
Thumbs Up!
They sell adjusting tools. You can get a set of 8 or 10 mixture screw adjusting screwdrivers , all different configurations for any small engine two stroke for under 10.00. No need to hack any mixture screws up. Go on Amazon or ebay.

A blue colored wire connector fits over the mixture screws very well. $.03
They are tuned lean from the factory for emissions reasons. Most times both screws need to be turned counterclockwise at least 1/4 turn to run right.
Got the same issue I'm getting a tool off Amazon to adjust the carb
Thank you Tim Walsh.....From day 1 I had this problem. I even exchanged it the next day for a new one, and it did the same thing. Been putting up with it till it wouldn't even idol. Thanks to YOU and Mykhael Hayes, today I got it to work better than ever. Thanks again.
Thanks! This procedure worked!
There are special tools, no need to drill any holes.
Yes. But I needed to cut the grass asap and didn't have time bothering with special tools.
thanks tim i have had a issues with tb22 running , i had to choke it all the time it git worse with time till the point it would not run even choked on 1 , I drilled out the low high speed screws taped a #4 star in the holes , now after messing with them it run better then new on bad gas

Worked like a charm! Thank you
I was about to trash mine, even left a bad review on the troy bilt website.
Pac-man carb adjustment screwdriver. Purpose made for this. Cheap too.

Thanks again!
Saw another video where the presenter used blue electrical connector barrel to turn those. Then he took carb out and cut into housing just enough to make grooves in adjuster screws
Thanks Tim, I think there must have been another issue with the carb because I took it back to Lowes and got a replacement and that one works great.
Don't use carb cleaner, it's hard on the plastic and rubber parts.
nice video
Now I know the problem . I live on Mount Everest .
Thanks for posting this video. Fixed my problem.
just saved me a ton of time and money. thanks
Thank you for your information on these trimmer motors! I've asked around here where I live and no one wants to work on them stating I would be better off to go buy a new one! This solved my problem which was exactly as you stated!
Glad I could help Parsons585.
That worked! Thank you!
Brilliant. I was ready to scrap my trimmer even though it was new because the repair would have been more than a replacement. Your video was genius!
So glad I found this it totally worked. I tried jacking around with a .22 rifle casing. went right to the small drill bit... Worked it to the side so it was cut out and in inserted a small screw driver
Go right to drilling it works
There are special screw drivers made to turn the adjustment screws, available in ANY mower shop, or online. Drilling them like this guy did, has a potential to damage and/jam them, which results in replacing the carburetor.
Thanks Tim- followed your directions and now my troybilt runs better than ever!
Did the trick.. Thanks for posting, kept me from tossing a fairly new trimmer into the garbage
use a electrical butt connector to turn the screws
Thanks 4 this awesome tip, I bought a Troy Bilt weed cutter, it work for 1 day and bogg down and after adjusting low speed, it works like a champ....
The initial adjustment you gave was spot on. Just can fine tune from there, but it gets it in the ballpark. Thanks.
Whoa!
Wish me luck cause ive about had it with mine.
well now mine doesnt even start after trying this
both of mine are going in the trash
Thanks, Tim! You just saved me $150+! I've been so frustrated with this stupid thing for the past few weeks and your solution resolved my problem in minutes.
Thanks for your video, I used my Dremal Tool with cutting disk, cut a slot in each and can use a flat blade screw driver to adjust,
Jerry
Same problem I'm having
Finally paid attention and applied the fix. Had a piece of steel tubing that I used to make the adjustment tool. Use your imagination. Thank you, works as it should now
This worked well for my Poulan Pro.
This video did the trick for me. I used a small Dremel drill. My machine worked good for two seasons. I wonder if those factory settings change with use. Saved me a trip to the store and some $ thanks
Glad I know one is low and hi speed. Now if I can just get it to not smoke so bad lol
Thank you Tim Walsh! They tried to charge me $75 to do what you just did at the small engine repair place.. I did it myself and it's running like new. And it only took me 10 min to do it. I'd buy you a beer my man.
Wow thanks. I'm having the exact same issues and will give this a shot. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you sir for this information, I used my trimmer today and it wasn't as it should and this fixed it .
You hit a home run with this video. Worked perfectly, I was frustrated for weeks trying to get mine to work.
Thanks Damon...glad I could help!
