Also a problem with the statement "buy this instead of a Pixel 5" is that it doesn't take into account that the Samsung S20 FE 5G is not at the same price than the Google Pixel 5 on some market (e.g. in France the Samsung is sold 749€ while the Google Pixel 5 is sold at 629€).

The alternative name is the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G "Normy Edition." It's for people who are just tech literate enough to consume content, communicate, and do their work, and don't get a hard-on for an overclocked Qualcomm CPU, 12GB RAM ,and 1TB storage, because they don't fully understand what those things mean, and they are similarish to other phones in this class. Most of them spend a lot of time using social media, so they mostly upload photos, hence keeping the full quality stills camera, and selfies are very popular, hence the better selfie camera. The videos they take are impromptu and up close and get stupid compressed, hence no need for crazy telephoto, sensor arrays, or heavy processing, and they don't really need that much storage because all of it gets backed up to Google Photos, Amazon Photos, Facebook, etc. automatically. Nothing they do really pushes the hardware hard, but the added screen time consumes more power.
@@XDSDDLord actually the S20 FE 5G is for the tech nerd hard on because it has the Snapdragon not the Exynos and the 256GB ROM gets 8GB RAM, and the flat screen which doesn't ruin colours on the edges, smaller hole punch, etc. Australia has been stuck with Exynos for over 5 years and it's gotten worse and worse.

The S20 Forza Edition is a pretty good deal. But i'm gunna be rockin my s10 for a couple more decades.
Edit: I was forced to buy another phone or change numbers and go to another carrier. I now have a Pixel 6
Edit 2: broke my pixel screen and got it repaired just for it to break again. Now i have a Flip 3 and love it. Can't see myself going back to a normal phone any time soon.

@@Jokamutta lawd is that chunky, but the problem is it doesn't sit flush against the device, which means extra stress on the port.
It's in many regards the same and I even like the "glasstic" more than glass. It's not a fingerprint magnet, that's a huge plus for me

Also I'd assume its more prone to just falling off the phone after an impact and paint wearing off or something. Overall difference isn't much except price.

@@zues121510 on iphones you have to transfer all the internals into a new frame+back housing because you cant pull the back glass off. I think all android manufacturers just let you take the back glass off and the replacements are around $40-60

A suggestion, from a camera enthusiast: in reviewing smartphone cameras, I'd love to see more coverage of sensor and pixel SIZE, vs total reliance on the MEGAPIXEL COUNT as a measure of quality. A distinguishing feature of the S20 series, FE included, is the use of a larger front facing camera sensor-- the megapixel count is not greater (12 Mpx) but the sensor about 40% larger then the usual (1/1.74 " and 40 squ. mm vs. 1/2.55" and 25 squ. mm with the Note 10 Plus and S10 series, and most other smartphones). This translates into larger pixels or photosites, increasing the sensor's ability to capture low-light, low noise images. The same principles are at work in the world of regular cameras, where full-frame DSLR cameras with larger sensors are known to be much better in low light than crop sensor or APSC cameras. Some say there is an advantage in dynamic range and color fidelity also. (The sensors in the S20 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra, and also flagship Huawei's are even larger that that in the other S20s: 1/1/33" with nearly 70 squ. mm, which is why they are low-light kings--not because of the high megapixel count!)
Again, with the telephoto lens, there's far more at issue than the megapixel count, which in this case is downright misleading. The reg S20 has 64 Mpx., but relies on DIGITAL zoom, whereas the S20 FE, even though with far fewer megapixels, has true 3x OPTICAL zoom. The reviewers say that the FE's telephoto does an as-good or better job at zooming compared to the higher megapixel cameras. Yes, as the iPhones and Pixels (and the better Samsungs), excellent software makes a big difference, but sensor size has become very relevant too.

Plus Dolby Atmos, the ability to add feature buttons to the camera by dragging and dropping, the ability to pair a BT mouse and use a cursor on the phone, There seem to be so many features that are not being addressed on most video reviews, which could be due to there being just so many features available on this phone (by the time you learn to use them all, it'll be time to upgrade again!)

It's a bit confusing so bare with me.
When the original S20 lineup was announced (S20, S20+, S20 Ultra) at the beginning of the year, the processor you got would depend on your region. America + parts of Asia would get SnapDragon regardless of 4G/5G variants, and the rest of the world got Exynos.
Now, with the S20 FE, the processor no longer depends on the region, but rather the variant. This means that *all* 5G versions of this phone come with the SnapDragon 865 worldwide, while *all* 4G variants come with the Exynos.
This doesn't apply retroactively to the original S20 lineup and it only applies to this specific phone.
Hope it's not too confusing!
This device has my full attention as I contemplate upgrading from my Pixel 3 XL. My battery life has SO tanked on Android 11, the beta of 11 had better battery life than the released version.

I like this, it holds up to its name "Fan Edition" they are spot on on this
HDR+, Gorilla glass 6, ultra sonic fingerprint reader, heavier bass on the speakers, glass made back and all the other small things costs significant money and it is noticeable in midranger phones how they usually cut all of these (in addition to good camera system, good haptic feedback, screen resolution or refresh rate, color accuracy)
They took what tech bubble or "fans" liked in their flagship and discarded the other money costing not so important stuff to provide for them. So you can have state of the art phone with latest technologies and small quality of life additions, or a really good phone with all you "need" for less money. this strategy is awesome and I think this is the first time they could pull this off without sacrificing important features

Even in Europe the 5G version of the FE comes with a Snapdragon, the regular version has an Exynos so you kinda get a choice

The thing is: why not listen to customers BEFORE you release the actual device, instead of releasing a new version only some months later. Now I'm even more hesitant to buy a new phone because there is a possibility that they revise it later on...
There will be different tiers of buyers almost always. Those that want "bleeding edge" new phones, you know ALL the bells and whistles. They want to be the first to jump aboard. After that comes the "most essential" buyers, like for this fan edition, who just want a good camera, good display, and good battery. That's it. No gimmicky fluff to it and just the things that work (work especially well in most areas). And of course there the "I just need a phone" tier. Dated tech but does the job at bargain price. No frills or fun lol. Nothing wrong with that. If you need a phone you need a phone lol.
@@jeffrossip6803 Sure. But this is why we have the normal Version, the "+" and now also "ultra". But that should be it. Why must there be a Samsung A line, or M, or J... With their own tiers. Thats why I always liked the Apple approach in the earlier years. There is one phone, you take it or not. Of course choice is good, so having a larger version or "cheaper" is nice. The same with their laptops. And if it is too expensive, simply buy last year's release. Because unlike Android phones, they are still supported for a very long time.
The same with all other laptop Brands: why must there be x thousand different laptop version, no non-techy person will ever understand how the tiering is... Just release a device and maybe ONE premium and/or budget version alongside.
Dont get me wrong, my mobile and living rooms devices are basically all Samsung, and Im still on an S8 and my next device might also be from them. But sometimes less choice is more, if the quality is right. Like iphones in the old days (never had one): there was THE iPhone and nothing else. Everyone knew what that meant. And the newest generation was always better.
Which is another thing I did not feel for a long time with the normal versions of the S10 and 20... [Longer rant on that matter removed before posting 😄]
@@tau-rho You have more choice then. That's what anyone should want instead of a choice of 3 or 4 tops. You have the top range with premium materials and tech. Then there's pretty good material and tech. Last, there's everything else that can fit a range of prices. Most ppl just see price. There's a phone for everyone at 100, 200, 300, etc. That's an advantage in my opinion. Apple you don't get that (good phones no hate) but they have very few to choose from and typically cater to "premium feel, premium performance" customers, so you'll pay no matter what if it's your preference. They date their phones fast to keep selling. Samsung or androids in general give you options at almost any price point. Find out what YOU would pay for a phone and go with that. Of course make sure it has what you need. If you find it's lack luster then you need step up a tier or try a different brand. I assure you though not all "cheap" phones are bad in the least. Check them out. Just do your research obviously. If I'm being honest the 120 display and the lastest snap dragon chip sold me on the s20 FE. It's an all rounder and hits a sweet spot in most areas
@@jeffrossip6803 I do totally agree with you that choice is important for customers to find a device for your particular needs. But I also think that there is one weak point in your argument: You seem to want to buy a brand, not a product. It should never be about that. If Samsung does not offer what you want, go somewhere else. The only way companies will listen to customers is by your wallet. If their products do not cater to anyone's needs, they have to come up with something better. If anyone just buys their stuff just because there is one of many devices that is just 'good enough', then the company will of course continue to do that. It's like a restaurant that serves pizza, burgers and asian food. It just CAN'T be all great.
There is absolutely no problem with there being premium brand only offering premium (and expensive) products. But this just means that their products/the brand is just not for you then. You wouldn't want Lamborghini to also produce non-sport cars just to have affordable Lamborghinis, do you?
And to be clear: I AM heavily invested in the Samsung eco system (monitor, TV, earphones, watch, phone, soundbar), but I also keep my devices for a very long time (three smartphones so far: the original Google G1, S4 and S8), so this is not just "Samsung bashing" for the sake of it.
@@tau-rho It's not the brand exactly. Yes certain brands have exactly what I'm looking for most of the time but I wouldn't stay to 1 brand if it made no sense. If phone A and phone B had identical parts and performance but B was cheaper then I'm going B as it would make no sense to pay more for the same thing. Different story if you're already buying into an ecosystem (Apple/samsung). But samsung makes apps that control their products so really you could buy almost any android and still have it work with all your samsung stuff. Apple has actually made phones that are more "cost friendly" to fit in just like the "fan edition" models for samsung. Although their bread and butter is obviously the premium devices, which is no problem. As long everyone is competing then we win lol. But honestly it truly comes down price and having an oversaturation of phones isn't all that bad. Sales and deals to be had and better for the consumer. Should there be a million and 1 phones? Absolutely not, but we have to do research as consumers to best fit our needs and budget. Ppl are buying all the different devices at different price points with an overwhelming amount of options for screen size, bettery size, camera, etc. so having a more narrow pool of choices is impossible because everyone wants something a little different or fits their personal preference. The bigger companies want a slice of that action hence their line up of W,X,Y,Z. Us the consumer made this monstrosity lol. I personally hated the days where you walked into the store and your choices were a moto razr and the lg chocolate... That's it lol. Nothing else. But I totally get where you're coming from.

The flat screen is honestly the biggest thing about this phone. Curved screens are unacceptable to me. Now that my city got 5g I think I will upgrade to this phone

A slightly curved screen is unacceptable, but a massive camera bump on the back that makes so your phone can't sit flat on any surface - that's fine???
I finally upgraded and got the s20 fe in cloud mint. I came from an S8 myself and let me say you will love this upgrade. It feels like a full jump over the s8 no problem. My carrier had a killer deal to turn in my s8 that I couldn't refuse (I own my phone also check your carrier for a deal they gave me 500 for my s8. No joke). In my eyes it was a no brainer but I was scared leaving the s8 cause man was it a good phone for me. Took a beating and never had a single issue since I got it like around 3 years ago. I liked the smaller form of the s8. Super easy to hold in 1 hand. The FE is gigantic in comparison, so be aware of that. That's my only gripe though and just my own personal opinion. Everything else though is absolutely superb. Make the jump if you can get a deal for turning in that s8.

Why is everyone focusing on release-prices? Reality is, you can get the S20 for the same price as the S20 FE, since the S20 already dropped in price by a few hundret bucks
Im sure thats only in the US, other countries dont have as an aggressive of a price cut. Then when the FE get its price cut it will be much cheaper and at that point the a series just make no sense lol

Samsung is still selling the regular S20 5G for $999 on their site and on Amazon. The only places I can find S20s below MSRP are ebay and B&H where it's either not the 5G version, has the shitty exynos SoC or it's a refurb.

Well then this is the phone for you. All 5G variants of this phone comes with SnapDragon worldwide, whereas the 4G version comes with Exynos. It no longer depends on your region, just on whether you get the 4G/5G version.

I like how this is the best phone Samsung has released for a long time in terms of price to performance but I've seen amazon reviews of it where for example one dude hated the plastic back and the flat screen, commented on nothing else and wrote that "Samsung has lost a long time royal customer" lol. For a Samsung phone the FE is good.
But that doesn’t negate the cheap plastic back and gorilla glass 3 front.
The problem is, Samsung has been raising their price so much,to a point where they make the bare minimum of a phone with price to value, Sammy fanboys believe they must kiss their feet,instead of hold the accountable ( though the average consumer does it trough simply not buying their flagships).
But,for an android is still a good phone,especially for Exynos regions,being the only way to get a SD865 Samsung through the 5G variant.

Stock android is the one without all the added gimmicks and features, bloatware etc. stock is the one thats simple to operate and runs smooth as all normal ppl want. if u want something u can download it. One UI is the one with 1 million features that you will never use... as one guy put it... Its like u went to buy a knife (stock android) and someone sells u on a swiss army Knife (one UI)... Sure it has cork screw, pliers, nail file and about 10 other things thats cool.. but u only wanted the knife and now ur knife is bulky and takes up unnecessary space and is slower to open etc etc... So if u want simple to use devices that benefit your everyday life and is more secure. Thats easily IOS or Stock android.. want flashy techy stuff that may not do basic things easy but u have 1 million features and gimmicks.. thats one UI.

So close to actually wanting this, but some guy is posting video samples of the Pixel 5’s 4K 60fps video recording and it looks INSANE. Buttery smooth and almost PERFECT stabilization with little or no jitter..
I’m still not gonna get one because it’s running on 765g which is a bit under spec for me, but all these choices just kinda make me want to hold on to my current OnePlus 6t and see what happens with all this competition in the future.
I'd consider the light an durable plastic back to be an upgrade.

Size was the main reason why I went s10e, yet I still wish it was slightly smaller. And I also wish it had a plastic back - after the xperia z5c that I had before I was reaaaaaally hesitant about glass backs. I really don't get the appeal of them - they're fragile and slippery fingerprint magnets that easily get scratched. The matte plastic back on a Desire X felt the best out of all the phones that I have ever owned (or even held in hand), despite being more of a budget option.

Honestly, this phone is a strong contender for my new phone coming from the Moto X4 because the Pixel 5 seemed kinda meh for the price, although it would have full Fi support, the 4a 5G seems a bit more compelling for me than the 5 (headphone jack ftw) but the lack of expandable storage and limited to 128gb is kind of a sticking point for me. I think I'm just gonna wait to see what the OnePlus 8T brings to the table and then make my final decision there.
I upgraded from Moto X4 to OnePlus 9 and been regretting ever since. Planning to sell it off and buy S20 FE.
I got this a few days ago. I love it. Everything I want, and don't feel guilty about buying it.
