I don't know how anyone can justify Fjallraven Kanken's price point. You're literally paying for that logo and it seems like only rich girls that barely carry anything use them at colleges.
One of the biggest factors in their price point is that they are ethically produced. It is still a luxury to be able to afford one, but if you can, they are both great quality, durable, and are being produced ethically to the environment and does NOT use child labor (hence why it is more expensive). This is the biggest reason I personally use their backpacks, because they are more pricey but not terribly, and you are not supporting child labor with your purchase :) They also hold up great in my experience
There is a reason that the JanSport and Vans backpacks are so similar. They are from the same parent company (VF Corporation). So the Vans bag is likely designed by the JanSport team but with the Vans coloring queues.
Before the days of needing laptops for class, the classic jansport superbreaks were legendary. Lightweight, sturdy. I actually love the minimalism of this one that we looked at and the materials. It's a backpack you could VERY easily compact into luggage for vacation and whip out to carry as your go bag or a secondary bag for souvenirs on the return trip. I don't necessarily feel like it's the best designed bag out there for school nowadays. But I look at that the same way converse chuck taylors aren't the best basketball shoe anymore. They're still iconic and everybody loves them.

Separate padded laptop compartment that is a couple inches off the ground. Many pockets, and good price for what you receive. I have the Jansport main campus, which I use for school and love. $48. Main campus is the same as big campus except main campus has less pockets.
I noticed that zipper issue with the JanSport since I have a superbreak plus. But I don't really care as it's much better than anything else. I really appreciated buying that bag.

I’ve head that the Fjallraven Kanken is extremely uncomfortable if you actually fill the bag because of the thin, unforgiving straps.
And here I was thinking my kids were the only ones going to school with a gallon of milk.
