The laptop backpacks are definately worth it. The inside wall bows out if you're not using the laptop compartment so you aren't wasting any space. I don't own a laptop so I fold up a raincoat and store it in the laptop compartment. This keeps me prepared for any unexpected showers as well as provides some extra padding between my back and the main compartment. Love this pack as a travel bag.
I got a great deal on a Kanken Classic at a consignment store. It’s pink, not my preferred colour choice, but it was a good price so I figured it would be worth getting to see how I liked it. I began using it as my EDC. It fit my lunch bag, rain jacket and a few other essentials. I was surprised how comfortable the straps are. I ended up buying the separate water bottle holder which solved the problem of the too narrow side pockets. I really liked the Classic but after a year, I decided to upgrade to the Kanken No.2 15” Laptop bag in a different colour way. I liked having the separate laptop compartment but I found the bag very uncomfortable to carry. The padded straps just don’t work for me. They keep wanting to slide off my shoulders. I’ve since gone back to my old pink Kanken Classic and have decided to sell the 15” laptop bag.
@@desislavaatanasova3934 nope, you’re not the only one. In a Reddit discussion about bags a couple of people mentioned the same problem with the padded shoulder straps on the Kånken laptop bags. I’m still enjoying my pink Kånken Classic. I made a few modifications (mainly cosmetic) to it, so after investing money, time, and effort, I’m going to hang onto it.
Useful video. I'm thinking of getting the laptop backpack cos I have to carry a laptop to work regularly now. Till now, I've been using my trusty Kanken Classic and placing the laptop case inside (like the video suggested at 4:28), but it's a pain having to unpack everything and then repack to get the case in and out.
I have my kanken classic + additional strap for 5 years and I love it! However, these days I’m thinking to upgrade it to laptop version since I’m going back to uni and need more room for my ipad & laptop. But this video changed my view! I think I’m gonna buy the add-ons water bottle holder instead to make the main compartment bigger. Thanks!
I actually own two the classic one and the 15 inch one. I am planning on getting the tote back n who knows maybe a mini one I really love the backpacks. My 15 one I bring it everyday when I got to bring my laptop n my classic one for everyday besides school , also for trips. They’re very everlasting and comfortable although I still wouldn’t recommend using the classic one if you’re bringing heavy books with a laptop.
I can only speak for my specific use case. I commute back’n’forth on my maxi scooter and I tuck my standard Kånken inside the rear trunk. I carry a large, 16inch, M1 Pro MacBook Pro in a neoprene sleeve inside the Kånken. It fits so narrowly, but it does, and along with a large cable case, sunglasses case, wallet, and so on. I can also fit in an 11” iPad Pro with its keyboard case. The overall package is very heavy, but for a short walking distance it’s ok. Definitely a bigger pain on rainy days when I commute by train, but I have, and I’m still alive. Main complaint: the side pockets are too narrow for a standard-size bottle (when the laptop is in) and too deep for anything else (I’ll probably get that clip-on thingy). Having such a relatively small backpack forces me to think deeply about what I want to carry, leaving behind all the unnecessary, non-mission-critical stuff I’d normally stuff in. I’ve give a thought about a laptop-fitted Kånken but chances are that for the time being I’ll stick with what I already have, maybe adding some accessories for additional comfort.
Something important to note about the 17" laptop backpack is that it is quite tall, so if you're putting folders, laptops, & pencil pouch, along with other items, it'll make the backpack sag over time & will hurt your back as well. I'm currently debating a 13" or 15" backpack b/c the 17" has gotten so uncomfortable to the point where I worry it'll have negative long-term effects on my back if I continue to use it. tl;dr: consider the frame of your body when choosing a backpack from any brand & how it will sit on your back
I was excited about the Kanken and got a 17”. Then tried even my EDC essentials and realized this did not seem like a durable bag for carrying a lot. Returned within a day and got it a Raven 28. Truly the Raven 28 and some of the their other backpacks are far better bags for their cost.
Kanken's are super bare-bones and definitely not for everyone. Agreed, there are better options if you value lots of organization and a more robust shoulder pads/back panel. Glad the Raven 28 worked out for you in the end!
Well that's disappointing.. somehow the 15" laptop kanken we got this summer doesn't have the inner extra pocket that you show in this video... Also for anyone wondering, a 17" laptop fits in the 15" laptop kanken.

@@Naru-Maki oh tyty, it took me 3-5 min to put my laptop without pouch into the classic one and when i dropped the bag by accident, my laptop got minor outside damage
I have a kaken laptop bag, but the only difference with mine and the original kanken is the added laptop slot. There’s no zipper pocket inside the main compartment for me. Anyone know why?
I've had the sternum strap on my Kånken laptop all the time. I just put it right below the shoulder pads. For me, it worked but I realise that for others the strap might end up in the wrong position. On my bag, the side pockets are pretty wide and I have no problem fitting a 0,5 litre water bottle on one side and my 0,5 litre thermos flask on the other. For the main question: I bought my Kånken because I wanted a backpack with an outside laptop compartment. A Kånken classic would not be a choice for me. Other backpacks are more comfortable to carry. Having said that, I think that the laptop compartment is excellent and the bag is big enough for a weekend trip.
Just a quick question, I'm planning on buying the 15 inch laptop bag. Is there a need to use a laptop case with this bag? Do you think the built in padding is enough to protect the laptop on its own? Also, thank you for this video, very straightforward and informative.
I’m not sure what to go for classic or 17inch? Use my backpack for travel mainly sorry only carry bottle of water jumper passport keys etc any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks 🙏
Thanks for this useful video! I'm still in a dilemma though. I have a 13inch work laptop, I sometimes go the dance class after work. So the bag also needs to fit my dancing shoes and clothing. But I think the Kanken Classisc is the best choice then?
We just performed a quick test and were able to fit a 13" laptop (in a padded sleeve), running shoes (size 8 women's), sweatpants, shorts, long sleeve shirt and a t-shirt inside the Kanken Classic. It all fits but didn't leave room for anything else. You should be fine with the Classic but if you need more packing room it might be worth upgrading to the 15" or 17" Kanken. Hope this helps!
I am using a 14inch laptop with a 16:10screen, and I can tell it is pretty tight when put the laptop in a case when using the original kanken , and funny it is same story in kanken laptop 15

Is the inner zipped compartment on the laptop 15” a new upgrade by fjallraven? My 13” kanken laptop doesn’t have that feature and I bought it from myfoxbag in December 2022.
It depends on the diameter of your bottle. The largest bottle we were able to fit in the Kanken Classic was a 24oz/700 ml bottle (with 7.2cm diameter). You should be able to fit a 750 ml bottle in the Kanken Laptop 15" and 17” since they have bigger side pockets.
