    Great job on pushing through with tough questions, Coby, especially on the 737max vs 320neo front.
    While I understand that he needs to defend his product, I think the claim that only a very small percentage of narrowbody missions need the range of the neo LR and XLR is a bit logically flawed. Of course that number is miniscule precisely because aircaft capable of that specific mission did not exist before. Once sales and deliveries of the neo LR and XLR ramp up, surely the percentage of long range narrowbody missions would also increase. That's a market that Boeing, admit it or not, would be missing out on.

    • @NortheasternP.T.S.

      @Tomistauchdabei 10 месяцев назад +2

      I generally totaly agree but I don't know if thats a very big problem vor Boeing. I mean there are certain Max variants that have a relatively high range and the 787-8 is also relatively small and has a very long range. So my question: Would this small market (routes too long for the 737 and too small in passenger volume for the 787) be a reason for Boeing airlines to switch to Airbus? I honestly don't think so (except of a few exceptions of course). I don't think that Boeing will loose market share because of that. The only thing imagineable is, that some Airbus airlines may have bought the 787-8 or 737 Max before to fill in this gap and now Airbus has it's own variant to offer for it's own customers.

    Interesting conversation regarding the Mid Market, single isle aircraft and the 767F. I have been thinking about, as I always do, the 757 and in particular a 757x, next generation. The aircraft everyone would want and the 320xxx killer.
    When the 767 project was underway the 757 project came along with them making the choice to use commonality across the two aircraft. Seems to have worked out well.
    I believe Boeings ace up their sleeve would be to reduce the diameter of the 787, down to a single isle, keeping the form identical with the sloped nose, etc. The wings should be resized to ensure the lift factor stays high to keep the 757's short and high alt field ability. The engines would be the question, but whichever engine is chosen, it would have to support short/high alt field capability. It would be lighter so a GEnx would be too much but a Leap isn't enough. I'd go for the GEnx with a little placard next to the throttles, pleading to not firewall them. ;-)
    There would be a synergy between the 787/757x as there is with the 767/757, with a nod to the former. If I had Boeings attention, I would do everything I could to beat this idea into their heads because it would be a suitable next gen 757. A 32xxx killer and the plane everyone would want, like the 757. Even God wants a 757.

I liked your directness regarding the rivalry between the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo. I think this kind of approaches, more direct and objective, are the key to make this kind of interviews more interesting and captivating. As for the "secret company" that will bet on a large scale in the Boeing 777X, my bet goes to Emirates (or maybe Qatar Airways, who knows...). • @w8stral

      Well, anyone who wanted the capability of a a321XLR has already been able to get it. It is called a 757... Very Very Few used 757 on such routes. 757 were all bought for much shorter routes with larger passenger numbers + cargo. Key is the + cargo. Why the 757-300 never sold worth a damn. Couldn't carry the Pax + cargo. Though with new engines it could do so now. a321 has a smaller wing and why everyone is using it as the 757-200 replacement. Market has expanded since then so instead of selling 100-->200 757s for long routes, Airbus can probably sell 400 of such planes and why it is PARTIALLY feasible.

    • @FlyByWire1

      @w8stral 10 месяцев назад

      @@jameskjx Let me know of any route that wants PAX at long range and ZERO cargo... There is a reason 753 never sold worth a damn as this is EXACTLY what the XLR is... a people mover which carries ZERO cargo if you fill the extra 16,000 Liter fuel tank. In case you need help that is ~15t of fuel instead of cargo. Most air routes require CARGO to be profitable. Especially, especially LONG SKinny routes to out of the way destinations. So far, those who bought the XLR... almost all of them own 757's. Probably to mostly use on routes of ~sub 2000nm flights where they do not have to fuel up at one end of their destination as said destination has VERY expensive fuel.

      I will answer that. The 787-10 HGW simply means airlines like KLM , United , British airways and more , who operate dozens of 777-200ERs won't have to order the a350-900 as a replacement because the 787-10 will now be able to match is range and performance .
      In simple terms , the 787-10HGW will steal away potential orders from the a350. Around 50-150 to be more precise.

    So Boeing did a lot to the 767 Tanker. MCAS, some better screens and software; added some very old reliable engines so they would start when you pressed the button. They were about to close the line! 737s which are cheap and stretches of the NG with newer engines, but of course lack range compared to the 320 family; especially the 10 which can't fly the Atlantic with a load. I doubt that will matter? And every bodies favorite: the 777-X, which is years late and has a glitch in the flight control software because Boeing fired all the computer engineers! Boeing used to produce new aircraft faster than they try to roll out a modified old model, and we can expect that into the 2040s: wow, I can hardly wait! Still I enjoyed seeing the marketing type spin.

      Boeing has made it clear that they don't think there's enough technological advancement with real world impact to justify the 797/NMA. As posted below, they need a real leap forward tech to give a salable leap in stats. Thus the truss braced wing research.
      BTW: As an addendum, the 737 Max is a success in this universe. They have like a 4000+ order backlog of them and IIRC it's well ahead of where NG orders were, even given the crisis. I just flew on one and they're great, muuuuuch better than the NG's as a passenger. Smooth, roomy, and quiet.

    that “middle of market” (B737 MAX vs A321 LR/XLR) response was very disappointing from Boeing. I was very interested over the past few years about what Boeing was going to do in response to the LR/XLR, but have never been able to find a concrete answer. Well, credit to Coby, I found it, but it turns out that it almost seems that they are avoiding the problem, saying that it won’t be a very big market segment and that small planes compromises on passenger capacity. But the thing is, isn’t that what this anticipated market is supposed to be, small passenger numbers on long distance flights?! This makes Boeing’s statement, at least in my opinion, flawed at best. Please feel free to discuss my opinion, would love to talk about it.

    • @w8stral

      Uh, answer to that is called a 737 replacement with taller landing gear and a slightly bigger wing. 737's wing is maxed(pun intended) a321 has a larger wing than a320 and why it has the better PAX/Range. XLR is a joke as anyone wanting the XLR capability could have been using a 757 for several decades now. No one or should I say, almost NO ONE did so. Airbus probably will not lose money on it, but it won't be making money other than as a portfolio filler.

    • @Infiltator2
      @Infiltator2 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@w8stralThe A321 and A320 have the same wing except their flaps. Yeah and all those 757 will get replaced by the XLR. And with the fuel efficiency the cost per seat is also so low that low cost carriers can work with them which is a completely new market.

    • @w8stral
      @w8stral 10 месяцев назад

      @@Infiltator2 And no. a320/a321 Span is identical but the internals of the wing are all changed due to larger flaps and higher MTOW. Which means the outer form jigs are still applicable, all the pieces which have to be formed, and made up are different. LE slats and spoilers will be the same though. Uh no about fuel efficiency... if this were true then people would bu using 757 on said routes as their fuel efficiency per seat compared to a wide body is superior. There are VERY few 2500nm+ routes flown by 757 today. I think majority buying the XLR will have a central hub where fuel is CHEAP, uh CHEEEEEPPP, and want to be able to fly from CHEAP fuel to destination and BACK to CHEAP fuel without refueling on routes most likely dominated by PAX and no cargo around 2000nm==> 2500nm and maybe upwards of 3000nm so they only have to buy a small amount of EXPENSIVE fuel compared to CHEAP fuel or none at all.

      New engines, the interior from the 777X or 787, latest avionics, new wing design taken from the 787, along with the slightly smaller less powerful GEnX-2B or a Trent 1000, LED lighting and they could make the fuselage from composites to lower weight if they wished.

It theoretically should make assembly cheaper as well. So far this last aspect has NOT happened. Maybe in the future this will happen. For now...
