You’re a good man Christian, and your insights are highly valued. We’re the same age, and I too have a string of successes wrapped in failures. For the answer was a career change at 50, and it was a great move, that’s led to more success and more failures. I fail in different ways now though, which shows I learned from the last ones, and ultimately that’s what life’s about. So good to have you back on your channel.

Christian, you're one of the few people that do good RUclips monologues. Whilst you were 'away' re-thinking the direction, my good friend Jon & I often discussed when you'd be back and in what form and all this seems like a good start. You're also one of the few people that spurred me on to actually create something myself, I've finished 45 whole complete tracks now in my little low budget studio, but YOU influenced that so thank-you for that too! Keep pushing forward and don't be afraid to slide back a bit along the way too.

Wonderful thoughts. As a freelance music producer for singer-songwriters (with a lot of composing intertwined), I get all of the points , especially the ones about the struggle for financial security, but ultimately we have to keep making bold steps towards the goal of creating, because that is what we were created to do in some sense and if it brings joy to us and others then who’s to stop us. I’d love some sort of meet-up/zoom/ with other likeminded people here to build a family and support structure😊

People follow you for your ability to connect with your audience in a humble and personal way. The intimacy of this video goes way beyond discussing the next product or event... and for that reason we tune in and support you. Happy to have you back Christian!
Don't give the people that mean ill towards you the opportunity to hold anything over you. They'll keep coming back as long as there's a reception to their manipulation and deceit. We should never apologize for something we didn't do. It leaves the door open to exploitation by those that have something to gain.

Absolutely wonderful to have you 'back'. I was just listening to 300 Strangers this morning and hadn't realised your channel had ported to this one but very glad of the new content. What you say is true of any enterprise (music is my hobby but I work as a writer/artist for a living) and whilst I could be considered reasonably successful in my field by any reasonable metric, I've long come to realise that how I respond to 'failure' (and I do hate that word because failure and success is just not binary at all) is far more instructive asa means of growth than and perception I occasionally have about my successes. Anyhoo, being a professional creative is often a solitary place so I appreciate the company.

I thank you for your candor and the vulnerability that you clearly present.
I look forward to hearing and seeing more from you as this endeavor evolves.
I continue to be amazed at the polarization of the collective and the apparent eagerness to critique if not indeed attempt to undermine what is the free expression of another. Projection perhaps.
No one is suggesting that anyone must completely align with the message.
Yes, loving what we do ought to be the prime motivation and it’s own reward.

This was beautiful. And oddly enough, I've been grappling with some of this recently.
Years ago, i did a talk on the need for achievement, using maslow's hierarchy and tailoring it to my own concepts. Little did i know how much I'd be revising and renewing my own drivers and needs (and wants) to beat the fears and failiures that crop up due to the consistent undulations of a creative path.
Thank you making a video on a necessary, yet understandably delicate topic.

Interesting topic for sure! I definitely agree with your sentiments. My career was really badly hit by covid, and I’ve never recovered from it tbh. I dont know how I feel about the wider industry ATM, or where its headed…But having a similar attitude has opened up other areas of my life back up instead, and made me a happier person overall. I think as musicians we all tend to spend a lot of our lives struggling against the current for every inch forwards; wether creatively or professionally, but I’m starting to think that just going with the flow of life, appreciating all the little moments along the way and keeping your head out for opportunities down stream is a much more appealing approach. Just being ok with however life unfolds or something.

I have embraced my failure. I’m thankful I didn’t succeed at my dream 30+ years ago. At the time, it was hard to get those rejection letters, but in retrospect, I am so happy I didn’t get into the actual business. I see what has happened to so many artists having breakdowns. I’m bipolar, so it would have been horrible for me to battle that while on tour.
I turned 50 last month. I write songs every day, but it’s for my sanity - not for money.

So my moment of realisation came in March this year, when I finally admitted I was no longer ok, and wasn’t sure I could trust myself to fix myself. All the signs had been there to one degree or another for some time, and people had reached out to check how I was but I just kept the pretence up.
I won’t bore you with the details but a lot, too much in fact, of what you said in this was spot on.
I have been shouting at the world for so long that I had forgotten to first consider how I was affecting the world around me and me in this world.
It’s a process and o am nowhere near out the other side, but every day that fog you speak of clears a little more.
I have no idea what I will do from here, or whether anything will really change for the better. But for now at least I’ve stopped shouting.

I once had an interesting interaction about winning, just after we did a small workshop on the topic. At the end, the person who lead the exercise told that her goal was for the end state to be beneficial for each participant (hence why she did not call us contenders). So when I told her that I'm never loosing she came storming furious at me where I got the nerf for such an attitude.
Seeing her lightbulb go on when I explained to her that we either win or we learn something new but I never loose. You only truly know the rules of the game if you know how to let someone else win without them noticing that you do.

Good video. I was a salaried composer for an animation studio up until december last year but was fired after a few months (your anecdote about being fired was pretty relatable in this case!), although I did work for them as a freelancer for about a year before. I have to admit though I'm pretty traumatised from the whole experience, because after doing music for 20 or so years and trying and failing at all sorts of stuff, it really felt like I finally had "made it", and it was "destiny" and everything would go from strength to strength from there, blah blah blah. I do also honestly feel like I wasn't so much to blame for this situation either, although I know you say for us to "own it".. still I'm sure there were a couple of ways I could of handled it all differently.
It's very difficult to pull myself up back again, which is kind of sad despite the level of skill I attained in writing all sorts of genres, including orchestral. My saving grace is that I do video production and enjoy it too (which I have to double down on the for the time being), but it's always difficult when you're musical at heart. It's very difficult at this point to convince myself that I can have another run at this despite having tons of scored animations in my private portfolio from this studio. I was approached out of the blue initially when given the opportunity to work with them, so it makes it harder thinking I have to reach out to tons of companies only just to get ignored now. It's brutal out here, but maybe someone else in the comments can relate!

I feel for you. Making it is only when you make it for later. Every time I thought I had "made it" proved to be a dead end. A job I nearly turned down ten years ago because I "didn't really get it" is now into its 9th season. I only realised it was the best thing I'd ever done about 4 seasons in!

YEs i can relate. Same happened with me. When you think you made it, it might still be again something transitory... People are very unstable these days and think everyone can be substituted. DOnts trust nothing unless it proves to you something .. With your portfolio you can certainly get many freelance and teaching gigs. Don´t give up!
