  • In this video, film composer Christian Henson discusses courage. How you don't need to FEEL courageous to BE courageous. Whether that be breaking your own artistic mould, jacking in your job, moving country or indeed offering your services up to someone who in turn could help you.
    Let us know when courage has benefitted you, or when it hasn't or indeed when a lack of courage has betrayed you.
    We love making resources and tools for the music making community to use for real. Subscribing to this channel helps, but if you want to go further we have some tasty merch for you here!

    I resigned from my job last week after 32 years working for a large global organisation. I just couldn't stand it anymore, staring at a computer screen all day with a ballooning crazy workload was killing me slowly. And what's it all for, a decent wage packet every month and to look forward to a coffin as my leaving gift. Now I will follow my dreams, get healthier, live a more simplistic lifestyle and last but not least restart my music career that I love so much. Thanks Christian, your words really struck a huge chord with me and for anybody else out there in a similar situation if you can do it, do it! Be courageous, you won't regret it!

      Taking a public stand against society’s most oppressed, ridiculed, discriminated, victimized, and suicidal minorities is courage?

    • @EdVizenor
      @EdVizenor 8 месяцев назад +9

      @deastman2 know my friend unfortunately that's a manipulated narrative... and it's pretty shameful to abuse words like that. He expressed he believes a boy is a boy and a girl is a girl. Imagine that. He stood up for biology and science. And by the way these people would be much happier if they just went and live their life but the fact that they try to shove this lifestyle and force us to believe in it, and then try to manipulate it and make us look bad if we disagree... thankfully the world is waking up to today's tactics. Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I hate you. We are so over these manipulative tactics. You caused this great man to suffer, and we will have no more of this.

    • @EdVizenor
      @EdVizenor 8 месяцев назад +5

      @deastman2 furthermore what is a real tragedy is these word bullies, like yourself, claim to defend diversity and acceptance for everyone and yet they can not ACCEPT an opinion... different then theirs? It is the epitome of hypocrisy. If you believe in allowing people to be themselves then let people think what they want to think and don't fight to kick them out of the company they found it because their opinion is different than yours.

    • @deastman2
      @deastman2 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@EdVizenorYou’re really twisting things around. Who is the one dismissing and invalidating an entire group of human beings, and who is speaking up for them? It isn’t being a bully to defend those being attacked. The bully is the one throwing the punches at the defenseless. And it’s amusing that you stand up for him having the courage to speak his mind, but when I do the same in response it’s considered “shameful”. The saddest part is that I’ve always been a huge fan of Christian’s channel until this. Anyway, it’s clear that we aren’t going to convince each other, so let’s just call a truce and walk away.

    'Greater love has no man than to lay down one’s life for another'. I use this phrase as a measuring stick for courage, and when I do, it helps to remind me of the true meaning of courage and how far many of us are from the meaning of the word. You have left your mark already Christian and are an inspiration for many thousands around the world. The essence of what you are talking about is contained within music itself, in particular the creation of sound. It is multi faceted. I think perhaps you are touching on elements which deserve to be examined and thought of, after all, it is what artists do.

I love this commitment to the lexicon and your advice to mitigate the squirming, and I hadn’t thought about the change in language around “risk taking” vs “courage” so that was particularly interesting. I realise I was that kid with the scabby knees, but a long time ago, and now, regarding courage in my own life, it’s not the dramatic events that required courage (or bravery) that come to mind, it’s the courage needed just to get through a “normal” day sometimes. I'm working in the film industry for many years and I don't have any problems. The best advice I can give: If you really good at something. I mean, EXTRAORDINARY GOOD, than get in contact with the big major companies. Don't waste your time with small companies because they will never appreciate your talent and they will never support it. And most important: THINK BIG! Don't say "I'll want to reach the stars..." instead say "I want to reach the entire universe". Of course you will never reach THAT, but, and now comes the point, on your way to reach the entire universe you will reach and catch MANY stars! So, stop thinking small, start by thinking BIG.

    Great subject. Perhaps we need to recognise that selfishness can be mistaken for courage, but maybe we need both in order to take the leap. I left a highly-paid office job to start a construction company, paying me and my brother (a bricklayer) a pittance while we got it off the ground. I became an Accidental Carpenter and retired 2 years ago, having loved every minute and I never looked back. The worst that could have happened? We flop and I go and get another job. The best? A happy working life, which was the case. Was I courageous or selfish? Bit of both.

    Being brazen or taking risks for risk sake is not courage but a gamble taken at the risk of hurting oneself and/or others. Taking CALCULATED risks and being persistent on the other hand takes in consideration not only what is easy to grasp but what could be within reach with more focused effort and practice. Everything doesn’t need to be all or nothing, life or death. Persist and seek your goals, just NOT at others expense. Worthy efforts earn worthy rewards.

      Christian is in Holyrood Park hiking up to Crow Hill (his Company's namesake and also just coincidentally his initials...CH) out behind his house. The fun part today is launching Google Earth Pro and trying to figure out which path he may be on where he's having to walk in between some head high bushes (where his back would be to the Sea). Is he on the 1st trail on the bluff just above Queen's Drive, or is on the 2nd trail half way up the Hill? They both converge into the same trail farther up towards the top. Always great fun to tag along on his outings on the Hill.

    Hey Christian I was wondering if you ever saw The Northman. I'm absolutely in love with its score. It's unorthodox, messy, but very textured and gritty.

    11:35 , "eating Italian food with no tomatoes". As an Italian, it cracked me up. And yes, it took courage to comment on this.

    This is along the same lines as ‘fear setting’ which Tim Ferriss talks about in his book the 4 Hour Work Week. Compare the consequences of the worst that can happen to the cost of inaction

    Hey Christian! How are ya? Are you using the DJI Pocket 3? I've always loved the look of your videos and I saw a sillhouette that was similar to that camera, thanks!

    Courage is deciding to face your worst, deepest fears. Only to end up spending nights in the foetal position, contemplating whether your life choices are just a series of unfortunate punchlines in the universe's dark comedy routine.
    But you *will* survive in the end. And you will *never* *ever* regret the path you once choose.🤗🤗🤗

    4.5 billion already? We’re on a roll. Ok so I walked into a hornets nest on this latest project this morning, and this day has been an awesome challenge. Folks really looked up to what I had to say, and sometimes they just want a leader … somebody else to fail ? instead of stepping up themselves … although this thing still might crash, right now it’s sounding pretty good. Courage, yeah! I love your hillside rants 😺

    I've heard Tim Ferriss use the same technique that your dad mentioned. He calls it fear casting. I was actually talking to my daughter about it the other night. She gets incredibly anxious. We were talking about the lizard brain and starting to learn to figure out what's worth listening to and what's not. Not sure how much of it impacted, but hopefully a bit.

    Jesus is the most courageous man I'm aware of. I was an atheist until the age of 47, but now at the age of 55 I have found the rock on which I can stand. He encourages us to not fear. According to my wife we are told not to fear 365 times in the Bible, one for each day of the year.
