Bro, this video has more info (useful info) than Google!!! Cheers bud. Answered my questions!
Thank you!
I totally agree I’ve just bought a dcd999B on eBay and use 18v 5ah batteries with it now because of you I knew it would work so thanks
Indeed ❤
Thank you for solving the mystery that has been holding me back getting Dewalt's cordless tool from the US. I live in Asia and we only have the 18V battery here.
I’m glad my video was useful, thank you for watching!
Thanks I couldn’t find a single straight yes or no answer if 18v batteries work with 20v tools so thank you
Thank you for posting this video. It just saved me from getting scammed, since my country doesn't do the XR20, but uses the XR18.. And the scammer showed images with the 20V batteries.
Thanks for this. I was considering importing a 20v DeWalt tool from the States as it's much cheaper than here in the UK, but wasn't sure about battery compatibility. I couldn't find the answer elsewhere, and obviously no 20v batteries available here. Now I have my answer - thank you! :)
You’re welcome!
Dit it work 18v to dewalt drill or whatever 20v ?
Yes
Thanks! Answer to a question I was looking for!
Thank you, Ive been searching everywhere for someone to answer this question!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks, this was exactly what i needed to find out because i''m buying dewalt laser level with 18v instead of 12v version so i can use it with the rest of my 20v tools
Thank you for watching
I've just done a new battery build on here (cornz38) and would like to thank you. I had been thinking the same, the nominal voltage of the cells is 18.7 but the charged voltage is about 20v and i had wondered if they had used a different regulator for charging but no, your video confirms my own suspicions. Thumbed.
Thanks for watching, glad it was helpful
Thanks for clearing that up.
Great video. Exact question I needed answered
Thank you!. This clears it all up for us.
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
This is very helpful. Thank you! Tools in North America are still a lot cheaper when bought in kits.
Thank you!
So, here in the uk we are being offered the 20v max version of the dcf923 impact wrench (3/8).we normally get the 18v xr option but it appears that both are compatible with each other!
Of course they’re compatible. Where are you being offered the 20v max version?
@@toolreviewsandrestorations I've checked online at amazon /ebay and UK sellers are offering the dcf923 as a 20v system. I think the 18v version is listed as a "N" model? As the batteries are compatible it doesn't make much difference which is great👍🏻🇬🇧
@@toolreviewsandrestorations hi. Seems that the 20v dcf923 is listed as a "atomic max". This is not a UK tool as you pointed out in your vid'. Amazon offer their international seemless shipping for UK sales which is really misleading as nobody can just nip to the local dewalt supplier and buy spare batteries(20v). The 20v "atomic" and the UK 923 "B/N" versions are identicle in other than voltage! Pointless in my view but go figure🤷🏼♂️
Amazon USA ships here to France as well. That’s part of the reason I made the video to point out that you can use 18v xr batteries on 20v tools. They presumably did it because people prefer names like “20 v max” over plain old 18v. Frankly 18v sounds more professional to me and 20 v max sounds like what all the no-name and low quality brands use
@@toolreviewsandrestorations haha, sorry. I thought you was in N/American ☺️. Yes I agree, 20v does have that "middle of Lidl" sound to it. The 923 will be my next buy I think. My colleagues swear by milwaukee and as yet I havnt seen anything that comes close to their 1/2 full power nut gun and the 3/4 version is truly insane. Many thanks for your input, it's been a pleasure. 👍🏻
Thanks for info. Been checking internet for weeks!
You’re welcome, thank you for watching
Thanks!!! Just got mine and when I found out about the USA 20v batteries I was PISSED!!!! CHEERS
I also bought a dewalt drill, it says that it is 18 volts, but when I bought a battery for it, I was told that there are American batteries - 20 volts, and European batteries of 18 volts. I took the battery from the USA. And so there are five 18650 batteries and they are identical. Hello from Russia. You can change the batteries yourself later, the flux for steel and solder before. The only thing is that the capacity will be less if LG or Samsung batteries are used.
Very well explained ❤
Thanks
Thank you so much for this - I have 18v battery and charger and I see a 20v dewalt tool on sale and I want it!
You’re welcome!
Exactly what I needed. Thanks
Thank you bro! For the clarification.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Yeah...this helps alot.
Thank You.
Eu sou o comentário brasileiro que vc estava esperando.... Vídeo muito útil e didático!!!! Greetings from Brazil
Great! So that means I can get an 18v charger for my 20 v tools!! I am in europe and this video really helped! Thank you sooo much!!!
You’re welcome and thank you for watching.
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it!
Educational video....Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you!
So you say you can use a dewalt 18v lithium XR battery in a 20v dewalt power tool! What about if I used a 20v dewalt XR battery in an 18v Dewalt power tool? Yes or no?
Yes, that will work since the two systems are fully compatible
Tkank you man! It's a realy useful information for me!
Good luck!🤝
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for this video mate done the same thing trying find stuff on the net to see if there compatible cheaper to by the stuff from USA and get it imported here to the uk thanks for making this clear 👍

👍how do they charge on the 18v charger are they okay
There’s absolutely no difference, they charge fine.
dewalt batteries in america are 18v nominal, 20v is a marketing gimmick that stanley black and decker uses, when the tool is doing work it is strictly 18v
Both batteries are identical.. No difference whatsoever.. They both use the same battery cells inside, Each individual cell is rated for 4.2v fully charged.. So !! actually both the 18v and 20v would be showing more like 21v fully charged.. The 20v thing is just a marketing tactic to make the Us version sound more powerfull.. But its completely identical in every way to the 18v... They cant say 21v or choose not to because the cells mightnt make 4.2v each fully charged.. Some chargers limit the max voltage the cells can charge to in an effort to increase lifespan.. The reason 18v is more truthfull statment to claim on the packs is because we hardly ever operate the batteries fully charged.. Its usually you pick up a pack and theres somwhere between 2 bars charge showing.. This is around 18v or nominal voltage.. Buy 20v tools and use them with 18v packs, buy 20v packs and use them with 18v tools.. All will work identical with no difference whatsoever.. Its just a sticker..
You can change the batteries yourself later, the flux for steel and solder before. thanks you answered my question.
Hello Dear
I want to buy Dewalt DCF988B 20V from amazon but I have battery 18V and charger
Can I use them together normally
Thanks
Sure, they will work together fine
Thanks
Saved me time. Good work.
Thank you.
Great explanation. I was looking for this info everywhere but no answer till now. Thanks. I have bought an 20v dcf 887 from us and after 3 years it seems that it has some problems like overheating too quickly and the power tork decreases alot. The tools are the same 20v and 18v? I called a service here in Romania and they said that they do not have parts for 20v..
20v and 18v are identical. The dcf887 does seem to have some problems, it’s nothing to do with the battery. I have used 18v parts on my 20v drill, I don’t see why it would be any different for the impact driver since 18v and 20v are identical except for the stickers on the side. Thank you for watching.
So the 20v are not backward compatible with the 18v?
20v max are compatible with the 18v xr
@@toolreviewsandrestorations Ideal, thanks 👍.
Do they share same charger?
Yes, they do
Thanks mate, just saved me a small fortune :)
Thank you for watching!
what about the 20v flex volt Battery would it work on 18v tools ?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t
Thank you, Dad asked to look up if its okay to put a 20V in to a 18V drill, thank you:)
Thanks for watching
Could please confirm that dewalt 20V DCL079R1 Tripod Light can work with Dewalt 18V 5.0 Ah Battery
It will work
Lots of sites and channels warn you not to switch 20 volt and 18 volt.
Wondered why they make batteries with 2 volt difference.
I used old tools using 12 and 14 volt batteries.
There was no difference.
There is absolutely no difference between the 20v max tools of North American and the 18v XR tools of the rest of the world asides from the stickers they put on the tools. Any site that says you can’t mix them is probably just saying so because they aren’t aloud to for whatever reason or haven’t actually tried it
Thanks for this video, so just to be clear, I'm from the UK but looking to buy a 20v tool from the US which will run on my 18v batteries right?
Yes, that’s right.
how about the chargers? are they interchangeable?
Absolutely! Thanks for watching
Just make sure the input voltage matches what you got for example 120 or 240volts
Yes, I suppose that I could have added that
Thank you
So does that go for the drills themselves too? 18V and 20V Max drills are the same? Am I getting ripped off receiving a 18V drill? Dewalt China is trying to tell me they’re the same thing.
18v xr and 20v max drills are the same thing, the only difference is the sticker on the tool. Thanks for watching.
i have a dcd776 drill, what the max size battery i can use in it, it came with x2 dcb181's and they don't last long on the job...uk
This is just what I was looking for, thanks! About to grab a DCD996 & DCD887 from the US for use with my 18v XR batteries (DCB 184) in Germany.
Can I use 18v batt on 20v tools and charger??
Yes you can
@@toolreviewsandrestorations cheers mate... Love from New Zealand 👍🏽

@@beautifultinyhome hi mate...yes it does work....i havent really used my dewalts lately bcus ive got me lighter weight makitas for work. But yeah they work fine and charge normally.

Yes, you can
Bloody hell. At least i know it is basically the same. Thx and regards.
Great video!! Thanks..
Thanks!
Dude nailed it 🎉
Thank you.
Could you run the charger on 220v, the one it came with the kit from USA will work in Europe?
Thank you for watching. To run the USA 115v charger on 220v you will need a step down transformer.
Chargers always have markings on them check input voltage and it will probably either say 120V, 240V, or 120-240V which means dual voltage, I think genuine dewalt chargers are only single voltage but I have seen aftermarket chargers that are dual voltage.
Dewalt chargers are single voltage
The difference between 20 V and 18 V is simply in labeling rules. Here in the US, they are allowed to state the maximum voltage on the label. In Europe they are required to use the nominal voltage on the battery. So BOTH are 20 V max, 18 nominal...again the difference being which number the local government allows them to slap on the label.
Same goes with the 40 WH vs 36. One is max, one is nominal...and both are true in both batteries.
My curiosity lies in what the "XR" designation tells us. Here in the states, we have XR batteries, and non XR batteries...and my interweb digging tonight is trying to find out what that means.
XR stands for extreme run time. As far as I know it means nothing, just trying to make a difference between the entry level and the higher end tools I think. Here in France all Dewalt tools are labeled XR, even the atomic line and 12v max tools. Interestingly Dewalt’s 12v tools are now labeled as 12v max here instead of 10.8v like they used to be
@@toolreviewsandrestorations Interesting.
On the other, Europe is about to face a conundrum. As is, we know that all of the tools are both 20V max and 18 Nominal voltage. The US allows them to put the higher of the two numbers on the label, while Europe does not.
Enter the new powerstack batteries to this equation. With those batteries, max voltage is still 20...but nominal voltage comes in at 19.5. That was the advancement. So what does Europe do, in the future, with tools that have different nominal voltage based on the battery used?
It's a question I pose, to which I have no answer.
Those batteries are labeled as 18v here
I want to import the new 20v impact driver dcf840 in Europe from N. A. and use my 18v 5ah batteries. Thanks for your video very helpful.
Thank you for watching!
Hello, very useful information.
I live in Europe and could only find Dewalt 20V hedgetrimmers on RUclips. Will this mean that they will have the same quality then the 18V hedgetrimmers here in Europe ? Or are the machines different as well.
Thanks
Thank you for viewing! As far as I can tell they are the same quality.
what are the numbers on the battery like 5, 8 an 2. what do the numbers stand for. Why do they all different numbers.
Those numbers are the amount of amp hours the battery has. It is the amount of run time that that battery has. A 4AH battery has almost double the amount of run time than a 2AH battery.
I would have love to see you break out a multimeter and compare the two. I get the point that they are interchangeable...just curious.
Thanks for watching. When I filmed this video I didn’t have a multimeter.
If you charge both, they will show about 20v. I've already checked it. In Russia, you can take both 20 volts and 18 volts. There are 5 18650 batteries each. It depends on what voltage you take as a basis. Or 3.7 as in Europe , or 4 as in the USA.
Seems to be the only source addressing this matter still in 2024. Guess I _can_ buy cheaper NA tools online and ship to NZ.
so basically 18 V or 20 V is just a marketing game, due to regulations in EU they need to report the nominal voltage, while in US; like always they can go big mouth and say 20 V !!
Yes, that is pretty much what’s going on.
Absolutely. Battery cells are vary in voltage, depending on they are fully charged or low. A nominal 3.7V cell is about 4 to 4.2 when its fully charged and around 3 volts when its low. If there are 5 cells in it, then you can see you can call them 18V 20V or even 21Volt as well. I think 20Vmax is not a lie, 18V also.ok, but you are really use it most of the.time above this voltage. The hardware itself is the same by the way.
Thank you!
Milwaukee has a patten on anything that is labeled 18v, so any 18v battery label for any company has to pay a royalty fee to put that on their battery pack. This is why you now have 20v on most tools and makita is moving away from 18v with their 40v, metabo now has 36v etc. once the trigger is pressed on a 20v battery it’s back to 18v.
Is that only in the US or is it worldwide? Weren’t Makita, Dewalt, Hitachi and a lot of other brands making 18v tools long before Milwaukee was?
I know this is in the United States. So Makita is actually one of the first and I believe Hilti as well to implement an 18v battery. Milwaukee decided to formulate a licensing rights on anything that is of multiple lithium ion batteries at 18v. There is alot to the rights Milwaukee has and I believe Makita settled a suit with them in 2009.
Interesting, I might look into that
great video, thank you
can i buy dewalt 20v tools from us and use them with my 18v batteries in europe ?
Yes, as long as they are both the slide packs and not the old pod type batteries.
thank you. very good video.
You’re welcome, thank you for watching.
Useful video, thanks for the info.
Thank you
Si can i get a 20v battery on my 18V tool ?
Yes, as long as it’s takes the slid packs. If it takes the old pod style packs than you need an adapter to make it work.
@@toolreviewsandrestorations i have the new version of the hammer drill in 18v. So i wanted to put 20v batteries on it because they are very cheaper than in France. So if i take the 20v xr from usa will it work ?
Yes it should work.
Same thing. 18v or 20v no difference

How bout 20v battery on 18v drill?
Thank you for watching! If they are both the slide style battery then it is fine. If the 18v drill is the older stick battery style it will still be fine but you will need to get an adapter.
They are the same battery, in America they advertise the peak voltage, in Europe, the average. An 18v battery peaks at 20v. A 20v battery averages at 18. The only actual difference is the writing on the side.
@@scottN1980 they peak at 20,45 volts some 20,50

Can I charge my 20vmax on a uk 18v charger both are slide packs

Dcd777
Why do they have different Watthours?
Adrian Jusko watthours are volts multiplied by amp hours. So 2ah times twenty volts is 40 wh and 2ah times 18 volts is 36 wh.
And what's the main reason for us market to name 20 and 60 volts instead of 18 and 54 volts tools? Is it measured differently in Europe than in US?
@@adrianjusko7472 it just seems like the laws in the US allow manufacturers fool the consumer more than in Europe
@@dooovde they say 20VoltMax
Its not a lie. You can actually get 21Volt in it when its fully charged
@Attila Szabo - It might not be a lie but it went against established convention and as you can tell from the comments here it's done nothing but cause confusion. It was a shitty condescending shady move for them to suddenly start calling what was previously 18V, as 20V like it was somehow newer or better. It is identical to 18V technology because it IS 18V technology.
Cheers I have lots of crazy 18v batteries now I know I can buy 20v max tools :)
Marketing and legality forsure
Would a BMW drive and look different in France and Germany?
BMW cars made in the US are different from those made in the EU.
It’s works thanks
Thank you for watching
Thanks. However, more worrying is the fact that your granny was shipping lithium batteries in her luggage ;-)
Thanks for watching. What ever is the matter of putting batteries in your suitcase? It is no different than hauling a couple dozen GoPro batteries with you 😁
It was purely a marketing decision. You crack them open and they are the same cells! In the US research showed consumers like bigger numbers - so even when placed side-by-side the people on the test panels picked terms like Max and 20V over XR and 18V. Europeans seem, for the most part, not so swayed by pure marketing gimmicks and buy what they need - say what you like about the Germans, but they are very functional!
Yes, that’s exactly it. I don’t know about you but I prefer 18v XR, it seems more professional. 20v max just sounds like something for DIYers
Hi toolreviewsandrestorations I appreciate the information.
BTW I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
In North America they really arent 20v. They are 18v
I know but it still says 20v on the tools and batteries. Thank you for watching
@@toolreviewsandrestorations yeah. I knew the 20v max is just for marketing, basically. I just noticed watching a vid of someone in Europe that there's are "18v XR". Threw me off because i know dewalt did make 18v li-ion batteries for there North American 18V tools. Think they were "XRP" though
Yes, they were xrp although the dcd996 is still says xrp on it here
