My daughter who is 8 years old just got me into DVDs again. I’m 32 and it’s a hobby of ours now we go to yard sales and thrift stores and buy movies and tv shows we like. It feels so good to just watch what you want without having to worry about internet connection, not to mention the special features and commentary on some DVDs.
I was buying DVDs for a long time when they were cheap like $0.50 Acquired a collection of 500+. I'm done. Blu-rays are getting cheap and I'm starting that but currently focused on PS3 and actually playing my backlog of great games
Bought a dvd player for $8 at goodwill and now I mob around looking for dvds. No internet? Bad weather giving you spotty reception? No issue. Pop in a dvd and enjoy.
There still are multiple places im santa cruz that sell DVD’s. Streetlight records, abbots thrift, goodwill, friends of the library are all good places to look.
Collecting dvd films is like having your own home movie theatre, plus the extra features like the directors commentary. Its a great hobby if your a movie buff.
I’d like to see a video on movies that you can only get on DVD. For example my daughter recently asked me for sisterhood of the traveling pants but from what I can tell it never got a blu ray release. Great content and thanks for the video.
Thats a great idea and I likely will do a video like that at some point. I have both of the sisterhood of the traveling pants movies because my wife likes them and I have them on DVD but the second one is available on blu-ray and its not too hard to find for sale online. I also may do a video ok out of print movies because sometimes even if a movie is on blu-ray its expensive if its out of print.
I'm 62 and still love DVDs.Although uhd4k has ruined by VHS watching. So I just moved them to my Museum portion of my private library with my Betamax and cartrivision tapes because "They belong...In a museum!'' Collecting since 1992. Cheers
It's disappointing that physical media is dying the way it is, and most folks don't understand what is disappearing (the actual ownership of what they are buying). Between streamers having the right to completely remove movies and shows from their platforms at any time, adding advertisements to the viewing experience, and charging monthly subscriptions or individual viewings of movies and shows, it is insane to NOT collect physical media now more than ever.
I grab DVDs for certain TV shows since a lot of order shows haven’t been properly upscaled to 1080 anyway. Heck, a lot of them don’t have the source material to even get the proper treatment for 1080. So nothing wrong with goin the DVD route on that! Plus I have a few CRTs kicking around for VHS, gaming, and watching old cartoon DVDs from my youth. And with my Panasonic 4K player, the upscaling on that is pretty impressive for even DVD so I’m just fine with having a few banging around the ol collection.
I have over 300 DVDs some I have had about 20 years and to look at the disks you would think that I bought them that morning, mainly because I don't put my fingers on t he playing surface, I handle them by the edge only collect the movies that I have watched and want to keep, especially some of my favorite TV series. Cheers for the video.
I agree. I have a large collection of DVD's, especially British mysteries and comedies. I disconnected my Dish Network sice I was not watching TV. I learned years ago to buy a zone-free DVD or Blu-Ray player, enabling me to watch DVD's from Europe, since they use the PAL rather than the NTSC system we use in the US, Canada and Mexico. DVD's and Blu-Ray do not require much space for storage, a fraction of the space VHS tapes required.
It is nice to see someone realistic. I hate the dudes that are all "I feel bad for people still watching dvd" ! I mean there are gate keepers in all hobbies and the board game and metal head dudes are worse but it is still lame.

Also ebay lots, when I am looking for a single disc that is desirable and selling for $25-$50 on ebay, I will then search for disc lots that have the disc I want included, and alot of times I will find a bulk buy of 25 or 30 discs for a similar price as the disc I want because the sellers didn't think to check the individual going rates, or just doesn't care. Yes I get lots of duplicates of stuff I have, but I always get a few movies I didn't have and then give the rest to my friend that also collects movies, and then he passes on the duplicates he ends up with. I hate paying more than $10 for any disc, when most everything can be found from $1-8 pretty easily once you are tuned into collecting and always keeping a keen eye out. So grabbing cheap lots that have the gems I want in them gets me more for the same money, build the collection extremely quickly, and helps my friends collection grow at no additional cost to me or him.
I just bought multiple complete Television series on DVD last month, odds are they will never be on Blu-ray and I would be absolute gobsmacked if there's ever a TV series on 4KUHD
Great videos . I agree on buying dvds over streaming as I can never find the film I want on streaming and also it’s usually double the price over a dvd of the same film .

It's funny. Watching this I'm reminded on almost a daily basis of how fantastic 4K is. The problem is when 4K came out you were expected to buy a new machine and a new TV and spend a significant amount on the disc itself. I just can't justify that. Now don't get me wrong, if someone rolls up to my door and says here have a free tv player and 100 discs I'm not going to turn it down. That's one of the things I liked when I got my first Blu-ray player. I found out it was backwards compatible with all of my dvds. I don't know if that's the same case with a 4K player.
4K players are backwards compatible and actually upscale older formats too. My 4K blu ray player upscales dvds and blu rays to 4k. I even have a separate bluray player that upscales vhs tapes to 1080p quality.
I used to collect dvds but then started to upgrade to blu ray. I recently bought a ps5 and I am astonished at how great dvd upscale on my 65 inch tv, dvds look very good obviously not as amazing as blu ray but not far off and I love this as I still have a big collection of dvds that never came out on blu ray including lots of concerts and music documentaries.
People that complain and talk down on DVD quality are either morons, or elitist losers. There are tens of thousands of DVD releases that do not have Bluray or streaming releases. Lots of Bluray discs that were reprints of prior DVDs before BD came out can actually be WORSE quality video transfers, and often also missing features, aspect ratio options, and sound options. The DVD that came out within the era of when the movie was released sometimes is the much more desirable version. Blurays are great, when the movie is mastered or remastered properly for it, and the image bump is of course excellent in those cases. But BD is not a 'REPLACEMENT' for DVD's or DVD collecting. People need to stop getting so hung up on which of the 7 versions of the same movie rereleased from different studios is the king of all the disc options to own and just enjoy the films itself. Collecting DVD/BD/UHD isn't all about quality, let's not loose touch with the point of preserving and enjoying the media production itself and the stories being told onscreen.
I do the best of both worlds, I have over 3000 blu rays and rip em on to a NAS Hard drive for Plex to stream my library with metadata, synopsis, rotten tomato score, actor info, my own star ratings, etc on all my TVs. I highly recommend every physical media owner take the time and to do the same, makes organizing and watching your flicks super easy, fun, and convenient instead of walking up and down your shelves of movies and reading the spine to pick one. Saves yours discs too from being physically played. Tons of videos on how to do it rather easily.
A year ago I bought movies on prime video and when I went back to rewatch they were missing I definitely bought them and didn’t rent after that I canned in streaming as a whole and have grown my own physical media collection of the things I love
Mostly 4k and blu ray though as I have an expensive home cinema set up and I love the restorations they have done on some of the movies I have grown up watching, you’d think when watching these movies they are only a couple years old.
@@HomeVideoHangouts I always see people hating on other people who buy physical media being games music or movies and I find it hilarious because those people actually think they own their digital purchases. End of the day it comes down to are you really that lazy you don’t want to get up and swap discs because there’s literally no downside to physical when digital can literally be swiped from your hands no explanation needed at any time.
At thrift stores and pwn shops DVDs are cheaper to buy now than it used to be to rent at Blockbuster. So I always buyDVDs of movies i would like to watch and think of them like rentals back in the day. I’ll accumulate a small stack, watch them, and then donate them back to the thrift store. Usually keeping one or two I really like and adding them to my collection. For specific movies I absolutely loved I will some times purchase on BR or 4K. Another way to make this work for your budget is to only pay for 1 streaming service per month and then you can check if the DVD is streaming on that service, if it is not, then that is a good buy. It’s cheaper than paying for 2-4 services every month. Right now I only have Hulu. If I see a dvd for 50 cents that I want to watch and it’s not streaming on Hulu then I buy it. Ends up being way cheaper than having Netflix, Hulu, and Max. Plus I own the movie.
Thats a good strategy! I find it fun to pick up movies on physical media cheap and then have a collection that I can pull from anytime I want to watch something. I have over 1700 movies on physical media at this point at most of them are movies I haven't seen yet but I enjoy slowly watching them and reselling the ones I don't like and then picking up more to slowly curate my collection.
I grew up with dvds, but when I was a teenager and started to collect it was all about blu rays. What I like about dvds over blu rays is their price, and how almost any title is available in that format. Specifically foreign films. I am still waiting for some movies to get a blu ray release and it is very annoying.
I still collect dvds im 32 the reason i collect dvds its cheaper than streaming streaming is high and they take movies off when i can own it and watch it over again i like dvds better than streaming
I’m starting to buy Blu-ray or even DVD of movies that is relevant for me. What just don’t understand is why the artwork of DVD still way more cool and better then Blu-ray??? Blu-ray is so so simple, most of the movies.
I can’t stop buying 4ks. It’s an addiction now. I’m buying 10 a month. Getting ready to get Once upon a Time in the West, Glory steelcase, Star Trek III steelcase and High Noon next. My girlfriend is complaining about it so I got her Star is Born and Dirty Dancing
My library sells there old DVDs for $1. I found some gems. Lincoln, Life of Pi. I just found Parasite on Blu ray for $1. These aren’t d- list movies that no one has heard of they are best picture winners., Moonlight, and foreign films, Chocolat by Claire Denis. Life the complete documentary by David Attenborough, the Spider man trilogy, that box set was $2. Just amazing, I never know what I’m gonna find, and all the money goes to my local library which I feel great about.
Dvds are so cheap now its actually insane. Its not uncommon to find 2 for a dollar or 1 for a dollar. Keep an eye out for closing sales like at big lots or whatever, I got like 20 brand new dvds for like 2 dollars including season sets.
Now I would like to leave a comment because you are one of the few RUclipsrs in the film community who doesn't necessarily say that DVD is the worst format you can own. Of course, in times when only the best picture quality counts, especially for those who can no longer see any film grain, then DVD is obviously no longer an option. But you still have to give credit to the DVD for the fact that 4K resolution is not always the best choice for older films. You often see things that you would rather not have seen or when certain scenes have been digitally altered to suit today's viewing habits and I find that even worse because for me films are always a product of their time and that is how I want to see them in the future, with all their faults DVD 4LIFE ❤💿
I'm about to be 43 years old and I still have physical dvds and bluray. I even have a roku box "f*ckyou" box I'm about to toss out because I hate ads and forced arbitration, I might consider using kodi on a mini pc to replace my roku.
I actually made a whole video on where to buy movies cheap. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/1YS-5oJ6T5M/видео.htmlsi=XzN2yxYcO0pVnLrc Some places you can find them cheap are thrift stores, library stores, record stores to name a few.
@@HomeVideoHangouts especially considering the quest is only worth about $100 now 😂 but he was aware and was just trying to collect different VR headsets so I guess we all have our weird collections
In my experience, dvds are more delicate than blu rays, other than that I completely agree. I also have a problem with subtitles in dvds, they usually suck because of the font or resolution that they use.
Resolution can still change by the age of the film. Prime example the war of the worlds (org) the wires holding the alien ships become apparent the higher the resolution. So don’t feel they must be 4K blue or std dvd
If Netflix put all there shows on dvds i would have 2000 of there good movie adding to my current dvd blu ray collection which stands at 3000 thst i remember slowly still buying more when i can my parents don't understand,
I'm no expert but I'd imagine the cost of a brand new DVD movie at a retail store would go to the dealer, the manufacturer, and the publisher or something. Yet it's often triple the price to own in streaming yet there are no physical materials involved, just one more person gets to push the 'play button'. Let me guess... "inflation" like McDonald's?
Actually, Blu-ray discs have a higher scratch resistance compared to DVDs. They are coated with a special hard coating layer, making them more resistant to scratches. However, they can still be scratched if handled carelessly.
I have found that blu-rays are more scratch resistant but DVDS are more likely to play once scratched. I played a DVD from the library the other night that looked like it has been raked across asphalt and it still played fine. I was shocked!
I respect your enthusiasm for collecting DVD’s but I can’t get passed the lower picture quality with everything is high def nowadays. I am all for collecting physical medias but if your collecting anything lower than blu rays is a lost cause.
I was collecting my favourite movies on dvd. Then when I had seen how much better quality visually and in audio these same movies were on Blu Ray I never looked back. And Disc Doctor's are HORRIBLE for resurfacing discs.
Nope never collecting DVD's ever, they get scratched too easily & my Smallville got ruined...Only purchasing Blu Ray Discs which are scratch resistant.
buy dvd and put to the garbage these horrible plastic case to avoid these shells full of plastic. since I bought plastic sleeve for my dvd, I reduced 90% of storage . I have them in some kind of box like you choose vinyl in a store. it's nicer and CLEAN. all used dvd you buy have horrible dirty case. Put them to "recyclage" and buy slim sleeve ;) Believe me it's a game changer !
A person has to be careful who they buy these DVD's from. I just bought one from Ebay. It wasn't cheap, this one cost me over $22. It was the only seller any where that had the title Silver River with Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan starring. This disc won't even load let alone play and I understand there are older Warner Bros. discs that don't play but I don't even believe this is a real Warner Bros. disc. I have a lot of them and none of them have a purple color to the read side of the disc. I think this is a poor example of a pirated disc. There is no way to contact the seller because he has contact turned off. I have to wait 7 days to give it a bad review according to what Ebay's rules are. Now I have to find out how to get my money back from Ebay. Now I have asked Ebay for a refund and this guy was reported.
On a good upscaling Blu-ray player, DVD will actually look pretty good enough to entertain most people unless it's younger a person who wants a spotless smooth picture and can't have dirt on movies like most of us are used to seeing.
Except there are TENS OF THOUSAND OF DVD MOVIES that ARE NOT AVAILABE ON BLURAY. Stop being such a snob. Which the same applies to your precious Bluray, since everyone has native 4K tv's now your stupid comment should actually state that everyone should ONLY BUY UHD 4k discs since Blurays were made for peasant 1080p... DA
been collecting DVDs and laserdisc. Recently got a high end dvd player running through a DVDO upscaler for 1080p outputting to a kuros elite 60in plasma. And the image is AMAZING. I get more people commenting on the quality of the image from this setup over any oled that is in the house. The dvd boxsets are awesome and way cheaper these days. Like collectable editions etc. Have you seen the Bladerunner briefcase?!! No reason to get BR in my opinion.
I’m fifteen and I still collect DVDs and prefer physical media over streaming.

I support DVDS
Awesome!
I grew up with dvds, but when I was a teenager and started to collect it was all about blu rays. What I like about dvds over blu rays is their price, and how almost any title is available in that format. Specifically foreign films. I am still waiting for some movies to get a blu ray release and it is very annoying.
ya and sometimes even when there is a Blu-Ray release its way more expensive than the DVD version which is also frustrating.
I still collect dvds im 32 the reason i collect dvds its cheaper than streaming streaming is high and they take movies off when i can own it and watch it over again i like dvds better than streaming
Yes! DVD's are a great affordable option!
I’m starting to buy Blu-ray or even DVD of movies that is relevant for me. What just don’t understand is why the artwork of DVD still way more cool and better then Blu-ray??? Blu-ray is so so simple, most of the movies.
That is true for many movies
I can’t stop buying 4ks. It’s an addiction now. I’m buying 10 a month. Getting ready to get Once upon a Time in the West, Glory steelcase, Star Trek III steelcase and High Noon next. My girlfriend is complaining about it so I got her Star is Born and Dirty Dancing
haha thats understandable. Im always excited to buy 4K's as well.
Ya thats great! I support libraries by buying from them as well!
😅 I have a massive collection and I also have lots of unopened unused VHS tapes and a brand new still in the box VCR that's about 30 years old. 😂😂😂
I am 30 and have collected all my life or close to it, mainly dvd and games now with in reason, if I don't like it it goes
Awesome! I only hold onto the ones I like as well but I still enjoy blind buying movies when their cheap.
The only reason why I own Blu-ray is the fact that Blu-ray discs don't get scratched like DVDs
That is an extra benefit.
Dvds are so cheap now its actually insane. Its not uncommon to find 2 for a dollar or 1 for a dollar. Keep an eye out for closing sales like at big lots or whatever, I got like 20 brand new dvds for like 2 dollars including season sets.
Ya there are some good deals out there for sure
Now I would like to leave a comment because you are one of the few RUclipsrs in the film community who doesn't necessarily say that DVD is the worst format you can own.
Of course, in times when only the best picture quality counts, especially for those who can no longer see any film grain, then DVD is obviously no longer an option.
But you still have to give credit to the DVD for the fact that 4K resolution is not always the best choice for older films. You often see things that you would rather not have seen or when certain scenes have been digitally altered to suit today's viewing habits and I find that even worse because for me films are always a product of their time and that is how I want to see them in the future, with all their faults
DVD 4LIFE ❤💿

I'm about to be 43 years old and I still have physical dvds and bluray. I even have a roku box "f*ckyou" box I'm about to toss out because I hate ads and forced arbitration, I might consider using kodi on a mini pc to replace my roku.
Yes ads are always frustrating
I use the slipcover as a "file folder" for many of my DVDs, but keep my blu-rays in their cases.
Thanks for sharing!
where are people buying dvds for 1.00?
I actually made a whole video on where to buy movies cheap. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/1YS-5oJ6T5M/видео.htmlsi=XzN2yxYcO0pVnLrc
Some places you can find them cheap are thrift stores, library stores, record stores to name a few.
Swap meets and salvation army stores
Both great options
Called Charity shops in UK, people donate their collections, and they resurface here. Usually 3 for £1... !!😁
Just traded my quest 2 I got about a year and a half ago (paid 250) for a collection of about 400 dvds
Nice! Sounds like a good value!
AMEN
If Netflix put all there shows on dvds i would have 2000 of there good movie adding to my current dvd blu ray collection which stands at 3000 thst i remember slowly still buying more when i can my parents don't understand,
I’m almost 15 and only watch DVDs
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
God bless you God loves you he's more greater than your video is now days and your thinking is now days
You do notice huge difference between 480p and 1080p. 1080p an 4k...not so much.
Thats true. The audio can be much better on 4K though
I come from Drogheda Ireland there's 1shop that sells dvds it's only shop in Drogheda there 50cent and1euro and there second hand
Thanks for sharing! Hopefully there will be more in the future if collecting physical media gains popularity again.
Thank you
You're welcome
Commentary tracks (esp when picked up cheap a thrift stores!)
i preffer dvds , blue rays, because its bad watch movies from netflix, because they take of movies , editing and not last, and is expensive,
Streaming stinks! I’m getting Gremlins in the mail today lol
Awesome! We all need to support physical media to keep it alive, and Gremlins is a fun movie.
I respect your enthusiasm for collecting DVD’s but I can’t get passed the lower picture quality with everything is high def nowadays. I am all for collecting physical medias but if your collecting anything lower than blu rays is a lost cause.
ya DVD's aren't for everyone. Thanks for the comment and for sharing your perspective.
I go also minimum for blu ray. But if I don’t find it on blu ray or 4K I take the dvd. Even if the price is too high for a blu ray or 4K.
Ya price is definitely a factor as well. It's unfortunate when the 4k release of a movie goes out of print and therefore gets very expensive.
I was collecting my favourite movies on dvd. Then when I had seen how much better quality visually and in audio these same movies were on Blu Ray I never looked back. And Disc Doctor's are HORRIBLE for resurfacing discs.
Thanks for sharing
Nope never collecting DVD's ever, they get scratched too easily & my Smallville got ruined...Only purchasing Blu Ray Discs which are scratch resistant.
The most expensive dvds ever made are the Dragon ball Z Dragon Box dvds Fyi.
Thanks for sharing
Not sure? I bought The Sopranos seasons on DVD and they were expensive
buy dvd and put to the garbage these horrible plastic case to avoid these shells full of plastic. since I bought plastic sleeve for my dvd, I reduced 90% of storage . I have them in some kind of box like you choose vinyl in a store. it's nicer and CLEAN. all used dvd you buy have horrible dirty case. Put them to "recyclage" and buy slim sleeve ;) Believe me it's a game changer !
Keep your free whiching DVD's more free whiching than Disney plus is now days
Im sorry you experienced that. I don’t buy from ebay often because of their policies.
i would just do blu ray because dvd are made for crt there 480i
On a good upscaling Blu-ray player, DVD will actually look pretty good enough to entertain most people unless it's younger a person who wants a spotless smooth picture and can't have dirt on movies like most of us are used to seeing.
DA
I dont have 1 dvd
blu rays not dvd’s imo
Thanks for sharing.
been collecting DVDs and laserdisc.
I still buy dvds
Awesome! Keep it up!
