Dvd is a non starter to me because of the lack of lossless audio and even Dolby Atmos tracks that can be found on regular 1080p bluray. Yes they’re cheap but going from 480p to 1080p is a big jump, despite how nice the upscaled DVD may look. One thing to consider format aside is a lot of these in 4K or even 1080 bluray get brand new scans and they fix the previous editions issues. Sometimes it’s the reverse like Pirates of the Caribbean which looks like a wax painting in 4K from what I’ve heard.
Ya I agree dvds are not ideal, but for my own collection i see them as a way to try a movie out to see if i like it before upgrading to a better format, especially if I can get them as cheap as 7 cents each. I also think they are a good way for someone to get into collecting physical media who doesn’t have much of a budget. I haven’t heard that about the pirates of the Caribbean 4K’s. Ill have to try out some of mine soon.
I have a collection of almost 1500 and occasionally I find that a movie was only released on dvd. If that’s the case,I’ll buy it because to me it’s better to have it on that than not at all. If it ends up on blu ray later, then I upgrade.
There is some nice specialised dvd/cd furniture to be had for cheap at the moment. My 450 bluray shelf is solid wood with a sliding front cost £70 and the guy told me it cost him £600 10 yrs ago, but he streams everything now. I use said shelf for my blu rays, and have a 350 disk folder for multi disk tv shows (mainly on dvd) as i mainly like 70's to late 90's british comedy shows as tv. Works well for me.
Yeah I blow my movie budget significantly. lol I used to wait for lower prices on new releases, but lately I’ve been a slip cover addict, so now I buy them right away. There is a significant slip cover market on eBay. The fact that DVD is still the most popular is sad. I wouldn’t start with anything less than Blu-ray. Watching DVD on a 4k screen is not enjoyable. If you want to eventually buy 4k BD’s, just do it now. Getting started in 2024 is harder than 5 years ago. Some titles go out of print and you will pay a premium online.
Just found your channel, really enjoy the passiom for physical media! I'm super new to YT after starting a channel. Cheers dude!
Best of luck to you!

I couldn't agree more!
These are smart ideas!
Thank You! Part of keeping physical media alive is helping other people get started collecting!
