However, I never anticipated what the downsides of this supposedly dream job would be. And I think it’s finally time that I share the truth about being a full-time content creator on RUclips, but also on social media in general. So today, we’re exposing the emotional damage of full-time content creation.

I'm a retired elementary school teacher. Each June, when I saw my students off, I would include a letter with their last report card stating that I hope in their future they'd fail a course, get a flat tire and mess up a job interview. NOT because I wanted to see them fail, but because I wanted them to see that their self-worth was NOT based on grades or their work. Their identity is on how good they are as a person - honesty, integrity, kindness.
THAT is what they will be remembered for. NOT their grades.

So many great points! I’ve been full time on my messaging consulting and coaching brand along with creating content for my business for 8 years.
You can get tied down energetically to those things and lose your inner creativity if you’re not careful. I’ve had to help clients through this and myself.
Hi Katie! I’m usually a quiet watcher but your content has helped me grow my channel to 600 subscribers in just 5 months and I actually have people that engage and comment. It makes me feel like I’m genuinely building a community. It might not be much, but that’s huge for me. I can already sense myself getting sucked into the numbers a bit, I’m watching this early on in my RUclips journey is helping me set some realistic expectations for myself - especially since I don’t intend for this to be a full time gig! I just want you to know how much your advice, videos, and attitude towards creating content has helped me and I’m so glad you’re having this vulnerable conversations!!❤

@@kaitlinstevenss hi! I think what’s worked best for me is being vulnerable. Like, being open about when I’m having bad days or need to pivot on creative projects and I find that, because my audience is also full of neurodivergent perfectionists, I just voice and normalize a lot of the things I think most people on my side of the interment don’t. And In turn, I get folks that comment about similar situations and it feels like we have a genuine support system! I think understanding not just what you are going through, but what your audience is going through, is really important! It shows you’re thinking about them (: I also just subbed to you and will be promptly binging your videos 👀🤍

Seeing my biggest insecurities pop up in my comments is one of the things holding me back from content creation - Iʻm afraid. Mahalo for this. One of the realest content creators out there
Do it! I got my first mean comment recently, and it’s been haunting me! BUT, the sting has been wearing off as well. The process of growing a thicker skin 😮 I also waited so long because I was afraid of putting myself out there, but I don’t regret it. You have something to say! Do it! ❤

So real. Ive been full time since January and you sre so right: it feels like it will all just collapse out from under me if the videos dont keep bringing in the numbers. I describe it as feeling like I'm out on the water in a small boat and its slowly taking on water, and all I have is a small cup to keep scooping out the water, and if I stop to rest Ill go under.
It's tough because it really is the best and most fulfilling job I've ever had, and I dont want to lose it, but theres that part of my brain that insists this won't last.
With any luck that fear might be what keeps us alive here.

Oh this cuts deep. I'm a tiny RUclipsr by any means but I can relate to the metrics addiction. It got so bad I had to force myself to stop posting because I wanted to free myself from the tyranny of views. Obviously, that's not possible for a full-time youtuber but I need to get over that somehow and press forward, Thanks for sharing this great video with us.

So relatable!!! As a RUclipsr (in a totally different niche), I find myself being addicted to the validation too. I catch myself looking up my metrics constantly throughout the day whenever a new video goes live. Thank you for being so open and honest about this Katie. I feel better knowing I'm not the only RUclipsr out there who does this. Maybe I can start to learn how to not beat myself up for being addicted to the validation.

I catch myself spending WAY too much time refreshing my pages to see if the numbers have gone up, and I sometimes have to physically shove my phone away out of reach to break the cycle! Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing these ideas & feelings with us. I will admit that as someone who has recently hit record and am still editing what I’ve recorded, what people say and how well it will do is something I think about. I try to focus on I have a message I feel needs to be heard and even if it helps just one person it will be worth it but I hope it impacts more than 1 person.

I really appreciate you sharing this because it was very relatable. I am so close to my 4000 watch hours, but hit a lull when my computer was in the shop on and off for a month, then I just have battled the mental insecurities and measuring numbers, like you described. I appreciate your vulnerability because it helps not feel alone when it feels so dumb to realize I am caring too much about numbers and having them affect my self esteem.
