I'm 62 years old, and over the many years of bow hunting, I have stuck with this one rule that has helped me get drawn on any deer buck or doe. If I can see a deers eye I do not draw until the eye is not visible to me, either blocked by a bush while the deer is walking, waiting until the deers head is turned, or if he is walking towards me I wait until he passes me this also gives me a great quartering away shot. With the latter in mind I rarely have a shooting lane right in front of my stand. Most are cut at a 45° on either side of me for a quartering away shot. A deers eye is programmed to see movement, and if you move within its vision they're going to see you.
Pay attention to where the sun is going to be for your morning or evening setup. You have to go with the wind direction, but if you can get the sun behind you for that time of day, you don't have to have the sun in your eyes, and the animal will have to look toward the sun to see you. Also, you can get away with more movement on breezy days, especially when the leaves are still on. If you have to move your bow, only move when the deer is moving. They are less adept at picking up your movement when they are also moving. Deer season starts here in Kentucky in five weeks!
Hunt the edge. The edge doesn't mean where woods meet agriculture. Edge is where the thick meets open timber close to ridges and saddles. 40 years of bowhunting, I learned early on where to set up. I still live to that set up.
@@ML-ks2lj I accidentally found the bachelor group I jumped as I was leaving. They crossed the creek into a crp field. Standing in the open. They don’t have many corridors and the bedding is on private. The old lady doesn’t hunt and won’t let anyone hunt. I swear there’s deer in there I’ve never seen.
Thank you THP! This video is right on point for me. Alot of hunting videos help get someone from a skill of 5 to 7, but there aren't many that take someone from a 2 to a 5. These tips may be obvious to most hunters, but they are invaluable to new hunters who are trying to learn without a mentor. I especially appreciated the scenario based tips (stand setup and draw timing). Explaining your thought process in real time while seeing the exact environment made a very easy to follow example. The pointing out the exact trees and saying why they were good stands (or not) was fantastic. I've always wanted to know how to find good food sources and know if they are hitting it recently. I hunt big woods with no oaks or ag. I would personally find a "hands on" video like this helpful in regards to identifying browse, and how you find the general area to start looking. I love what you guys are doing! God bless. And congrats to the newly weds!
I’m loving the “off season” videos. Keep em coming. This will be my second season of bow hunting. I wasn’t able to make it happen last year but I’m confident this year I can get it done. I’ve been shooting 4-5 days per week.
😂 that when to draw was epic! I've forgotten my bow and even my boots. I did kill a 140 in my crocs when it was 17⁰ was cold, but they're dead quite to walk in, lol
Here in N. Missouri and can't wait till season opener, its my sons first year with a bow and he got his first fork horn with a rifle last year. He's lookin for a clean 6 this year he says😂 We should do good, we are seeing some dandy's already🇺🇸🫡 Good luck fellas and God bless❤
Good tips boys. Glad you put this stuff out there. You'd be surprised how many people don't think about them things. And God knows we all forget stuff here and there😅
Here's another good one for people that don't think of gor experienced or new hunters also is when using a fixed pin sit from a tree or on the ground when u practice draw from your set up look at each pin and see where it hits at 10 20 30 or however far they are set for and see if any of your closer range pins hit on a tree limb or brush or anything like that because depending on the farther distance u r shooting if your short distance pin is on something u will hit that limb or brush before the arrow even gets to the animal
Some great tips, thank you. I’m getting to the age where my dad’s letting me manage my own portion of the woods and I’ve gotten to use your tips and tricks in previous years.
Also after the shot to visually mark the tree you last see the deer run by it looks totally different when you get on the ground. When I was young we didn’t have all these great videos to learn from.
This is a great comment and to this day after 25 years of bow hunting I still remind myself in the moment to mark that spot and find a key characteristic spot to look for because you are so right it looks completely different
Great tips!! I keep one release in my bow case and my spare in my pack. One thing to make sure and do is adjust your backup release and shoot it when you practice to make sure it is adjusted properly so if you have to use it....
@@johndyer9232 I left my Broadhead quiver at the house drove an hour and a half, hiked in set my sticks, got in my stand. Went to knock and arrow and all I had were field points……. I went to the bar.
Wise words gentlemen. I'd also add, when you put your release on, cycle it to make sure it works. Ive had my trigger fall out while on a hunt, and didnt realize until I was pursuing a buck.
I agree. Not saying they can't break too, that's why I like tru fire (or other high quality brand). My uncle had one for about 15 years and then gave it to me I've had It for 11 years. I've never bought a release as that's the first one I ever got.
Checking equipment is key! Had a screw back out on my bow a few days ago and luckily it was in the backyard not out in the woods. Used my Allen key set that's in my case and a drop of Super glue to keep it in place for the tile being.
I hunted out of a blow down oak for around 20 years on public in Central Wisconsin, on a folding camp stool. It was on such a great run for deer. Filled alot of tags ground hunting public there, a couple times guys walked by and never knew I was there.
Hey Guys. Always giving us solid information. Very much appreciated. I'm gonna be hunting from the ground a little more this season. I have a few spots where I got the ground cleared out in little patches of trees, so I'll be tucked up in the shadows a bit. I just have to play the wind right.
So much truth to the slightly quartering to or away from you. Had a doe walk maybe 8 yards in front of me and I released my arrow thinking she was broadside. Upon inspecting the entry and exit holes she was way more quartered to me than I thought. Just goes to show how much you can miss when the time from seeing the deer to your only shot opportunity being 25 seconds.
Y'all always have great information in your videos! Kudos on that! Something I would add as far as when to draw is always be aware of other eyes in the area. If that doe or young buck you weren't gonna shoot sees you draw and blows out of there the mature buck isn't gonna wait around to see what's going on. Also, choosing your draw weight is important. Just because you can draw a 70+ lb bow doesn't mean it's ideal. Drawing lower weight and being able to hold it back for extended time is more important than being faster
I'm here for the tips, but I am also here to say thank you! Thank you and Bear for the Adapt Plus. I got back into bow hunting a few years ago, after taking about a 9 year hiatus. Shoulder surgeries just wouldn't allow me to do it. When I got back into it, I was shooting and old legacy bow around, but was having a lot of problems. Heard some good this about the Adapt, so I went out to get one and got the Adapt Plus instead. Got tuned and hit the grind practicing with it. What a bow! Smooth draw, great balance (to me) and the accessories are worth their weight in hunting. Opening week of the season, harvested a nice 7 pointer @25 yards or so. Followed that up with a huge management doe. Im shooting somewhere in between 55-60 lbs, and it's everything I need. They told me it was a mid-range budget bow, but I beg to differ. So thanks for all that you do to try and help the hunting community. I am a disabled Vet so it was great to find an affordable bow that has big price quality.
Thank you for covering ground hunting. I can't sit in a saddle because of back problems. This will be my second year with a bow. Last year the closest I got was 80 meters but tge deer was in an open field and I was at tge edge of the brush. They caught my wind and blew before running off. Only deer I saw all season
