- Easy DIY at home Assembly Line for making face masks.
No elastic? I have a suggestion. Got old t-shirts? Perfect!!!
DO WHAT YOU CAN, WHERE YOU ARE, WITH WHAT YOU HAVE!
Some of you may be making stacks of face masks for loved ones, to donate, or to sell. As you can tell by some of my previous videos, I rarely make only one of something. So, I wanted to share MY ideas on a small shelter in place assembly line.
Fabric and interfacing size, I used 9"x 8". For smaller face 8"x7".
Stay well, wash your hands, and start sewing!!!

I do a similar pocket but close one end and keep other reopen for removal before washing 🌺
Great tip! That's what I am doing now, too. Thanks for the suggestion!
People don’t like hand sewing & People don’t like being quarantined but how could someone not like this tutorial.
Thank you, Marian.
I heard once "You can be the sweetest peach in the orchard and someone is not going to like peaches"
Beautiful work! Thanks so much! Making some for family and friends right now. Stay safe! :-) xoxo
I love it! Thank you for sharing your talent and blessing your family and friends.
Great video glad you did share your knowledge 😊
Elsa, you are welcome!
Nice ! Thanks for sharing! Stay safe, like how you add the wire I haven't figured out the easiest way until you showed this.
Glad it helped
Thank you for the video, I have been trying to find one just like this. Your great at teaching people that isn't to formiler to sewing. Very clear! Now I'm able to make a bunch for my friends and family. Have a good day an be safe.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Omg, I used that same fabric for my masks, the one with the squares
How fun!!!
I don't go out often but when I do, that's the mask I wear and I always get compliments on it!!!
Hi there! I have watched this video 6 times now and still can't understand about inserting the little pocket for the wire. I too have some assembly line experience so I get it that you move fast. However, your video seems to me to be putting more emphasis on speed and producing and your hands move so fast I still cant figure out about the little wire pocket. PLEASE...PLEASE....Can you do a video focusing on the how to of your face mask and slow down so all of us slower sewers can get it. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who have visited your video on this and after a few minutes just tried to find a different one because yours is too fast.
I will try to do that. Did you know that you can slow the video down? If you are on a Laptop or PC-on the lower right under the video you will see a gear and on a phone you will see 3 dots in the upper right corner. Click on either one of those symbols and you will see "Playback Speed". There are 5 choices, from slowing down to speeding up.
***Those only work in the video NOT in the ads!!!*** During the ads you will not see those options.
I hope this helps.
@@mywithallmyart thank you , I didnt know that. About speed.
@@mywithallmyart correct?..beginning (1 1/2)---1---1/2---1---1/2---1---end(1 1/2)
@@mywithallmyart thank you for showing this video. Awesome

Do anyone have any free fabric and elastic make sure it 100 percent cotton and can you spandex thanks everyone God bless
No, I am sorry I don't!
Thank you for explaining everything. Beginner sewer here. Good tip on lining it up the fabric with the needle foot
Glad I could help
Good video.
Awesome video!!!! If you sew one end of the wire pocket closed first, sew down the tube part and before you cut your thread put in your wire. Push the wire to the other end then pivot and close. One full step of cutting thread then going back to the machine to sew the one beginning open end closed and cutting thread again. More time saved if my explanation makes sense, that is.
I also use beginning and ender scrap fabrics to save a bundle of thread and time. I finally broke down and tried these 'scrap fabric' at the beginning and ending of my project where I could and I was shocked, literally, by the result. I've sewn 40+ years so old habits.... if you've not tried it then test it yourself.
Thanks for your video, I can't imagine sewing one mask at a time.

Hey, Chicka, that's a great idea!!! I will definitely give it a try!
Thank you very much for this great DIY video. 👍🌼🇺🇸
Thanks for the compliment!!!
I have also watched so many videos and this, by far, is one of the best! I owned a screenprinting and embroidery company for 13 years and so I really appreciate your home assembly skills! I will definitely adopt your process. I do have one question about the nonwoven interfacing. Do you have thoughts about substituting? I used pellon for stabilizing embroidery and this is readily available whereas the interfacing seems hard to come by - is the pellon material a reasonable substitute, or no? Thanks again!
I think pellon would be great as a stabilizer. Yeah, just about everything like that is gone in our town.
I pleated before I sewed two pieces together. Finishes nicely.
Great idea
That's a great idea
Thank you. That is so much easier . I have been making them one at a time. And the way you put in the wire. I have been making them the hard way!!!!
Glad I could help!
I have been making 300 at one time for a prison in our state. I just take it a step at a time and i am working ALONE
WOW!!! 300! That's amazing and I know that is a huge blessing for those at the prison.
@@mywithallmyart yes thats not counting the ones i make for the hospital and doctors office and family and friends. I have always been tbe seamstress in the town so i just ended up getting the jobs of all that asked. I make a lot of caps and masks as well for my neighbors and friends. I have had a sewi g business for most of my life. I have been sewing since i was 5 years old. Now im 72......long time huh????? Custom Sewing and Alterations....i really enjoy your videos too.
That IS an N95 mask. Good as GOLD! Anyway, I love your pattern and approach to making masks. I need to make some for my husband and I when we are out getting groceries. What a wonderful pattern! Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you! I wear that fun one with the words on it when I have to go out. I always get compliments. Enjoy!
@@mywithallmyart that would be my choice too , i think its so cute...i got cutsie ones too for donating , who wants a stuffy mature one when working.hahaha
You can get dusk mask that are not N95, that appears to be dusk mask. N95 also states it.
Just FYI, it is not marked N95. I am not using it. Just showing it as an example. LOL!!!
I love your videos! Super helpful to this beginner...I've been doing pretty good with the scrub caps, but the masks are getting me. I try to do the pleats and the come undone when the go under my presser foot making them uneven , any tips to keep them from unfolding while sewing?? Thanks!
The onl suggestion I have is to go slow
Hi again!! I found s comment that pointed to 4:41 re: the pocket for the wire and just rewatched the whole thing again....AND I GOT IT THIS TIME!!! Thank you...
Awesome!!!
That was totally awesome. I'm a beginner at sewing. My biggest problem is threading the sewing machine. Every time I attempt to start sewing, my thread gets tight and the bobbin just balls up at the foot of the needle. 🤷🏽♀️
Look at your owner's manual to see the loops and hooks that your thread needs to travel through. Make sure the needle is inserted properly. Your needle should be flat on one side and also have a groove. The side with the groove is the the side that the thread is inserted. Also refer to your manual about the filling and inserting your bobbin. And I almost guarantee that there are YT videos that can help you with that.
I've seen so many videos, thank you for your easy and straight forward approach. I will be using this one.
Thanks!!!
The hairbands will be a problem as ear loops when the decoration starts to chafe ears. Otherwise good tips on assembly line mask making. I do something similar. But I start with making fabric ties - for when when I run out of elastics.
Yes, hairbands are not the best options but if you only wear them for a run to the grocery store... I was just suggesting alternative ideas.
Fabric ties are a great idea, too. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You for sharing your wisdom and technique to help others. The masks are cute and practical. Laundering them will be a breeze.
Your are so welcome. I am glad you like it!
How long are the t-shirt ties?
15" to18" long!
did the head bands you cut at the fuse point work for the ear loops ? because they look like they are long and would just fall off , i did a bunch of mask , i did the cutting and buying the material and did the medal for the nose , which i used strips of aluminum foil pan from the dollar tree and folded them to be about 1/4 inch wide 4 inches long and folded the ends just a tiny bit so no sharpness, wasn't real fun but i got 70 of them done, anyway , my friend is doing the sewing. she used elastic 1/4 inch wide and did a few of the masks so i could check them out , they all fell off my ears except one that fit her real good , killed my ears by pulling them forward so much . I bought some headbands like you have from dollar tree as well and put them for her to use when the elastic runs out , but they look even longer then the length she used that fell of my ears. so that is why i am asking if they worked. if so or if not what length should the loop for the ears be about?
What a great idea about the foil pans from the dollar tree!!! We can get creative when we have to!!! The head bands fit different than elastic. They worked great for my sons but it was a bit loose for me but doesn't fall off. I made another one today and shortened the band by an inch. That was better. Different size faces and heads!
70 masks! That is amazing. YOU ROCK!!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼You are great ...love it 🥰 Thank you so much. Stay safe 🙏🥰💞
Thank you! You too!
I have made a few masks and your little pocket for the wire is brilliant. Thank you!
Thank you!!!
U stay safe too.
Thanks!!!
Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
Didn’t see how you made the pocket for the wire.
gaylemae the instructions for the wire pocket start at 4:41.
Looks like Linda answered your question. Starts at 4:41 on the time.
Thank you Linda!!! You are awesome!!!
HOW LONG DID YOU MAKE THE T-SHIRT TIES?
Katherine Johnson I make mine 18 inches long.
I really didn't measure it but probably 15" to 18" each side. I think Christina commented that she made hers 18"
How long are you cutting your ties? And you are using the headbands cut in half, so 1 per mask?
The ties made from t-shirts are about 15" to 18" long each. The elastic headbands are cut in half so yes 1 per mask. For me, I need them a little less than half. It fits but just a bit loose. So, when I breathe while wearing my mask, my glasses fog up!!! LOL!!! Of course, I breathe!!!
I like to sew them like that. So much faster. I normally do about 30 at a time. 🌺
WOW!!! You rock!!!
Can I use heat bond on the fabric as interfacing?
Yes I would like to know too.
I assume that it is the heat n bond interfacing. Then, yes. Adhere it to the outer fabric. If I were to use heat bond fusible WEB, I would sandwich it between another lightweight piece of fabric and fuse it together with the outer layer. I hope this makes sense.
You actually don't really need it but I heard somewhere that it might add another layer of protection. Still not N95 grade protection.
Thank you.
Thanks for all the pointers! You mentioned your previous business, was this around Abilene?
Yes it was! It was in Snyder
Thank you! Great video! Great tips! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!!!
👍🏽
Thanks
You are awesome.👍☕
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the tutorial it really helps.
Glad it helped
Can you tell about your needle and machine? When I try to sew the masks using sheets my machine has trouble going over all the layers when doing the pleats
Mine is a heavy duty Singer. The needle is a regular mid weight for cotton needle. I suggest you trim out as much excess as you can.
thank you so much- for generously sharing your knowledge in the video and taking time to answer. Much appreciated!!
I am deaf, closed caption too fast on the part about pleating, 1 1/2 or what?
mark your mask at 1 1/2", 1", 1/2" 1", 1/2", 1, 1 1/2". The pleats are made by folding the 1" spaces in half. So, it will be 1 1/2", then a pleat, a 1/2" space, a pleat, a 1/2" space, a pleat, then 1 1/2". I sure hope that makes sense.
You can also slow the video down by changing the playback speed. On a laptop or pc there is a gear icon at the lower right of the video. Click and you will see "Playback Speed" There you will have several choice for the speed. On a phone there are 3 little dots in the upper right corner. Same options.
Bobbie Sue Sanders . It was to fast and confusing for me also and I can hear. My daughter is deaf also.
Elastic measurements pls.
6 to 7"
Don't close the wire in! It will make it difficult to wash the mask.
You can wash with metal in, just like underwire bra
I will put mine in a lingerie bag. I don't wear it very often because I don't go out except maybe twice a week. Granny, you can leave one end open and remove it if you want to.
Great video thanks for the Tutorial
You're welcome!!!
This is awesome!! Loved your method
Thanks so much!
Thanks great video
You are so welcome!!!
Where you from
Texas!!!
thank you, good tutoriall
Glad it was helpful!
I love how thorough you are Nathalie ❤️❤️❤️ and so talented and caring too!
Thank you, Miss Sandy!!!
Perfect
Thanks, Bb
Thank you! I have been looking for a method to do assembly line prepping...how can this be done for a mask with a different shape (not rectangular)?
Cut multiples. Stack 4 or 6 layers of fabric together and cut. Then, let's say that they are the ones with the curved front: match your fabric and stitch all the front seams one after the other. Then clip apart and if the next step is sewing across the upper edge. stitch all of the upper edges on after another then clip apart. Keep going. I hope this helps!
Blessings,
Nathalie
Sew awesome, what gauge wire. Thank you!
18 gauge. 98 cent wire in the Walmart jewelry section. Soft wire.
