    Hi, One day I was exposed to Covid but I was wearing an N95 and it saved me! I am a traveling nurse and I have traveled to three different hospitals since the epidemic started. I have tried different patterns with Halyard h600 fabric to replace some of the mask because of PPE shortages. Since I have gotten older and husband has pasted and children long gone and grown-up, I put my heart and soul into work. In my younger day, sewing and making my own patterns was a huge past time. But I have long retired my sewing machine that had many miles on it. As soon as the virus hit the United States, I knew what I had to do. So I pulled it out and dusted it off. I made patterns that worked very well but never as good as yours!!! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to reconstruct this wonderful mask that I can give away to all my fellow nurses far and wide. So well needed. Thank you thank you! You are Sewing Champion!

    Great tutorial. One of the best. Thank you. The only 2 things I will do differently is: Replace the batting with an extra layer of cotton instead, for anyone with asthma. 2. Measure the binding pieces 2.5 x 4 or 5” to create channels so the cord or elastic can be changed as it gets worn, or if the wearer prefers elastic, ribbon or paracord with cord stopper to tie at the back. This allows this great pattern design to become more versatile for people that work in different situations. Thanks again.

    This is a great pattern. I've made five already and these will replace all my old masks. No more glasses fogging up - I can't believe it! This may be due to the aluminum strips I finally purchased but the pattern is part of it, too. It is so much more comfortable to not have fabric right on my nose and mouth.

    • @CarlaMWard-

      actually I think the no fogging is because of the wadding absorbing the moisture well at least I hope it is as Im about to tackle my first mask tomorrow and I wear glasses, I couldnt get the same quilters wadding here in Australia so I hope the pure unbleached cotton one I do have will do the trick.

    I made one! Such great explanation! This video is one of the best I have seen so far. I made the mask and it came out sooo good. I love how spacious it is between the mouth and the fabric. I can breathe a lot better than the other traditional masks. The traditional ones are almost always touching the mouth and provide no space between the mouth and the fabric. I hand sewed mine since I don't have a sewing machine and I am super happy with the results. I appreciate you taking your time and knowledge and showing us all how to make one of these. Bravo!

    These are EXCELLENT masks! I've received spontaneous comments from multiple medical professionals - one was a complete stranger - about the fit and coverage of this mask. I made several during spring & summer 2020, and now it's spring 2021 and I'm creating more.
    I have made the following modifications: 1) I use non-woven interfacing instead of batting, partially because I had no batting on hand; 2) I changed the straps on some to go around the head (instead of behind the ears) - this is more secure & comfortable for longer term use (work, shopping, school), and doesn't interfere with my glasses. I also like having some around-the-ears masks on hand for quick use, like answering the door.
    For those who want to double mask, this mask makes an excellent cover mask for disposable masks of all kinds.

    I love this pattern and have been going crazy making these. Everyone loves them! I've found that I can easily get two masks out of a fat quarter, as long as the fabric doesn't have a pattern in the wrong direction. Also, I hate pins and I don't pin at all with this. For the nose, I purchase self-adhesive bridges from Amazon! No pinning! I just chalk the lines around to know where to sew. For the ear loops, I use scotch tape to hold them! No pins! I just love the pattern and how beautiful they turn out. I probably have had the most trouble with the binding, and I think that's just me. Thank you so much!

    • @paulabogert6050
      @paulabogert6050 4 года назад

      Hi: I see your comment about self-adhesive strips for the nose: do you remove the paper strip from the metal band and apply it adhesive-side down to the INSIDE of the mask (between the layers of fabric?)

    • @paulabogert6050
      @paulabogert6050 4 года назад

      Indeed the binding---and folding in those layers---is the most difficult part. But it finishes the edges so well. I have begun topstitching from the FRONT of the mask and capturing edges that have been pinned down on the back layer. Inside, you might also consider using the finished selvedge edge of your fabric (if it looks good), to skip having to fold that fussy hem on the inside.

    • @patsydf
      @patsydf 4 года назад

      I use quilting clips, paper clips will also suffice but don't push the whole length onto the fabric as the rough end catches on the fabric.

    I made these some time ago and I need to make more now. This is the only mask my husband is happy to wear. Does not fog his glasses, no gaps around his face, comfortable. He loves the aluminum for his nose and he can both breathe and speak clearly. We both love that they have filters that are washable with the mask and are made from quality quilting fabric. They make us feel safe and for all of this we thank you. Bless you. ❤️

    thank you so much Dora for the pattern and clear and concise instructions! I've made several different types of masks from RUclips videos and like how this one is a really good fit, and once familiar with it, it can be done quite quickly in batches. very much appreciate your time and trouble. I'm using Pellon Shir Tailor non-woven fusible interface lining instead of the batting one or two layers depending on how much body you prefer, plus plastic coered metal coffee ties that come with self adhesive on , and i just iron an extra piece of interface over them to give some padding over the nose bridge. I also use a craft bead on the elastic and make it a bit longer at 10" to allow for friends and family to adjust elastic to fit. after our General Practice confirmed today that anyone going for a Doctors' appointment or to collect a prescription of have blood tests etc must wear a mask, it will be very handy to have such a good fitting mask. Thank You!

    I also use fabric glue to glue the binding on with the elastic rather than stitching the edges just for ease. I can wear these masks all day with a good seal, wear my glasses, wear lipstick without it getting on the mask, and can breathe really well.

    I'd like to say thanks so much for this pattern! I made these masks for my husband and myself, and we used them while we were in Seattle last week. (I had surgery at Virginia Mason Hospital there. I was required to wear a mask outside my hospital room, and my husband was required to wear one no matter where he was in the hospital, although the staff was pretty relaxed about whether he wore one 100% of the time when it was just the two of us.) I received compliments on our masks from everyone. I was very happy with the care at VM, and to thank them I will be making more masks (as soon as I can move around a bit better; I currently have an 8-inch scar from just above my belly button just below my breast bone, and am pretty sore!). I appreciate how easy this pattern is -- once I made the first one, successive masks went really quickly. I enjoy seeing them come together so quickly! Again, thanks so much!!

    I've now made around 50 of these, and lots more coming! I've made a couple hundred of the 'surgical style' with pleats, but when I saw this video I had to try it! It absolutely fits better. I have a smaller face and make this pattern at 90-95% for me and smaller faces. On the smaller ones, I move the stitching line to 2" down from the top instead of 2.5". The original had the stitching line almost at my mouth and I wanted it closer to my nose tip. I am making them with a filter pocket: I use the front just as Dora has it, but instead of cutting that main piece on a fold, I cut one, plus ¼" seam allowance on top and bottom, and then I cut a 14" x 10" piece of a different fabric for the lining and fold it in half, and cut a 3" piece and fold that in half. The narrow strip (1.5" now folded) is sewn to the bottom of the front piece (3 layers of raw edges with right sides together), and the larger piece (now 7") is sewn to the top. They overlap at the bottom of the mask. This gives me 3 layers of cotton with a pocket for a removable HEPA filter so I don't use the batting. With the stitching line across the front, the mask still holds it shape just fine. (but don't stitch that stitching line through the lining or you won't be able to get a filter into the pocket). You can also make the lining a single layer for the hot weather, but will lose some protection. Also, if your sewing machine can't handle all the layers, a single layer lining might work for you. For me, I find the original pattern pushes down a bit too hard on my nose. With a metal nose bridge it just doesn't need to be that tight. So I adjusted the angle cut out of the top corners leaving the top edge of the mask a ½" longer and this fixed it for me. The final adjustment I have made was to make the binding strips channels so I can run a cord through them instead of the elastic ear loops (ouch). Dora, I can't thank you enough! This is an amazing pattern.

    This was a great tutorial. I made one with bias tape ties instead of elastic. For the nose piece I used the bendy thing off a bag of coffee beans. That worked really well. The extra length of that bendy piece gives a lot of structure to the top half of the mask and keeps it against my face so my glasses don't fog up. I've made one mask and am currently working on a second.

The way you presented the various steps by telling us what to do next and then holding up the mask with that step already done was so very professional! No wasted time, no confusion--it was absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to try this because not only do my glasses fog up with the mask I currently have, I also feel like I can't get enough oxygen when I breathe. At my doctor's office yesterday, my oxygen saturation level read 97--without a mask it's 99 or 100, proof positive that I really wasn't getting enough oxygen. Again, thank you!

    I have made about 30 of these masks for all my friends, family, and neighbors and everyone loves them. It is so much easier to talk in this mask than most others. No one seems to like the fabric right up against their mouth and this pattern seems to give you just that little extra room to speak and breathe. I did find the batting to be quite heavy and hot, so I substituted batting with a featherweight stabilizer. I wasn't sure how that was going to work out, but it did just fine and still allows the mask to hold its shape, which is great! Many thanks for teaching this tutorial and allowing me to download the pattern for it. So many people are benefiting from your kindness and generosity and I just wanted you to know.

Or, a couple of layers of your average non-woven polypropylene shopping bag (has a dot matrix pattern), it's the same material they make N95 masks out of (depending on the thickness, just add more layers if too thin). Cheap and readily available.

    Thank you for the mask video and template! I’ve been making masks for a few months and this is the go to for my work team. It’s breathable and easy to make. My cashiers have to wear them all day and they are the most comfortable for them, for breathing and speaking. I modified it slightly with channels on the ends for the elastic so they can change it out when they need to.

    • @marcthompson3659
      @marcthompson3659 4 года назад

      LaNecia Nixon Do you have more information on how you made that channel for the elastic? I’ve been wanting to modify this template to include a channel instead of the binding so that the elastic fit can be tailored or adjusted. If you don’t get the length of the elastic right, the fit and comfort of this mask can vary greatly.

    • @chocol8cutie
      @chocol8cutie 4 года назад +1

      Marc Thompson hi, sorry as i’m just now seeing this question! For the elastic casing i use 2 pieces of fabric cut 2” x 5”, I attach it on sides, one on each end, right sides facing, it will wrap over the ends of the mask. Sewing it into place, I then fold the fabric over to cover the raw edges, making about a 1/4” wide channel. I sew that down then feed the elastic through. Probably not a great description but there a ton of pleated face masks that incorporate the channel I refer to. It’s one more step to this mask but so worth it, imho

  • @caroldean4417

    excellent! i think you could extend the life of the masks by covering the metal nose bridge with a thin piece of fabric tape. this would prevent the sharp edges from rubbing the fabric and escaping.

    Great pattern! It has good face coverage and "seals" well. I can talk while wearing it without it moving around, something I was looking for because I have to teach this fall. I made one small change, however, to make the ear loops adjustable. I attached the top of each ear loop as indicated in the pattern, but left the bottom loose. I then sewed a small piece of elastic with a vertical slit at the bottom corners of the mask to create a "buckle." I cut each ear loop to 10 inches, and then threaded them through the elastic buckle. This allows the wearer to adjust the ear loops for a more individual fit.

    Excellent VIDEO...Throughly done and effective teaching tool. My Husband has Breathing problems and the Cotton Sheeting I used to make his masks are difficult to breath thru. The Article shared by a post below from U Chicago was very helpful. I have to sample fabrics again....and then try your mask. One thing I will share with everyone...my Son whom is very critical decided I had to use 2 long pieces of elastic to go around his head and the neck for the best fit for him at work. Often he has goggles on, Hat and with a mask makes a lot to wear for 8-12 hours. He also has trouble breathing thru the Cotton Sheeting that I used. My first masks also had the Nose wire and filter pocket.

    This is an amazing pattern. I have made A BUNCH of them over the last couple of months (maybe 200 or so).
    I have a couple of suggestions. In order to conserve expensive fabric, add a seam allowance at the top of the pattern and cut one of the decorative fabric and one of a tightly woven white or beige fabric then seam them together and press. Quilt backing fabric works beautifully. In addition, I use longer ear loops and use the plastic adjusters that you can find at Amazon or on EBAY. Since I'm really small, I printed the pattern at 85%, and it fits perfectly that way. My husband likes 100% and another friend prefers 90%. I had to experiment with it a bit, but now that sizes are established, everyone gets the size he/she wants. I've been using the stainless nose wires from Advanced Manufacturing because they are indestructable and hold up better than the aluminum (which I couldn't find around here). I have started using Pellon fusible interfacing instead of the batting, and that works too. (Again because when I started out, I was using materials on hand at the time).
    This pattern is a game changer. It keeps the mask out of your mouth and away from the nose so that it is only minimally uncomfortable. Thank you thank you thank you for this pattern.

    Your video is wonderful. I'm making the mask tomorrow. Have tried several patterns but am going to try yours. I'm claustrophobic and wearing a mask makes it worse and increases my anxiety. I find that chewing gum when wearing a mask helps with them both! My mouth doesn't dry out as much and the spearmint flavor (my favorite flavor) not only refreshes my mouth but breathing the spearmint into my sinuses helps as well. Chewing gum helps take my mind off the fact that I'm wearing a mask. In addition, several times throughout the day (in the morning and before I go to bed, and when I get home from picking up groceries/getting gas), I moisten some tissues (one for each nostril) with a nasal saline solution and gently twist it inside each nostril -- I feel the saline/salt helps to keep my nose clear of dust, allergens, and germs! To make your own saline solution: 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in 1 cup of warm water. Store in a clean container or refill your saline bottle. I'm hoping your mask design will alleviate the claustrophobic feeling I experience when wearing a mask.

    Just made your mask and it is the best! I’ve made several different types of masks, some are more comfortable than others but yours is the best. I live in Florida and it is hot everywhere you go. It is nice that this mask has room inside so you can talk without your mouth fighting the fabric. Now that they are slowly opening some of the outdoor venues here, we quickly realized that a comfortable, breathable mask is a must. I did eliminate the batting and replaced it with light weight interfacing...because it’s too hot for wearing outside when it’s 90 degrees. Plus we are not wearing them in a hospital setting. Thanks for the free pattern. I’m going to make them for all my family and friends...perfect for wearing to a Disney Park.

      Aussie Mummy....I used lightweight fusible interfacing. I did end up cutting the lining fabric away after the fact on the lower portion only, mask still kept its shape, I also cut away the part the goes under the chin....so the mask just sits nicely on your face....it makes is easier to talk as your jaw is not restricted. It also allows for more airflow....I know that defeats the purpose of the mask. At this point I call It my decoy mask as masks are required everywhere in public here in Florida. I am complying....but staying comfortable. This is still a very easy mask to make.

To stop specs fogging up I use an anti fog spray, available from Amazon, opticians, motor cycle outlets etc. Self adhesive metal strips are also now widely available for a close fit around the nose.

    Thank you for sharing this great pattern. I like the fit very much and it allows one to breath more easily. One thing to note however is that medical research has recommended that polypropylene material should be used as a filter since cotton batting apparently allows the micron virus particles to pass through. So instead of cotton batting, I used polypropylene. If the extra bulk didn't bother you however, I assume you could still also use the cotton batting for comfort.

Another option is Pellon 911FF there are other nonwoven fabrics also. Tomorrow I will be making this one. I have tried so many patterns you wouldn’t believe it. It ranked the product based on several factors such as protection, breathability, temperture, etc., and ironically, 100+ thread count cotton bed sheets were the best alternative to HEPA material! For disposable filters, good quality paper towels or shop towels ranked best!

  • @angryswan36
    @angryswan36 4 года назад +24

    This is a great design, really simple and I like the shape. Just thinking about the use of batting and breathability; If the batting feels too hot then try using interfacing instead, it’s much lighter. It can give the cotton outer fabric some body when ironed on, and offers some protection because it’s a non-woven fabric. I read somewhere recently that natural silk or chiffon are great ‘liner’ fabrics for filtration purposes because they catch and retain small particles and prevent them getting on to the cotton. For the nose wire, I have been using garden wire (the thin wire coated in plastic, for attaching plants to bamboo) - I cut 4 pieces and then encase it in electrical tape. It’s cheap and easy to find. Also, the wire closure on (extremely expensive) coffee works brilliantly (enough for 2 masks) and I just discovered that the aluminium on wine bottles is excellent thickness! When you open your wine bottle, just carefully snip off the aluminium and trim it, fold it to shape and ensure there are no sharp edges. My machine can sew through it, but you can also do as this tutorial suggests, and sew around it. The batting will make it comfortable. To make ties, you can use bias binding or use the same fabric as the mask; if it’s not cut on the bias it won’t matter for ties as it’s not being used on curved seams. Simply cut 4 long narrow strips of fabric 18” long and 1.5” wide. (2” width works too). Fold it in half longways to find the centre. Press. Open it. Fold the raw edges toward the centre pressed line. Press. Bring these folds together to make a long thin strap, and press. Stitch close to the long edge. Ensure the short raw edge is folded in on itself before you sew, to avoid fraying. To assemble, attach your straps where the elastic goes. There will be multiple layers to stitch through, so be careful, it might be wise to stitch in place rather than pin so that the straps are really secure. Alternatively, use fabric cut on the bias, and use it along all edges of the mask, creating your ties at the same time. This method is great for enclosing raw edges but also it provides extra shape and helps the mask fit the chin and nose snugly.

    This is a wonderful, thorough tutorial. I love how you don't go to the machine but show us how it should look after sewn. Thank you, too, for providing a mask pattern. You are kind to do so. I've sewn so many different kinds of mask and haven't found the perfect one. I'm going to give this one a try.

    What a blessing! This is by far the most comfortable, quickest to make, and doesn't fog my glasses and feel like I can't breath! A+++ Will be making more now for this is the best! Excited to make more!!!

      Does the batting feel comfortable? To me it seems it might be too hot for Summer...

      ANA I've been reading posts and I see that some women stated the mask is a bit big. Did you feel it was to big or did you modify the size?

    Finally, a DIY mask I actually want to make that addresses my biggest issues with DIY masks - Fit & Coverage!!! I’ll try this out next week :)

      For me there are three -fit, coverage, and breathability. We live in a hot, humid climate and I need to be able to breathe AND not have a dripping, sweating face underneath the mask after wearing all day at school. I’m hoping this one fits the bill.

      Deb, would you say this face mask fits a medium size woman's face? I've read various ladies on here state that the mask was big in size, did you have to modify the size or did you cut the fabric out of the original template pattern that was provided?

      Mireya Kearney, I have made over 200 of these, always the same size. The only discrepancy there might be is the ear straps. I solve this by using 1/4” elastic with a toggle on each strap.

    Excellent pattern! Excellent concise instruction in this video and very easy to make and SUPER comfortable! I covered the elastic with fabric to enhance the look and comfort! Using care with your cuts on a fat quarter I had exactly enough material left to make the elastic covers! Thank you for sharing your talent!

    I have tried so many different patterns for masks and this is by far the best one. My glasses don't fog up anymore and with the inner lining, I feel that it is more protective. I am not a very good seamstress but you are a great teacher. Thank you!

    Thank you for sharing! I currently use a pattern similar to this style mask, I will try yours because I like the way you explain sewing the sides to give it the shape.

    Thank you! This is the first mask pattern (we've tried all of them I think!) that is comfortable for my husband with no huge gaps at the top. Also, we already had N95 masks for the extreme pollen here, but they have a vent - these fit over an N95, without crushing. Thank you again and again!

    I have made many surgical type masks with pleats to give away and wanted something that was shaped better. I tried folding several ways but nothing worked. You figured it out and it is very generous of you to share. Thank you very much. I put casings on my masks and feed the elastic through the casing. The recipient can knot the elastic at a length to fit them and pull the knot into the casing so it doesn’t show. Your design allows for this so double thanks for that.

      Thank you! Yes, I used the casing as a tube to run a continuous loop through initially but at the time I was working on this pattern there was a huge shortage of elastic, so I adapted my design to use as little elastic as possible.

    I just watched your outstanding tutorial. The best I’ve seen! (So nice not to have to watch someone sewing - you saved so much time! And having multiple masks made watching this a pleasure!). I’m trying your design next, but with a 1/8” elastic running through the casing by the ears that is adjustable for length (I just tie a knot.) We’ve found those the most comfortable and user friendly. Also nice because it’s easy to pull down around my neck and leave it there. New design for my family members. A huge thank you for a well designed mask and the best ever tutorial.

    I have been making masks and donating for a while using the surgical style pleats with some modifications (adding tucks under the chin, filter pockets, etc). But now I LOVE the fit of this mask! It really conforms much better to the wearer's face. I have adapted this pattern so the inside lining is a different color and has an overlapping slit for a removable filter (which I believe is more effective than the currently available washable interfacings). And I adapted the finishing binding pieces so I can run a single cord through them - making it more adjustable for different faces and avoiding the painful ear elastic problem. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern, Dora. It's much better than the other "3-D patterns" that are out there! Working on adapting for different sizes now.

    Absolutely fantastic! I used iron-on interfacing rather than quilt batting for my mask and it was a huge success. I'm a teacher and have to talk for hours at a stretch and my standard masks kept getting wet and getting in my mouth. I love how this sits away from my face but still forms a seal around my mouth and nose. I'm off to make more! Thank you for sharing your pattern with us!
