I have NEVER seen such a tutorial as this. Very clear instructions with each step explained. Anyone who knows how to sew doesn’t need to see the instructor sewing. I’m impressed!!!
Orange Dot Quilts You’re very welcome. You’ve actually spoiled me. Now when I watch a sewing tutorial I’m thinking “Hurry, hurry, hurry ...get to the next part”. Thank you again.
WOW...crystal clear instructions. Can't wait to get started. I have one to many trial and error masks. Instructions weren't clear so I'd improvise to get the facial coverage. Too many pieces to get one mask right. Yours makes absolute sense. Nobody needs to see the sewing machine when you talk thru the steps. THANK YOU!!! 💗💗💗
Hi, One day I was exposed to Covid but I was wearing an N95 and it saved me! I am a traveling nurse and I have traveled to three different hospitals since the epidemic started. I have tried different patterns with Halyard h600 fabric to replace some of the mask because of PPE shortages. Since I have gotten older and husband has pasted and children long gone and grown-up, I put my heart and soul into work. In my younger day, sewing and making my own patterns was a huge past time. But I have long retired my sewing machine that had many miles on it. As soon as the virus hit the United States, I knew what I had to do. So I pulled it out and dusted it off. I made patterns that worked very well but never as good as yours!!! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to reconstruct this wonderful mask that I can give away to all my fellow nurses far and wide. So well needed. Thank you thank you! You are Sewing Champion!
I made these some time ago and I need to make more now. This is the only mask my husband is happy to wear. Does not fog his glasses, no gaps around his face, comfortable. He loves the aluminum for his nose and he can both breathe and speak clearly. We both love that they have filters that are washable with the mask and are made from quality quilting fabric. They make us feel safe and for all of this we thank you. Bless you. ❤️
Thank you for doing a tutorial without having to show us you actually using the machine. Doing it like a cooking show with each step already pre-made is genius.
Thank you for the pattern it is excellent. I am 87 years old. And my hands are not very good so I allowed a little more seam allowance to make it easier for me . I have almost finished making 4 and am very pleased with the result and as I am not a seamstress I keep on checking the video as I am working . Jenny Wren
My mom taught me how to sew at a very young age, she was a pattern designer & seamstress - it's been a couple of decades since I actually sat in front of a sewing machine. I've watched more than 20 videos and I must say this is by far the BEST one! The Oscar goes to you!! Thank you!
This is the easiest to make and most comfortable mask I have found. You can wear the mask and talk without the mask sliding down exposing your nose. It minimizes fogging glasses and is so comfortable my husband said he could wear it all day with no problem. Thank you so much Dora Cary for this mask pattern and the extremely easy instructions to follow.
I love how you did the video. This is the first video I've watched where the designer has already premade each step to show us what it should look like. Great job
The BEST mask, pattern and fit and COMFORT. It never touches your mouth, doesn’t slip down when talking, doesn’t fog up with glasses. Congratulations and THANK YOU from a fellow Industrial Designer ❤️❤️❤️
i'm so tired of trying new mask patterns - this is the easiest to sew and best fitting - this is a winner and a keeper - thank you so much for sharing - be safe - be well
I made this mask today. It is by far the most comfortable mask I have made to date. I love that it doesn’t press against my face as I inhale and my glasses don’t fog up when I exhale. Thank you for making the tutorial and the pattern.
I made one! Such great explanation! This video is one of the best I have seen so far. I made the mask and it came out sooo good. I love how spacious it is between the mouth and the fabric. I can breathe a lot better than the other traditional masks. The traditional ones are almost always touching the mouth and provide no space between the mouth and the fabric. I hand sewed mine since I don't have a sewing machine and I am super happy with the results. I appreciate you taking your time and knowledge and showing us all how to make one of these. Bravo!
Great tutorial. One of the best. Thank you. The only 2 things I will do differently is: Replace the batting with an extra layer of cotton instead, for anyone with asthma. 2. Measure the binding pieces 2.5 x 4 or 5” to create channels so the cord or elastic can be changed as it gets worn, or if the wearer prefers elastic, ribbon or paracord with cord stopper to tie at the back. This allows this great pattern design to become more versatile for people that work in different situations. Thanks again.
@Majorly Musical Minors What a terrific article. Thanks very much for sharing it. Now if only my stash included fabric for an evening gown. Guess we'll just have to do with batting ;-) Thanks again!
Can you help me understand using the binding to make a channel? Someone else also mentioned that but I don't get it. What do you different and why does it need to be longer strips? TIA
What a beautifully well thought out design… I just finished making my first mask. I wear glasses 🤓 and this design has no gaps, no fog, I am thoroughly impressed! Thank you so much for putting your engineering brain 💕🧠💕 into something so essential. Sending virtual health and happiness your way! 😊☀️💕🙏🏻
This is a great pattern. I've made five already and these will replace all my old masks. No more glasses fogging up - I can't believe it! This may be due to the aluminum strips I finally purchased but the pattern is part of it, too. It is so much more comfortable to not have fabric right on my nose and mouth.
actually I think the no fogging is because of the wadding absorbing the moisture well at least I hope it is as Im about to tackle my first mask tomorrow and I wear glasses, I couldnt get the same quilters wadding here in Australia so I hope the pure unbleached cotton one I do have will do the trick.
Thank you "sew" much. I struggled with the first mask. That's just me. Every single different style of mask I made starts with that one trial and error... This tutorial is by far the best. Instructions are crystal clear. I've made so many masks I don't need the pattern. I also noticed how many other same style (3-D) videos have popped up after yours. Thank you for not playing annoying music or finger pointing those imaginary sewing lines into creation. Sew appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate and instruct. Really great video and the only one I have used to mass produce masks.
I am an essential worker and I wear mask almost every day and I get a lot of compliments for your pattern and it work's well. I had other mask my friends made for me but they're not as good as your pattern. Yours the best! Thank you so much Clarita 😊🙏
I've made a few different styles of masks, and this by far is the best! My husband and I agree that it is the most comfortable, and more protective all the way around.
I'd like to say thanks so much for this pattern! I made these masks for my husband and myself, and we used them while we were in Seattle last week. (I had surgery at Virginia Mason Hospital there. I was required to wear a mask outside my hospital room, and my husband was required to wear one no matter where he was in the hospital, although the staff was pretty relaxed about whether he wore one 100% of the time when it was just the two of us.) I received compliments on our masks from everyone. I was very happy with the care at VM, and to thank them I will be making more masks (as soon as I can move around a bit better; I currently have an 8-inch scar from just above my belly button just below my breast bone, and am pretty sore!). I appreciate how easy this pattern is -- once I made the first one, successive masks went really quickly. I enjoy seeing them come together so quickly! Again, thanks so much!!
I purchased this mask for my teacher-daughter, because of the extra protection of the batting. It is wonderful. The tutorial is amazingly clear. Thank you, Dora. What a service you have provided to us all during a time when your kindness means so much!
It has taken DAYS to find a legitimate and useful mask pattern and instructions. No seam down the center...YAY! Thank you so much for your creative and on-point video instruction!
I've made several different masks in lockdown. This one is definitely the best, People love the coverage, the comfort and the style. I have recently discovered that the masks i made for people to help themselves to for a donation to a local hospice, have found their way around the local community and to whole families!! well done Dora Cary!! this is a great design. I'm going back into production again!
Of all the face mask tutorials I have seen, this is the best one. Instructions were explained clearly and not rushed. I will be making several of these masks. Thank you for sharing.
I am extremely impressed by how thorough you are in explaining all the steps in making this great mask. When I saw all the details at first, I thought it would be so hard and too many steps......I was wrong. You did a marvelous job!! Thank you so very much.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Breathing had been so difficult in the masks I had. This one does not send me into panic mode, and my husband will now wear his mask without complaining. Thank you for your innovation and generosity.
It is already September and I am still making this same mask! I am always open to finding another, better pattern, but so far I have found no better. Thank you, Dora!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! The way you presented the various steps by telling us what to do next and then holding up the mask with that step already done was so very professional! No wasted time, no confusion--it was absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to try this because not only do my glasses fog up with the mask I currently have, I also feel like I can't get enough oxygen when I breathe. At my doctor's office yesterday, my oxygen saturation level read 97--without a mask it's 99 or 100, proof positive that I really wasn't getting enough oxygen. Again, thank you!
This was a very good instructional video. I love how you always had a version of that step finished and just say ‘it will look like this’ and hold it up.
I love this pattern and have been going crazy making these. Everyone loves them! I've found that I can easily get two masks out of a fat quarter, as long as the fabric doesn't have a pattern in the wrong direction. Also, I hate pins and I don't pin at all with this. For the nose, I purchase self-adhesive bridges from Amazon! No pinning! I just chalk the lines around to know where to sew. For the ear loops, I use scotch tape to hold them! No pins! I just love the pattern and how beautiful they turn out. I probably have had the most trouble with the binding, and I think that's just me. Thank you so much!
Hi: I see your comment about self-adhesive strips for the nose: do you remove the paper strip from the metal band and apply it adhesive-side down to the INSIDE of the mask (between the layers of fabric?)
Indeed the binding---and folding in those layers---is the most difficult part. But it finishes the edges so well. I have begun topstitching from the FRONT of the mask and capturing edges that have been pinned down on the back layer. Inside, you might also consider using the finished selvedge edge of your fabric (if it looks good), to skip having to fold that fussy hem on the inside.
This is the best mask I've worn and the you tube video instructions were so clear and easy to follow. I have now made 10 because everyone that sees me wearing one wants one too. Thanks so much.
I'm a beginning sewer teaching myself as I sew masks. This is the third and most complex mask I've made. That said, even a newbie like me was able to successfully complete this. This is the most comfortable, and well fitting mask. Thank you so very much for the tutorial and pattern! xoxox
I have made about 30 of these masks for all my friends, family, and neighbors and everyone loves them. It is so much easier to talk in this mask than most others. No one seems to like the fabric right up against their mouth and this pattern seems to give you just that little extra room to speak and breathe. I did find the batting to be quite heavy and hot, so I substituted batting with a featherweight stabilizer. I wasn't sure how that was going to work out, but it did just fine and still allows the mask to hold its shape, which is great! Many thanks for teaching this tutorial and allowing me to download the pattern for it. So many people are benefiting from your kindness and generosity and I just wanted you to know.
This is a great mask, easy to make and padding makes is thick. It is very comfortable to wear. Free pattern and instructions are great. Highly recommend this mask.
Danette Reitz , I love this mask too, and have made hundreds of them. However, I did not like the batting she called for, makes it way too hot, IMHO. I use a muslin lining.
I have made several styles of masks and have yet to find one that my husband likes. He wore this one today and has already text me saying how much more comfortable this style is. Your video was easy to follow as well. Thank you for providing this pattern!
Your tutorial is the best. I have made some masks and tested then myself. Yes a confortable mask makes the difference. Thank you so much for your sewing know-how. You are a great teacher. Gratitude!
this is my second post - not a sewist, my first attempt was....a first attempt. ***Now I've made four of them, and my family loves them; they give enough room to breathe and speak, they hols their shape really well, and they are really really good-looking. thank you !
I've now made around 50 of these, and lots more coming! I've made a couple hundred of the 'surgical style' with pleats, but when I saw this video I had to try it! It absolutely fits better. I have a smaller face and make this pattern at 90-95% for me and smaller faces. On the smaller ones, I move the stitching line to 2" down from the top instead of 2.5". The original had the stitching line almost at my mouth and I wanted it closer to my nose tip. I am making them with a filter pocket: I use the front just as Dora has it, but instead of cutting that main piece on a fold, I cut one, plus ¼" seam allowance on top and bottom, and then I cut a 14" x 10" piece of a different fabric for the lining and fold it in half, and cut a 3" piece and fold that in half. The narrow strip (1.5" now folded) is sewn to the bottom of the front piece (3 layers of raw edges with right sides together), and the larger piece (now 7") is sewn to the top. They overlap at the bottom of the mask. This gives me 3 layers of cotton with a pocket for a removable HEPA filter so I don't use the batting. With the stitching line across the front, the mask still holds it shape just fine. (but don't stitch that stitching line through the lining or you won't be able to get a filter into the pocket). You can also make the lining a single layer for the hot weather, but will lose some protection. Also, if your sewing machine can't handle all the layers, a single layer lining might work for you. For me, I find the original pattern pushes down a bit too hard on my nose. With a metal nose bridge it just doesn't need to be that tight. So I adjusted the angle cut out of the top corners leaving the top edge of the mask a ½" longer and this fixed it for me. The final adjustment I have made was to make the binding strips channels so I can run a cord through them instead of the elastic ear loops (ouch). Dora, I can't thank you enough! This is an amazing pattern.
habibanola hi there, I just read your comment... it is exactly what I’m looking for Regarding the filter pocket. I am very new to sewing is there anyway that you could contact me and help walk me through adding the filter pocket? I can be reached through my email amhehner@gmail.com, from there we can exchange numbers if you’re willing to help thank you in advance
Hi: am very interested in how you worked this out. Also, are you still including the cotton batting inside the front and back layers WITH the pocket for the filter? Do you have a simple diagram of the adjustments you have made of the basic mask? Thanks. paula@pjbogert.com
I have made dozens of these masks for my family and friends. This is the best pattern I have tried over the pandemic. Only change I make is I stitch two pieces of fabric together so that the front and back of the masks are different fabrics and I use a non woven n95 mask like material instead of the batting. My mom hated masks until I made her a set of these to match her wardrobe, thank you so much for this pattern and tutorial!!
thank you so much Dora for the pattern and clear and concise instructions! I've made several different types of masks from RUclips videos and like how this one is a really good fit, and once familiar with it, it can be done quite quickly in batches. very much appreciate your time and trouble. I'm using Pellon Shir Tailor non-woven fusible interface lining instead of the batting one or two layers depending on how much body you prefer, plus plastic coered metal coffee ties that come with self adhesive on , and i just iron an extra piece of interface over them to give some padding over the nose bridge. I also use a craft bead on the elastic and make it a bit longer at 10" to allow for friends and family to adjust elastic to fit. after our General Practice confirmed today that anyone going for a Doctors' appointment or to collect a prescription of have blood tests etc must wear a mask, it will be very handy to have such a good fitting mask. Thank You!
This looks like the BEST fitting mask I've seen since March. Can't wait to try it. I have made 4-5 different styles for family and they didn't always fit someone the way they wanted. I even had to mute the video but could clearly understand every step. I gave you you a thumbs up and will watch it with sound later. Thank you for the free pattern.
As a health care worker, I love everything about the design except the batting. I wear the thin medical procedural masks for 13 hours, and struggle to breath through them. I can't imaging trying to breathe through the batting. I would like to try this pattern, but will use a very light interfacing instead! I do love this design, and after watching the very well made video, I'm happy to say that the pattern isn't as difficult as the finished product appears. Thank you so much for the free pattern! Blessings to you for your generosity in sharing your lovely pattern!
Some filter alternatives: Merv 16 AC Filter (non-fiberglass), flattened and cut out--can make a seemingly endless number of filters. Or, a couple of layers of your average non-woven polypropylene shopping bag (has a dot matrix pattern), it's the same material they make N95 masks out of (depending on the thickness, just add more layers if too thin). Cheap and readily available.
Tea Burn, can you offer a photo or list of non woven average polypropylene bags. Thank you. Also, any supportive documentation about the bag's construction product that you researched and found your information you shared would be great too...
These are EXCELLENT masks! I've received spontaneous comments from multiple medical professionals - one was a complete stranger - about the fit and coverage of this mask. I made several during spring & summer 2020, and now it's spring 2021 and I'm creating more. I have made the following modifications: 1) I use non-woven interfacing instead of batting, partially because I had no batting on hand; 2) I changed the straps on some to go around the head (instead of behind the ears) - this is more secure & comfortable for longer term use (work, shopping, school), and doesn't interfere with my glasses. I also like having some around-the-ears masks on hand for quick use, like answering the door. For those who want to double mask, this mask makes an excellent cover mask for disposable masks of all kinds.
I just finished this mask. It's the first mask that fits my face, and my glasses don't fog up when I am wearing it. Thank you so much for sharing this for free! My sister and I will be making these for friends and family. Bless you!
@@beccak2419 It is definitely a game changer! I have tried various designs of the 3 pleated surgical mask style and the olson mask, but my glasses still fog up. Plus they are hard to talk in because the design. I have a very round, wide face, (big cheeks) and this mask fits me the best. My sister's face is much thinner and she is comfortable in the surgical mask, but she likes this design better as well.
Thank you for this pattern and video which makes this very easy to construct. You and your team are just brilliant. I love the details on how your instructions gives fabric amount and number of mask, no waste fabric!. Also how to adjust the print settings for a smaller size. Sewing in the nose wire, no fiddling. I have tried other mask patterns, this is NOW my favorite design and construction I did it in 15 minutes!
Hi. Thank you so much for your kindness in sharing your pattern with us. I really appreciate it. I tried making this tonight and it came out gorgeous. I really love the style and fit. Please be well and stay healthy.
I have watched MANY ‘make a mask’ videos and your video is, by far, the clearest, & easiest to follow. Thank you for making the various stages of the mask and SHOWING how it is supposed to look. I have made one mask with which I am not entirely happy. Yours is the next one I am making. I may make it with straps that go around neck and top of head because I am finding that ear loops hurt after awhile. Again THANK YOU! I’m on my (virtual) way to your shop!
This is a wonderful, thorough tutorial. I love how you don't go to the machine but show us how it should look after sewn. Thank you, too, for providing a mask pattern. You are kind to do so. I've sewn so many different kinds of mask and haven't found the perfect one. I'm going to give this one a try.
I can't thank you enough for this speaking tutorial! I am a beginner sewer and visually impaired and thought you did a marvelous job and I am more than positive with you beside me and my sewing machine I will be able to get through my first mask! I love the finishing you did with your elastics. I do need a smaller size than normal and am wondering if you have any pattern sizing tips to pass along. My sister made me a couple of smaller masks and my elastic size was 4.25 - 4.5 inches if I remember correctly. These truly are the best and most comfortable masks to wear. And I was told that they do better than the blue pleated masks for protecting yourself and others! You are a wonderful instructor, many thanks again.
This was so easy for me to follow. It looks so complex when finished, but amazingly easy with your style of instruction. And I finished this faster than the pleat style masks I've been making (even though I've been practicing those over the course of 20+ masks). I'm switching all my masks over to this pattern.
Hands down the BEST mask design and pattern out there. The fit is brilliant. Covers face comfortably. I'm making some for my brave daughter who is a nurse on the frontline, testing for covid. (They aren't for work, just for when she goes out shopping, etc). And THANK YOU for the free pattern. Your generosity won't be forgotton. :)
Thank you for the pattern, I’ve just made my first one and it fits great, I used cotton flannel instead of batting, I will be making a lot more for my family. Thank you again. Stay safe.
Thank you very much for your design. I can't stop making them! This design is fun to assemble and quick to sew up. So much easier than any other pattern that I've used. Thank you again for bringing this to all to enjoy.
I got the 10 mask kit from her and made them for my whole family. I made 2 changes: I use coffee bag ties that I ordered from Amazon for the nose piece so that it is longer. I also use fabric glue to glue the binding on with the elastic rather than stitching the edges just for ease. I can wear these masks all day with a good seal, wear my glasses, wear lipstick without it getting on the mask, and can breathe really well.
Did you use batting? And still able to breathe? I live in hot desert and it has been difficult to breathe with masks on doing any activity, walking shopping etc etc
This is such a well done video. I don't know how to sew and just purchased a sewing machine just to make masks for friends and family. I've watched at least a dozen videos maybe two dozen; this is very straight forward and easy to follow. Thank you!
Super design . thankyou . Need to wear for longer periods: Adjusting to avoid elastic pull on ears. Dual tie back . PS slicing aluminium food tray for nose fit. Thankyou again super video and mercifully no sound track to distract clear commentary.
I have tried so many different patterns for masks and this is by far the best one. My glasses don't fog up anymore and with the inner lining, I feel that it is more protective. I am not a very good seamstress but you are a great teacher. Thank you!
Thank you. The instructions are so through. I'm a sewing novice and making masks and scrub caps has only been done due to excellent instructions. Thanks again!
@@joanellzimmerman2261 I am not orange dot, but you can get this on Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/ie/listing/812392649/four-simple-mask-kits-without-fabric-but?ref=shop_home_active_5&crt=1
Thank you for selling these on Etsy....every Friday! I purchased four for my family. Thank you for thinking of us....the sewing impaired! :) On a serious note, you did a wonderful thing. Stay safe and healthy.
This was a great tutorial. I made one with bias tape ties instead of elastic. For the nose piece I used the bendy thing off a bag of coffee beans. That worked really well. The extra length of that bendy piece gives a lot of structure to the top half of the mask and keeps it against my face so my glasses don't fog up. I've made one mask and am currently working on a second.
Thank you so much for this pattern. My sister who is a nurse says hers is so comfortable. I have made several for family and friends here in Australia.
Thank you for the mask video and template! I’ve been making masks for a few months and this is the go to for my work team. It’s breathable and easy to make. My cashiers have to wear them all day and they are the most comfortable for them, for breathing and speaking. I modified it slightly with channels on the ends for the elastic so they can change it out when they need to.
LaNecia Nixon Do you have more information on how you made that channel for the elastic? I’ve been wanting to modify this template to include a channel instead of the binding so that the elastic fit can be tailored or adjusted. If you don’t get the length of the elastic right, the fit and comfort of this mask can vary greatly.
Marc Thompson hi, sorry as i’m just now seeing this question! For the elastic casing i use 2 pieces of fabric cut 2” x 5”, I attach it on sides, one on each end, right sides facing, it will wrap over the ends of the mask. Sewing it into place, I then fold the fabric over to cover the raw edges, making about a 1/4” wide channel. I sew that down then feed the elastic through. Probably not a great description but there a ton of pleated face masks that incorporate the channel I refer to. It’s one more step to this mask but so worth it, imho
Thank you so much for taking the time to give a great step by step tutorial with free downloadable template! I was able to go out and get some supplies today, and I look forward to making your mask for family, friends, and the community. Stay healthy and safe!
I absolutely love the look of this mask. I am doing mask tomorrow for my family. It looks easy enough for someone that hasn't sewn in years! Thank you so my sweet lady!
Thank you for an even better tutorial I made four masks for my family and when my son had a hip replacement he wore one to the hospital and the anaesthetist told him it was the best home made mask he had seen, so I am going to try make another 20 before my 88 birthday in 3 weeks and many thanks for the encouragement I have received. One thing I know now you are never too old to learn Jenny Wren
I have made a lot of masks but this is my favorite. I've made over 60 so far and give them away. Everyone loves the roominess and comfort of them. I add an extra layer of cotton fabric instead of the batting. I also add a small button hole on the inside to insert the 3.5" aluminum metal strip (which I buy on Amazon) for the nose bridge so the metal strip can be removed before machine washing or if it needs replacing.
Excellent VIDEO...Throughly done and effective teaching tool. My Husband has Breathing problems and the Cotton Sheeting I used to make his masks are difficult to breath thru. The Article shared by a post below from U Chicago was very helpful. I have to sample fabrics again....and then try your mask. One thing I will share with everyone...my Son whom is very critical decided I had to use 2 long pieces of elastic to go around his head and the neck for the best fit for him at work. Often he has goggles on, Hat and with a mask makes a lot to wear for 8-12 hours. He also has trouble breathing thru the Cotton Sheeting that I used. My first masks also had the Nose wire and filter pocket.
Thank you! In my mask design the casing/binding creates two channels on each side of the mask. You can thread a long piece of elastic or fabric tie through the channels to go behind the head and be tied at the base of the head.
Had trouble getting it at first. Tried a few times...got it! Thank you so much. I want to make a few of these for my grandchildren as my 12 year old grandson was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. God bless you!
Great design!!!! I altered the binding a bit to make casings to thread elastic in one piece to allow for head size/individual comfort. Also, used non woven interfacing material for 'summer' masks. Lots of people have complimented the style. Thank-you so much for sharing your design and the easy to follow video!!!!
Thank you so much for this pattern. Your instructions are very easy to follow and the pattern goes together so quickly. This mask fits so much better than the flat folded style. I have made this new style for all of my family and neighbors!
Thank you for this pattern. I watched your video yesterday and have already made eleven mask and have nine more started. I do not sell the mask I give them to my family and friends. They also thank you because these cover better then the ones I was making
Just made your mask and it is the best! I’ve made several different types of masks, some are more comfortable than others but yours is the best. I live in Florida and it is hot everywhere you go. It is nice that this mask has room inside so you can talk without your mouth fighting the fabric. Now that they are slowly opening some of the outdoor venues here, we quickly realized that a comfortable, breathable mask is a must. I did eliminate the batting and replaced it with light weight interfacing...because it’s too hot for wearing outside when it’s 90 degrees. Plus we are not wearing them in a hospital setting. Thanks for the free pattern. I’m going to make them for all my family and friends...perfect for wearing to a Disney Park.
barbrobert no batting....used lightweight fusible interfacing. I also made some masks with only the two layers of fabric. Still when it’s in the upper 80s outside....every mask turns into a sauna.
Lucky Linda how did the masks work out with just the two layers and no patting or interfacing? Did they sit ok? It’s going to be summer soon here in Australia.
Aussie Mummy....I used lightweight fusible interfacing. I did end up cutting the lining fabric away after the fact on the lower portion only, mask still kept its shape, I also cut away the part the goes under the chin....so the mask just sits nicely on your face....it makes is easier to talk as your jaw is not restricted. It also allows for more airflow....I know that defeats the purpose of the mask. At this point I call It my decoy mask as masks are required everywhere in public here in Florida. I am complying....but staying comfortable. This is still a very easy mask to make.
Excellent pattern! Excellent concise instruction in this video and very easy to make and SUPER comfortable! I covered the elastic with fabric to enhance the look and comfort! Using care with your cuts on a fat quarter I had exactly enough material left to make the elastic covers! Thank you for sharing your talent!
Thank you very much for this great pattern. I have so many different patterns for masks, but yours is the best. Your generosity is also appreciated. God bless you and everyone you Love.
For me there are three -fit, coverage, and breathability. We live in a hot, humid climate and I need to be able to breathe AND not have a dripping, sweating face underneath the mask after wearing all day at school. I’m hoping this one fits the bill.
Very smart pattern that you created. I am eager to try this version. I have watched over 50 videos, and this is one of the best. Thank you for sharing.
The best mask and tutorial I’ve come across! I’ve made 5 different style of mask since March. This is definitely the easiest to make and the best fit! Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely fantastic! I used iron-on interfacing rather than quilt batting for my mask and it was a huge success. I'm a teacher and have to talk for hours at a stretch and my standard masks kept getting wet and getting in my mouth. I love how this sits away from my face but still forms a seal around my mouth and nose. I'm off to make more! Thank you for sharing your pattern with us!
I just made six of these masks last night. The only modification I made was to add ties rather tan elastic ear loops. Thank you for the great design. Not only does it wrap around the face for added safety, it does not sit so close to the mouth as to muffle voices like some of the other patterns do. Thank you again for your efforts and design.
Great pattern! It has good face coverage and "seals" well. I can talk while wearing it without it moving around, something I was looking for because I have to teach this fall. I made one small change, however, to make the ear loops adjustable. I attached the top of each ear loop as indicated in the pattern, but left the bottom loose. I then sewed a small piece of elastic with a vertical slit at the bottom corners of the mask to create a "buckle." I cut each ear loop to 10 inches, and then threaded them through the elastic buckle. This allows the wearer to adjust the ear loops for a more individual fit.
I'm a visual learner, is there any way you could take a short video or a picture and post it up somewhere? I have to have adjustable at the ears due to a collagen disorder so I would love to see your version!
I made this mask today using Filty filter fabric as the inner filling. It came out really good, super comfortable, and looks great too! Thank you for the clear video which is very useful because it gives some time-saving pointers.
I liked how she detailed the process without showing every trip to the sewing machine. Having each sewing step completed on other masks ready to show the completed step made this a smooth and quicker vid. At the same time, every single step was described and demonstrated because not everyone is a seamstress!! She made an amazing and thorough instructional video. Thank you. I sent to my friend who is a seamstress. LOL
I just want to say how much I like this mask. I have tried different ones but I have to say this is the best - the most comfortable by far with lots of breathing room. I will say that I had to adjust the tabs where the elastic is attached. Not everyone like elastic around the ears. But other than that this is a great mask - especially with the 3 layers. Thank you so much!
What a blessing! This is by far the most comfortable, quickest to make, and doesn't fog my glasses and feel like I can't breath! A+++ Will be making more now for this is the best! Excited to make more!!!
Very nice video. I’m excited to make your mask. I loved how you explained what to do and where to seam and then directly showed it done. No tedious watching the demonstration of the actual sewing. Thank you. Brilliantly done!
Thank you for sharing! I currently use a pattern similar to this style mask, I will try yours because I like the way you explain sewing the sides to give it the shape.
I love this design, I have several elderly folks that need good masks and will be making some for them when they visit the doctors. I am thankful I saw your video and website. Thank you so much.
I have NEVER seen such a tutorial as this. Very clear instructions with each step explained. Anyone who knows how to sew doesn’t need to see the instructor sewing. I’m impressed!!!
Thank you so much!
Orange Dot Quilts You’re very welcome. You’ve actually spoiled me. Now when I watch a sewing tutorial I’m thinking “Hurry, hurry, hurry ...get to the next part”.
Thank you again.
Do you sell them
WOW...crystal clear instructions.
@Renu Ojha, Yes but I am ten days backlogged right now. If you wish to place an order, please send me an email at orangedotquilts@gmail.com
You are welcome! And thank you!!
Thank you for your work and dedication. You are a true angel!
A nurse should know the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic.
@@maunster3414 you are rude.
@@karenkellyburns4507,ok, you're one of these 'truth is rude' people, ok, I get it.
Jenny Wren
Good for you Jenny !! Keep up the good work and bless you.
God bless you :) stay safe and stay well
Such an inspiration! I'm 63 and think you are fabulous!

My mom taught me how to sew at a very young age, she was a pattern designer & seamstress - it's been a couple of decades since I actually sat in front of a sewing machine. I've watched more than 20 videos and I must say this is by far the BEST one! The Oscar goes to you!! Thank you!
Thank you!! I mean, I want to thank the academy ... ;)

You are welcome. Thank YOU for the wonderful review!
I love how you did the video. This is the first video I've watched where the designer has already premade each step to show us what it should look like. Great job
Thank you!
Such a useful thing to have done and a great way of explaining it all!! Clearest tutorial ever!
You're welcome!
Thank you for commenting about your glasses. This is the trouble I'm trying to overcome!
@@kellyboadway6073 glasses over the mask usually (disclaimer here) works
@Majorly Musical Minors so the batting should be a mix of poly and cotton?
@@riteee287 from the uchicago.edu article YES. The Article was very helpful.
@Majorly Musical Minors What a terrific article. Thanks very much for sharing it. Now if only my stash included fabric for an evening gown. Guess we'll just have to do with batting ;-) Thanks again!
I love this mask and the way you teach! Is there a way to add a filter pocket?
I am so happy to hear! Thank you!
@@OrangeDotQuilts No, THANK YOU...
You are very welcome!
Thank you! I am so glad you like it!

This is the best mask I have found! Room enough to talk, easy construction, wonderful video walking you through it! THANK YOU!
I agree! I keep trying new patterns but always return to Orange Dot. Thank you!
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I am not a super experienced sewer, and I struggle with 3-d spaces. This was the perfect tutorial for my favorite mask.
I use quilting clips, paper clips will also suffice but don't push the whole length onto the fabric as the rough end catches on the fabric.
This is the best mask I've worn and the you tube video instructions were so clear and easy to follow. I have now made 10 because everyone that sees me wearing one wants one too. Thanks so much.
You are welcome. Thank YOU!
I'm a beginning sewer teaching myself as I sew masks. This is the third and most complex mask I've made. That said, even a newbie like me was able to successfully complete this. This is the most comfortable, and well fitting mask. Thank you so very much for the tutorial and pattern! xoxox
You are welcome! Thank you!!
Gratitude!
Thank you!
this is my second post - not a sewist, my first attempt was....a first attempt.
I can be reached through my email

This mask at 100% was too big on me. It fit my husband.
How do you make the binding into channels please? I can't picture it. Thanks
Hi. Great comment. Would you please send me a copy of your comment so I could follow your suggestions? Keikilewis@gmail.com
You are welcome! And thank you for the great suggestion for the filter.

If you can find some, Filti isn't as thick and I found it easy to breathe. I'm claustrophobic and can manage to keep it on.
Bless you!
Thank you for pointing out the mask does not fog up your glasses when wearing. An added plus.

I’m a novice at sewing, your mask design and instructions are the best that I have come across. Thank you for your video!
You are so welcome! I am so glad you like the tutorial.
I just finished making two masks by following this video. I like this mask better than the others that I have sewn. Thank you so much for sharing.
Stay safe.
Wonderful!
Thanks for the idea of cotton flannel. And I have a lot left over because I just made my grandson to be blankets and all sorts of stuff. Great idea!
That is awesome! Thank you for the great feedback!
Such a smart idea to use aluminum trays! I love it. Thanks for sharing.
I can't thank you enough for not only sharing the pattern, but for this video. My sewing skills are moderate so all your tips are so helpful.

I also use the coffee bean bag closure; we grind our own coffee, so don't have to buy anymore items! It works great.
I just finished this mask and it's my FAVORITE! It's so comfortable, I just love it! Thank you. ! I just ordered 2 more kits. Can't wait!
Thank you so much for taking the time to give a great step by step tutorial with free downloadable template! I was able to go out and get some supplies today, and I look forward to making your mask for family, friends, and the community. Stay healthy and safe!
Fabulous design. I have made about a dozen of these for family and friends. Now my husband and kid’s coworkers are requesting them.
I absolutely love the look of this mask. I am doing mask tomorrow for my family. It looks easy enough for someone that hasn't sewn in years! Thank you so my sweet lady!
Thank you!
One thing I know now you are never too old to learn Jenny Wren
i can not wait to make your mask very great instruction .I am 80 and have made and gave away about 300 . thank you so much for your time and sharing
Thank you! This is perfect!! We have nurses in the family whom will truly appreciate this.
Thank you so much for this pattern. Your instructions are very easy to follow and the pattern goes together so quickly. This mask fits so much better than the flat folded style. I have made this new style for all of my family and neighbors!
Did you make any for a child? Was the 75% a good fitting?
Thank you for this pattern. I watched your video yesterday and have already made eleven mask and have nine more started. I do not sell the mask I give them to my family and friends. They also thank you because these cover better then the ones I was making
Wonderful!
Thank-you very much for a great mask design and such clear video instructions. You're very generous to share your pattern free of charge.
Thank you for the great feedback! I appreciate it!
Living in Florida, did you add the batting? I was wondering if it would be too warm.
barbrobert no batting....used lightweight fusible interfacing.
God bless you and everyone you
Love.
Finally, a DIY mask I actually want to make that addresses my biggest issues with DIY masks - Fit & Coverage!!! I’ll try this out next week :)
Wow, thank you!
Fantastic!!! After trying 5 other patterns I look no further. Love it!! Thanks so much
Thank you!!
I’ve tried 7 mask patterns and this is the best! Thank you Orange Dot Quilts!
Thank you! Great solution!
I'm a visual learner, is there any way you could take a short video or a picture and post it up somewhere? I have to have adjustable at the ears due to a collagen disorder so I would love to see your version!
@@summere1609 I just posted a photo with a closeup on my Twitter feed - twitter.com/DrTracyfrank/status/1266835031768608769?s=20
T Frank thanks for the picture on Twitter. I had seen others use that elastic with a button sewn on to the mask edge to make it adjustable
I made this mask today using Filty filter fabric as the inner filling. It came out really good, super comfortable, and looks great too! Thank you for the clear video which is very useful because it gives some time-saving pointers.
Nice tutorial. I liked it that you didn’t feel you had to sew every seam to show me how the mask is put together. Very efficient. :)
Thanks so much 😊
Excellent tutorial. Thank you
The link to the pattern is available right under the video, in the description.
Yes, Deborah! I do have an Etsy shop that you can visit by clicking on this link: www.etsy.com/shop/OrangeDotQuilts. Thank you!
Does the batting feel comfortable? To me it seems it might be too hot for Summer...
ANA I've been reading posts and I see that some women stated the mask is a bit big. Did you feel it was to big or did you modify the size?
Very nice video. I’m excited to make your mask. I loved how you explained what to do and where to seam and then directly showed it done. No tedious watching the demonstration of the actual sewing. Thank you. Brilliantly done!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing! I currently use a pattern similar to this style mask, I will try yours because I like the way you explain sewing the sides to give it the shape.
You are so welcome!
This is by far my favorite mask. It is breathable and gives me a sense of security. I use Filti for my filter.
Thank you for sharing.
I love this design, I have several elderly folks that need good masks and will be making some for them when they visit the doctors. I am thankful I saw your video and website. Thank you so much.
Excellent fit and super easy to make. By far the most comfortable mask I've worn. Thanks Dora!
