Cotton only masks are most useful for wearing over the N95 masks to keep them clean and prolong their use. They can be changed and laundered more often.

    Hello,
for everyone who has no printer, I measure the sewing pattern:
The bottom line is 24cm (approx 9,5 inch), the top line is 7 cm (approx. 3 inch)
From the middle of the bottom line, to the middle of the top line - it's 10cm high (approx. 4 inch)
Right and left from the bottom line it's 2 cm high before it begins to round.
Length of the elastic 26-30cm (10-12 inch)
I hope it's understandable, because my English is not so good.

Thanks a very nice project that helps a lot of people. I did something similar and i have found that instead sewing you can use the heat sealer of a vacuum packaging machine (many of us have one to preserve foods) to ho seal the edges. it works fine and give a very robust seal. In this way you avoid to make holes in the fabric.
I hope my suggestion would be useful.

It's so true! People DON'T do research or check facts. That's why there are so many beliefs about what truly happens at death. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says the dead know nothing at all (they do not live on or are not suffering), but that they will receive a resurrection at a later time (Acts 24:15) If people would research instead of blindly believe what they are taught, then people could have real hope and true comfort. :)

Thank you for this great resource Doc. I ordered HEPA bags from Home Depot. Unfortunately I chose ones that only yielded me 3 per bag.
I used doubled up twist ties for the bridge.
TIP - Since I only had a limited amount of elastic strap I McGivered a set of strong alligator clips on the ends of the elastics and quilt-stitched the ends of the mask so the clips could make good purchase and not tear it. It works great, and I can simply move the strap from mask to mask.

Cut up pantyhose straps are a good elastic, make sure the stripes are wide (at least 1 inch or 2,5 cm or more, you can test), they get much longer and narrower once you stretch them. They do not fray, especially not once they were stretched, and they are also not disintegrating.
or hair elastics (you can use an inelastic strap to cover the distance, and the elastic just adds the option for adjustment in the last inches.

HEPA material is not safe, producers like Hoover have warned (see the comment section). BUT:
search on smartairfilters(dot)com with What are the best materials for making diy masks. (the humble tea towel ! or cut up cotton shirts).
      smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/
I am sure professional, bought masks are better, but you can come pretty close, despite the "holes" in the woven fabric.
In practice a close FIT is very important.
I am astonished that tea towels (the fabrik is loosely woven) should be that good, but they did the test. The material is also meant to be absorbant, and that does not suit the virus or bacteria with which they tested.
      Also the article about:
      N95 masks versus surgical masks
(the finding during the flu season. Officially N95 is less protective. But it is much more comfortable to wear, and brings almost the same results, that was a clinical study).
They also have an article: What’s a Reliable Way to Disinfect Masks from Viruses Without Harming Effectiveness?
      - the materials of bought are impregnated (water repellant, that is intended to help also against viri and bacteria getting through) and you lose that by washing. The hull of the virus is weak it breaks if exoses to soap or detergent, thus the 20 second hand washing. It is not only that you rinse it off, the soap literally destroys the virus.
DIY cotton masks can and should be washed. probably hanging them up to dry - even better in sunlight - and washing every other days should work.
The virus does not fare well on absorbant surfaces (like cardboard) when they are dry.

You shouldn't be wearing elastic straps, or have a mask that does not cover your entire head, and block off air supply. I know this is well known now, 5 months after your comment, but we in Sweden knew from the start that a) the virus was a mild flu virus and b) no mask a human could breathe through would protect against a flu virus. While it is better than nothing, it’s not a comprehensive filter. The particulate will just take the path of least resistance. This is why they always say a HEPA filter needs to have an airtight seal to be truly filtering out particulate with 99.7% efficacy. Applying the same concept, the sides of the mask would also have to be airtight in the worst-case scenario of a sneeze where the force would lift the mask off your face.

I have some Pellon interfacing and it immediately absorbed the water when I held it under the faucet. So not sure which kind is the right kind but mine isn’t. Also want to add that splitting the elastic down the middle to make it a quarter inch instead of the half inch size I had, just kept unraveling so I had to replace all the masks elastics that I had already done with something else. I did find some extra large hair elastics and if you cut it to open it up it works real well and I just used a silicone small hair elastic to secure them which can be rolled up or down to make the loop tighter or looser. I hope that helps to spare someone the frustration I just experienced!

Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end the iron straightened me out as she said everything will be fine, no situation is too pressing. A fabulous idea and i successfully made 2, thank you. Unfortunately I had to take it off after around 10 minutes, my face was swelling up big time. I had to have Hydrocortisone ointment prescribed. So I have now gone back to the lined pocketed cotton ones I made. The "filters" that go into the masks i have made are non woven interfacing. Another idea for the filter to fit into the pocket is to cut off the outside layer of a new disposable nappy but throw it away before you wash the mask after each wear. I had to use whatever I could find at home to make these as only food and animal feed stores and petrol stations are open here in Ireland. We are still in lockdown.

It is a neat idea that I had been looking into myself recently. However, most HEPA filters are made of borosilicate (fiber) glass or polypropylene fibers with a percentage of acrylic binding (think latex paint). That simply ISN'T SAFE for individuals with a latex allergy-or really anyone else for that matter-as you run the risk of inhaling copious amounts of fiber glass material. There are "allegedly" synthetic brands that MAY not contain fiber glass (though still contain the other materials mentioned), but the specifications and transparency of that is murky across different brands. I'm currently looking into other non-woven materials for a safer option.
...Just so you know, one of the tell-tale signs of too much fiber glass inhalation is a sore throat-for those that still choose to make these. Stay safe everyone.

IT CONTAINS FIBERGLASS... DON'T USE. HEPA FILTERS only down to point 5 microns, while the c19 virus particle is .3 microns. Won't work... You are putting people at risk for breathing in fiberglass, or other unknown material... DON'T MAKE THESE MASKS> I just read the guidelines for this where he shows the link, NO WHERE DOES IT SAY TO USE THESE BAGS. It talks about a filtering system in the room, and other equipment, but not the masks. You are fooling yourself if you feel this will keep you safe... You will be inhaling fiberglass or other unknown material that will severely damage your lungs, or whoever wears these masks.

I called the manufacturer who told me they were made of PTFE. But even if it was fiberglass, I will still use this over the risk of illness. Also, the CDC guidelines talk about DIY/homemade masks. I never said or insinuate that the CDC endorsed this, in fact I made a very clear statement that this was a very unscientific study. Just for clarity: HEPA filters take out 99.97 down to 0.3 microns and the viral particle is about 0.12 microns. However, the virus doesn't just float around in the air without being surrounded by moisture. SARS-CoV-2 (the virus) that causes COVID-19 (the disease) is in droplets. When a droplet containing the virus hits the filter it is absorbed by the filtration system and gets stuck to the fabric. It is interesting to note that the N95 masks that are recommended by the CDC only filter out 95% of particulates. It is also interesting to note that the PAPR devices (think hood-like space suits) are considered better than N95 and have... guess what....... A HEPA FILTER!

To alleviate any concerns... here is a link to a HEPA filter mask made by 3M... it is (of course SOLD OUT) but it confirms the current use of HEPA filtration/safety...
      www.achooallergy.com/3m-8293-mask.html
      Please note the description:
When it comes to personal filtration of particles, the gold standard is HEPA. You get that and more with the 3M 8293 HEPA filter face mask. Not only does this respirator offer full HEPA filtration, removing 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns or larger, but unlike other masks, it's rated to remove oil based aerosols and particles. Soft and lightweight, this fully adjustable mask exceeds the CDC recommended N95 rating to help prevent the spread of viruses like the flu, SARS, H1N1, and Avian flu. A valve allows for better air flow while letting moisture and warmth escape. Perfect for the workplace, at home, or on the go, the 3M 8293 HEPA mask is an inexpensive solution for filtering out allergens, oily aerosols, viruses, and germs. Replace after 150 hours of use. One size fits most.

@@SCORP1ONF1RE Thank you for the quick reply. I mean this with no disrespect to the doctor, but I stopped reading when he stated, "...But even if it was fiberglass, I will still use this over the risk of illness." While this doctor may be fine with ingesting fiber glass, many other doctors and medical staff would certainly not be okay with doing so. And we still can't ignore the fact that other chemicals such as acrylic and latex are found in these products as well and could cause severe negative reactions for those being supplied with the masks-even if there was no fiber glass present. It is also important to note that Hepa filters come from different manufacturers-who have different procedures and use different materials. Medical grade Hepa filters versus random vacuum Hepa filter bags...I'm not sure one equates the other; clarification is needed. Most people taking the doctor's advice and sewing these masks will be sourcing their material from all over the place, which may impact quality as well.
Even though this video was prefaced with a lack of scientific fact, it is still endorsed by a doctor. If we're being honest, the average layperson will take a doctor's advice like its scripture-which is dangerous. The cons-in addition to the pros-should of been clearly addressed IN THE VIDEO, as the majority of people watching will unfortunately not have the foresight to do their own research-because the information is coming from a doctor. That is irresponsible. I understand the idea behind wanting to find better protection for those in the hot zone right now (and it is a desperate situation)-but we can't neglect safety in other areas. I can not be encouraged to willingly sew masks for medical staff knowing that there is even the slightest chance that a single person receiving a mask could be adversely affected. That is not my call to make-nor this doctor's. They are going through enough as it is.
I will continue to do some more research on my own about this. In the mean time, I will support hospitals with what they are suggesting I support them with. And I feel that those making these masks should send them with a disclaimer. That being said, most hospitals, at least where I live, will not accept these anyway, so I'll stick to what they are asking for, for now.

As far as I know, it is not recommended the HEPA material to be in contact with one's face, even less to breath through it.
Way batter to have a cotton mask made of two stitched pieces forming a pouch; in the interior of the pouch / filter pocket one should have the HEPA which may be dispensed after every use and the cotton mask washed on a daily basis.
A 5 HEPA hoover bags pack would be sufficient for one person for roughly 60-ish days / two months.
Actually for your model, you would have room for five masks profiles on the hose connector side if you would have on the longitudinal left and right sides the profiles in the mirror - or one the trapezoid base towards the centre, with then second with the base towards the exterior, six on the opposing bag's side.

For communities to wear masks is more about protecting others than it is about protecting yourself. Since the droplets and sprays that contain the virus can't easily escape through a mask, you're protecting others. This is what I have recently learned directly from Hoover customer care:
"Our vacuum bags have only been designed and tested for use in vacuum cleaners. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend for people to turn vacuum bags into makeshift face masks since this could give users a false
sense of security and potentially put them at risk.
Vacuum cleaners mechanically create a condition that facilitates effective filtration through the vacuum bag, but humans are unable to create this condition.
Therefore, these types of masks cannot provide the appropriate filtration and would only provide minimal protection.
With that being said, we are partnering with suppliers that have an expertise, volunteering resources, and redirecting vacuum bag materials that can be used to manufacture face masks to assist in the fight against COVID-19.
This is the best way we can currently help, and we will continue to look for ways to assist.

If it was a serious health hazard, they would be required by law to give all the details. Notice they did NOT do that!!! The 'risk' they mention is the risk to contract CV, but even the 'minimal protection' (in their opinion) the bags provide is better than NO protection. These bags do not contain fiberglass and do not prevent the user from breathing...... therefore I'll be using them. What happened to common sense?????????????????????????? Come on people..... THINK

A couple of things regarding the elastic:
    1. Elastic needs to be stretched at least a few times before you cut it to length, or it will stretch out longer than it's supposed to be when it's worn.
    2. Unless you're using the hard to find Fantastic Elastic, elastic should NOT be cut lengthwise as it will unravel.

Given that these don't have to last long (single patient use in the best-case scenario), and given that most people won't have Fantastic Elastic at home, cutting the elastic is probably OK. I wouldn't, but if it all you have... Or you could just use 1/4 inch elastic if you have it.

I think the solution to elastic would be to simply make ties instead. That way you don't have to worry about if these elastic is too tight for someone to wear it for hours or too loose for people with small heads or it stretching. Ties can always be adjusted for the right fit

    • @aliciamcnamar8203

I used hair bands on the ends . Then to tighten to snug fit I also used string or ribbon . Instead of the hair bands going around the ears I tied the string onto the hairbands so you could pull tight and get it snug. It was a good seal even under the chin.
Also if you cant find pipe cleaners you can use aluminum foil baking pans. cut 1in. x length of face 4in maybe?? and fold in the raw edges so no poking happens.

Great stuff. I would suggest just one improvement. The major issue about producing proper p3 (N99,99) masks is about using microsuturing or gluing. The holes in the fabric at the suture line are the weak points of such DIY masks and if you are to use it in the presence of infected person rather than on the street I would make sure, that additional layer of nonporous material is glued to the suture line. Just a narrow piece of thin flexible plastic could be glued over the suture line on the outside with the glue you used for the nose wire (I am a physician myself so that is not out of blue suggestion).

For anyone making face masks, there have been a few variations on what to use for the fabric to make it the most effective. The last video I watched was of a Doctor's wife who used a Hepa vacuum bag. It made me think of the mattress and pillowcase protector covers that I use. I bought them to protect against allergens and bed bugs. The fabric is breathable! So it might be a good choice for a liner fabric. Just a thought and I wanted to know what other people thought of it. The Evolon material for my pillowcase protector is supposed to used for protective personal equipment as well.

So if all people have available is the cotton people should still keep making those as a next step resort when these vacuum bag ones run out. I work at a hospital and I appreciate this video. My daughter is Special Needs and maybe returning to her Day Program in July. They will require her to wear a mask. I will be making her these mask for her to wear. Thank you for this very informative and timely video.

Thank you. There is an easier way to cut open the bag. If you draw a straight line approximately 4 1/4" across the bag at both of the fused ends, then cut along that line, you can easily access the ends that you need to cut open to flatten out the bag.

Boy, I hate to be a party pooper, but I just contacted Oreck to see if their HEPA bags are made with fiberglass. Here is the response I got: Thank you for your question. First and foremost, we desire for you and others to stay
safe! Our vacuum bags have only been designed and tested for use in vacuum cleaners. Unfortunately, we
cannot recommend for people to turn vacuum bags into makeshift face masks since this could give users a false
sense of security and potentially put them at risk. Vacuum cleaners mechanically create a condition that
facilitates effective filtration through the vacuum bag, but humans are unable to create this condition. Therefore,
these types of masks cannot provide the appropriate filtration and would only provide minimal protection. With
that being said, we are partnering with suppliers that have an expertise, volunteering resources, and redirecting
vacuum bag materials that can be used to manufacture face masks to assist in the fight against COVID-19. This
is the best way we can currently help, and we will continue to look for ways to assist.

This doctor is right in suggesting the Hoover AH10040 for the mask (or same fabric different size big if unavailable). For those people concerned about the vacuum cleaner bags having fiberglass, make sure your mask is made from the HEPA Fiiltrete bag, like the one his wife uses. While this 3M fabric was manufactured for Air filtering, rather than masks, here is what the website says, under the Title "Filtrete":
    3. Specialized filter media allows for optimum airflow. Unlike fiberglass filters, Filtrete Filters help protect your heating and cooling system and improve your indoor air quality by cleaning the air as it passes through the filter. This material is a synthetic possibly like polypropylene.
So, there is NO fiberglass in this one. Personally I think this fabric is GREAT covered by layers of cotton for prolonging the life of the mask filter material

Must realize the most critical aspect of wearing any mask is close facial conformity to the facial anatomy, the cloth margins if the filter is enclosed in cotton fabric and certainly sewing creates perforations which leak, obviating this seal as created with ultrafrequency welding not possiible with this deesign. While I understand the intent they would not meet vertfication standards or grades and could present legal liability if failure ensued. I also note this physician is not well trained in the requirements of aseptic techniques, the most important of which would be mask leak from poor fit due to his beard! I do appreciate he and his wifes valiant attempts, perhaps marginally acceptable, and sorry for deflating the balloon but I am a retired physician with 45 years infection control experience with all varieties of masks and asepsis procedures and have some concern with the rrpresentation of this application!

Yeah, me too. Then yesterday I was in Winco and picked up a four pack of elastic head bands in the hair accessories aisle.. They're about a half inch or so. Otherwise I was going to use the elastic in underwear, but this way I don't have to walk around with "JOE BOXERS" on my face, lol.

I'm making masks and the ladies at walmart said everywhere is sold out of elastic right now. So I got those skinny headbands I see women at the gym wearing for their hair; I just cut one of them in half and sew them together lengthwise to make the length I need and since it's for hair, it won't snag the hair like elastic does.

I have made my own masks using 2 paper kitchen towels, with a HEPA filter between them.I wear these when in a shop for a few minutes.I haven't noticed any throat irritation due to fibreglass. When I was working in the building trade I often encountered fibreglass and Rockwool insulation in roof spaces. These were both incredibly irritating to the throat. If I found my home made mask to be a problem I would recognize the symptoms. As I said I only wear my mask for a few minutes ,I avoid large supermarkets ,I only go to small local shops ,where I can be in and out in a few minutes.
