I've made dozens and dozens of masks in the past month. Tried several different patterns. This one has been the best and most universally a good fit for all. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, for caring enough about others to put countless hours into responding to comments, and for a kind heart that puts up with comments from some people who are not being nice. Ignore them and know that the vast majority of us are very, very grateful and appreciative!
This was the 8th mask pattern I tried - and while it does take slightly longer than the pleated ones, it's absolutely doable and the masks are SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE!! Thank you for this - I'm making these as fast as I can. NOTE: If you have deep-set eyes (a lot of folks of middle eastern/north african descent), this is a great mask. It was the only one I can wear without fogging up my glasses.
Hi Brittany. Being a sister in carpentry, I have an idea for you for the nose piece that I found to work wonderfully. I had a roll of exterior flashing and I decided to try it out as the nose piece in masks that I made. I cut strips out of the metal with a scissor, curved the ends, and did a quick sand of the edges. Then I doubled the strips for more strength and sewed a small pocket for them in the nose area of the mask. Since they are an exterior product, they are corrosion-proof, which makes the mask washable even with the metal strips sewn in. If someone didn't want to wash the mask withe the strips in, they can sew the small pocket for the strips on the inside of the mask, only sewing three sides and they can simply slip the strips out to wash/dry.
Brittany this truly is the best fitting mask. I have lost track of how many of these I have made. I sell them at a artisan run shop in Ontario. They are a clean design and sturdy construction, I make them with only two layers and customers can insert a filter. I had no idea about sowing or using a sowing machine until recently but I was determined to make a face mask! So I checked out many tutorials but yours was the best. Because of your easy instructions, tutorial and downloadable pattern, I managed to use the sowing machine and now I am making beautiful masks for my friends and family. But it's not only that, it's the joy that I get from creating something on my own! I couldn't thank you enough for taking the time to share with us your wisdom and amazing skills!
When I ran out of elastic, I made ear loops by cutting 1" wide loops from tights cut width-wise. For the nose bridge I folded a 5.5" wide piece of aluminum foil twenty times to create a bendable bar 5.5" x 3/8" x 1/16" bar.
This tutorial was kinda fast for beginners but I caught on. After trying 2 other masks this one was by far the best fitting. After trial and error, I can finally make one in less than 30 minutes. Thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial.
I ran out of elastic before the stores were open. I used clean old panty hose. Cut a strip across the leg part about 3 inches wide, cut open, and stretch. It's perfect! I should have thought of that sooner. It is so much more comfortable than some of the other elastics you can buy!
I made these WONDERFUL fitted masks but I changed the way I stitched them together . I didn't have to fold 2 x's. I stitched them together then ironed them over the seam allowance and stitched them down. They turned out beautifully!! Thank you for the free pattern and the amazing idea for the slide beads. I wish I could show you a picture.
I’m not good at sewing, do not own a sewing machine, but I was still able to make one. I love the fit, the adjustable ear strings, the nose adjusting metal. I used materials that I had at home, used needle and thread! Thanks, great tutorial! First one was a fail, but second one, I’m very proud of myself!
Im working on my first mask and I have a couple of suggestions. It would be helpful to mark the patterns with "nose" and "chin" to make it easy to match up the outside and the liner. It would be really helpful to mark the pattern cut on fold along the line. Thanks for the pattern.

I have tried other mask templates, this one by far has been the best for me. I knocked out 6 masks last night. I love them. The fit is dead on. I used pipe cleaners for stronger nose bridge support. Two twisted 4 inch pieces together. I wear glasses and they don't fog up. It is a very simple pattern. I wore one outside today. It works very well.
The wire in surgical masks is 4.5". When you say "twisted" do you mean that the finished length is 4" or the starting length? I'm using pipe cleaners also.
Hi Brittany! I am back to sewing after 28 years during this outbreak to keep busy. I dusted off the old singer, and got busy sewing masks. It took me awhile to learn to sew bias tape masks, especially when my sewing machine started acting up. I was piecing together multiple tutorials to fit my needs. I decided to purchase a new machine, and since bias tape was obsolete, i decided to look for different tutorials and materials to try. I came across your tutorial, and watched it. Decided to give it a try. Boy am i happy i did! I have viewed literally tons of how to videos. ( well not tons, but you get the idea.) I love about this particular tutorial, your simplicity, comprehensive, easy to understand, and alternative materials concepts. This is by far my FAVORITE. I was looking to make smaller sizes for my granddaughters in other tutorials since you only offered medium and large. After frustration, i decided to reach out to you, or re-read the info you provided thinking maybe you updated the sizes to include child size. Then i saw that you mentioned printing the medium size at 12%. BINGO! Thank you again, so much. Kudos to you for helping out this less than novice beginner!
Also, may i mention, my 32 yo son. He is required to wear a mask as a supervisor in a large automotive company. He is so picky, even as a child. After making two different style masks, several times, with no success to meet his "standards", it was then that i found your tutorial. I told him when i made this particular one, that was it, my final attempt! Well, he absolutely LOVES it. He loves the fit, comfort, and actually wears it upside down because he likes more space for his nose. He is so happy with it because he was constantly fogging up his glasses. So i placed a nose piece on the chin side as well. I guess they're correct when they say "The third time is a charm" :)
Best, easiest pattern. I haven't sewn anything from a pattern in 20 years, first one I made I made wrong, but then I figured it out and now I've made 12 of these. I found fantastic nose pieces at a local craft store and they are amazing. this mask never falls down my face, always covering my nose. I finally found elastic and replaced my hair ties that I took apart to use. Made one for my sister and she asked for more, so I made her 3 more. So much fun to make too. @@geegee9137 In her updated version, that includes the kids size, Brittney addresses many of the details... such as sewing the inner and outer layers at the same time. I also added fusible interfacing for a permanent but lightweight "filter". and I made the top seam lightly bigger to fit my nose piece and make it a fit a little lower on the cheeks. This is a fantastic pattern! I am not a seamstress and she made everything so simple!
I'm so happy I found this pattern. I've made close to 100 masks, and have donated some to a local soup kitchen. The homeless population can't come into these places for their meals without masks in many towns. If you get to a place where you can make enough to donate, please remember the agencies who serve the homeless.
The thing I liked about your video with the fact that you gave people some alternatives/suggestions for materials that they may or may not have to create this mask.

Great pattern, like others, I had tried different patterns and love your alternate suggestions for both the nose clip and ties.I made one modification, instead of two ear ties/elastic loops, I made one through both ear hems and then put the elastic behind my head. Works best for my husband who wears hearing aids, the loops around the ears were awkward with the aids. But love it!

I found this pattern early after the start of the pandemic. It has been by far the best pattern that I've made for masks! I don't like the way other masks feel at all. This pattern has been perfect!
God is sooooo good.About 3 months ago while shopping In Walmart for fabric for my Granddaughters prom dress, the lady in line behind be followed me out and offered to give me leftover beads and fabric she had..When I picked the stuff up it was mostly quilting fabric and I haven't quilted in years so I just threw the fabric in a corner in my sewing room and forgot about it. Well, when I realized what God really had in store for me and this fabric I immediately started making mask. I had made over a 100, all with plusses and minuses. But when I ran across your video I knew this is my final pattern. First it was your no nonsense and helpful attitude. Secondly,I didn't have to listen to your life story before you gave instructions. I'm 68 yrs old and I get POed at those women who act like they are auditioning for a talk show host before I hear n e thing useful. I realize my comments are long so plz edit them:D
Yeah, "god" is good. Sends this virus that has killed hundreds of thousands of innocents, with millions more lives to be lost before it's all over, and yet makes sure you get some spare fabric. That's like thanking the serial killer for murdering the family next door, instead of yours. What a great "god"... Just one of the 3,500+ that have been made up by man in all of recorded human history for the purpose of controlling the feebleminded. Like you. At your age, you should be smarter than to idolize some made up mythology. The same attitude you have caused the spread of the Black Death in the 14th century and led to the Renaissance. If it hadn't been for the Dark Ages when the Roman Catholic Church controlled everything and suppressed science, we'd be so much more technologically and scientifically advanced.
Religion aside I agree that this is the tutorial i ll use. I wore well fitting masks during renovations we still ce few leftover and i coulndt think of how to replicate this type of fit. No nonsense approch won me over too!

I just want to say THANK YOU!! This is by far the BEST face mask pattern I have come across. Perfect fit, enough room inside to breathe yet close around all the edges.
I have made 120 of masks using this pattern and most people say it is the most comfortable one to wear. I use T-shirt material instead of elastic, it’s much more comfortable than elastic. I also make a casing for the nose wire to make it easy to remove for washing. Thank you for this superb pattern.
@@bethelmcgraw9995 I make a casing approx 4 and a quarter by 1 and a quarter inches. I allow a quarter inch for sides but only for one long side. The side not turned in, place at the top of the nose on the right side of the lining, with right side facing you. Machine all the way round except for top of nose and one side. Continue to sew lining to other part and when you turn it inside out, the casing will have been enclosed. I use gardening wire double, turning in ends to form loops. Like a few others, I use t-shirt ties, much softer than elastic. I hope this works for you. Any problems, let me know.
I’ve tried 6 different patterns with varying degrees of difficulty and this one fits me the best, doesn’t slip down when I talk and is actually easier to sew than several others. I’ve used elastic or the t-shirt strips . Very versatile . This pattern is a winner for me. Thank you for making it available.
This is by far the best fit and easiest and smartest face mask that I have made. It also has no seam where you breathe and doesn't require pins , so no pin holes either. I tried 5 different patterns. You have made me very happy!! I can tell that I am breathing through the mask, not just having air going around it. Very important. Thank you!!

Great pattern. I have made around 35 of these and shared with co-workers and friends. Even though they may try other masks, they seem to come back to these.
One thing I would like to add, when making the filter liner you might have to use a denim needle to go thru the multiple layers. I am hearing a lot of ppl who's machines are bogging down while sewing multiple layers.
Love this!! I have a rare disease where I don't have or produce antibodies/immunoglobulin. I have been sewing my own very similar protective face masks. I am currently on a Mission2Mask in my neighborhood and throughout my RUclips community. God Bless you for seeing the same vision that I have seen for years in more comfortable and form-fitting masks. I was told the Deaconess masks were the ones needed most..so I learned how to do those as well as the form-fitting ones I have been making for years. Keep up the great work. I have made approximately 20 of these face masks so far for friends and family. All have claimed they are the most comfortable mask they have used. It is the only mask that keeps my glasses from fogging up. I use the 18 gauge wire and electrical tape for the nose piece. It works perfectly. I have switched to 1/8" elastic with a 00 size safety pin for the ear pieces. It allows each user to adjust their own with very little bulk behind the ear. The safety pin hides easily in the channel on either side but can slide out for adjustment. THANK YOU for sharing this pattern.
Your design is great! Ive discovered that even non-stretchy material works well for the straps, so long as it is thin enough to get through beads. Also Dollar General has beads that work.
Made a medium and a large today. Substituted small zip ties for beads. tighten just enough to snug the tshirt material. Great fit. Thank you very much for clear instructions and pattern (downloaded). Even a 70 year old guy can make a good 'un.

Thanks very much- since April 2020 I have made over 200 masks- not for sale- have given to family and friends and sent to family abroad. Great pattern and tutorial.
You can easily get paracord through a bead by first taping the two ends together with ordinary clear tape, (spiraling the tape at the end to a point), then feeding it through the bead and grabbing it with a pliers.
I adjusted my process by sewing the straight edge and corners in one go before cutting out the entire piece from the fabric. I was able to speed up my entire process by doing batch sketching onto a bolt of fabric, then batch stitching, cutting and ironing. I then assemble all three layers (I'm doing ones with pocket) before ironing the folded edges, pinning them with clips as I go before sewing in place. I'm new to sewing and just got a digital machine but my college roommates have been awesome in being my guinea pigs to figure it all out. One works at a grocery store and received so many compliments on the mask design. Thank you for making this tutorial!

@@crossed_threads , you know the straight edge in front and the two cuts for the nose and chin? I sew that only and then cut the whole thing out of the fabric. I do that in one go rather than one long edge, then sewing the nose and chin edges separately. Maybe I should post pics somewhere of how I do it because it's tricky to just explain.
I love this video. I would've used you pattern if I hadn't already made some that are a similar shape but I like that there's no seam down the middle of the mask. I also like the adjustable ear 'straps.' And I also like the speed of the video, no faffing, my sort of video. Some people talk too much and show every single stitch on the machine. I may use your pattern if I make some more. I'm still trying to decide on how to do the elastic as I've seen that elastic round the ears sometimes gives people sore ears but I feel sure making them adjustable would overcome that. Thank you.
Anne Evans - I use around 22” of thin elastic (1/8” wide), and thread it through the side channels in a continuous piece. Then I tie it together, and bury the knot inside one of the channels. Works great for around the head rather than giving yourself sore ears.
I have made a few masks, and instead of having them around the ear (personally, I have sensitive skin AND wear glasses) I used 4 feet of cord (paracord type), melted the ends (so it won't fray). Then when sewing, placed the cord like a U on the mask. So you have a loop that will go behind your neck and then can tie it above your head. Less irritation for the ears (especially if you wear glasses!) Hope that helps!
I love this pattern. I use two layers with no filter. Most of my friends love this mask I also put the ear loops in a bit differently. But this is my go to pattern. I guess no it’s hybrid pattern since I tweeted a few things. My friends and a family say it’s the best most comfortable mask. I make it with a filter with three layers of fabric for a professor who lectures several days a week and after trying other masks she only wears the ones i made for her. Kudos to you and many thanks!
Hi Brittany, I can’t thank you enough for creating the pattern for these masks, your wonderful instructions on how to finish the masks properly, I had not touched a stewing machine in 40 years, so it definitely was a learning experience for me. My family tell me that your mask is the best and most comfortable.
Lovely. Suggestion, I would skip the pin part at the very end, a surgeon DIY video using HEPA filters suggested not putting ANY pins as pinholes create extra exposure.
T-shirt fabric makes a great substitute for elastic since it has the same amount of stretch. Just cut strips ALONG THE WIDTH that are at least 1/2" wide. Stretch both ends, and both sides will curl to the middle. Now you can use it for the ear straps.
I didn't have any t-shirts to cut up, but had an old pair of knit pants and used them instead and they worked exactly the same! This is a great pattern!
I used your tutorial and made masks for my family. I used a file folder fastener (I got this idea from a different tutorial and it worked well) for the nose piece - it's about the weight of the nose piece for N95 masks. I reduced the pattern to 75% and made it for my 3 year old granddaughter. We are like the fit - my daughter is a doctor and she was very pleased with it!!!

Never in a million years did I think a former Marine would be learning to sew to make masks in a pandemic .... but the USMC has a saying... Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome...
@@PrettyHandyGirl I used 40# interfacing in between the liner and outer cloth... I found it to be easy to breath through and provides slight structure to the mask. This in conjunction with the nose piece, keeps the mask open and helps stabilize it in place on one's face. My wife loves it. Thank You
Best pattern I have used, and easy enough even for me with limited sewing skills. I used the medium size liner and a 80% print size of the same liner for my kid(he is 6) , and it fit perfectly. Sharing this with all my friends and family.

This is THE BEST fitting face mask design I've found - When I printed off the templates they weren't to size, but I managed to size them up on my printer/scanner for adults using the LARGE and used the Medium template (but kept it NOT sized up) for my grandsons. They love them, as do their mum and dad who work for our NHS - they have to wear a mask when going to work and the boys wear them to school. I do make and sell them, but just enough to cover costs and only to family and friends who have asked me to make them.
Thanks for quick and easy to follow steps. I found another way to make nose wire: I used floral wire cut into two 3.5”-4” lengths. I placed them parallel on a 5”x1” piece of iron-on patch material. Just fold long sides over the wire and iron to seal and hold wires place. Trim end to best size.
I tried rubber coated flex tie for the nose clip and it is working well. Time will tell how it holds up to repeated washing. You can find it in the garden department. I found some at the dollar store. You will likely have to increase your top seam allowance. I put a 4" or 5" long piece in the top of my mask and it really helped keep my glasses from fogging up.
I used the same rubber coated wire for gardening in my garage. I used it in my original mask, I have been washing and drying it regularly for the last month. Its holding up well.
I have been using 24g electronics wire that comes on a spool. You can braid 2 wires together. used to able to buy it in Radio Shack, but it's still available on Amazon.
After struggling to get the paracord through a craft bead, I finally found an easy way that works for me. And FAST! After pulling out the white insides of the paracord to make the cord easier to squish, I took an elastic hair holder ( the cheap thin kind) and cut it open into a long string. The hair elastic was thin enough that I can easily push a loop (doubled the elastic into a loop) of it through the bead, insert the paracord into the loop and pull it all through the bead with ease! I'm so happy that I threaded a bunch of them to have on hand for the next batch of masks, I guess I wouldn't have had to cut the elastic, but hindsight is 20/20, and it works. My favorite are the elastic headbands! They are a good ‘softness’ on the ears, a little thicker than pony holders. One headband cut in half = two ear pieces = 1 mask. The dollar store has these.
I made this face mask today and it is perfect! The fit is spot on and it looks great too. I will be making more for my sisters, my 98 year old Mum and a few other loved ones in my sphere. I had made other masks but no matter how carefully I measured, etc., none of them fit or sat well on my face. I used two Glad bag twist ties, stacked and wrapped in electrical tape, for the nose piece and it works perfectly. I am now digging around in my office supplies for some file folder clamps which would be perfect. The hardware shops are not open here now (Covid 19 shutdown), so can't get gardening or other types of wire.
I have used this pattern to make of 150 masks which I have given away or sold. Everyone who wears these masks says they are the most comfortable ones they own. I am using para cord with a bead for the ear pieces. The para cord is easier on the ears because it does not irritate like the elastic. Thank you for putting together this design.
Suzy G. I have made at least 50 of this style and will no doubt make 100 more before this party is over and you are correct they are really a great mask. Good full coverage, space in front of your face, no feeling like you are wearing a sock. I use jewelry wire and find it very strong and flexible. It is good to have a lot of fabric slows down the rate of air flow. Customers also have the option of a putting a filter in.. I use a 1 1/2 inch strip of t shirt for the one piece tie behind your neck or ear loops put through a pony bead. I buy the 5X t-shirts from Walmart and you get more T-shirt for your dollar. The sleeves cut up great for the loops. 🇨🇦

For the adjustable nose piece I used the braided wire from a picture hanging set (1 piece instead of 2 since it's wide) and Gorilla tape instead of electrical tape. It bends easily and holds its shape. This is a nice, form-fitting mask and I can still breathe through it. Took longer to make, but worth the effort. Thanks so much for posting!
I continue to try to find an easy to make, well fitted mask. Yours fit the bill, so thanks! In my latest iteration to make the sewing/pressing a little easier, I changed out the pressing/sewing order. After cutting and sewing the darts, I sewed, right sides together the inside to the outside piece, matching darts with a 1/4 inch seam on the top and bottom. I pressed the seam allowance toward the outside. When turned and flattened, the outside rolls to the inside creating the same effect as pressing and folding.
When I didn’t have elastic, I just used yarn and crocheted a chain stitch. It is strong and super stretchy. Worked so well that I am still using it even though I now have elastic. It’s softer and everyone loves that.
FYI : I tightly wrapped a 5" x 5" piece of heavy duty aluminum foil around a chopstick, then slid it off and flattened it. I then used this for the nose clip. It worked pretty well for me.
I make them but hadn’t thought about creating an adjustable ear 👂🏼 elastic. Excellent idea!!!! If I can find beads, I will definitely incorporate this into my masks 🎭 . Thank you!
I use the coffee bag clasps too! They work really well. You can even see them directly on top of existing masks with a straight line down the middle to avoid the metal edges. It's best wait until you have a batch with this approach though, because it will wear down your needle.
This is the best pattern! Made the first one for myself to test fit and gauge the level of difficulty in making it. Easy to make and it fit perfectly. Made one for my husband who likes this mask the best of all of the various patterns I’ve tried. Finally made one for my sister...who is a little fussy sometimes...and she LOVES it. :) Thank you so much!
These are the best instructions & patterns for the most comfortable fitting facemasks. At first I used the long closer on small donut bags which are longer than coffee bags. I definitely don't need to eat bags of donuts to keep up with the demand for these amazing masks. This is the best & least inexpensive way I make nose pieces. I use two unused twist ties from the grocery store fresh vegetable area. I lay them close together on the middle of white electrical tape. I fold the tape on each side towards the middle of the twist tie covering it. I use paracord which is extremely comfortable to wear around the ears. I cut them 17 inches for medium size mask & 18 inches for size large. I burn the ends of the cord. I use small different colored plastic beads which cost $1.98 for a 500 count bag. I created an extra large pattern increasing the size for men with beards & decreased the size to small for children. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I'm fortunate to be retired, can sew & able to help others during this very difficult time.
Finally found a tutorial that uses things around the house! Also I can't wait to dig into my craft studio to find my fabric, beads, and wire that I haven't used in years! Stay well!

I made this mask for the first time tonight (and I've made several different designs the last few weeks!) and I was concerned that the beads behind the ears might hurt. I just kept sewing while I thought about the problem (not to mention that I don't have any beads) and then I remembered the bungees that my kids used to use with their swim goggles. I had some old cord stops in my sewing kit so I made one horizontal head/neck elastic rather than one for around each ear. I ran some elastic up through one side of the mask, down through the other, pulling through enough slack to fit around my head at the top and around my neck at the bottom, threaded the ends through the cord stop and knotted them like Brittany does here, and it works great. No ear pressure, quick design. I don't know if craft beads would let you do this but each of the kids has a goggle bungee so I can at least get them fitted with masks as things open back up here and they're expected to wear something in public. (they are young adults, not little ones...) I was afraid the mask might scrunch too much at the sides but it doesn't at all. Very nice, Brittany, THANK YOU!!!
I think this is a great pattern and clear instructions! Tee shirts cut in 1-inch strips when pulled make a nice cord. Very soft. One tip I have (because I didn't have the electrical tape) is to encase whatever wire you use the seam binding or grosgrain ribbon with your sewing machine. Double the ends so the wire can't poke through. Also, not sure if it offers more protection, but a folded paper towel placed inside the mask stays put, even without the pocket. Since it's nonwoven, I think it really will help filter. Just throw away after going out. Thanks so very much for sharing this Brittany. If we have to wear masks, it might as well be comfortable to fun looking.
@MO mo I've decided to use fusible interfacing on the inside. It's non woven so should help filter. ( I sew, so I happened to have a bolt of it). There is so much info out there it's overwhelming. I think whatever you make or material used, it's better than no mask at all.
I read an article, to mask or not to mask, where the man (I believe his name was Peter Tsai) materials specialist who developed a technology that the N95 mask uses, advised to use the blue paper towels as mask liners (or masks) due to their strength, and also durability as they may be washed and reused. I already have some on hand and plan to make masks for myself and others. I will use the blue paper towels as inner filters. Blue paper towels are considered “shop” paper towels, and (were once!) available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.
Sheila Fisher ....I am applying fusible interfacing as well. I like how she reminds us that the more fabric you use as layers could make breathing hard something I experienced when using one of my masks.
@@kaze_cat There are at least 2 articles about a business in California that got an expensive machine to test different materials and it said blue shop towels in 2 specific brands filtered better than cotton and better than another brand of blue shop towels. Here it was just $12 for a huge roll. But there test showed it was effective for maybe only 3 washes and not sure if that meant hand wash or washing machine. Article was kinda unclear. Anyway I have been enjoying using blue shop towels in masks kind of (as no-sew mask with stapler, there are videos...or insert in cotton mask) except I much prefer things that can be machine washed over and over and over. So I loved a video about nonwoven cloth filtering more than cotton does but that it is nice to sandwich it between 2 cotton layers. Still researching though...bet there is much more to learn but as of this moment those are tips I am enjoying. Always do your own research though.
@@SharonRepici I'm making these for my mum who has COPD ...using a liner Plus filter pocket makes them difficult to breathe through with a liner placed inside. So, I adapted it slightly and made to side pieces and used them instead of a full liner, then added the pocket piece making sure the side liner and pocket edges overlap. This means the wearer has two fabric layers with no gaps, plus filter if used.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this pattern and the advice on finding materials to pull it together. I made the pattern one inch bigger all around. With this adjustment, the finished product fits perfectly over KN95 masks. This double layer allows protection of ourselves and others and makes it possible to preserve the KN95, changing your "outer" mask daily. I've made many for family and friends using found fabric and contrasting the lining with different fabrics. Everyone loves them!
Hi i have made 10 of these so far very easy to make. I have used two strips of plastic coated garden wire ( it can be bought in 15m lengths for about £1.50 )enclosed in electrical tape for the nose piece. Instead of placing the wire inside the the top fold and then stitching the folded seam I have inserted the prepared wire in the seam after it has been sewn. Just need to remember to make the prepared wire as narrow as possible, It is quite easy to do provided you leave enough space, the 1/2 fold allowance is enough. I did this because it is difficult to sew it in place whilst stitching along the fold. I am very pleased with the result. They are a good neat fit .
I love this design. My Husband does too. I have watched several videos and thought yours to be the best because of the area of coverage. My husband is an RN, he said that your design is a very comfortable fit and doesn't fog up his glasses like the other masks he has worn. This is great for him for when he has to do his charting or other nursing duties. Thank you for such a great design. I particularly like the coverage on my face and the way it curves under my chin. I use pipe cleaners for the nose area. I can get 3 out of 1 pipe cleaner. I just tape up the ends. Works great. You are awesome Brittany.
I just bought my first sewing machine and this is the second mask pattern I've attempted. I did it! It isn't perfect but it works perfectly, and I will get better at them. The Medium is a bit big on me so I made another one and folded the top and bottom over one more time. That worked well, so the height of it is smaller but the width stays the same. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together for us!
This is the best fitting mask I’ve seen. I’ve tried several from patterns online but this one by far is the best. Thanks for giving us the template. I’m not a sewer so need that template badly! Be well. A tip - I have no pony beads so I made two paper beads and varnished them. They are so light weight that I hardly feel them.
Did you find that the paracord can shrink if wet (washed). Also suggest washing the fabric before making mask for the following reasons: 1 if 100% cotton may shrink when washed 2 Fabric finish can give give off odors. Especially if polyester is mixed with cotton. 3 Some fabric dye may ‘run’ when wet. Possibly on wearers face or in laundry

None of the others fit my much bigger husband nor I very well. The masks are nice, i just prefer the ones that are cut to dip/contour further down from under the eyes because i don't like the cloth being so close up under my eyes.

I love your video and patterns for your BEST FIT FACE MASK. I have been purchasing limited masks for family and friends but most of them don't fit and with some patterned fabrics, the seam down the middle seemed like extra work and the pattern matching was impossible. I kept thinking about how the masks I had could be improved and thought "why don't they use darts instead of a seam on each side?". I started an internet search and I like yours the best. I have most of the materials and will start cutting and sewing tomorrow. I also liked the fact that you used an iron in the process of sewing and it has a very professional look. My mother was a professional seamstress and I do not sew anywhere as well as she did, but I learned a lot through the years. Mahalo
I've made a variety of masks and this is the one which my hubby likes the best - got to admit that I haven't worn this style yet, as I work in retail so have made ones which help people who lip read! Going to make a lot of these now as I'm in the UK and we've only had mandatory mask wearing for a few weeks (it's end of Sept 2020 as I write this)!
I've made dozens and dozens of masks in the past month. Tried several different patterns. This one has been the best and most universally a good fit for all. This was the 8th mask pattern I tried - and while it does take slightly longer than the pleated ones, it's absolutely doable and the masks are SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE!! Thank you for this - I'm making these as fast as I can.
NOTE: If you have deep-set eyes (a lot of folks of middle eastern/north african descent), this is a great mask. It was the only one I can wear without fogging up my glasses.

Hi Brittany. Being a sister in carpentry, I have an idea for you for the nose piece that I found to work wonderfully. I had a roll of exterior flashing and I decided to try it out as the nose piece in masks that I made. I cut strips out of the metal with a scissor, curved the ends, and did a quick sand of the edges. Then I doubled the strips for more strength and sewed a small pocket for them in the nose area of the mask. Since they are an exterior product, they are corrosion-proof, which makes the mask washable even with the metal strips sewn in. If someone didn't want to wash the mask withe the strips in, they can sew the small pocket for the strips on the inside of the mask, only sewing three sides and they can simply slip the strips out to wash/dry.

I had no idea about sowing or using a sowing machine until recently but I was determined to make a face mask! So I checked out many tutorials but yours was the best. Because of your easy instructions, tutorial and downloadable pattern, I managed to use the sowing machine and now I am making beautiful masks for my friends and family. But it's not only that, it's the joy that I get from creating something on my own! I couldn't thank you enough for taking the time to share with us your wisdom and amazing skills!
When I ran out of elastic, I made ear loops by cutting 1" wide loops from tights cut width-wise. For the nose bridge I folded a 5.5" wide piece of aluminum foil twenty times to create a bendable bar 5.5" x 3/8" x 1/16" bar.

I took a disposable cookie sheet from the dollar store. I cut out strips of the sheets, flatten them covered them in duct tape, worked perfectly.
This tutorial was kinda fast for beginners but I caught on. After trying 2 other masks this one was by far the best fitting. After trial and error, I can finally make one in less than 30 minutes. Thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial.
I ran out of elastic before the stores were open. I used clean old panty hose. Cut a strip across the leg part about 3 inches wide, cut open, and stretch. It's perfect! I should have thought of that sooner. It is so much more comfortable than some of the other elastics you can buy!
I made these WONDERFUL fitted masks but I changed the way I stitched them together . I didn't have to fold 2 x's. I stitched them together then ironed them over the seam allowance and stitched them down. They turned out beautifully!! Thank you for the free pattern and the amazing idea for the slide beads. I wish I could show you a picture.
I’m not good at sewing, do not own a sewing machine, but I was still able to make one. I love the fit, the adjustable ear strings, the nose adjusting metal. I used materials that I had at home, used needle and thread! Thanks, great tutorial! First one was a fail, but second one, I’m very proud of myself!
Im working on my first mask and I have a couple of suggestions. It would be helpful to mark the patterns with "nose" and "chin" to make it easy to match up the outside and the liner. It would be really helpful to mark the pattern cut on fold along the line. Thanks for the pattern.

I have tried other mask templates, this one by far has been the best for me. I knocked out 6 masks last night. I love them. The fit is dead on. I used pipe cleaners for stronger nose bridge support. Two twisted 4 inch pieces together. I wear glasses and they don't fog up. It is a very simple pattern. I wore one outside today. It works very well.
Pipe cleaners rust immediately when the masks are washed.

The wire in surgical masks is 4.5". When you say "twisted" do you mean that the finished length is 4" or the starting length? I'm using pipe cleaners also.
Hi Brittany! I am back to sewing after 28 years during this outbreak to keep busy. I dusted off the old singer, and got busy sewing masks. It took me awhile to learn to sew bias tape masks, especially when my sewing machine started acting up. I was piecing together multiple tutorials to fit my needs. I decided to purchase a new machine, and since bias tape was obsolete, i decided to look for different tutorials and materials to try. I came across your tutorial, and watched it. Decided to give it a try. Boy am i happy i did! I have viewed literally tons of how to videos. ( well not tons, but you get the idea.) I love about this particular tutorial, your simplicity, comprehensive, easy to understand, and alternative materials concepts. This is by far my FAVORITE. I was looking to make smaller sizes for my granddaughters in other tutorials since you only offered medium and large. After frustration, i decided to reach out to you, or re-read the info you provided thinking maybe you updated the sizes to include child size. Then i saw that you mentioned printing the medium size at 12%. BINGO! Thank you again, so much. Kudos to you for helping out this less than novice beginner!
Also, may i mention, my 32 yo son. He is required to wear a mask as a supervisor in a large automotive company. He is so picky, even as a child. After making two different style masks, several times, with no success to meet his "standards", it was then that i found your tutorial. I told him when i made this particular one, that was it, my final attempt! Well, he absolutely LOVES it. He loves the fit, comfort, and actually wears it upside down because he likes more space for his nose. He is so happy with it because he was constantly fogging up his glasses. So i placed a nose piece on the chin side as well. I guess they're correct when they say "The third time is a charm" :)
Best, easiest pattern. I haven't sewn anything from a pattern in 20 years, first one I made I made wrong, but then I figured it out and now I've made 12 of these. I found fantastic nose pieces at a local craft store and they are amazing. this mask never falls down my face, always covering my nose. I finally found elastic and replaced my hair ties that I took apart to use. Made one for my sister and she asked for more, so I made her 3 more. So much fun to make too. @@geegee9137 In her updated version, that includes the kids size, Brittney addresses many of the details... such as sewing the inner and outer layers at the same time. I also added fusible interfacing for a permanent but lightweight "filter". and I made the top seam lightly bigger to fit my nose piece and make it a fit a little lower on the cheeks. This is a fantastic pattern! I am not a seamstress and she made everything so simple!
I'm so happy I found this pattern. I've made close to 100 masks, and have donated some to a local soup kitchen. The homeless population can't come into these places for their meals without masks in many towns. If you get to a place where you can make enough to donate, please remember the agencies who serve the homeless.

Great pattern, like others, I had tried different patterns and love your alternate suggestions for both the nose clip and ties.I made one modification, instead of two ear ties/elastic loops, I made one through both ear hems and then put the elastic behind my head. Works best for my husband who wears hearing aids, the loops around the ears were awkward with the aids. But love it!

I found this pattern early after the start of the pandemic. It has been by far the best pattern that I've made for masks! I don't like the way other masks feel at all. This pattern has been perfect!
God is sooooo good.About 3 months ago while shopping In Walmart for fabric for my Granddaughters prom dress, the lady in line behind be followed me out and offered to give me leftover beads and fabric she had..When I picked the stuff up it was mostly quilting fabric and I haven't quilted in years so I just threw the fabric in a corner in my sewing room and forgot about it.
Well, when I realized what God really had in store for me and this fabric I immediately started making mask.
I had made over a 100, all with plusses and minuses. But when I ran across your video I knew this is my final pattern. First it was your no nonsense and helpful attitude. Secondly,I didn't have to listen to your life story before you gave instructions. Yeah, "god" is good. Sends this virus that has killed hundreds of thousands of innocents, with millions more lives to be lost before it's all over, and yet makes sure you get some spare fabric. That's like thanking the serial killer for murdering the family next door, instead of yours. What a great "god"... Just one of the 3,500+ that have been made up by man in all of recorded human history for the purpose of controlling the feebleminded. Like you.
At your age, you should be smarter than to idolize some made up mythology. The same attitude you have caused the spread of the Black Death in the 14th century and led to the Renaissance. If it hadn't been for the Dark Ages when the Roman Catholic Church controlled everything and suppressed science, we'd be so much more technologically and scientifically advanced.
Religion aside I agree that this is the tutorial i ll use. I wore well fitting masks during renovations we still ce few leftover and i coulndt think of how to replicate this type of fit. No nonsense approch won me over too!

I have made 120 of masks using this pattern and most people say it is the most comfortable one to wear. I use T-shirt material instead of elastic, it’s much more comfortable than elastic. I also make a casing for the nose wire to make it easy to remove for washing. Thank you for this superb pattern.
How do you create the casing? I am a novice sewer and I like the idea of removing the wire for laundering.
@@bethelmcgraw9995 I make a casing approx 4 and a quarter by 1 and a quarter inches. I allow a quarter inch for sides but only for one long side. The side not turned in, place at the top of the nose on the right side of the lining, with right side facing you. Machine all the way round except for top of nose and one side. Continue to sew lining to other part and when you turn it inside out, the casing will have been enclosed. I use gardening wire double, turning in ends to form loops. Like a few others, I use t-shirt ties, much softer than elastic. I hope this works for you. Any problems, let me know.

I’ve tried 6 different patterns with varying degrees of difficulty and this one fits me the best, doesn’t slip down when I talk and is actually easier to sew than several others. This is by far the best fit and easiest and smartest face mask that I have made. It also has no seam where you breathe and doesn't require pins , so no pin holes either. I tried 5 different patterns. Great pattern. I have made around 35 of these and shared with co-workers and friends. Even though they may try other masks, they seem to come back to these.
One thing I would like to add, when making the filter liner you might have to use a denim needle to go thru the multiple layers. I am hearing a lot of ppl who's machines are bogging down while sewing multiple layers.

If sewing machines are bogging down because of the multi-layer thickness, TRY using a different sized needle to accommodate those layers.
It you have a walking foot to replace the pressure foot that may help.

Love this!! I have a rare disease where I don't have or produce antibodies/immunoglobulin. I have been sewing my own very similar protective face masks. I am currently on a Mission2Mask in my neighborhood and throughout my RUclips community. I have made approximately 20 of these face masks so far for friends and family. All have claimed they are the most comfortable mask they have used. It is the only mask that keeps my glasses from fogging up. I use the 18 gauge wire and electrical tape for the nose piece. It works perfectly. I have switched to 1/8" elastic with a 00 size safety pin for the ear pieces. It allows each user to adjust their own with very little bulk behind the ear. The safety pin hides easily in the channel on either side but can slide out for adjustment. THANK YOU for sharing this pattern.
Your design is great! Ive discovered that even non-stretchy material works well for the straps, so long as it is thin enough to get through beads.
Also Dollar General has beads that work.

You can easily get paracord through a bead by first taping the two ends together with ordinary clear tape, (spiraling the tape at the end to a point), then feeding it through the bead and grabbing it with a pliers.
What size paracord? what size bead hole?
Sorry, just saw this... anyway, 5/32" (3.9mm) paracord works great.
I adjusted my process by sewing the straight edge and corners in one go before cutting out the entire piece from the fabric. I was able to speed up my entire process by doing batch sketching onto a bolt of fabric, then batch stitching, cutting and ironing. I then assemble all three layers (I'm doing ones with pocket) before ironing the folded edges, pinning them with clips as I go before sewing in place.
I'm new to sewing and just got a digital machine but my college roommates have been awesome in being my guinea pigs to figure it all out. One works at a grocery store and received so many compliments on the mask design. Thank you for making this tutorial!

@@crossed_threads , you know the straight edge in front and the two cuts for the nose and chin? I sew that only and then cut the whole thing out of the fabric. I do that in one go rather than one long edge, then sewing the nose and chin edges separately. Maybe I should post pics somewhere of how I do it because it's tricky to just explain.
I love this video. I would've used you pattern if I hadn't already made some that are a similar shape but I like that there's no seam down the middle of the mask. I also like the adjustable ear 'straps.' And I also like the speed of the video, no faffing, my sort of video. Some people talk too much and show every single stitch on the machine. I may use your pattern if I make some more. I'm still trying to decide on how to do the elastic as I've seen that elastic round the ears sometimes gives people sore ears but I feel sure making them adjustable would overcome that. Thank you.
Anne Evans - I use around 22” of thin elastic (1/8” wide), and thread it through the side channels in a continuous piece. Then I tie it together, and bury the knot inside one of the channels. Works great for around the head rather than giving yourself sore ears.
I have made a few masks, and instead of having them around the ear (personally, I have sensitive skin AND wear glasses) I used 4 feet of cord (paracord type), melted the ends (so it won't fray). Then when sewing, placed the cord like a U on the mask. So you have a loop that will go behind your neck and then can tie it above your head. Less irritation for the ears (especially if you wear glasses!) Hope that helps!

I love this pattern. I use two layers with no filter. Most of my friends love this mask I also put the ear loops in a bit differently. But this is my go to pattern. I guess no it’s hybrid pattern since I tweeted a few things. My friends and a family say it’s the best most comfortable mask. I make it with a filter with three layers of fabric for a professor who lectures several days a week and after trying other masks she only wears the ones i made for her. Kudos to you and many thanks!
Hi Brittany, I can’t thank you enough for creating the pattern for these masks, your wonderful instructions on how to finish the masks properly, I had not touched a stewing machine in 40 years, so it definitely was a learning experience for me. My family tell me that your mask is the best and most comfortable.
Lovely. Suggestion, I would skip the pin part at the very end, a surgeon DIY video using HEPA filters suggested not putting ANY pins as pinholes create extra exposure.
This really fits well and I appreciate the adjustable elastic feature. I did put more curvature on the chin and that made it fit better.
T-shirt fabric makes a great substitute for elastic since it has the
same amount of stretch. Just cut strips ALONG THE WIDTH that are at
least 1/2" wide. Stretch both ends, and both sides will curl to the
middle. Now you can use it for the ear straps.
Nurse friends say they love the t-shirt elastic better because it doesn't cause breakdown behind the ears.
I didn't have any t-shirts to cut up, but had an old pair of knit pants and used them instead and they worked exactly the same! This is a great pattern!

I used your tutorial and made masks for my family. I used a file folder fastener (I got this idea from a different tutorial and it worked well) for the nose piece - it's about the weight of the nose piece for N95 masks. I reduced the pattern to 75% and made it for my 3 year old granddaughter. We are like the fit - my daughter is a doctor and she was very pleased with it!!!

@@PrettyHandyGirl I used 40# interfacing in between the liner and outer cloth... I found it to be easy to breath through and provides slight structure to the mask. This in conjunction with the nose piece, keeps the mask open and helps stabilize it in place on one's face.

Best pattern I have used, and easy enough even for me with limited sewing skills. I used the medium size liner and a 80% print size of the same liner for my kid(he is 6) , and it fit perfectly.

This is THE BEST fitting face mask design I've found - When I printed off the templates they weren't to size, but I managed to size them up on my printer/scanner for adults using the LARGE and used the Medium template (but kept it NOT sized up) for my grandsons. They love them, as do their mum and dad who work for our NHS - they have to wear a mask when going to work and the boys wear them to school. I do make and sell them, but just enough to cover costs and only to family and friends who have asked me to make them.
Thanks for quick and easy to follow steps. I found another way to make nose wire: I used floral wire cut into two 3.5”-4” lengths. I placed them parallel on a 5”x1” piece of iron-on patch material. Just fold long sides over the wire and iron to seal and hold wires place. Trim end to best size.
I tried rubber coated flex tie for the nose clip and it is working well. Time will tell how it holds up to repeated washing. You can find it in the garden department. I found some at the dollar store. You will likely have to increase your top seam allowance. I put a 4" or 5" long piece in the top of my mask and it really helped keep my glasses from fogging up.
I used the same rubber coated wire for gardening in my garage. I used it in my original mask, I have been washing and drying it regularly for the last month. Its holding up well.
I have been using 24g electronics wire that comes on a spool. You can braid 2 wires together. used to able to buy it in Radio Shack, but it's still available on Amazon.
After struggling to get the paracord through a craft bead, I finally found an easy way that works for me. And
FAST! After pulling out the white insides of the paracord to make the cord easier to squish, I took an elastic hair holder ( the cheap thin kind) and cut it open into a long string. The hair elastic was thin enough that I can easily push a loop (doubled the elastic into a loop) of it through the bead, insert the paracord into the loop and pull it all through the bead with ease! I'm so happy that I threaded a bunch of them to have on hand for the next batch of masks, I guess I wouldn't have had to cut the elastic, but hindsight is 20/20, and it works. Maybe this will help someone else. Thank you so much, Brittany, for sharing your great ideas!

My favorite are the elastic headbands! They are a good ‘softness’ on the ears, a little thicker than pony holders. One headband cut in half = two ear pieces = 1 mask. The dollar store has these.

I found some 10mm OD silicone jump rings on Etsy ($4.95/100) that were easy to thread onto the tee shirt straps.
I made this face mask today and it is perfect! The fit is spot on and it looks great too. I will be making more for my sisters, my 98 year old Mum and a few other loved ones in my sphere. I had made other masks but no matter how carefully I measured, etc., none of them fit or sat well on my face. I used two Glad bag twist ties, stacked and wrapped in electrical tape, for the nose piece and it works perfectly. I am now digging around in my office supplies for some file folder clamps which would be perfect. The hardware shops are not open here now (Covid 19 shutdown), so can't get gardening or other types of wire.
I have used this pattern to make of 150 masks which I have given away or sold. Everyone who wears these masks says they are the most comfortable ones they own. I am using para cord with a bead for the ear pieces. The para cord is easier on the ears because it does not irritate like the elastic. Thank you for putting together this design.
Suzy G. I have made at least 50 of this style and will no doubt make 100 more before this party is over and you are correct they are really a great mask. Good full coverage, space in front of your face, no feeling like you are wearing a sock. I use jewelry wire and find it very strong and flexible. It is good to have a lot of fabric slows down the rate of air flow. Customers also have the option of a putting a filter in.. I use a 1 1/2 inch strip of t shirt for the one piece tie behind your neck or ear loops put through a pony bead. I buy the 5X t-shirts from Walmart and you get more T-shirt for your dollar. The sleeves cut up great for the loops. 🇨🇦

For the adjustable nose piece I used the braided wire from a picture hanging set (1 piece instead of 2 since it's wide) and Gorilla tape instead of electrical tape. It bends easily and holds its shape. This is a nice, form-fitting mask and I can still breathe through it. Took longer to make, but worth the effort. Thanks so much for posting!
I continue to try to find an easy to make, well fitted mask. Yours fit the bill, so thanks! In my latest iteration to make the sewing/pressing a little easier, I changed out the pressing/sewing order. After cutting and sewing the darts, I sewed, right sides together the inside to the outside piece, matching darts with a 1/4 inch seam on the top and bottom. I pressed the seam allowance toward the outside. When turned and flattened, the outside rolls to the inside creating the same effect as pressing and folding.
When I didn’t have elastic, I just used yarn and crocheted a chain stitch. It is strong and super stretchy. Worked so well that I am still using it even though I now have elastic. It’s softer and everyone loves that.
FYI : I tightly wrapped a 5" x 5" piece of heavy duty aluminum foil around a chopstick, then slid it off and flattened it. I then used this for the nose clip. It worked pretty well for me.

I use the coffee bag clasps too! They work really well. You can even see them directly on top of existing masks with a straight line down the middle to avoid the metal edges. It's best wait until you have a batch with this approach though, because it will wear down your needle.

This is the best pattern! Made the first one for myself to test fit and gauge the level of difficulty in making it. Easy to make and it fit perfectly. Made one for my husband who likes this mask the best of all of the various patterns I’ve tried. Finally made one for my sister...who is a little fussy sometimes...and she LOVES it. :) Thank you so much!

These are the best instructions & patterns for the most comfortable fitting facemasks. At first I used the long closer on small donut bags which are longer than coffee bags. I definitely don't need to eat bags of donuts to keep up with the demand for these amazing masks. This is the best & least inexpensive way I make nose pieces. I use two unused twist ties from the grocery store fresh vegetable area. I lay them close together on the middle of white electrical tape. I fold the tape on each side towards the middle of the twist tie covering it. I use paracord which is extremely comfortable to wear around the ears. I cut them 17 inches for medium size mask & 18 inches for size large. I burn the ends of the cord. I use small different colored plastic beads which cost $1.98 for a 500 count bag. I created an extra large pattern increasing the size for men with beards & decreased the size to small for children. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I'm fortunate to be retired, can sew & able to help others during this very difficult time.

I made this mask for the first time tonight (and I've made several different designs the last few weeks!) and I was concerned that the beads behind the ears might hurt. I just kept sewing while I thought about the problem (not to mention that I don't have any beads) and then I remembered the bungees that my kids used to use with their swim goggles. I had some old cord stops in my sewing kit so I made one horizontal head/neck elastic rather than one for around each ear. I ran some elastic up through one side of the mask, down through the other, pulling through enough slack to fit around my head at the top and around my neck at the bottom, threaded the ends through the cord stop and knotted them like Brittany does here, and it works great. No ear pressure, quick design. I don't know if craft beads would let you do this but each of the kids has a goggle bungee so I can at least get them fitted with masks as things open back up here and they're expected to wear something in public. (they are young adults, not little ones...) I was afraid the mask might scrunch too much at the sides but it doesn't at all. Very nice, Brittany, THANK YOU!!!
I think this is a great pattern and clear instructions! Tee shirts cut in 1-inch strips when pulled make a nice cord. Very soft. One tip I have (because I didn't have the electrical tape) is to encase whatever wire you use the seam binding or grosgrain ribbon with your sewing machine. Double the ends so the wire can't poke through. Also, not sure if it offers more protection, but a folded paper towel placed inside the mask stays put, even without the pocket. Since it's nonwoven, I think it really will help filter. Just throw away after going out. Thanks so very much for sharing this Brittany. If we have to wear masks, it might as well be comfortable to fun looking.
@MO mo I've decided to use fusible interfacing on the inside. It's non woven so should help filter. ( I sew, so I happened to have a bolt of it). There is so much info out there it's overwhelming. I think whatever you make or material used, it's better than no mask at all.
I read an article, to mask or not to mask, where the man (I believe his name was Peter Tsai) materials specialist who developed a technology that the N95 mask uses, advised to use the blue paper towels as mask liners (or masks) due to their strength, and also durability as they may be washed and reused. I already have some on hand and plan to make masks for myself and others. I will use the blue paper towels as inner filters. Blue paper towels are considered “shop” paper towels, and (were once!) available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.
Sheila Fisher ....I am applying fusible interfacing as well. I like how she reminds us that the more fabric you use as layers could make breathing hard something I experienced when using one of my masks.
@@kaze_cat There are at least 2 articles about a business in California that got an expensive machine to test different materials and it said blue shop towels in 2 specific brands filtered better than cotton and better than another brand of blue shop towels. Here it was just $12 for a huge roll. But there test showed it was effective for maybe only 3 washes and not sure if that meant hand wash or washing machine. Article was kinda unclear. Anyway I have been enjoying using blue shop towels in masks kind of (as no-sew mask with stapler, there are videos...or insert in cotton mask) except I much prefer things that can be machine washed over and over and over. So I loved a video about nonwoven cloth filtering more than cotton does but that it is nice to sandwich it between 2 cotton layers. Still researching though...bet there is much more to learn but as of this moment those are tips I am enjoying. Always do your own research though.
Leave the open of one of the layers for the filter , it’s proved that towel paper can reach to N70. We can use it as filter, double is better.
If you use the filter layer it is already open at both sides, no need to leave the lining itself open.
@@SharonRepici I'm making these for my mum who has COPD ...using a liner Plus filter pocket makes them difficult to breathe through with a liner placed inside. So, I adapted it slightly and made to side pieces and used them instead of a full liner, then added the pocket piece making sure the side liner and pocket edges overlap. This means the wearer has two fabric layers with no gaps, plus filter if used.
I made one of these and it’s perfect. I have made tons of masks but yours is the best by far.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this pattern and the advice on finding materials to pull it together. I made the pattern one inch bigger all around. With this adjustment, the finished product fits perfectly over KN95 masks. This double layer allows protection of ourselves and others and makes it possible to preserve the KN95, changing your "outer" mask daily. I've made many for family and friends using found fabric and contrasting the lining with different fabrics. Everyone loves them!
Hi i have made 10 of these so far very easy to make. I have used two strips of plastic coated garden wire ( it can be bought in 15m lengths for about £1.50 )enclosed in electrical tape for the nose piece. Instead of placing the wire inside the the top fold and then stitching the folded seam I have inserted the prepared wire in the seam after it has been sewn. Just need to remember to make the prepared wire as narrow as possible, It is quite easy to do provided you leave enough space, the 1/2 fold allowance is enough. I did this because it is difficult to sew it in place whilst stitching along the fold. I am very pleased with the result. They are a good neat fit .
I love this design. My Husband does too. I have watched several videos and thought yours to be the best because of the area of coverage. My husband is an RN, he said that your design is a very comfortable fit and doesn't fog up his glasses like the other masks he has worn. This is great for him for when he has to do his charting or other nursing duties. Thank you for such a great design. I particularly like the coverage on my face and the way it curves under my chin. I use pipe cleaners for the nose area. I can get 3 out of 1 pipe cleaner. I just tape up the ends. Works great. You are awesome Brittany.

I just bought my first sewing machine and this is the second mask pattern I've attempted. I did it! It isn't perfect but it works perfectly, and I will get better at them. The Medium is a bit big on me so I made another one and folded the top and bottom over one more time. That worked well, so the height of it is smaller but the width stays the same. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together for us!
This is the best fitting mask I’ve seen. I’ve tried several from patterns online but this one by far is the best. Thanks for giving us the template. I’m not a sewer so need that template badly! Be well. A tip - I have no pony beads so I made two paper beads and varnished them. They are so light weight that I hardly feel them.
Did you find that the paracord can shrink if wet (washed).
Also suggest washing the fabric before making mask for the following reasons:
1 if 100% cotton may shrink when washed
2 Fabric finish can give give off odors. Especially if polyester is mixed with cotton.
3 Some fabric dye may ‘run’ when wet. Possibly on wearers face or in laundry
Little girl hair bands work as the adjuster when you do t have beads. Easier than buttons. And maybe they’re still available.

None of the others fit my much bigger husband nor I very well. I have watched a LOT of videos about making face masks. What I love best about yours is all of your resourceful ideas of how to make these out of items WE ALREADY HAVE AT HOME!!!! The masks are nice, i just prefer the ones that are cut to dip/contour further down from under the eyes because i don't like the cloth being so close up under my eyes.
those pattern and these instructions are super amazing !! i found a third of a pipe leaner also works awesome for the nose and is easy to find and dirt cheap to use !! hope that helps for those of you struggling with craft wire and coffee bags .
I love your video and patterns for your BEST FIT FACE MASK. I have been purchasing limited masks for family and friends but most of them don't fit and with some patterned fabrics, the seam down the middle seemed like extra work and the pattern matching was impossible. I kept thinking about how the masks I had could be improved and thought "why don't they use darts instead of a seam on each side?". I started an internet search and I like yours the best. I have most of the materials and will start cutting and sewing tomorrow. I also liked the fact that you used an iron in the process of sewing and it has a very professional look. My mother was a professional seamstress and I do not sew anywhere as well as she did, but I learned a lot through the years. Mahalo
I've made a variety of masks and this is the one which my hubby likes the best - got to admit that I haven't worn this style yet, as I work in retail so have made ones which help people who lip read! Going to make a lot of these now as I'm in the UK and we've only had mandatory mask wearing for a few weeks (it's end of Sept 2020 as I write this)!
