I have made over 250 masks for the workers that need them. I have donated every one of them. Most of them have gone to the nursing home where my husband is at. Now I'm going to give them to anyone and everyone that wants or needs them. I'm so glad you are showing me how to do them with the ties. Thanks so much

Wow...that is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, Everyone should wear a mask in public. Even a bandana or towel mask. These will stop and curb the release of particles from an infected person into the air when someone sneezes and coughs...even talks. This is mandatory in China when you go into grocery stores. I recently saw people coughing without covering their mouths while in the produce section.

Lori, thanks so much for the detailed tutorial. I have been making them non stop for my coworkers. I am an x-ray technologist and we are now being told our N95's are to be used indefinitely. As we are the ones who x-ray every COVID patient, we need to wear the N95's multiple times a day. So, I am doing the fabric masks to wear over them and then using a new fabric mask each time I x-ray a patient. Your template would help me make this process go so much faster. Thanks once again for helping us healthcare workers and for all you do for us , this little sewing community.

I cut my squares 1/2" larger than the pattern so around 7 1/2" by width of fabric. I used 1/2 yard for all 3 pieces and was able to make 3 masks in nothing flat. I did backstitch my ties as I wasn't quite as accurate in getting thing in the corners so they could be stitched along the side. This is by far the easiest and quickest way to make this mask! (I am terrible at the pleats as one side is always wider than the other!) Thank you Lorrie for this pattern and tutorial!

@@ShesComplicatedDesig Since I was using 1/2 yard, I cut a strip 7.5" wide and as long as the fabric was. Then I folded the long strips into 3rds and was able to cut 6 pieces at a time to give me 3 linings or pockets or fronts at a time. I am not too good at cutting more than 6 layers at a time!

Thanks, Lorrie. Great job. I've made a boat load of masks using different patterns. This one looks good. I use a pipe cleaner.. I'm a retired OR nurse and have plenty of experience with masks. These should fit tight against your face. Use once then place the contaminated mask in a closed laundry container until you are ready to launder.. Don't touch the mask while wearing or removing. Remove only by touching the strings. Wash hands after handling. Don't touch the used masks, instead, dump them into your basin. I hand wash mine in a dedicated basin in my laundry room tub in very hot water and detergent, rinse well . Air dry. Iron. Steam kills germs. The mask is considered contaminated after you wear it. Stay safe, stay home...Distance yourself, don't gather with anyone..even if you wear a mask.

I started with your mask design months ago and found it so easy to work with. I made several masks quickly and easily. As the months of the pandemic have passed, I have watched countless videos of other designs. A friend made me a pleat jig and suggested I try one of the other popular designs. I made several masks using that design. I can honestly say that your design is still my favourite. It is not fiddly. It is quick to make. It uses less fabric overall than the pleated design. The fit is great for most of my family (one son requires a minor adjustment of the template due to length of his face). So thank you so much for doing this video and putting the template out there. I’ve been making them for our small business that takes care of elderly people in their homes, a mask for each caregiver and each client. Your video is the first one that totally resonated with me. And your assembly line tips are exactly what I needed to keep things from becoming so chaotic in my sewing room. Right now it looks like a bomb went off in it. My daughter-in-law is a ICU nurse and I will also be sending some masks her way. If you happen to have an extra set of the acrylic templates that would be awesome, and I am happy to pay for them.Just wondering how I can get my mailing address to you. Thank you again, you are such a blessing.

I just made my prototype. Your directions are clear, simple and precise. I watched so many and made two other masks I did not like. This one is great and I'm going to make for all our family members and then go from there. I am immunocompromised and older, and these are going to take away a lot of anxiety! Hardest part was the template, so I'm going to work on a better template but now I feel I can "mass produce" these easily once I have a better template. Thank you!!

Please Forward to all sewers everywhere. I don’t know how to post this on line. Anybody receiving this, please pass it on as you see fit.
I am sewing masks for one person who has had a brain injury and tying strings behind the head is just too hard. I also am sewing for one person who has the use of only one hand, as well as for a number of people with bad shoulder injuries. I don’t have elastic, so I have been using cloth ribbon.
To make a mask that you can put on one handed or which requires tying no strings, or reaching behind the head ( can be used for either pleated or contoured masks):
    1. Determine which side is the persons most mobile side.
    2. On that side, sew in two button holes on the edge of the mask, top and bottom.
    3. On the other side sew in the ends of the ties.
    4. Thread ties through button holes.
    5. If you can find them, put both ties through a plastic spring toggle such as are used on stuff sacks.
    6. Knot ends of ties so they don’t come back out of the toggle.
    7. Even if you don’t have a toggle, this allows mask to be put on and adjusted by tying only one set of strings and it is not behind your head so you can see it in a mirror and you are not stretching your shoulders.
Happy sewing and godspeed to all

Eileen Taylor I am going to make a little channel for a wire between the liner and pocket before continuing the assembly (right before she sandwiches the three layers together). I personally have found it easier to wash without wire.
EDIT: an easier way to make a channel for a wire is to just make your top stitching at the top of the mask wide enough to accommodate a wire. You can then slide the wire between the liner and filter pocket layers at the top of your mask.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I made a template using foam core board. Also, another tutorial uses Pellon 830 for a sew-in filter, so I just made a third layer using the Pellon. When sewing the layers together I laid the Pellon down first, then the lining and outer fabric right sides together and sewed the whole sandwich. I am making these for friends and family, not healthy care workers. But you should still be able to wash these in hot water as the Pellon 830 is often used as sew-in interfacing.

    Hi Lorrie!
This pattern was PERFECT!!!! HOWEVER user error here..... I did cut the pattern out of a thick cardboard but little by little I cut off a sliver of the card board edges, which ended up changing the size of the masks. My husband is a correctional officer at 1 of the Connecticut prisons and unfortunately this virus has started hitting them inside the prison. So I'm trying to make masks that will fully cover their nose/mouth and chin, which yours do .... So I know I'm probably the hundredth person asking for the plastic templates.... I would want to pay you for them though. So please let me know if it's possible or not. If not, I 100% understand...

Melissa H I always trace small paper patterns like this on thin, flexible, cutting mats that you cut fruit and vegetables on. I usually trace them and cut the fabric with scissors. My mom can trace and then cut on the trace lines with her rotary cutter without using the template. It is possible to slice through a cutting mat with a rotary cutter like you were doing on the cardboard. Tracing does not add a lot of time. You can pin the layers to keep from shifting before cutting. Although pinning is frowned upon for creating larger holes in the fabric.

Also I ended up adapting the pattern a but because I wanted to have loops over my easier and for me more comfortable. I cut pony tail elastic at the join and used one on each side and then I pinched 1/4 inch in the center of each side and sewed a tiny pleat which masks the mask fit really well for my husband doing this made the mask too tight so in his I made a fabric extension on the bottom of each side. Thanks SO much for your video!! I have a Fire Fighter son - making as many as I can and distributing to the different fire stations - they have to wear them 27/7 while they are on shift. then into their Bunker gear and Hasmat suits for their calls... but these are so comfortable for the Off-Duty time. Also have a good friend who is the head of the Emergency Dept at a hospital in NC. Hopefully will be sending at least 150 to her :) I decided to do the strings, but my Nurse friend asked if I can put BOTH the ties and the elastic for the ear loop - ( I went to the Dollar Store and bought a bunch of the hair ties - cut in half is a perfect eat loop! Using File Folders for the templates... Would love a couple of your templates if you have any left. What a GREAT way to reduce my fabric stash!!

Thank you! I have tried many patterns and this is my favorite now. One quick suggestion for others - make an Adult Medium by cutting the Adult Large but sew with a 3/8” seam allowance instead of the 1/4” you would use for the large. Adult Large was a bit big for me (kept getting in my eyes) but Adult Small Just didn’t give quite enough coverage. That 1/4” difference in the seam allowance made the perfect difference for me!

Thank you, this is the easiest tutorial for making more than one at a time. Our local nursing homes and hospitals are wanting these masks as the elastic ones are doing damage to the ears of those that have to wear them for long periods of time. Now to try and tape several pieces of cardboard together for a template, hehehe. Be well!

    • @MissGeicoBecky
      @MissGeicoBecky 4 года назад +1

mudbunnie1 I always trace small paper patterns like this on thin, flexible, cutting mats that you cut fruit and vegetables on. I usually buy those at my grocery store. I’m sure you can find them online at home stores or Amazon. I usually trace them and cut the fabric with scissors. My mom can trace and then cut on the trace lines with her rotary cutter without using the template. It is possible to slice through a cutting mat with a rotary cutter if you are cutting it the way she does in the video. Eventually, that would change your pattern. Tracing does not add a lot of time. You can pin the layers to keep from shifting before cutting. Although pinning is frowned upon for creating larger holes in the fabric.

If you're using these masks for personal use, and not using these as a cover for the N95 masks, you can put an added layer/filter for extra protection while you're out in the world for necessities such as the pharmacy or the grocery store. Also, if you're a non HCW, you may also want to use these cloth masks (with a filter inserted...some people are using filter sheets, HEPA filter bags, garden cloth, reusable cloth bags, coffee filters, paper towels, etc.) at work or on your commute to work. I'm planning on making masks for my former co-workers who are considered essential personnel but don't have access to surgical or N95 masks. Hope this helps.

      -Stitch Ties
-Stitch mask faces together in center. Front liner
-Double fold straight edge of liner and stitch then stitch together the center curved edge
      -snip curves
      -Pin 3 pieces together:
1st lay down the liner face up
2nd lay filter on top, face up
      3rd lay front face down
-Stitch across top and bottom edge
-Turn right side out between front and pocket
      -Iron
-fold sides in 1/2” and press
-Add ties in the corners and pin.
      -sew down sides
-top stitch around entire mask on edge.
