  • In this short video essay, I'll go over how a few games and media manage to find overlooked and creative ways to completely mess with the mind of the person experiencing it. We'll go over games such as The Complex, Subnautica, and even one of the best horror stories I have ever read. I hope you'll enjoy it!
    Horror story:

A personal favorite type of horror is the horror/fear of size. Depictions of gigantic monsters so large that you seem like a mere speck, but not too large to make them seem absolutely alien (as in, so large that they can be treated as natural phenomena and geography) absolutely fills me with a mixture of awe and fear. Solar Sands actually has two videos that illustrate this effect wonderfully; Thalassophobia covers the fear of the sea, something covered here but the video covers it in more detail. Specifically, Solar Sands talks about both the fear of the unknown (a classic and the focus of your video) but also the fear of drowning, a calm and excrutiating death. What I find so notable about the video is the imagery and art Solar Sands uses, specifically leviathans, maws agape, facing skyward. The sheer size of them, the speck of the divers, unaware of the horrors below, terrify me to a dizzying extent.
Similarly, Monumentality talks about size, but with a focus on awe instead of fear. There are no beasts this time, but Solar Sands details monstrously large paintings of palaces and other monuments, seeming as if they could swallow you whole. If they are not terrifying they are dizzying in size, and I love it.

I'm very interested in seeing the future of horror stories since this perfectly sums up how while a little jumpscare can scare someone, there're much more effective ways to it. also looking forward to when you go viral again like the genshin video did

so first off, a side note that all the lights where i’m sitting suddenly went off right before i began watching which accidentally set the mood. ok now actually i don’t consume horror media that much. i cannot handle the jumpscares and gory things, as they make my skin crawl in a different way that isn’t thrilling the way i think horror is supposed to be. it puts me off from most horror media because of it and is why i refuse to watch horror movies because it relies on both these things too much for my liking.
i do love horror in the end, but when i say that i mean in all the ways the video described. that uneasy feeling that wont go away. because you feel constantly threatened with no release of that tension with a jumpscare, its somehow more scary. doki doki literature club was the first horror thing i really consumed and yes, the game has traditional jumpscares with something freaky rushing towards you at a quick speed, but that is like one or two times at most. the real fear comes from this feeling that something is absolutely *wrong.* and then, of course, shit hits the fan and it gets crazier. Not to mention that “oh fuck, they’re in my laptop” feeling because you can literally watch game files delete in front of your very eyes. calling you by your real name. breaking that fourth wall with someone straight up stand looking directly at you every time they’re on screen. its uncanny. its unnerving. and that is why this genre of horror just shines imo. great video as always! i always liked how you edited intros so yeah. also i’ll make sure to check out that creepypasta. the premise seems pretty interesting.

The moment you mentioned a game that didn't even market itself as a horror game, I guess Subnautica. Its a classic.
Also, that last clip was really good.

My dude, Subnautica 100% is a horror game.
Look at the reaper and ghost leviathans and tell me that it’s not a horror game.
