- This is a brief overview of the new Theta "MSX" guitar floor controller by ISP. This includes all of Michael Sweet's new presets in a slightly smaller unit compared to his original ISP Theta Pro signature model.
Also in the demo I used a DIY Kramer "5150" with a Pariah Pasadena "Black" pickup, and a GMW Oz Fox "SPE" with a Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis Distortion pickup.

When you are talking about the stage outs and the speakers simulation to be on , on the global settings …. Those setting are on the isp unit right?
Yes, those settings are on the ISP unit.

Can it be plugged directly into an amplifier using the stage outs?
Yes absolutely. It's probably more ideal to go into the back of an effect return to bypass the preamp, but I've used it both way.

@@AviationFreak1 Does your amp have a separate volume control for the loop itself? My JSX has this feature. If your's does, then make sure it's not turned all the way down. Also, check the level "stage out level" knob on the face of the MSX Theta, and make sure your input signal is hot enough. What amp are you using?

That's comparing apples to oranges. They are both great. I favor my Helix for certain occasions, and favor the ISP Theta for it's own specific capabilities. It really depends what you intend to use it with.
Can you do another demo of other patches like zak wydle, and heavier. Thx.
How would you connect a wah pedal to it. Out to speaker? (Headrush) Or into expression pedal input?
Personally I would go straight into the pedal from the wah....
Can you non nasally distortion sounds with the unit.? Or just the stryper sound?
Yes of course. Those Stryper presets have a ton of "cocked wah" effect or parametric EQ...but the other presets and tones don't contain that sound.

So the presets are usable right out of the box? or did you have to go in and tweek them...? You know how most of the time the presets given are unusable with some products-Curious to know and interested in the MSX!
The stock Stryper presets are amazing right out of the box. I found several other presets to be very useful as well...especially some of the clean/chorus 80's style presets. I mainly bought this for the Stryper tones so I haven't dug too deep in the others. But yes, many of the other stock presets are very good as well.
I just bought the isp meta msx but it didnt have a manual. Could you give me the proper way to set up. I have a seymour duncan stereo piwer amp and a marshall cabinet that can be run in stereo or mono. Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi Ron, I would highly encourage you to email ISP and request a PDF copy of that manual...it is absolutely necessary to have the manual in order to learn how to setup some of the deeper menu items. You can reach them here: info@isptechnologies.com I wouldn't be surprised if Buck himself replies to your message. But for starters, the biggest thing to set up initially is the built-in cab sim. If you are running through a power amp and guitar cab, then you might want to experiment with ISP's cab sim. You can disable it in the global menu for all presets. But, I would encourage to also try it both ways. I used my Theta through a similar power amp like yours into a 4x12 and I thought it sounded better with that cab sim turned on for that scenario. But definitely email them and ask for a PDF of that manual!!

How is it for direct recording ... no usb
You'll need some type of interface, preferably one with stereo inputs. I have hooked mine up through the Helix, where the Helix is just simply used as an interface and the ISP Theta passes through to my DAW.

@@misterscary505 They removed one row of footswitches from the old "Pro" unit to the new "MSX" version. I think it's just as useful. The presets are nearly identical. The new unit has a few more Stryper related patches as well, but the core patches were pretty much the same.
Can you use this in place of a power amp direct to a 2x12? Or you need a power amp with this?
If the 212 does not have a power source, then you would need some type of power amp. I hooked mine up to the JSX 412 cabinet in the background, but used an ISP Stealth power amp to push it. Otherwise, if you are going to a set of powered studio monitors or FOH system you are fine without a power amp.
Can you run this to an EVH 4x12 cab from a power amp?
Yes, these are designed to be used just for that purpose. You can disable the speaker simulation on either the "Stage out" or the "Direct Out". For your setup, I'd use the "stage out" and go directly into the power amp, then into the EVH cab. Thanks for watching.

@@misterscary505 From the list of about 100 factory presets, I found nearly 30 that were REALLY outstanding, granted many of those were Stryper related because that's the whole point for me anyway. However, there are a few such as the "Whitesnake" preset, the "80's pop clean" and quite a few others that really shine on this unit. I haven't had time to do any more demos...but if you can, check out the older video of Ethan Brosh demo'ing the early version of the "Pro" pedal in red. Wait until you hear the clean tones this thing has.
@@CoffeeDrinker71 Yes, I've checked out Ethan's videos. The cleans are amazing .. along with the distortion preamp tones .. both are right up my alley.
Forgot to ask...can you get feedback if you stand close to the FRFR monitor? I love being able to get controllable harmonic feedback.
It's possible but it would need to be really loud.

Thanks!!! Yeah, I own a Helix as well. It's hard to compare them because they offer completely different tones and functionality. As far as the two different ISP Theta choices, the yellow one has more footswitching options, but the black one is slightly smaller and more compact. The black one also has MS's new "album" presets if that makes a difference. Both are great units though.

To my ears these guitar patches sound so much like "lead" channel on Zoom GFX-1, no difference at all! Furthermore Theta overall looks are pretty much like of GFX-1 to me as well.
Ok...seems as though you are one of the few guys I've found where I share a lot in common - I love 80's metal, VH, Stryper, Ratt, Ozzy, etc. AND I play guitar for my church (P&W) AND I am in my own original Christian hard rock/metal-ish band. I am currently running a Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 direct for church and into a Tech 21 Power Engine 60 (power amp) for my band. It is really cool, compact, portable, and all analog. However, it has it's limitations and only gets as heavy as a hot-rodded Plexi will get. I recently picked up a Mooer 005 micro preamp pedal (5150 III) and it sounds cool and heavier, but I will still need other pedals which creates issues with power supplies, cables, etc.
I've considered a real amp...PRS MT15 and have also considered units like Helix (new POD Go), Headrush Gigboard, iSP Theta, etc because they are compact, portable, and give you a bunch of fx. I don't necessarily need a lot, which is why I've held off...I don't need 500 amps and effects. I'm really just looking for a couple great tones, but do like to use some fx now and then.
I'm basically looking for one rig to handle worship, blues, and hard rock/metal, easy to transport, reliable, and sound great. Our other guitarist uses a 60-watt Marshall and he easily overpowers. Of course tubes eventually die. So since you've owned them all - real amp, Helix, iSP...is there one you prefer? I'm really digging the PRS MT15's small size, real 6L6 tubes, and heavy tones, but do I want to deal with a tube amp? Then again, do I want to deal with menus and tweaking of a digital multi-fx unit that I'll only use a couple patches and worry about firmware updates, etc. ? Any help? Thanks!
John Connor Hi John! You are definitely right. I grew up listening to 80’s rock/metal (and still do to this day) but also play in church and love P&W music. I’ve looked at those Tech 21 Fly Rigs before but like you mentioned it didn’t have quite everything I wanted in a P&W rig. You’ve mentioned some good options and I know it’s a huge dilemma between pricing and practicality. Personally, I like the freedom of “stomp box” style layouts, where I keep one amp tone for the setlist, and have the ability to add effects or O/D as needed. I haven’t taken a deep look at the new POD GO but that sounds intriguing for our purpose. The Helix has been WONDERFUL, but like you said it could be overkill. It really depends on the style of P&W you are playing? Is it modern, traditional, gospel, etc.? There are also several pedal board sized power amps like the Strymon “Iridium” but that’s only for someone who wants to build out a full pedal board. It sounds like you need a good, basic system that doesn’t require a bunch of tweaking, and gives you all the effects that you want. I’ve tried carrying amps to church...not fun, so I would rule that out if it were me. The trade offs from using a real amp just aren’t worth it IMO. Have you looked at the Boss ME-80? I played the older ME-70 in church for several years and had GREAT tone! It’s affordable, it’s easy to operate (no menu diving) and contains the majority of Boss’ effects library. You can use it like a series of stompboxes, or you can program presets. I always used it in stompbox mode. It also runs off of a single 9V power adapter, or can be used with AA batteries! Another question for you....how do you monitor your signal? IEM’s or a wedge?

@@rccampbell460 There is a "Van Dirty" preset on the MSX...but there is not the "Hard Rock RTM" preset. There is one called "Hard Rock Lead". I can email Buck and ask if those two patches are the same excepted with a lead boost. I like that one too. I played it on the ISP Theta Pro, it's a killer patch.

@@rccampbell460 I've emailed Buck at ISP this morning about those two presets. He's going to look into it and get back with me. Yeah, I know it's a really tough call to make when you can't demo one in person. I have a Helix too, and I use both. I really depends on the tones I want, or the application I'm using either one of these for...and the same will probably apply to you as well. My advice would be to order one from a store such as Sweetwater that has a great return policy, then try it out in person at home and see what you think.
I'm super picky about chorus, and hold the Dytronics stuff as the high bar standard...
ISP has done the closest as well as Shiva/RedSeven 'Wave' units...they should be proud.
That's said...every heavy distortion I've heard outta the ISP processors all have that "cocked-wah" Schenker sound that reminds me of 80's distortion pedals. Hope that can be dialed or flattened out in the pre/post EQ section.

Really enjoyed your demo! Just started researching these units. Is it my understanding these are just for FOH or FRFR set-ups? Neither of which I have. So, running it into my Friedman BE100 with it’s 4 x 12 is not optimal, or will it even work at all through that type of set up? Thank you, and blessings!
Hi David! Thanks for watching and commenting! No, these units work great with amps too. You can run this straight into a loop return on the amp and bypass the preamp section...OR you can run it through the front of the amp's clean channel. I've done both with my Peavey JSX and it sounded GREAT! There's another video here on my channel where I've done this (ran it straight into the front of the head). I've also hooked these up into the effects loop return of a Mesa Rectifier and an EVH 5150 head in stereo with fantastic results. The only thing to keep in mind when running this into an amp or speaker cabinet is to turn off the speaker emulation in the global settings. It wouldn't hurt anything if you don't, but it improves the tone quite a bit. Hope this helps! Cheers!

I just tried that specific patch called "Dime"....it's VERY similar to the other Stryper patches. It has that identical parametric EQ hump on the mids. It's very cool. It reminds me of their "Soliders" tone.

@@Ericksonvision Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I love my Helix, in fact I have a pretty accurate Stryper patch that I wrote just for it. But, when you want the real deal this is the best way to go! Funny you mention the Helix, I almost went into my full setup in this video but decided not to bore everyone. I am actually running the ISP Theta through the send/return of the Helix in a blank patch. That way, I'm able to preserve my current studio monitor hookups along with the Friedman ASM-10 as a "dry" center channel for the primary tone. That way I don't have to keep hooking or unhooking gear just to play between the Helix and the ISP floor controllers! So, I now have a patch just for the ISP Theta that's a blank patch but with a routing configuration that gives me a few more options like running a W/D/W setup!

How do you feel about the mid gain tones?
I think they are very good! It has a nice range of artist style presets covering ZZ Top, Van Halen, and quite a few others. The clean tones are also to die for!
