  • In the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the Whodunit quest is a Dark Brotherhood fan favorite! Today we'll explore the various ways it can unfold as well as what The Elder Scrolls 6 can learn from it.
Of particular note is the need to enhance the speech skill and disposition system, far beyond what we saw in Skyrim, borrowing some goods parts from Oblivion and fixing the bad.
Who knew an Elder Scrolls house party could be so much fun?

People tend to forget how great Oblivions AI was. I remember reading an interview with one of the devs. He talked about how they couldn't figure out why after so many hours of a play through, the dark elf at the beginning of the game always ended up dead in his prison cell. The problem ended up being the guards would run out of food, so the guard with the key would break in, kill him, and take his food. The solution wasn't to fix the code, it was give the guards more food lol

There’s multiple cases of Oblivion’s AI making decisions the Devs didn’t account for, such as the Drug Dealer at Bravil getting ganked by the Skooma addicts, City Swimmer getting caught and summarily executed for theft, NPCs going hunting with their fists and getting killed by Predators etc.
I wonder in any similar problems occurred in Skyrim, or if the Devs were able to build the AI with this in mind…

Divinity II has this great mechanic called “Tags” and you pick two tags during character creation. It’s essentially character backgrounds like “warrior, noble” etc and characters will address you based on your race or one of your two tags and you even have dialogue options based on your tags. This would be an awesome TES6 mechanic

It's a quest I can play a new way each time! Most recently
    - Walked in with a sparse inventory. Party outfit, lockpicks, and inconspicuous magic items like amulets with life detect
    - Played along with the scavenger hunt on the first day, confiscating all the stashed weapons in the house
    - Steal and use Neville's mace. Killings begin.
-Eat a sweet roll after each kill
    - Killed Matilde, who is normally on the ground floor by herself anyways.
-Took out Dovesi with Nel's stashed sword. Put cheese on her body because that's why she went in the cellar.
    - Killed Primo in his sleep
    - Turn Nels and Neville on each other at the same time. Neville will fumble his armor chest that's empty.
    - With the final survivor, "find" the actual gold. Do the deed and have a sweet roll.
    - Plant weapons on each of their bodies and leave

Having more variety couldn't hurt at all. If I'm an assassin, throwing frenzy darts or poisoned knives at my enemies from a darkened corner adds to the experience.
There's no reason they couldn't do it either, they have the time, technology, and resources. So there shouldn't really be any sacrifices to save time on development.

It was awful in terms of speech checks you could fire pistols all the time and improve your speech skill, and on top of that they are just there in the dialogue menu making it so much easier to use and requiring less thinking. Gothic 2 had much better choices even though it came before new vegas, heck even in this quest you actually had to talk to people to get new dialogue options. Disco elysium has the best speech checks in any game making even the consequences very captivating

Indeed, it's a reference to an old Norse saga. It all starts when a young otter decides to eat his morning catch with his eyes closed so he doesn't have to see how the fish gets smaller with every nibble.
One thing leads to another, and next thing you know there's a dragon guarding a hoard of cursed gold spawned from the magic ring of a robbed dwarf.

This was always my favorite quest just to mess around with the different scenarios and I didn't even know that some of the dialogue is disposition based as my usual Mo would be to just bribe them till they like me because I didn't like the mini game. But I specifically remember two different runs I did which ended with me and the Redguard and another one with me with the noble dude killing someone in the basement before I killed them. I actually really liked having them as allies and then just turning on them at the last possible second. This quest really brings out the psychopath and everyone and to be honest that's why it's fun.

That whole questline is my absolute favorite. In skyrim, they were despicable, but in oblivion they were absolutely depraved. The things you do, are just horrible. Then you get to the ending, read the diary, and then you realize how deep that rabbit hole goes. The quests are fun, but they constantly remind you, that you are the villain.

I wrote my first fanfic, shortly after Oblivion came out, about Olga (Nels daughter) being the one that prayed to the Night Mother. Basically, her father ran when the bandits attacked leaving her behind. When she escaped the bandits, Neville blew her off because she was just a Barbarian. Dran was a child new to the city and saw fit to pelt the misshapen Nord with rocks as she was a bully. Petitt was the one that hired the mercenaries (bandits) to try and reclaim some semblance of her family's former glory, and Primo just snubbed her. All of them had created and added to her suffering. It was a prayer that didn't leave much gold for the Dark Brotherhood but one that the Night Mother would have heard very well.
    I love this misson!

My favorite thing was to have my last two people be Primo and Dovesi because you can get pretty interesting reactions from them. I'm pretty sure if you talk to Dovesi, she'll say something about not being able to believe it's Primo, but knowing it can't be you. Then she'll go attack him. It was funny to me pinning the two people who looked each other against one another. Even if ones interest was much greater than the other's

They won't even know it's you and you get the bonus. The Redguard was about to put his armor on but i just hit him once and he died,

Six sweet rolls, six guests, you can remove one each time you kill a guest, and everyone is trapped in a manor..
This, plus the characters’ personalities, seems like it’s referencing Agatha Christie’s ‘And Then There Were None’. A young lady, a former military man, a young guy who does reckless things out of boredom, a buff and cheery guy, and an old defenseless lady - suppose that makes us Judge Wargrave.

It would also be cool if TES 6 had the reverse of this quest in the game, where you were just a regular house guest and had to figure out who exactly the real killer was (Obviously this wouldn’t involve the Dark Brotherhood quest line from your POV, although that would be a really cool intro into the guild- where you strangely find them randomly performing a job and you had the choice to either turn the killer in, kill them, or just straight up ignore it; then later on giving you an audience with a guild leader). That kind of quest would bring up a lot of nostalgia for the past players without strait up copying such a great quest. 🦦

For those saying this quest inspired things like Among Us- it's not an original idea. I recommend the Agatha Christie novel this was heavily lifted from, "And Then There Were None" (not just the whole conceit, but also minutiae like the sweetrolls, the anonymity of the host and presence of a storm, which is the book's excuse for their being trapped). Actually a decent read.

    • @lazilycatharticone4191
      @lazilycatharticone4191 3 года назад

Hmm... I'm thinking "Murder on the High Seas", since Hammerfell is known for its sailors. So maybe a merchant ship from Highrock set to port in Sentinel. You hop on as a guest, paid for by whatever assassins guild is available.
Personally if the DB is limited to Skyrim and barely able to expand, I vote for the Morag Tong to make a comeback. Since Solstheim alluded to that happening.
The goal is to kill all the guests on board, maybe start with the ship captain so the boat would be stranded in the Iliac Bay. From there, you can kill whomever with a mixed variety of reactions from the passengers and guards on board. Depending on how you off them of course. There'd even be creative ways to kill, placed by the devs. Poison the banquet, push a passenger off into shark infested waters, trap a sailor's foot in the chains of the anchor and release the lever. Steal a valuable item from a Nobel and place it in a commoners room, framing them for theft leading to their execution by the guards. Or the classic dagger in the back, turn them against each other with speech, make a Nobel go crazy with a frenzy spell or poison and have them attack the crew, all sorts of other creative ways to end a life...
The bonus of course, is to not get caught killing them. A way they could make that seem realistic is to have a member of the guild (preferably a mage) morph into various animals on board keeping an eye on you, since polymorphing is a thing in the Elder Scrolls (it hasn't been seen since Morrowind tho), rats, seagulls, maybe a cat... Could even have some funny dialogue after the quest is over, if you tried to kill them everytime you saw one of the animals.
      Also, is that Babette?

When I played this quest, I watched all of my prey like a hawk, as my sneak was low and it would have been easy to get caught if I screwed up. I also restricted myself to only being able to reload a save all the way in Cheydinhal and having to trek all the way back if I screwed up. At the time, as I didn't know how the AI worked, I thought if I was too close to the body when they died, even if I killed them without being seen the other residents would come to the conclusion it was me (which isn't true, as long as you kill them without being seen you can stand over the body and they won't think it's you).
At first, I spent a few in-game hours getting to know all of the guests. I listened to all of their dialogue and got a general idea of how everyone felt on each other. In particular, I noted Dovesi Dran's infatuation with Primo, and Neville's hatred of Nels (and vice versa). I wanted to exploit both of their unique relationships, so I convinced Dovesi Dran to go to go to Primo's room while he was in the living room. At the time, Neville and Matilde were sound asleep, and Nels was drinking in the corner. She was my first kill.
I left her body and decided to sleep in the bed that Neville was sleeping in. When I awoke, he was gone and Matilde was gone, with Dovesi of course dead. Now that everyone was on edge. I watched and waited, once again planning my next kill. I couldn't find any opportunities (honestly had plenty, but again I gave Oblivion AI too much credit) and I decided to just sleep. When I awoke, Neville's was asleep again, but I was stubborn and wanted to see how the Nels/Neville rivalry played out so I didn't kill him. Nels stayed in the same place, but interestingly Primo was all alone on the bottom floor...
I was rushed to kill him, and rushed to get out of there. It was probably the most tense moment of all the quest and made me truly love the feelings the quest gave me, even if it was all in my head. I rushed to Neville's room, who was still asleep, while Nels and Matilde talked, and I slept again. Of course, when I awoke, it didn't take long for me to kill Matilde secretly, and so I finally got what I wanted: the conclusion of the Nels/Neville rivalry. I hadn't talked to Nels much that quest, mostly focused on the others, so I decided to talk to him and raise his disposition. When I learned of why he hated Neville, it made it all the more satisfying and rewarded to convince him to kill Neville, even if I thought it would be one sided. I was pleasantly surprised when he took out Nevilles so fast, and of course I killed him, in which I tried to give him a grand fight to the death (unequipped all armor and used my weakest dagger) but I still took him out in one strike which I didn't intend. Best Elder Scrolls quest.
