Yeah, I always felt Knights of the Nine was underated. When you dive underwater near the imperial bridge to find the Ayleid ruins was one of the coolest parts.
The same makers of the knights of the nine that made it before it was a dlc made a expansion to it, highly recommend it. Also my solution to the bear was to run from it not let it beat the tar out of me, that always worked.

Oblivion is the best Elder Scrolls game for paladin archetypes. Knight of the Nine, the high-medieval aesthetics, unholy demons to slay(daedra abundant) and most importantly: the ability to cast spells without unequipping weapons/shields. When I'm in the mood for a classic medieval fantasy game, Oblivion never lets me down.
I played Oblivion for the first time last year ( my return to gaming after a decade). In short, it was pure enjoyment. I played the Knights of the Nine quest quite early on, and had no idea it was dlc. Shivering isles is for me the best thing Bethesda ever made.

Oblivion was never afraid to make you go WTF with a silly smile on your face. Skyrim was afraid to do that aside from the sanguine quest and the Sheogorath quest. I know that most people worship Shivering Isles as one of the greatest DLC's ever created, but I'm a much bigger fan of Knights of the Nine, it is easily my favorite DLC, and one of my favorite quest lines in all of Elder Scrolls.
I don’t get that. It’s fine, but shivering isles is better in pretty much every regard. I thought the story was underbaked and pretty generic, the initial pilgrimage quest was annoyingly tedious, and umaril was an incredibly underdeveloped villain and the final fight with him in turn had barely any emotional impact on me (as well as it being way too easy of a fight). I enjoyed questing for the relics, but that’s just because the dungeons for them were well made in level design. Other than that though, the DLC was just alright.
@@lhays117 Umaril is a pretty generic villain unless you read the song of Pelinal, but the main strength of the questline is how every other character has a great resolution to their story. If you speak to each of the spirits of the old knights of the nine, you can learn in detail about how they each failed their quest for the relics in their own way. To collect the relics you have to overcome their mistakes, and then at the end of the quest you can hear each of them reflect on where they went wrong knowing that their legacy has been put right. All of the new recruits you meet also have their own zany personalities, and even if some of them sadly die in the battle against Umaril, it's a sweet ending that you'll always leave the order with a full set of nine knights ready to uphold the legacy of their predecessors.
Personally i always like to do KOTN very late in my playthroughs at least after thieves guild and dark brotherhood because the pilgrimage erases all ur infamy and i like the redemption role play of a former assassin and thief turned true knight as well it allowing u to do those quests without losing the crusader artifacts, and because its my fave questline in the game its like my reward after a long playthrough
Same. My idea is that the massacre near the end of the Fighter's Guild quest line (you know which one) broke our hero spiritually and drove them down a dark path. Daedric quests, the Dark Brotherhood etc. So when they encounter the Knights of the Nine Quest, they find it to be their chance at redemption and become the hero they once were.
Knights of the nine has always been one of my favorite quest lines, the only problem I have with jumping straight into it with a new character is that if you commit a crime you have to go on another pilgrimage to regain use of the relics. I prefer to run through the dark brotherhood and thieves guild first just to avoid committing crimes once becoming the divine crusader, and for a bit of role play I can “retire” from a vile life for one of honor
That is what I do as well. I go through The Thieves guild first to make money and buy a house to store my stuff in the Waterfront district, then after The Ultimate Heist I kill an innocent person and go through The Dark Brotherhood (I'm fairly wealthy and have good sneak, acrobatics, and mercantile levels by this point so it's easy). Then I always repent my ways and do NotN so I can get all that awesome gear and access to chapel altars again. After that I generally do the mages/fighter guilds, and side quests. Then I do the main quest, and finally The Shivering Isles in which my character becomes a god. After that point I have well over 150-200 hours in a playthrough and I shelve the game for a 3-4 years before I do it all over again. I have 1,783.4 hours in Oblivion (according to Steam) lol but I played the game on Xbox 360 until I built a gaming PC in early 2008 so it's probably closer to 2,200-ish hours. Never played a game so much in my entire life, I still only have 386.2 hours on Skyrim for comparison. I mean, I like Skyrim but the lack of spellmaking and acrobatics just ruins it for me, same for the "gritty" aesthetic. Oblivion is almost comedic, silly, and has a colorful aesthetic. I really enjoy how it doesn't take itself too seriously. I was insanely hyped for a year until Skyrim came out, an unhealthy amount really but it just stripped the personality from the series. Played all the main games and I'd probably rate them... 1. Oblivion 2. Morrowind 3. Daggerfall 4. Skyrim 5. Arena Morrowind and Daggerfall are great in their own ways, I love the Morrowind but the combat is admittedly pretty awful. Daggerfall has better combat and the freedom to live anywhere, get loans, own a horse+cart is awesome but even though I've played it for a long time the dungeons are a bitch to navigate and you MUST get the mark/recall spells and immunity to disease or the game is a pain in the ass and just not fun. Morrowind isn't as brutal as Daggerfall with the quest timing and mechanics but the combat (in the early game) and walking/running animations suck. Levitation is great though but the spellmaking is way too unbalanced. In Oblivion you can make some badass spells but you can't just nuke an entire city with a 100-meter wide fireball that does 5000 damage to all targets like a DBZ character. Skyrim is broken in it's own way with the alchemy/enchanting loop but you are limited to melee/ranged weapons. So Skyrim has broken melee combat and Morrowind has broken magic, Oblivion is broken more for sneaky characters I guess with acrobatics and the ability to get 100% chameleon which effectively renders you invisible and capable of jumping houses (once you get 80+ acrobatics and the boots of Springheel Jak). So I guess there is no perfect TES game but Oblivion comes the closest to my definition of perfection at least.
One thing I believe Skyrim is sort of missing on is quests that support you role playing as an Honorable Knight. I played Oblivion years after Skyrim, and was pleasantly suprised about how prevalent the fantasy Knight trope is in play. The Blades, The Knights of the White Stallion, The Knights of the Thorn, and the absolute best of all, The Knights of the Nine. All these Knight factions that help you with immersing yourself as Knight. Not to mention all sorts of NPCs will acknowledge you as "Sir Knight". It's just awesome and the contemporary medieval design of Cyrodiil really brings it home for the role-playing. Don't get me wrong, the all powerful prophesied Dragon Slayer with ancient vikings in a cold, hard, warrior society trope in Skyrim really sings on it's own too, but something about Oblivion and it's more Excalibur influenced themes really pokes you in all the right ways.
Morrowind was my introduction into the Elder Scrolls but I had no idea really how to even approach the game and world. I loved it though. But Oblivion is an all time great game for me. Yes it is highly flawed in a lot of fundamental ways but the atmosphere and exploration is top notch... chef's kiss. Looking back on it now it still holds up as an incredible world to explore. The music also... top 5 all time game for me.
There's also a great feature tied to the armour. Being a holy crusader, you may use the set and the weapons only until you commit a crime - at which point, you lose the ability to wear the garments until you complete the Cyrodil-wide pilgrimage again. At least, this was the case back when I played it some years back
Honestly, i got Oblivion a few months back and I was kinda overwhelmed by all the content and DLC, but seeing this video made me want to explore this and other quests the game has to offer so thanks for making this video. Btw the video itself was pretty well made too imo. it did not feel like 40 minutes and was also pretty entertaining.

But one generations apart from him that he never met or really knew about. 24:46 I got the boots before the mace and just put on the relics as I got them. Making the mace quest much easier to do. Wearing the helm of the crusader gives you the lesser power “Serene Beauty” that lets you calm the bear letting you pass the quest without bring mauled. I got the goty a few years ago and have only played with all DLCs, these days I use a DLC delayer that adds requirements. But the first time I played. I didn’t know anything about the DLC I got caught up in doing other things, when I first came to Anvil a guard cautioned me against going in to the chapel due to how gruesome it was, so I didn’t. Instead I put it off for later, being fully immersed in the game I eventually forgot about the whole thing. The NPCs stopped talking about it. Then late one night I stopped by the chapel to quickly restore some of my stats. Having completely forgotten about the attack and wandering into that was quite an experience and it took me some moment to recall what happened there!
About future content: Maybe you can do a follow up to this vid, explaining the lore behind this DLC. OR, alternatively, make a compare-throught between KotN and SE highlighting the best aspects of each

Oh boy- another lengthy vidya covering Oblivion; hopefully there's more. I however always believed Knights of the Nine was best completed after the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, due to acquired infamy revoking your ability to use the Knights gear.
2006 I bought my first high end tv, Xbox 360, and oblivion and fight night 3. Good memories to warm my heart just as much as a gen 1 360 without the inter cooler.
Knights of the Nine was splendid and to this day my favorite dlc to play through in Oblivion. I absolutely love Templar and crusader themes, a holy quest of righteousness that ties into deep ES lore from the First Age and all its heroes; and the story was very well executed from the Prophet's warning to the pilgrimage that builds you up to a reward, finding the remains of a questing knight of an old order and then their old headquarters (Sir Amiel's ring activating the basement door was epic), facing the order of old, rebuilding the ranks, it's epic. And the full regalia of the divine crusader looks so very good, not too flashy or over-the-top fantastical, but just right. Especially the sword is so handsome. Shivering isles was fine, but not entirely to my tastes. If I want wonky aloofness and ailen terrain I'd just watch Charlie and the Chocolate factory. No, give me an epic knighly adventure anyday.

Skyrim was my first elder scrolls game I still play it often and is still my favorite (I think everyone's favorite ES game is usually their first) but have had oblivion for awhile. Finally decided to hop in and for whatever reason I was drawn to the knights of the nine questline basically right after I saved Kvatch and it got me really into oblivion. Makes me wish skyrim had a quest line this good lol
Pro tip: there is a mod that expands the story quite a bit. It lets you literally time travel. You are still in cyrodiil. But way in the past. It really feels like the world looked thousands of years before. Its really an immersive and surreal feeling. The mod really is very memorable. I played it once, and i still remember so many details. It really made an impact in terms of story, lore and adventure feeling.
That's really strange, I remember meeting Sir Roderic multiple times going from shrine to shrine. In fact, if I remember correctly (and I may not, it's been awhile) he asks if you want to accompany him, but I honestly don't remember if you really can or not. I don't think I ever did because obviously who wants to trudge along beside them when you don't have to. Anyway, I was just really surprised, I thought the game spawned him in when you got close to one.
I haven't even watched the video yet, I just wanted to share that this has been my favorite DLC of all time and in my opinion the best DLC there is. Thank you for this video that I'm about to enjoy and the channel I'm about to subscribe to. Dog Bless.
Its too bare bones to be anywhere near perfect. Its like five fetch quests after the tedious pilgrimage scavenger hunt for some armor. The end fight with Umaril is underwhelming and way too brief. A way to improve the dlc would be to expand every city chantry to have a mini quest line where you become the champion of the divines.
Definitely agree more depth of content could’ve been better! I think for what it is it does a great job. In my opinion the short length is a positive and honestly what I like about it most likely wasn’t the devs intention hahaha. I appreciate you watching!
To be fair, it would be boring as fuck doing a long ass questline just for the armor. Maybe the 4 hour part could of been getting the armor (make it more interesting though, duh) and then a second, longer part that takes you on some quests related to the Knights of the Nine

I always liked it. I've always been into knightly orders so it felt right at home for me. I love Shivering Isles too but out of every games expansion Bloodmoon is my favorite but Knights of the Nine is great. Also some of the coolest armor and the sword is awesome.
Glad this was recommended to me - this was very well-articulated and really showed how good this questline is. I would say the only thing that annoys me about the relics is that your infamy always has to be at 0 to wear them. On my first playthrough, I was playing sort of a neutral good spellsword so the Knights of the Nine was the last "good" questline I did before I started doing all the morally bad ones like the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. This gear was still super good for my character though, so I kept having to reset my infamy through the console after every quest just to keep wearing them. Other than this setback, I would say this is my favorite DLC and I way prefer the short and sweet experience of this one compared to the tedious ones in Skyrim... I keep thinking of getting all the black books in the Dragonborn DLC and getting lost for hours on end in the Forgotten Vale in the Dawnguard DLC... Hell nah I'm not doing those again LMAO
Interestingly enough, in this case you chose the one playstyle the DLC did not want/could serve: Stealth and Archery. Stealth less so, but archery in full swing a "No". Because haven't you asked yourself: "If there's no dual wielding... why am I given two one-handed melee weapons?" It has to do with Oblivions Melee Combat skills, which unlike Skyrim, are divided by Blunt and Blade skillsets. So a one-handed weapon isn't treated like any other but rather a greatsword and a longsword are treated more akin than a Mace and a Sword. Which is why Archery was a pretty decent choice in the showcase (so to both show "this is for a knight who intends melee combat." and to be indifferent per se to both Mace and Sword), whether intent or not. So the DLC does give the opportunity, not only to make the armor relics be the more prevalent armor type in a characters skills (heavy/light) depending on which skill is higher, but actually also serves towards both a Blunt and a Blades option. In my personal opinion an ingenious way of doing it. Which is why I dislike the Skyrim Divine Crusader Creation Club content so much; it only serves in two completely different looking sets to light and heavy armor but also only serves the one-handed tree. And if you want a two-handed crusader weapon, good luck spending more money just to buy Chrysamere. Not to mention you wouldnt be able to wear the shield with the two-hander.
Some things I would like to point out: -The prophet at the beginning isn't saying that he doesn't want help from someone with qualifications, he's saying that you think you are so high and mighty that YOU shouldn't need HIS help. Like "if you are so great, save the world yourself" and I actually like this aspect as it makes you admit as a player that you can't do everything by yourself and that sometimes you have to ask others for help -The attack on the chapel of Arkay actually makes it so you can't start the restoration master training quest as both the NPCs that die are some of the highest level skill trainers -The people in golden armor are not Ayleids, they are Aurorans which are a type of Daedra from Meridia's plane of Oblivion -Umaril is far from a god, he's pretty much just an ancient emperor that made a deal with a devil in order to come back from beyond the grave -The trial of Kynareth may not be very complicated or hard, but I actually got stuck on it for a while the first time I played because it essentially flips the game on it's head and reverses the normal objectives and I really respect that

17:26 not only great armor for oblivion, but at the time it came out there was big judgement on the game and the realistic depiction of a great helm and crusader armor served to solidify not only its representation of midevil accuracy but Bethesda’s desire to really serve its fanbase at the time. With the release of starfield it just goes to show they’re going have to put a lot more effort to dethrone their de facto magnum opus
I tend to wait to talk to the prophet after finishing the dark brotherhood questline just so the prophet can say that the gods will find me an interesting plaything.

I agree completely. It’s not as flashy as Shivering Isles but there’s more to it than a series of fetch quests. It rather reminds me of Ultima IV with its eight virtues; you need to find their associated runes, meditate at their associated shrines, pick up eight “matching” companions along the way, and so on. Can’t be the usual cynical amoral player character type or you won’t progress on your quest to become the Avatar///be worthy of the title Crusader and the Crusader’s relics.
I used the weynon priory as my house because I was too cheap to spend my hundreds of thousands on a real house. This DLC was a real surprise for me lol. My personal fav DLC of all time is the shivering isles, the setting just felt so breathtaking and immersive

Interesting that the dlc is overlooked now I remember when it first came out and it was pretty good but if I remember correctly Bethesda had announced that there was going to be smaller story dlc before the big expansion kinda like the Witcher 3 dlc. I’m not including the house dlcs or horse armour though. I do wonder if the reason the dlc is so short is because of Xbox live restrictions since it was one of the first large story dlcs I remember being launched since it was usually map packs and stuff like that on Xbox live at the time. I remember enjoying the dlc but also feeling kinda let down that it didn’t add much to the game. Replaying oblivion after a few years I wasn’t disappointed since it felt like it was part of the base game which can be a good or bad thing, it doesn’t feel out of place and is almost a extra guild. The story of the dlc is pretty good but it feels a little rushed imo. I can see why it’s overlooked compared to shivering isles but at least for me I’ve always thought of the dlc to oblivion kinda like a meal with knights of the nine being the starting course that preps you for the main course of shivering isles and the smaller house dlcs as desserts that you only get if really hungry. Being the starter it’s easy to get overlooked since it can’t overshadow the main course but it also can’t be bad or no one would want the main course either. It also doesn’t help it that it came out in that weird time when dlc was moving from buying discs with the expansion to digital downloads and people where still trying to figure out how big a dlc could be. Today some hot fix patches are bigger than the size of the knights of the nine expansion.
The Problem With knights of the nine is that you’re not allowed to do any crimes or ‘bad’ things (including daedric quests) after so unless you role play super hard or have already done your stuff then it ruins your game
Wrong. You get infamy not by doing crimes but for being stupid enough to get caught. The only time that you should get infamy is doing Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests. Daedric quests raise fame, assuming that you weren't caught doing any crimes.
I mean, you can’t really be a hero if you’re evil. It’s like Nukaworld, you can chose to be good and kill all the raiders but the dlc revolves around being a raider so there’s not much content.
I loved this questline. I wish the companions couldnt die tho. I also enjoyed having a whole retinue to adventure with me. Even the Adoring Fan, unless he is currently lost locked in a closet somewhere😅
I hated the initial pilgrimage to all the shrines, but beyond that it was a great storyline. But it is, was, and always will be overshadowed by the sheer perfection that was the shivering isles DLC which has yet to be beaten in my eyes by any other DLC for any game.
The one thing I don't like about KotN is the way the Anvil chapel clergy are dead from the start of the game. You never get to hear their dialogue if you have it installed

I liked the Christian moralistic ideal behind the humility in the intro to the knights quest with the prophet it was a nice change of pace from the polytheism
The questline is cool but it all revolves around the knight set and there's no way i can wear it long term because i just do too many crimes while playing normally so i just do the pilgrimage one time, do the questline and let that set in the basement
Because I watch a certain pancreanoworks I know a bit about his lore, His lore is very weird because he could be The reincarnation of a God he could be a protector of man from a God who is dead. He could also be all of those things and also someone from the future (because yes in elder scrolls time travel does exist) and he knew that the the dirty half-breed daedra elf would come back would come back. But he couldn't kill him because one Talos didn't exist and if he wasn't so injured from basically killing all of the elves himself he probably would have cut a hole in the dimensions and followed him to just end him permanently but you know he was tired, He's a very interesting character and also the biggest elf hater probably ever. Also elder scrolls lore is so weird.

shivering isles is actually so good, I think both that and knights of the nine were perfect examples of DLC. Best of all time.

To collect the relics you have to overcome their mistakes, and then at the end of the quest you can hear each of them reflect on where they went wrong knowing that their legacy has been put right. All of the new recruits you meet also have their own zany personalities, and even if some of them sadly die in the battle against Umaril, it's a sweet ending that you'll always leave the order with a full set of nine knights ready to uphold the legacy of their predecessors.
Personally i always like to do KOTN very late in my playthroughs at least after thieves guild and dark brotherhood because the pilgrimage erases all ur infamy and i like the redemption role play of a former assassin and thief turned true knight as well it allowing u to do those quests without losing the crusader artifacts, and because its my fave questline in the game its like my reward after a long playthrough

Same. My idea is that the massacre near the end of the Fighter's Guild quest line (you know which one) broke our hero spiritually and drove them down a dark path. Daedric quests, the Dark Brotherhood etc. So when they encounter the Knights of the Nine Quest, they find it to be their chance at redemption and become the hero they once were.

Knights of the nine has always been one of my favorite quest lines, the only problem I have with jumping straight into it with a new character is that if you commit a crime you have to go on another pilgrimage to regain use of the relics. I prefer to run through the dark brotherhood and thieves guild first just to avoid committing crimes once becoming the divine crusader, and for a bit of role play I can “retire” from a vile life for one of honor
That is what I do as well. I go through The Thieves guild first to make money and buy a house to store my stuff in the Waterfront district, then after The Ultimate Heist I kill an innocent person and go through The Dark Brotherhood (I'm fairly wealthy and have good sneak, acrobatics, and mercantile levels by this point so it's easy). Then I always repent my ways and do NotN so I can get all that awesome gear and access to chapel altars again.
After that I generally do the mages/fighter guilds, and side quests. Then I do the main quest, and finally The Shivering Isles in which my character becomes a god. After that point I have well over 150-200 hours in a playthrough and I shelve the game for a 3-4 years before I do it all over again.
I have 1,783.4 hours in Oblivion (according to Steam) lol but I played the game on Xbox 360 until I built a gaming PC in early 2008 so it's probably closer to 2,200-ish hours.
Never played a game so much in my entire life, I still only have 386.2 hours on Skyrim for comparison. I mean, I like Skyrim but the lack of spellmaking and acrobatics just ruins it for me, same for the "gritty" aesthetic. Oblivion is almost comedic, silly, and has a colorful aesthetic. I really enjoy how it doesn't take itself too seriously. I was insanely hyped for a year until Skyrim came out, an unhealthy amount really but it just stripped the personality from the series. Played all the main games and I'd probably rate them...

2. Morrowind
3. Daggerfall
4. Skyrim
5. Arena
Morrowind and Daggerfall are great in their own ways, I love the Morrowind but the combat is admittedly pretty awful. Daggerfall has better combat and the freedom to live anywhere, get loans, own a horse+cart is awesome but even though I've played it for a long time the dungeons are a bitch to navigate and you MUST get the mark/recall spells and immunity to disease or the game is a pain in the ass and just not fun. Morrowind isn't as brutal as Daggerfall with the quest timing and mechanics but the combat (in the early game) and walking/running animations suck.
Levitation is great though but the spellmaking is way too unbalanced.
In Oblivion you can make some badass spells but you can't just nuke an entire city with a 100-meter wide fireball that does 5000 damage to all targets like a DBZ character. Skyrim is broken in it's own way with the alchemy/enchanting loop but you are limited to melee/ranged weapons.
So Skyrim has broken melee combat and Morrowind has broken magic, Oblivion is broken more for sneaky characters I guess with acrobatics and the ability to get 100% chameleon which effectively renders you invisible and capable of jumping houses (once you get 80+ acrobatics and the boots of Springheel Jak).
So I guess there is no perfect TES game but Oblivion comes the closest to my definition of perfection at least.
Lmao, the opposite happened to me; my once kind-hearted, divine crusader turned into a murderer and a petty thief.
One thing I believe Skyrim is sort of missing on is quests that support you role playing as an Honorable Knight. I played Oblivion years after Skyrim, and was pleasantly suprised about how prevalent the fantasy Knight trope is in play. The Blades, The Knights of the White Stallion, The Knights of the Thorn, and the absolute best of all, The Knights of the Nine. All these Knight factions that help you with immersing yourself as Knight. Not to mention all sorts of NPCs will acknowledge you as "Sir Knight". It's just awesome and the contemporary medieval design of Cyrodiil really brings it home for the role-playing.
Don't get me wrong, the all powerful prophesied Dragon Slayer with ancient vikings in a cold, hard, warrior society trope in Skyrim really sings on it's own too, but something about Oblivion and it's more Excalibur influenced themes really pokes you in all the right ways.

Morrowind was my introduction into the Elder Scrolls but I had no idea really how to even approach the game and world. I loved it though. But Oblivion is an all time great game for me. Yes it is highly flawed in a lot of fundamental ways but the atmosphere and exploration is top notch... chef's kiss. Looking back on it now it still holds up as an incredible world to explore. The music also... top 5 all time game for me.

The way you find out about quests in Oblivion is wonderful. Hearing a rumor about the priest in Anvil is such a nice "what was that?" moment
There's also a great feature tied to the armour. Being a holy crusader, you may use the set and the weapons only until you commit a crime - at which point, you lose the ability to wear the garments until you complete the Cyrodil-wide pilgrimage again. At least, this was the case back when I played it some years back
Honestly, i got Oblivion a few months back and I was kinda overwhelmed by all the content and DLC, but seeing this video made me want to explore this and other quests the game has to offer so thanks for making this video. Btw the video itself was pretty well made too imo. it did not feel like 40 minutes and was also pretty entertaining.

Wearing the helm of the crusader gives you the lesser power “Serene Beauty” that lets you calm the bear letting you pass the quest without bring mauled.
I got the goty a few years ago and have only played with all DLCs, these days I use a DLC delayer that adds requirements.
But the first time I played. I didn’t know anything about the DLC I got caught up in doing other things, when I first came to Anvil a guard cautioned me against going in to the chapel due to how gruesome it was, so I didn’t.
Instead I put it off for later, being fully immersed in the game I eventually forgot about the whole thing. The NPCs stopped talking about it.
Then late one night I stopped by the chapel to quickly restore some of my stats.
Having completely forgotten about the attack and wandering into that was quite an experience and it took me some moment to recall what happened there!

Oh boy- another lengthy vidya covering Oblivion; hopefully there's more. I however always believed Knights of the Nine was best completed after the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, due to acquired infamy revoking your ability to use the Knights gear.

Knights of the Nine was splendid and to this day my favorite dlc to play through in Oblivion. I absolutely love Templar and crusader themes, a holy quest of righteousness that ties into deep ES lore from the First Age and all its heroes; and the story was very well executed from the Prophet's warning to the pilgrimage that builds you up to a reward, finding the remains of a questing knight of an old order and then their old headquarters (Sir Amiel's ring activating the basement door was epic), facing the order of old, rebuilding the ranks, it's epic. And the full regalia of the divine crusader looks so very good, not too flashy or over-the-top fantastical, but just right. Especially the sword is so handsome. Shivering isles was fine, but not entirely to my tastes. If I want wonky aloofness and ailen terrain I'd just watch Charlie and the Chocolate factory. No, give me an epic knighly adventure anyday.
I skipped over Knights of the Nine back in the day. Thanks for this retrospective. You may have convinced me to go back and give it a go.

Skyrim was my first elder scrolls game I still play it often and is still my favorite (I think everyone's favorite ES game is usually their first) but have had oblivion for awhile. Finally decided to hop in and for whatever reason I was drawn to the knights of the nine questline basically right after I saved Kvatch and it got me really into oblivion. Makes me wish skyrim had a quest line this good lol

Pro tip: there is a mod that expands the story quite a bit. It lets you literally time travel. You are still in cyrodiil. But way in the past. It really feels like the world looked thousands of years before.
Its really an immersive and surreal feeling.
The mod really is very memorable. I played it once, and i still remember so many details. It really made an impact in terms of story, lore and adventure feeling.

That's really strange, I remember meeting Sir Roderic multiple times going from shrine to shrine. In fact, if I remember correctly (and I may not, it's been awhile) he asks if you want to accompany him, but I honestly don't remember if you really can or not. I don't think I ever did because obviously who wants to trudge along beside them when you don't have to. Anyway, I was just really surprised, I thought the game spawned him in when you got close to one.

Its too bare bones to be anywhere near perfect. Its like five fetch quests after the tedious pilgrimage scavenger hunt for some armor. The end fight with Umaril is underwhelming and way too brief. A way to improve the dlc would be to expand every city chantry to have a mini quest line where you become the champion of the divines.
Definitely agree more depth of content could’ve been better! I think for what it is it does a great job. In my opinion the short length is a positive and honestly what I like about it most likely wasn’t the devs intention hahaha. I appreciate you watching!
To be fair, it would be boring as fuck doing a long ass questline just for the armor. Maybe the 4 hour part could of been getting the armor (make it more interesting though, duh) and then a second, longer part that takes you on some quests related to the Knights of the Nine

I always liked it. I've always been into knightly orders so it felt right at home for me. I love Shivering Isles too but out of every games expansion Bloodmoon is my favorite but Knights of the Nine is great. Also some of the coolest armor and the sword is awesome.
Glad this was recommended to me - this was very well-articulated and really showed how good this questline is.
I would say the only thing that annoys me about the relics is that your infamy always has to be at 0 to wear them. On my first playthrough, I was playing sort of a neutral good spellsword so the Knights of the Nine was the last "good" questline I did before I started doing all the morally bad ones like the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. This gear was still super good for my character though, so I kept having to reset my infamy through the console after every quest just to keep wearing them.
Other than this setback, I would say this is my favorite DLC and I way prefer the short and sweet experience of this one compared to the tedious ones in Skyrim... I keep thinking of getting all the black books in the Dragonborn DLC and getting lost for hours on end in the Forgotten Vale in the Dawnguard DLC... Hell nah I'm not doing those again LMAO

Really good video! Oblivion is one of my favorites, and your perspective on NotN was very interesting.
Interestingly enough, in this case you chose the one playstyle the DLC did not want/could serve:
Stealth and Archery.
Stealth less so, but archery in full swing a "No".
Because haven't you asked yourself: "If there's no dual wielding... why am I given two one-handed melee weapons?"
It has to do with Oblivions Melee Combat skills, which unlike Skyrim, are divided by Blunt and Blade skillsets.
So a one-handed weapon isn't treated like any other but rather a greatsword and a longsword are treated more akin than a Mace and a Sword.
Which is why Archery was a pretty decent choice in the showcase (so to both show "this is for a knight who intends melee combat." and to be indifferent per se to both Mace and Sword), whether intent or not.
So the DLC does give the opportunity, not only to make the armor relics be the more prevalent armor type in a characters skills (heavy/light) depending on which skill is higher, but actually also serves towards both a Blunt and a Blades option.
In my personal opinion an ingenious way of doing it. Which is why I dislike the Skyrim Divine Crusader Creation Club content so much; it only serves in two completely different looking sets to light and heavy armor but also only serves the one-handed tree.
And if you want a two-handed crusader weapon, good luck spending more money just to buy Chrysamere. Not to mention you wouldnt be able to wear the shield with the two-hander.
I didn’t even know Knights of the Nine was a DLC while doing it until later on when I googled something about it. Enjoyed it thoroughly
Some things I would like to point out:
-The prophet at the beginning isn't saying that he doesn't want help from someone with qualifications, he's saying that you think you are so high and mighty that YOU shouldn't need HIS help. Like "if you are so great, save the world yourself" and I actually like this aspect as it makes you admit as a player that you can't do everything by yourself and that sometimes you have to ask others for help
-The attack on the chapel of Arkay actually makes it so you can't start the restoration master training quest as both the NPCs that die are some of the highest level skill trainers
-The people in golden armor are not Ayleids, they are Aurorans which are a type of Daedra from Meridia's plane of Oblivion
-Umaril is far from a god, he's pretty much just an ancient emperor that made a deal with a devil in order to come back from beyond the grave
-The trial of Kynareth may not be very complicated or hard, but I actually got stuck on it for a while the first time I played because it essentially flips the game on it's head and reverses the normal objectives and I really respect that

17:26 not only great armor for oblivion, but at the time it came out there was big judgement on the game and the realistic depiction of a great helm and crusader armor served to solidify not only its representation of midevil accuracy but Bethesda’s desire to really serve its fanbase at the time.
With the release of starfield it just goes to show they’re going have to put a lot more effort to dethrone their de facto magnum opus

I agree completely. It’s not as flashy as Shivering Isles but there’s more to it than a series of fetch quests. It rather reminds me of Ultima IV with its eight virtues; you need to find their associated runes, meditate at their associated shrines, pick up eight “matching” companions along the way, and so on. Can’t be the usual cynical amoral player character type or you won’t progress on your quest to become the Avatar///be worthy of the title Crusader and the Crusader’s relics.

I used the weynon priory as my house because I was too cheap to spend my hundreds of thousands on a real house. This DLC was a real surprise for me lol. My personal fav DLC of all time is the shivering isles, the setting just felt so breathtaking and immersive

Interesting that the dlc is overlooked now I remember when it first came out and it was pretty good but if I remember correctly Bethesda had announced that there was going to be smaller story dlc before the big expansion kinda like the Witcher 3 dlc. I’m not including the house dlcs or horse armour though. I do wonder if the reason the dlc is so short is because of Xbox live restrictions since it was one of the first large story dlcs I remember being launched since it was usually map packs and stuff like that on Xbox live at the time. I remember enjoying the dlc but also feeling kinda let down that it didn’t add much to the game. Replaying oblivion after a few years I wasn’t disappointed since it felt like it was part of the base game which can be a good or bad thing, it doesn’t feel out of place and is almost a extra guild. The story of the dlc is pretty good but it feels a little rushed imo. I can see why it’s overlooked compared to shivering isles but at least for me I’ve always thought of the dlc to oblivion kinda like a meal with knights of the nine being the starting course that preps you for the main course of shivering isles and the smaller house dlcs as desserts that you only get if really hungry. Being the starter it’s easy to get overlooked since it can’t overshadow the main course but it also can’t be bad or no one would want the main course either. It also doesn’t help it that it came out in that weird time when dlc was moving from buying discs with the expansion to digital downloads and people where still trying to figure out how big a dlc could be. Today some hot fix patches are bigger than the size of the knights of the nine expansion.
Another guild or a starting course is the perfect way to describe it and I love that about it but on release probably wouldn’t felt different.

I’m playing Morrowind right now, and that Drain Fatigue curse would have made this quest line extremely difficult.
The Problem With knights of the nine is that you’re not allowed to do any crimes or ‘bad’ things (including daedric quests) after so unless you role play super hard or have already done your stuff then it ruins your game
Wrong. You get infamy not by doing crimes but for being stupid enough to get caught. The only time that you should get infamy is doing Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests. Daedric quests raise fame, assuming that you weren't caught doing any crimes.

I hated the initial pilgrimage to all the shrines, but beyond that it was a great storyline. But it is, was, and always will be overshadowed by the sheer perfection that was the shivering isles DLC which has yet to be beaten in my eyes by any other DLC for any game.

I loved Oblivion when it came out, but after playing Skyrim enjoying Oblivion is difficult.
The questline is cool but it all revolves around the knight set and there's no way i can wear it long term because i just do too many crimes while playing normally so i just do the pilgrimage one time, do the questline and let that set in the basement

Because I watch a certain pancreanoworks I know a bit about his lore,
His lore is very weird because he could be The reincarnation of a God he could be a protector of man from a God who is dead. He could also be all of those things and also someone from the future (because yes in elder scrolls time travel does exist) and he knew that the the dirty half-breed daedra elf would come back would come back. But he couldn't kill him because one Talos didn't exist and if he wasn't so injured from basically killing all of the elves himself he probably would have cut a hole in the dimensions and followed him to just end him permanently but you know he was tired,
He's a very interesting character and also the biggest elf hater probably ever. Also elder scrolls lore is so weird.
