Hello. I am new to collage quilting. I have been sewing since 7th grade, when moved to U.S I learned about quilts, latter in age 30 I learned about collage quilting, what a beautiful idea. Your videos are amazing, step by step instruction, no rushing with words, no skipping steps like others do. You are amazing! ❤.. Thank you so much! Can't wait to make wall art! 😊
Thank you for talking about whisper lite. I always have to do what I’m not supposed to do and I really want to make a collage quilt that will actually be used as a quilt. I want to make it out of hand dyed linen fabric scraps (as you know linen is a nightmare to work with but the fusing should help!) but I’d like to keep everything as soft as possible. I want the quilt to look worn and loved (I swoon when I see those old fashioned quilts with all the ripples and worn edges!) Thank you for taking the time to make this video and help those of us who do not have a quilting group near by to learn techniques from. You tube is a life saver!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your work. Your instruction is much better than someone who tried to help me today. You are a great instructor and I loved seeing your work. from Queensland Australia. I don't think I should look at others because I need to do things in a simple way. Years ago - maybe over 50, I did a heart with dried flowers and sent it to my husband. He is no longer alive but I still have that heart. Your heart is a lovely way to say 'I love you' to someone.
Hi Barbara, I’m so very sorry that you lost your husband but how special that you have the lovely heart you gifted him ❤️ thank you so much for sharing and I’m so happy you found my tutorial helpful. Stitch joyfully 😀🧵
Not only a creative person but a very good instructor as well! Beautiful work, great color choices, very nice! Thank you for sharing your very understandable expertise! Happy crafting!
I saw this done using freezer paper to lay-out pieces so when you fuse them together you can just peel them off the foundation after you iron them down. Saves that whole cutting out the foundation step
Hi Linda, that is another option for smaller collages, though it is a bit slippery to work on and doesn’t come in 42” width. But thanks for sharing your tip. 😀
OhOHOh! Your Work is just beautiful. And I love your sweet laughter! Our Family Heritage Handiworks is something I’d like to preserve for future Nieces & Nephews. Your Work has helped me in making considerations for various projects to hand down. It seemed a shame to me that my Mother’s, Grandmother’s & favourite Auntie’s Handiworks might fall to the wayside, if left in their current, well-cared for states. Dishcloths featuring cotton and silken DMC threads, yarns and foundational fabrications like quilt backings & Dutch Doll show pieces. My Auntie left to Mom & me a few prized like her crocheted queen sized bedspread done in a white cotton threading. Gram embroidered for my Hope chest a set of luxurious, thick, softest cotton pillowcases & dishcloths. I use Grams cases on my bed, with sheer delight! For we shared her bed when I was little, they’re quite precious to me. Auntie Shirley too stitched embroidery a set of white, cotton, kitchen towels as did Mom. So, the dish towels I feel might become lost over time, making Art pieces for all to enjoy seems the best possible fit! Thank You SO very much for Sharing Your Talents & Expertise! I am a new subscriber Today. And I appreciate so, Your Offerings! Blessings abound! 🤍💨
Thank you for sharing your family story of stitchery. You obviously come from a talented family and it’s so wonderful to have those heirlooms. The ones that get used will eventually wear out but for me I’d rather they be used and thought of rather than languishing in a dark cupboard. Granted, that also depends on the piece. We also have family stitchery and it is precious 😍 blessings to you and yours 🤗
I have an older cousin who just lost everything passed down to her when her house burned down, Have been trying to think of a way to replace some of it for her. (One of them was a Lone Star quilt) Since reading your comment I think I will try to take some of her Mother's original art pieces and stitch them for her on this foundation. (I have not heard about Hope Chests since I was a teenager heading out on my own and receiving mine.) Thank you, your comment stirred up inspiration and LONG forgotten memories. LOL
Hi Linda. I am brand new to collage quilting. One of the quilters I watch was doing a Toni Whitney pattern and I had never heard of this process. Found your video and had so much fun watching it that I am ready to start trying this for gifts. What a wonderful wall hanger this will make for the loved ones in my life. I sat and giggled watching some of the struggles and the duhs (I say that to myself all the time also). Felt like I was sitting with my best friend to learn something new. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful tutorial. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you so much for taking the time to teach this method. I now feel confident to move forward with my first collage project! This method seems to save some steps verses other methods I've seen, as well as ending up with a lighter weight project. Thanks again!

But the footpedal was bigger than me lol very ornate very large and very metal lol. It was her mothers possibly around 1870? I’m now 51 years old. Double wedding ring and the basket Are the two I would like to do.I’m in love with the style of your sewing machine dying to know what year it is from or if you have a model number!
Hi Susan, I’m not sure of the exact year but it’s from the 1950’s and it is a featherweight model. They are quite popular and you can usually find them on eBay or through private sellers. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when I found mine. It’s wonderful that you have your grandmothers precious quilts. 😍
Thank you for this video. I have been wanting to try my hand at raw edge appliqué. I am very excited about the product Whisperlite which will make it so easy to do. I also do wool appliqué. I don’t think parchment paper is the same as freezer paper? Freezer paper by Reynolds is probably what you’re referring to. Yes that works

Thank you Carrie 😀. So happy you’re going to give collage quilting a try. It is a fun technique and yes, the heart is my design and will be available in the near future as a pattern.
Thank you 🙏🏾 for sharing. I’m new to your channel I just began doing RUclips videos also. I’m hand stitching a Cathedral Window quilt I hope to see more videos from you. Happy Thanksgiving and God bless you and your family
Oh yes, Cathedral Window is a wonderful timeless technique, hope you are enjoying it. Thanks so much and Blessings to you and yours and Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Only 3 videos since 2011? Would love to see more!
Hi, yes I know, I’m working on more tips and tutorials to come soon, but I also double as full time caretaker for my parents so let’s just say I lead a blessed but interrupted life. If you subscribe to my channel you’ll get notified when there are new videos. Thanks so much 😀
This is awesome! Where do you get patterns to make collages out of?
Hi Kim if you search collage quilt patterns you’ll find them. Laura Heine has a large selection of very nice ones.
@@thistledownquilts Thank you very much.
I love this video! So many possibilities! But where can I purchase the webbing that you use?
Thank you 😀 I’m so happy that you found inspiration from my video. You can order the Whisperlite foundation on my website at www.Thistledownquilts.com it is sold by the yard. More quilt tutorials are coming soon.
I enjoyed your video. I am also curious to know what the quilt design is on the wall next to the collage.
Thank you. The quilt is a pattern of mine for a Christmas bed runner called Peppermint Strings. It is on my website www.thistledownquilts.com
Lovely.
What did you use as the foundation?
Thank you 😀 The collage foundation used is Whisperlite foundation and is available by the yard on my website at

Loved this
Thank you so much this was excellent!!!
Thanks so much 🤗
When did you trim off the excess whisperlite?
Hi Lyn, I trim off the Whisperlite before fusing it to the background fabric. Then I stitch around the edge and also some areas within the collage.
Hello Lyn
Love your blouse
😀Thanks, it’s comfy too.
I tried ordering your "Whisperlight" foundation interfacing; sadly you don't ship to Ontario, Canada! Does anyone happen to know where might I be able to order this in Canada?
Hi, I’m so sorry! For some reason my shipping settings to Canada were off. 😣 they’re back on now and you should be able to place your order. Thank you for saying something 😄
That is a shame....I had to place my order elsewhere today - now that I know you ship to Canada....I will put my next order through you! Thanks again!
Thank you, and so sorry for the mix up.
Hello my friend
Very nice I have several collage patterns you have inspired me to give it a try. 💖
Fabulous! There are so many great collage patterns and the Whisperlite foundation is perfect for them. Thank you. 😀
P.S. what is the name of that gorgeous fabric on the silicone pad ?
That lovely fabric is Kaffe Fassett’s - Rose and hydrangea hot
Very nice tutorial, very informative, Thank You..
Thank you Adela - so happy you enjoyed it. 😀
I’ve done that type of thing with Vlissfix, excuse spelling, straight onto appliqué mat then onto background fabric and free motion stitch it.
I don’t see the whisperlite on your site😢
Hi Lisa, are you n the correct site? The Whisperlite is there and you order by the yard.
