Hi. I signed up for a collage quilt class for the end of this month. I've never made one before. The homework assignment for before the class was to fuse all your background and other fabrics. Cut out flowers. Fuse some 10 inch squares. It was all a mystery to me. Thanks to this video,😍 I actually think I understand and can be ready for my class. I know it was 4 years ago, but I want you to know how much I appreciate that you made this video! Thank you.
Thank you for your help. I just bought my 1st Laura Heine Pattern. I'm excited and intimidated at the same time. You shared a lot that other instructors didn't.
This is the most freeing video for this technique. You have a gift to teach
clearest tutorial on the assembling of a collage quilt yet. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’m going to do this at my local quilt shop. Found you today, this was GREAT!!!
Great tutorial! I've admired her patterns for a long time but they looked intimidating. You did a great job explaining the process. Thank you
I'm new to quilting and just love the look of these quilts. Can't wait to try it out! Thankyou!
Thank you so very much! The best tutorial on this I’ve seen. Your straightforward, you started at the beginning in case there are some newbies yet quickly move on to the next step.
I’m finally going to create my Laura Heine Quilt, and I suspect I’ll make more now that I no longer fear the process.
Have you done a tutorial on New York beauty or other star quilt designs?
This is the best tutorial on this method by far!!! Thanks so much for all the details❤
Thank you for making this teaching video. Seeing the process really helps me understand the Heine collage posts I’ve read..
I love her patterns and got several only to read directions somewhat and put up. You did a terrific job explaining the process. Made everything easy. Now I am ready to go collage. Thank you
I took a collage class this week at my local quilt store and loved it. I discovered your tutorial today and it’s very helpful. Thanks.
So very helpful...I bought about three patterns, read directions but still had lots of questions so this video is awesome...thank you very much!
Thank You so much. I took a class and got discouraged. Your video makes so much sense tome. You are a very good teacher.
I love that you are SO relaxed, which makes it seem like the project is really do-able! I've had a kit for ages, but was intimidated. Think I will start today! Thanks!!
Beth Templet Thank you!! I’m glad you liked the video 😊 Have fun making yours!
I guess Im kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released movies online?
@Rafael Grady I use FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
@Rafael Grady lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
Great work...you are a terrific teacher and it's fascinating to watch and learn. Youve probably helped push the sales of these kits skywards.Hopefully the lady who designed the pattern will thank you for giving her free marketing !Keep doing these tutorial s you are modern and refreshing...and inspiring .thanks Tricia in the UK
Thank you. I appreciate your remarks
This is amazing. I just put the pattern in my Amazon cart, and this came up! Wonderfully clear instructions
You need to know you made this possible for me to begin this technique. I will use the steam 2 seam 2 for the turtle! Thanks so much for a perfect video tutorial! Aloha 🙏🏻🌸🌈🌴
I love the way you tossed the steam-a-seam to the side...it made me laugh! Great tutorial!
@Tracey Towner SAME! 😂😂
Oh thank you! I am a brand new quilter and saw some of the quilts in my local store (shout out to Modern Quilting, Phoenix) and thought it looked so intimidating. You made it look so easy and fun. Please do more tutorials, on anything really! It's all new to me!
I’m jealous! I live in Ohio and visited Modern Quilting on vacation. What a nice shop to have for your local store!
@@de-deheeter2598 Yes! I do feel very lucky.
This video just popped up. I’m in Phoenix so I need to check out that shop.
Thank You! I have never appliqued before & couldn't find out how you cut the pieces out. The 3 or 4 attempts to figure it out - how to trace the pieces out - seemed to be "assumed" that we've all done it. I won't be ready for my class today, but at least I now know how to do it! THANK YOU again!
Appliqué uses many different techniques. And appliqué you sew on the pieces after. This is collage quilting so the quilting after the pieces are applied are going to be different.
This video is fantastic! I have been waiting for someone to do a start to finish tutorial of one of these collage quilts! I can’t wait to start mine now. Great tips. Thank you so much!!
Thank You!! Great work you are a wonderful teacher. Thank You again Looking forward to more of your videos.🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Find me on FB and Instagram for more!
I was so confused about how to do the background fabric. BUT YOU MADE IT SOUND SO EASY! Glad that I found this tutorial. Now, I shall not be afraid to continue. THANKS SO MUCH!
4/25/2021 I am making this design now. I decided to piece the background using a jelly roll. I am using hand sewn appliqués to cover the machine, to create the floral "quilt", and to add touches of color throughout the design. I added several dimensions of ruffled fabric to create the sewing machine hand wheel. My quilt is coming out beautifully! I decided to enlarge the design with bands of color, batting, and a cotton backer fabric to make this into a twin sized quilt. I love it! Thank you LAURA HEINE!! What a great design! 🌼
Ohhhh i wish i could see this quilt
Thanks for such a descriptive tutorial. My guild is having a collage class and I thought to watch a tutorial on the subject. Your tutorial is great.
I purchased this pattern recently. It wasn't available as a kit, but I'm certain I will have fun finding the perfect materials. I definitely must find the “word” fabric & some of the others that make it just “sew” perfect. I'm not intimated since watching your tutorial. Thank you for that encouragement! (P.S. I have a Yellow Nape Amazon, “Harry” - since he was a baby. I hand-fed him & taught him how to crack seed, etc. He loves everything: my cats, dogs, a rescued squirrel (from less than 4 wks old), and a Marmoset Monkey (again, from about 4 wks old). He sings, dances, carries on conversations, hugs & kisses, & so much more. He is so sweet & loving & adds so much love, entertainment, & fun to my home. I see you have a fondness for animals, too. They're wonderful!) Thank you, again🤗
We love our animals.
Thank you! I had so much fun watching this . . . my favorite quote "Iron the crap out of it!". I will be working on my first collage quilt soon and this has been a tremendous help!
same here "Iron the crap out of it!"
Have loads of these patterns need to DO NOW.... WAS A LIL DAUNTING TILL I WATCHED U
Thank you. I started my collage then stopped when it came to tracing , cutting and placing the fabrics. Now I feel prepared to complete my collage.
Thank you for this helpful video. I learned a lot and now feel like "hey, I think I can make one of these now!"
You do a very nice job on explaining the process
You have the best collage tutorial. Thanks much.
Your instructions were so good! Thank you again!!!
After watching your video I now feel like I can start my collage. Thank you for doing this.
Karen Fricke I’m so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for commenting! Find me on FB if you haven’t already 😊
Thank you, thank you for this detailed tutorial. Ready to try my first one....
Amazing tutorial and fabulous video thanks for sharing your beautiful ideas
Thank you so much for showing the exact process of doing this technique!! I missed the class and I have a pattern and I think everything I need to make it but I really wasn’t sure how to begin. Thanks 😊
Best tutorial online!! Thank you, you are really sweet
You are so welcome!
Oh my gosh, thank you! I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out the tracing thing. 🥰
im starting the Sunflowers collage. Watching here for familiarization thank you!
Love seeing some of Jessica Vandenburg's GYPSY line of fabric flowers.
Yes it was helpful to as I haven’t done a collage yet but have the gear to do them. Really looking forward to getting ready, the more videos I watch the more I learn so ya it’s was interesting thank you.
Your video is so helpful. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for the tutorial! I am going to try it!
Your very thoughtful instructor
Thank you for this video! Although the quilt kits for the Featherweight pattern are no longer available I decided to buy the pattern and I’m going to give it a try! Now to just hunt through the scraps to find the pieces!
thank you so much for sharing!!!! Can't wait to try it
Thanks for the tutorial. It was very informative.
Beautiful BRILLIANT thanks for showing how to make this quilt .i have a similar pattern but it's for a sewing machine cover x
Thanks for this great tutorial!
Thanks for this video :)
Great video! I read through the Laura Heine's Protea collage pattern instructions multiple times and couldn't understand the underlay technique for cutting and fusing the fabrics. Thanks to your demonstration, I get it! Thank you!
Great tutorial. Thank you❤️
Just starting to look at collage quilting as one of my new projects.. great (tutorial) intro to this journey.. LOL
Thank you for so kindly helping us to make a fabric collage. There is one more thing I would be very grateful for: with traditional appliqué quilts, the motif is sewn on with the appliqué foot. Sometimes the motif is quilted over, sometimes not.Could you please show us in more detail how you finish your collage artwork, how you quilt so that everything sticks together?
I’m a longarm quilting but you can quilt these on a regular sewing machine. You can even get non-stick needles for a regular sewing machine. I sew horizontal lines with random spacing between 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Then you can also do diagonal lines with random spacing. The steam a seam will cause thread breakage while sewing so be patient
❤❤❤ thank you so much I love your tenique.
Love this!! ❤thank you!!
I believe as long as she is not claiming the works as her own ideas and patterns, she is not breaking any laws. She clearly refers everyone to Laura’s site to purchase her patterns and kits. One thing I would add, that viewers also be referred to Laura’s book. Lots of questions will be answered in her book such as the question whether or not you can use muslin and why Pattern Ease is better, and she explains why Steam a Seam 2 works best. I personally found that reading the book first and then watching the video really pulled everything together. But of course once you get started, you too will find a technique that works best for you.
I just found your videos and I love this pattern. I live in Australia and would love to now where to buy this pattern. Thank you for your video
I love this video and how relaxed you are about the project. It no longer looks so intimidating to me! Can one use parchment paper for the pressing 'cloth' when ironing the fabric to the Steam a Seam 2?
So so helpful. Thank you
Great video! Thank you, I have subscribed!
Love your tutorial💖
Watching again 😀
great video!!! thank you!!!
Great tutorial...thanks!
Great tutorial! New subscriber 😎😎
First time I see a Maytag iron!
Lol. Is it old?
❤BEAUTIFUL!❤
Que lindo seu trabalho! Muito inspirador!😍🤗👏👏👏
Very helpful!
Hermoso trabajo!!! 😍👍
Thanks! So helpful!
Great tutorial! I have the Seed Pods pattern and was confused about some of this. Now ready to get going on it. Also, would you consider wearing a microphone to record your tutorials? The echo and far-away sound were hard for my wonky ears to hear. I used closed captioning to follow but would rather watch you than read. Thanks for considering, and thanks again for the tutorial.
Hi Sarah!
What is the foundation piece of fabric called at the stores
This is new to me. My question is, what happens to the paper that is under the fabric? Is it light cloth that stays in the quilt? Thank you! Such beautiful quilts.
you remove the paper and stick the fabric to the drawing
The paper on the steam a seam should be removed in order to stick the fabric to your design. The “fabric ease” that I traced the design onto, is a light clothe and that will be part of the quilt. It stays forever
This is a great video. Thank you for making it. I do have a question, do you buy 1.5 or 2.5" rolls for your fabric pieces?
thank you! I just bought a couple of kits to try and the written instructions left me nowhere! this video was perfect introduction.
Very helpful! Thx!
Thank you for your tutorials. I'm getting ready to try my first collage. I really like how you aren't stacking fabric up. It makes it easier to sew. I love the background. I want to make this one for my sister, who has a Featherweight. Did you change colors when quilting? Thank you.
I just used white to quilt it
@@sassyquilting8325 Thank you.
One thing I am missing in the videos.....it may be dumb question, but what do you have underneath as a protector for when all the pieces are laid out and you are ready to iron them in permanent place before sewing? I am going to purchased one of the Laura Heine Collages and get started!
You don’t need anything underneath it. There’s already fabric underneath. You just iron away
So do you leave the pattern ease in place. In essences it’s another layer in the quilting?
Hello, thanks for the tips on how to make the quilt. My question is do you have to sew each piece down around edges after sticking to your foundation piece? If not, when I quilt it, will that be enough to hold downs the pieces so the edges won't come up?
You don’t see each piece down. When you quilt it, do a tight stitch design and it should be fine
@@sassyquilting8325 Thank you so much. I just ordered my first pattern today.
I would love to see the back . Did you use batting? did you add a backing fabric. I love it
Can you use muslin instead of pattern ease? Great tutorial! I’ve had one of her kits for quit a while but really didn’t understand the directions
I’m not sure. I would think that would be fine tho
Can you Please do the Teeny Tiny Dress Collage ? I would love to see how to make that collage. I just subscribed to your channel and love the way you explain everything.
Great video thank you ! I’m just wondering if you had any problem with your needle getting a lot of glue on it from the steam a seam ?
Where can I get the kit
Thank you for this tutorial. If I understand correctly, once you've got all the fabric pieces ironed down, do you have to applique them or do you then put your quilt sandwich together and just quilt it however you'd like?
You quilt sandwich.
Great helps!
What a great video, thank you:) I had two questions. Do you butt the designs exactly up to each other or overlap them slightly? And then where did you purchase the "Singer" fabric pieces for the sewing machine? Thanks in advance & keep the awesome videos coming. I really enjoy them and they are very good!
It’s better to butt the fabric so you’re not layering too much. But if you’re only layering a 2-4 layers, than you can definitely layer it. The more layers, the harder for the longarm quilter to sew. So keep as few layers as possible but you will be layering no meter what. Hope that makes sense.
And the singer fabric I believe I got at my local quilt shop in corona, ca. But they don’t have it anymore. I would try Etsy.
Where did you get your fabric kit from? I haven't been able to find these beautiful bright colors.
Fiberworks-Heine.com
The pieces being applied (glued) on the Pattern Ease, when the assembly is finished, do you sew it on a large piece of fabric (serving as a background)?
Very nice
When you put the accents on the sewing machine, do you put them over the black or do you have to cut out the black there so it's not bulky?
Where did u get singer sign for machine? Beautiful!
It’s from singer fabric but I don’t think it’s available anymore. I don’t remember where I got it. It was a line of fabric with singer machines and singer logos
I've got all my materials. I am doing the Laura Heine Tiny Turtle collage. Where did you get your applique pressing sheet? I purchased the Steam a Seam 2 and it comes with one but it's a bit more rigid.
I think I bought my pressing mat from fiberworks-Heine.com
Fantastic video. Thank you. Do you use a specific pen to trace your pattern or does anything work? Will you be doing more videos?
You can use a #2 pencil to trace. Anything works tho. I will be doing more videos.
What kind of videos would you like to see?
I would like to two videos 1). How to choose and cut flowers, and 2). The different options you use to hang and display your finished collage.
I will be publishing a video where I do the unicorn quilt but choosing the flowers isn’t something I thought to discuss. That’s a good question tho. I cut out as many flowers as I could and organized them by color. I then just start placing and at first it’s a mess but the more you put the more it starts to come together. Then you start getting picky once they’re placed.
Please will you show the layering you’ve described?
