I have never tried sand paper. I like 0000 steel wool with oil. No scratches at all. It smooths all surfaces of the ruler. It does a beautiful job on the head of the square as well. The result is a beautiful finish on both the head and the ruler. I then wax the square with paste wax. Final result very smooth operation.

That's a great tip. This square had very slight pitting, so the light sanding helped restore a smooth surface.
