Gabriel Fuoco yeah whoever paid upwards of 30k for the gti is str8 foolish. The diff and brakes are not worth the extra 10k and if you are going into that 30k range for a gti, you might as well throw the additional 10k and get the r!
subrosasalvador2011 Not from what I've seen. All I see is that it turns into a bit of a monster on the highway. The torque steer management on the GTI is fantastic.
+Alex G Agreed, I'm a enthusiast driver myself, but I use my bike a lot for short distance, and I love to bike, not performance biking like those persons we see in the video, but I still love to go fast and downhill. I also walk a lot in city and hiking and stuff. So I really hate those pseudo-feud between the three category, if all of them respect the rules and courtesy logic there's no problem. But Butthead Car drivers are often also buttheaded cyclist and vice versa.
as a modified 330hp car driver, motorcyclist, and cyclist, i can say safety of other public road users is what everyone should put above all else. if you aren't, you shouldn't be behind the wheel. cyclists use lane choice just like a motorcyclist and the one around the blind turn was absolutely right
I second that, I’m a cyclist and race bikes as well as enjoy cars. And we’re all out there to enjoy the roads. However the cyclists who don’t respect the roads and ride all over the place ruins it for those of us who do
The reason why the DSG is "confused" when you downshift when you're coasting is because the DSG is only that fast because the next gear is already engaged. However, the gearbox has to predict which the next gear is gonna be. If you're just coasting along, the gearbox thinks you're not using any power, so you will surely shift up soon. When you shift down instead, it first has to engage the next lower gear before it can shift. This is normal and happens on all DCTs. The only difference will be how the car predicts the next gear.
Not completely certain about your explanation. From my understanding, as the dual clutch has two clutches, there is a clutch for the even gears and the other clutch for the odd gear. Therefore, if I was coasting along in gear 4, both 3 and 5 would be 'primed' by the second clutch. I'm probably wrong about this though.
Sarin Murlidar When you are accelerating in let us say, 2nd gear, 3rd is already selected but 3rd's clutch is disengaged. Pull the paddle to upshift, and the clutches just swap. The even clutch disengages, the odd clutch engages. When braking in 2nd, the gearbox selects first. Press the downshift paddle and the odd and even clutch swap. The dual clutch gearboxes are fast since all you are doing is engaging one clutch, and disengaging the other.
TheSmokingTire My brothers Scirocco seems to handle this pretty well. I assume it's the same transmission. When you start driving it might be somewhat confused but as soon as you have a little bit of distance behind you it seems to know it pretty well. What I've found is that it's much more accurate if you're shifting on brake pressure though. I don't know how everything is programmed but I can only assume that the car assumes you'll shift down when breaking.
Sarin Murlidar Watch the "Engineering Explained" Video on this. Only one gear is preselected. TheSmokingTire PDK works exactly the same way though. Maybe the "bad guess" shifting is faster and feels better some way and/or the prediction algorithm works better or aligns better with your driving style. It still works the same way and can only preselect one gear.
Matt you're a great role model for car enthusiasts, I love cycling and driving and I wish more people were as happy to share enjoying the road as you are.
Sean D Haha sad but true. Unfortunately disconnecting the Sondaktor will then require you to get a better exhaust or a nice downpipe. Stock exhaust is too quiet...too much sound deadening makes it very hard to hear from inside. What you can still hear in spirited driving with your windows down is what us DSG owners call 'DSG farts' when you upshift the car makes popping sounds that are pretty nice. I can't wait to get a slightly louder exhaust.
***** Yeah that's true, although I'm quite sure that VAG pipe in the engine noise as well, my GTI doesn't use the stereo. BMW's is the worse though by far, sounds the least bit convincing.
Oh a massive difference agreed, i have Falken FK510's on my MK4 and theyre honestly way stickier than i thought they would be, mated to some 17x8 Enkei RPF1's
@@BenDover-io9vg So I guess All Season Tires are a no-no for a GTI? I live in an area with hot summers but not so harsh winters, although from time to time we get some serious snow. So... no?
@@inertboi I wouldn't rule out all all-season tires cause there's good ones out there.. but the Pirelli P7s that came stock on a lot of our cars are hot garbage. You would need to pay me to drive on those. I've been on the cost friendly Indy 500 summer tires and the difference in grip, noise, handling, predictability, and driving feel is astronomical. It even grips in rain conditions. If you have good conditions for most of the year then summer tires are a no brainer. People in snow areas offen run a second winter set of wheels (usually steelies) with winter tires. It's law in many places actually. Good all seasons are a good compromise I suppose but I never bothered researching cause I don't need to lol. I'm in SoCal for reference.
@@BenDover-io9vg Lucky you, I'm jelly. I live in an area where winters are required by law. If I lived in a hot climate, of course summer tires would be a no brainer. I was just wondering if all seasons would be any good in snowy conditions, especially considering it's a performance FWD car. Perhaps it would be dumb to own such car and save money on tires. It's just that owning two sets of rims and tires and changing them twice a year is an annoying and time consuming (also costly) chore.
Yes, ST might be faster but it has cheap interior and not than comfort seats. Many people just miss the point of GTI. GTI might not the best powerful and best handling in the segment. But it has better and comfort interior than others, like focus/fiesta ST. And bigger than mini cooper S. All around is a better multi-purpose car, this is the point of GTI.
3:10-3:50 great explanation.. hope people heed the advice. too many people believe the GTI can be upgraded to an R, just like people think the wrx can easily be upgraded to an STi
zed4me Well the difference between the R and the GTi in the last generation was almost not worth it, so many people may still believe that the R is simply overrated at that price. But as he said the new R is definitely well above the new GTI specially with a simple tune.
TheSmokingTire I am a cyclist and a car lover. Think you for always making a point in your reviews for being aware of cyclist on the road and not just complaining about them being on the road. And not to start any arguments I love when I see some one having on on a canyon road and I try to always move out of the way and let them have fun.
I'm sure you could care less Matt. But my friend has a brand new gti that he bought for 24k. Its a base stick car with no other options. He bought an intake, downpipe, and better diverter valve for it. With an Apr tune he just made 300whp and 365 wtq on a mustang dyno. The car is a riot to drive and he's only into it 25k roughly. I feel that's a better value than the golf r. My personal opinion tho. Great review
***** It may be, and I'm sure it's a lot of fun. But I feel like the benefits of the AWD system in pulling out of corners can not be overcome by any mod you can do to the FWD car, especially when you're talking about that much power.
I just bought a MK7 GTI. I test drove a fully loaded 4 door with DSG, leather and nav and everything and I did not like the way the car steered, it felt less engaging and it was less fun to drive than the basic model. A fully loaded GTI is wrong to me, a hot hatch should be simple! So I bought a two door manual with the 18 inch wheels. To my surprise they came wrapped in super sticky pirelli tires right from the dealership. I drive the car like a total hooligan and the tires don't squeal like the car you tested. I put on the sport mode and select the sport setting of the esc which allows just the right amount of slip. In tight corners, the back of the car rotates under heavy steering input, its great fun.
GTI's have a long, legendary pedigree. Good value, and you can't go wrong with one! Great daily driver too. I like my MK7 a lot, but also loved my MK4 24V VR6 GTI and my MK4 '337' GTI.
The amount of respect Matt shows to cyclists and home owners it be be applauded. Cyclist should respect car drivers, car drivers respect them. There is enough space for everyone - enjoy :-) And oh, another great video
Any chance of coming out with a top 5 cars you've driven for the year / reasons why you'd choose want to drive them? Reasonably of course, not meaning to pick the most expensive super car you've driven, because people like to relate but yeah haha lol, best wishes from Pittsburgh!
Great point explaining the realistic limitation of getting additional power down in the GTI. It's just true. I've driven and been in mild to highly modified fwd cars and traction gets difficult quickly.
You held the traction button down for a second, that means you turned traction control off. Stability control can't be turned off completely (due to the electonric LSD i believe) but you were in normal stability control, not "sport ESC" - which requries holding the button for 5 secs
I love the active match revving system they put in the new MK7 DSG's. Plus with the launch feature and now a sport mode they are so much better than the MK6. The tunes also make so much more power with the new motor and turbo. I just wish I would have held out another year and got one. I still love my stage 2 MK6 though.
David, truly outstanding reviews of this and the R. i am beyond impressed with how you can do copiously address every single concern of line with such relevance. Through an odd twist, I'm ending up with a fully loaded 16 autobahn next week but couldn't get the R directly. I have the choice of selling it brand new for around 29-30 and sticking in another 6 or so for the R. For depreciation avoidance alone, it appears worth the painful move. My guess' that you could keep the R 4 years, put 75k on it and not lose a ton. Outstanding driving of yours and how you can talk so intelligently while driving so adeptly(?), has inspired me each time I watch these 2 videos. We visit malibu often and love some of those back roads.
Audi might be better then Golf R.., which might be better then the GTI.. BUT the price difference is not proportional !! S3 is not worth $18.000 more then the GTI
Having owned a handful of VW's all with DSG I agree with you. It can definitely be temperamental and finicky. Have to say from my 2006 GTI to my 14' GLI the DSG has definitely evolved and is much more refined. With that being said there's always room for improvement, but its still one of the better autos out there available today.
First off your a skilled and respectful driver. My issue is with your math. For a $600 tune you can get 75 extra hp to the wheel of a GTI that pulls away from the R. That's just getting started. That $9000 difference in price and haldex are deal breakers for most.
The tires on this car stock is rubbish (I have a GTI PP) - And about the NAV, in other parts of the world, you can get an 8 inch screen instead, quite pricy though - But looks great (My car was $42.000~ here in Sweden though, not as cheap as in the US) :(
Very good testing drive video. Telling truths when u drive gti and r. Good driving on the country roads. Also respect other traffickers on the testing roads. Very matured driver and nice jobs done. Mk 7 Golf deserves" car of the year " "world car of the year"at each continent around the world since 2013.
I bought a 2017 VW GTI S 6spd manual for $23k out the door, brand new with 4 miles on it. Golf R's at the same time, brand new were $41k. That's an $18k difference guys! And for what? AWD, and a couple other things? That's an insane jump for the R. Since I've bought my GTI, I've put $11k into it. That includes coil-over, wheels/tires, EQT turbo (IS38 hybrid) tuned by Frank Mabo, Stage 2 clutch, brakes, and so many other goodies (some performance, some sound system, some aesthetics). If someone went my route, they could easily only be around $7k into the car with the power and suspension mods that I have. Lets say somebody did do that. That puts them in the $30k range for their GTI, that's waaaay faster, and can handle waaaay better than a stock Golf R, and the GTI owner is saving around $10k still!! Yes, the Golf R owner could also do the same mods, but then they are into the car at $50k+, which gives the GTI an even better price to car savings ratio compared to the R. Like $20k in savings!! Spend another $20k on the GTI, and it would be mental!! I don't know about you, but for the price of a bone stock R, it just ain't worth it. Yes, it will come out of corners better with the AWD, but hell, with that $20k savings on the GTI, you could put in AWD on it, and still be way cheaper. Part of the reason why the R is the price it is is because of its name, and I get that, but between these two cars, the best route to go is the base S model GTI. That's if you plan on building it. If you plan on keeping it stock, the Autobahn GTI is the best bang for your buck.
The big difference between gti and r is that if you go to some sort of competition, you'll end up in 2wd vs awd classes. And you'll face completely different competition!
Hi Matt, Can you tell me why you think the S3 is better than the golf R? All the reviews I've read or watched say the opposite when it comes to performance. Just want to know your reasons as I respect your point of view. Thanks in advance.
Just got mine yesterday, 6 sp autobahn, PP. I can't believe how tall the gearing is, noticeable from my MK6. I was always finding myself cruising over 55 on 4th. It doesn't help that the cabin is relatively quiet, might have to buy an exhaust soon.
Have you ever seen their Fiesta ST? It has more power than the GTI at 240Bhp and 318ibf and less weight. The GTI weights 1351Kg, the US fiesta weights 1234Kg and the European(Including rest of world except North America) weights 1088Kg.
Daniels30 Fiesta ST has 197hp and 202 torque. It weighs 2,720 lbs and just has Fords basic braking dif in it. This Gti has 220hp and 258 torque. It weighs 2,972 and has the insanely amazing electronic limited slip and the xds+ system working together. The Focus ST I think is what you might be thinking of.
Garen Gasparovic Are you new the the channel? Matt's Fiesta before he sold it had the power figures. Yes a diff does help but less weight is so much more efficient, as well as having a shorter wheelbase. The fiesta also puts power down better with out a clever diff.
Garen Gasparovic Define better, I love the GTI but the Fiesta is simply more fun, particularly here in Europe where it's so much lighter. A light, fast, engaging, fun car is great.
Hi Matt, appreciate your videos. Did you notice that the GTI has less turbo lag as compared to the R? I suppose you wouldn't notice it driving down the Latigo and keeping in between 3,000 to 6,000 revs. But uphill and from low revs it should be noticeable as the R has a bigger turbo and needs more time to spool up. What tire make were on the GTI, Bridgestones? I had those and they were pretty horrible so I swapped them for Conti Sport Contact5 which made a big improvement.
Golf R is Definitely a Wolf in sheep's clothing once you add a stage 1 tune. One thing to consider when comparing a standard GTI to a Golf R is that Golf R's still bring M.S.R.P.. Due to the VW emissions scandal you can buy a GTI for close to $4-4,500 off sticker price. That basically puts the base GTI with DSG and PP at 28,000 OTD here in CA where as the Golf R with the DSG is $41,690 OTD. That puts the price difference closer to $13,690.
EE DRAKEDOG or you could buy a used C63/m3/335i/s4 and be done with it. Seriously, why waste money on an overpriced golf and mods for it? at the end of the day it's still a fwd 4-cyl hatchback. lol.
DGRWPF Why? Because 600 dollars added on to a 28,000 dollar new GTI will get you 300+ hp. You act like it's expensive to tune the car. 600 dollar flash will make this a 300+ hp car. How many sub 30 grand cars have 300+ hp? And FWD is not mutually exclusive to performance driving especially with the lsd and great summer tires this thing with a stage 1 tune would still be faster than a 40+ grand 335i.
***** A stage 1 tune refers to a remapping of the ecu which is the computer inside modern cars that controls things such as boost pressure in turbocharged cars. Almost all turbocharged vehicles are significantly easy to increase horsepower because all that needs to be done is increasing the boost pressure from the turbocharger in the vehicle. APR which does only VAG vehicles(Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche) is a highly reputable company that makes the software to do these ecu tunes and they tend to be highly reliable. Subaru owners use a different company, primarily Kobb I believe. You are going to have to look up what generation your 99 subaru is if it supports an edu tune. Again stage 1 usually refers to just a software tune with zero hardware modifications.
xampx2k7 I'm doing some announcing during the time attack, doing a few one takes on the track, and giving some rides in the press BMW M235i I'm driving. Come say hi, I'll be around!
As a 2015 STI owner, i wish he took the 2015 STI around this road instead of the wide open road to test the mediocre power of the subaru. the powerplant hasnt changed for the STI but the handling has been dramatically improved. It's changed enough that it can beat the cla amg and m355i around the the Streets of Willow. I'm sure if Matt took the STI around this nice tight curvy road, he would be a little bit more impressed.
I'm trying to decide between getting a 2015 Sti or a 2015 GT. from your experience, is the Sti a good daily? Is the power/ throttle response fun, or do you feel that you can easily use all the power?
i test drove a 2015 GT lately and a boss 302 before the STI. the STI with snow tires will go anywhere during the winter or blizzard. the power is enough around town but when youre on an empty stretch of highway, its easy to use all of it. i had a 350z before this and this STI is my first turbo car and its pretty addicting haha
GTI is. Lets say both cars bought hybrid IS38 turbos, and accompanying mods. The GTI is faster from a roll because its lighter. AWD doesn't do crap for you except when launching and cornering. But roll races, it does nothing for you, but put more drive train loss on you.
That was enjoyable, now I want to take my 2016 GTI to Latigo Cyn. Having rode it on motorcycle probable 25-30 times rarely do I see a CHP. You do not realize how steep that is until you go up it, motorcycle only way............................ need the HP. I can tell you had the speaker engine noise thing on.
For me I would pay the extra money for the R. We live in the mountains & the R would be a blast to drive in the snow & just for the added traction of the all wheel drive would be nice. Plus from the factory the R is much quicker then the GTI. However I would wait for the manual. if that released one.
I can not believe they are upcharging the Golf R by $5k right now.. it seriously pissed me off so much. That was the last straw in my decision to pre-order the RS--and i'm a loyal vw owner.
Torrey B which RS did you pre-order? The Focus? :) I might buy one as well, but i have to drive it first. and yeah, VAG prices are crazy lately. ffs even a 4-cyl diesel passat with some decent options like gps nav and leather seats is over 40k euros here. lol.
My VW dealer in Rockville MD not only didn't add any premium, but offered a substantial discount on a Golf R. I went with an S3 instead but not because VW wasn't accommodating with pricing. If you're really getting a premium and not just making that up, try other dealers.
Adrian Myers don't know why id make that up :/ both dealers were in san diego.. check out the inventory at south bay vw and city vw if you want ! it sucks...
I'm a fan of these new gti's, with a tune they are no slouches unlike the last one. My bolt on v6 accord stomped app over stage 2 mk6's, and ive raced the mk7 gti (vi on my channel) instock form and beat it, but im sure a stage 1 mk7 would pull me as i am untuned
In the current market a brand new 18’ GTI can be found at around 20-23k.. and a used Golf R with 30+k miles on it will be tough to find for under 30k. That’s a 7-10k difference. Although that may not seem like a lot to the reviewer, $7-10k is a shit ton when you’re shopping for cars in the 20-30k range. Ofc the Golf R is better, I wish this guy reviewed the car for what it is- and not as a golf r competitor.
I think GTI is best than R. When you have had three Gti, your father had a Gti, your friends have a Gti, and you are 51 years old and 40 loving the Gti, you want a Gti, not an R. That's why I love my manual Mk7 Gti
I respect the R a lot, but $10K is $10K (and it's often more at different dealers). You could get a GTI, spend half of that delta on mods, and still have a bunch of money left over. The entire point of the GTI is to be a (relatively) cheap and cheerful pocket rocket. For what you spend on an R, you're entering off-lease M3 territory, which is a completely different level of car. The stock tires are also crap, get onto some performance rubber as soon as you can. This one upgrade really opens up the chassis envelope of the car, especially given that the GTI is the lighter car.
Matt, another great video! Any chance you would do diesels? I would very much like to hear what you think of the Golf GTD. It has the GTI looks but is more frugal. Not sure though if you get that over in America or not?
I had a 13 golf R and it was just alright. My evo now will demolish both the GTI and the new golf R but honestly it's not a DD and offers nothing other than speed and cornering. I rather have the refined interior at this point.
Would you prefer this car new or a lightly used BMW 328i (F30)? The price and performance specs are similar and I had trouble deciding between the two. I ultimately chose the BMW but would like to have another opinion.
I got my mk6 gti because they were available in 3door vs the R (Canadian problems) but I saved probably 10 grand over getting a used R. The way I see it, is even if I were to use that 10 grand for performance mods to the gti, it still wont be AWD, so it will always be restricted. But thats not to say the gti isnt a good time.
Well, that was fun! Reminded me of a good reason I got my used FR-S, and that I shouldn't feel too bad that I got the auto with paddle shifters instead of a stick, which I sometimes miss. I wondered what you were going to do about that Lexus. He was moving along a little better after you came on the scene. Where is this? Southern LA county? OC?
While Latigo is a great road, it's not what I'd consider the best one to showcase the GTI's strong suits. As Matt said, it's primarily a 2nd/3rd gear canyon, but the GTI is at its best on faster 3rd/4th gear roads- like the one he tested the Golf R on. Malibu canyon is full of tight twisty roads that are a lot of fun, but the faster roads are where the GTI shines....
The tires make all the difference. Mine came with all weather touring tires. Summer performance tires will eliminate most of the noise and it will sharpen the turn-in.
Something tells me that the GTI would have a slight advantage uphill because of its smaller/peppier turbo, and full torque at 1,500rpm. Doesn't the R's IS38 require a bit more spooling? I think that could cause an issue in some situations.
Very curious to hear your thoughts on a stock 2016 Jetta GLI (i know you've done other MKVI's that have been modded, but curious on how you feel the stock GLI is against the GTI)
Matt, How fast do you want to go? You are no where near the limits of the GTI on that road. Where do you plan on going so much faster? Can we get a reality check?
a mk5 or mk6 stock brake will not tolerate 12miles of sporty driving down the hill. Brake pedal will get longer and longer and you start to smell the brake at the end.... The sports package in the MK7 seems to fix this somewhat
I upgraded my pads and rotors on my MK6 I don't have that problem anymore and I prefer to try to go as fast as I can with minimal breaking and that is what I feel the GTI is great at.
Hey. I like your videos. Keep up the good work. One thing...not that big of a deal. Golf R DSG you tested is only 173 lbs heavier than GTI DSG. Not 300 lbs.Unless Car and Driver is wrong. R=3409. GTI =3236. Maybe you had the manual weight?
Hey Matt! @thesmokingtire, what setting do you use for you V1, Ive been just using the all bands setting but is it worth going into the advanced settings?? Thanks! love the videos
Who in their right mind goes to VW and says: "I'll have a GTI, with the Performance Pack, 'cause it's better, but don't forget to give me the shitty headlights."
I'm just curious, how fast are you actually going on these turns and such. I know the camera makes is seem like it's faster than what it really is. And you might have already said it, but if you did i missed it. Thanks
I have a question. Do all of the MK7 Gti's in the US come with the CPLA 211hp engine or do all of them even the non performance pack one's come with the CHHB. CPLA has the honeywell turbo and the CHHB has the IS20 turbo. I am very curious because I have not found any info on it
For $6,000 less than the Civic Type R ($6,800 without the tune), you can tune the GTI and crank out way higher numbers. Easily 10+ more hp and 50+ Tq over the stock Civic Type R. That is just with a stage 1 tune, nothing else. I have a good hunch, the Type R only beat the GTI on the nuremberg track because of the additional power. If you plan to Stage 2 or 3 the GTI, you're better off saving your money and going with AWD.
What model Potenza's where on that? I have the RE003's on my car and so far (they are still pretty new) they don't make anywhere near that much noise when at the limit. Much heavier car and RWD though...
I want a review of the GTI, not how much worse it is then the R.
Dan Coyne no shit right
Kyle Ebbitt gti is what we get if we can't afford 40k for golf r
Gabriel Fuoco yeah whoever paid upwards of 30k for the gti is str8 foolish. The diff and brakes are not worth the extra 10k and if you are going into that 30k range for a gti, you might as well throw the additional 10k and get the r!
Kyle Ebbitt here in Albuquerque they discounted 4K off gti
Gabriel Fuoco just got one 2 days ago, I love it.
I don't care if the R is faster, turns better and handles better. The GTI has plaid seats!
The GTI can be made to have over 290whp with a stage one tune.
+OspreyBravo18 and the only thing 290 is gonna do is make the car understeer/powersteer like a retarded fish
subrosasalvador2011 Not from what I've seen. All I see is that it turns into a bit of a monster on the highway. The torque steer management on the GTI is fantastic.
Not with the performance package. Limited slip diff.
And a sunroof option, too! (No sunroof in Golf R)
Thank you for having respect for cyclists and sharing the road. The Internet may not thank you but I will sir.

The reason why the DSG is "confused" when you downshift when you're coasting is because the DSG is only that fast because the next gear is already engaged.

Benedocta PDK doesn't do it. PDK does exacly what you tell it to do, perfectly, every time.
The GTI is a great sounding car for a 4 cylinder.
MrGovenator1 Gotta love that piped in speaker noise.
MrGovenator1 The WRX is even better!
***** If anything, the ST sounds even faker with its induction sound, does sound good though.
***** Yeah that's true, although I'm quite sure that VAG pipe in the engine noise as well, my GTI doesn't use the stereo. BMW's is the worse though by far, sounds the least bit convincing.
Appreciate that words on automobile and cyclist interactions. It isn't always easy to share the road -- from both perspectives.
Getting good tires makes a big difference in the Gti
Oh a massive difference agreed, i have Falken FK510's on my MK4 and theyre honestly way stickier than i thought they would be, mated to some 17x8 Enkei RPF1's
I really can't emphasize this enough.
All around is a better multi-purpose car, this is the point of GTI.
gayyyy
3:10-3:50 great explanation.. hope people heed the advice. too many people believe the GTI can be upgraded to an R, just like people think the wrx can easily be upgraded to an STi
zed4me Well the difference between the R and the GTi in the last generation was almost not worth it, so many people may still believe that the R is simply overrated at that price. But as he said the new R is definitely well above the new GTI specially with a simple tune.
David Lombana in manual form the r hasa tighter manual trans
I wish you'd try the Golf R / GTI in a 6 speed for once.....
***** Stage 2 is around 300 crank, no way he is making that much power without a turbo upgrade.
illec read the forums, you can make more than 300 at the crank with stage 2.
illec Stage 2 on a Mk7 is well above 300 crank. Stage 1 is already 315hp at the crank.
illec we have the dyno sheets the new engine in the mk7 is a whole different animal. it loves to make power
There is enough space for everyone - enjoy :-)
And oh, another great video
Lovely car. Wish I saw more around SoCal. Thinking about getting a 2016 model myself which has AndroidAuto/AppleCarplay
Matt is a cool dude. I have the opportunity to meeting him while he was filming in the mountains.
Hey Matt, thanks for risking your license with tickets posting these reviews. I for one look forward to each and everyone of them. Thank you sir.
"Because vehicular homicide will really ruin your canyon carving day." We need this on a t-shirt Matt.
Audi might be better then Golf R.., which might be better then the GTI.. BUT the price difference is not proportional !! S3 is not worth $18.000 more then the GTI
Huge fan of these one takes. Cant wait to see the one take with that 04 r32.
Matt I'm a cyclist and car lover, just want to thank you for being repectful and setting a good example.
I have a 2015 black Abarth with some crazy performance mods! Having a blast with it for 23,000!
Thanks for the comparison talk of the GTI PP vs. the Golf R.
Matt, I'd love to see you take this run in the R! Those cloverleaf turns look like a lot of fun.
Matt, please show us the car's dashboard, in a corner of the screen somewhere, while you are driving it. Great vids!
vladsb221 no, that's called "evidence."
The tires on this car stock is rubbish (I have a GTI PP) - And about the NAV, in other parts of the world, you can get an 8 inch screen instead, quite pricy though - But looks great (My car was $42.000~ here in Sweden though, not as cheap as in the US) :(
Sucks it doesn't have the Lighting Package. It dramatically increases the looks of it and I'd take it over the Performance Pack.
Hi Matt,
Can you tell me why you think the S3 is better than the golf R?
All the reviews I've read or watched say the opposite when it comes to performance. Just want to know your reasons as I respect your point of view.
Thanks in advance.
I own this car, this spec. He is driving the hell out of it. Way faster that I would. Whew!
I can find these used for 22k now, I can't wait to purchase one someday. I love the golf r but they are still 35k
Just got mine yesterday, 6 sp autobahn, PP. I can't believe how tall the gearing is, noticeable from my MK6. I was always finding myself cruising over 55 on 4th. It doesn't help that the cabin is relatively quiet, might have to buy an exhaust soon.
Loving these videos. Hope to see one on a 2016 MIata in the coming months. Have to decide Fiesta ST, GTI, or MIata.
Saying the Fiesta St is faster on that road is some grade a BS. One thing if talking about the Focus St, but even still.
Have you ever seen their Fiesta ST? It has more power than the GTI at 240Bhp and 318ibf and less weight. The GTI weights 1351Kg, the US fiesta weights 1234Kg and the European(Including rest of world except North America) weights 1088Kg.
Daniels30
Fiesta ST has 197hp and 202 torque.
Daniels30
The Gti is still a better car. Power isn't everything, it helps but it doesn't make the car great.
Gti with stage one is the best value ever
you can get 400+hp for little money and with the right settings this thing becomes a rocket xD
EE DRAKEDOG 400+ hp on a fwd car sounds like a really bad idea.
***** I drag race and use slicks... Not an issue. My SRT-4 had 370hp/400lbs of torque, ran 11's.
Been waiting for this one!
lol that guy in the lexus RX was definitely pushing it
Love the reviews. Keep them coming!
That "intake" noise is 'enhanced'. The VW Soundaktor transducer under the dash is making most of that interior grunt noise.
i love my apr tuned tsi base model!
Matt, come to Chicago and drive my '05 350z Anniversary Edition. I'll even pay for your airplane food.
***** I will be outside chicago this weekend at the Gridlife festival at Gingerman Raceway.
TheSmokingTire You guys gonna have a tent there or something of the sort? Me and some buddies will be there.
xampx2k7 I'm doing some announcing during the time attack, doing a few one takes on the track, and giving some rides in the press BMW M235i I'm driving. Come say hi, I'll be around!
I literally just got done listening to a TST podcast where one of the guys said everyone in Chicago has a 350z lol
rstormzand You have your facts confused... It's just me. I'm the only one with a 350z here because it's such a rare car.
Which does more damage against bikers the golf r or gti?
Road kill is road kill ..
Torrey B That's your dealer's decision... not VW.
Torrey B which RS did you pre-order? The Focus? :) I might buy one as well, but i have to drive it first.
and yeah, VAG prices are crazy lately. ffs even a 4-cyl diesel passat with some decent options like gps nav and leather seats is over 40k euros here. lol.
I know, but every dealer I visit has placed it on top of the msrp. Yes, the Focus RS
My VW dealer in Rockville MD not only didn't add any premium, but offered a substantial discount on a Golf R. I went with an S3 instead but not because VW wasn't accommodating with pricing. If you're really getting a premium and not just making that up, try other dealers.
Adrian Myers don't know why id make that up :/ both dealers were in san diego.. check out the inventory at south bay vw and city vw if you want ! it sucks...
I have that same Gti and I’m very happy with it but I really want that golf r
I'm a fan of these new gti's, with a tune they are no slouches unlike the last one. My bolt on v6 accord stomped app over stage 2 mk6's, and ive raced the mk7 gti (vi on my channel) instock form and beat it, but im sure a stage 1 mk7 would pull me as i am untuned
Enjoy these videos more and more! A UK visit would be cool... You can Drive my stage 3 APR B5 S4.
Great style of review mate.
Such a fun car.
Where is this drive tho ? I wanna be behind the wheel on this drive
Ford Focus st or GTI? I am debating so much. I feel like i want the refinement of the GTI but the speed and sillyness of the Focus.
I was in the same boat. just bought a gti 2 weeks ago. (that's why I'm watching this) haven't even thought about that Ford in those 2 weeks.
I was in the same boat. just bought a gti 2 weeks ago. (that's why I'm watching this) haven't even thought about that Ford in those 2 weeks.
MrMillenium67 We do not get the GTD in America. Unfortunately, while we do get a lot of diesel VW models, none of them are performance-based.
Vernon Price Ok I wasn't sure if you did or not..shame as it's a great compromise if you can't afford the costs of the GTI. Many thanks for the reply!
I had a 13 golf R and it was just alright. My evo now will demolish both the GTI and the new golf R but honestly it's not a DD and offers nothing other than speed and cornering. I rather have the refined interior at this point.
would be cool if you take a quick take with a tuned GTI
Would you prefer this car new or a lightly used BMW 328i (F30)? The price and performance specs are similar and I had trouble deciding between the two. I ultimately chose the BMW but would like to have another opinion.
Lots of comparisons to car that cost 10k more......otherwise great honest review as usual.
Thanks for showing us cyclists respect... most of us are petrolheads too!
Is that a speed 6 in the beginning of the video?...
Yes, I just got one for doing 60 in a 45. Will probably be paying the court costs.
Nice one takes man. Any chance you'll be doing a E46 M3 any time soon? I'd love to see that.
Josh Donivan See E46 vs Fiesta ST ;)
I think you're a little bias toward the R. We came here to hear about the GTI though.
Something tells me that the GTI would have a slight advantage uphill because of its smaller/peppier turbo, and full torque at 1,500rpm.
Doesn't the R's IS38 require a bit more spooling? I think that could cause an issue in some situations.
Hey matt, this or the fiesta ST, which one would you pick?
It will be my daily, but I also have an ford fusion so comfort is not a concern at all
Very curious to hear your thoughts on a stock 2016 Jetta GLI (i know you've done other MKVI's that have been modded, but curious on how you feel the stock GLI is against the GTI)
Would love to see you drive a stock wrx on this road. I'm in the market for base wrx or gti sport still undecided
Thanks! love the videos
love the one takes!!
Who in their right mind goes to VW and says: "I'll have a GTI, with the Performance Pack, 'cause it's better, but don't forget to give me the shitty headlights."
Ha, i noticed that as well.
+RedDotChiliPepper96 The Lighting package is $1,000.
+Devon Parker In the European version, the Bi- Xenon LED headlights come as standard.
And how much does the Euro version cost?
+Devon Parker 29.225 € normal one, 30.400 € for the Performance Version.
Hey Matt my dad just bought a fiesta st cause I shown him your vids.
Matt you left the right mirror defroster on. You should turn that off.
