Just FYI, that engine noise you heard in cabin is not real exhaust note. That was generated by a little speak behind the dash. It makes the engine sounds more "mean".
Ryan Chen Soundaktor...unplug it, get a new downpipe and a tune...goodbye to just about anything else in that category.

Great review, glad you pointed out DSG faults and also the smaller 5.8" screen. Lighting package is a must with the Manual!

Excellent review! Too bad I am watching this AFTER I bought my GTI Autobahn. But I learned a bit about the performance, namely the acceleration numbers...0-60mph in under 6 seconds! Yes! That is the magic number I was hoping you would spew, and you did deliver! Again, awesome review!

loving the new GTI
Love this car. Already driven it from San Diego to San Francisco and to Palm Springs, with 0 problems and it's fast, fun, practical and refined. Only possible complaint is the seats could be a _little_ more supportive. I got the SE with lighting package which is better than the autobahn without lighting package IMO. The leather seats haven't been a problem at all and i've been in 90+ degree weather a lot in this. Tinting the windows and the white paint helped.
As for tech, if you wanted better 'appearing' tech, the overpriced (imo) audi's offer that. But it's mostly for show. And I'd rather use my phone for maps than car based navigation any day.

If you ever get the chance, you should definitely review the 1.0L ecoboost in the Fiesta or Focus!

Just bought a certified pre-owned 2012 gti autobahn and it's nice to see my car isn't obsolete
You should get up to speed on DSG and PDK transmissions. You stated S was for the track, it can be used for so much more it's a blast in curvy Mtn roads in S and all is the a DSG to its magic, you can control up and down shifts with taps to the accelerator and brake pedals, etc. nice review.

I still struggle to find a case for a FWD "sport" car. They fixed it in the R line but the GTI is still the volume seller here.

The Stock models all need better tires, better intake, and turbo in order to add to the daily drive but additional boost when you need it. I do love my GTI with everything stock. A few days ago, I was got into an informal street race with a Mercedes C300 Sport and for the 1st quarter mile I was a noise ahead consistently, even with poor shifting skills.
I love my GTI, but I need to save for the 7K Stage 3 kits.
Hey dude - did your review model have "GTI" painted on the front brake calipers like I saw at the beginning? Because if so, that's the Performance Pack! You reviewed the PP without knowing! :D

You said this car feels more refined than the 6th gen. How much of that is because you were driving the Autobahn package, rather than one of the lower trim GTIs?

In the next year or two , I will be buying my first car and I would like it to last atleast 6-8 years .. Now I narrowed down to these stick shift cars : 2015 Mazada 3 2.5L , 10-13 Infiniti G37s , 07-08 Acura Tl type-s , 13-14 Mustang V6 , 13 Acura TSX & 12-13 Golf GTI . I actually favor factors like "Fun to drive" and reliability with reasonable gas mileage & I live in Canada with arsh winters.. Can someone help me out or so give me other choices of cars ? Thank you very much & BTW , Nice review like always :)

Did you not see the fit and finish issue on the dash? On the right side of the touch screen those two panels were not lined up very well. Disappointing for an expensive Volkswagen.

Never drove an SI but I have a 15 GTI and love it.
Will this break down after the warranty has expired too? Keep in mind VW only offers 2 year warranties! 3 year if extended (1 year more lol!)
They all have three year warranties lol. And 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. You're probably thinking of the 2 year free maintenence plan.

You're right. That was my bad. Mexico's VW has to step up their game, they don't bring any kind of warranties above 2 years here yet.
Zuriel Briones my Co worker has this car, he has a 5 yr full maintenance plan but you obviously pay more.

Dea Garic yes I'm in Ca, but my Co worker likes to juice up stories so I don't know if he really has a 5 yr maintenance plan. One thing I'll tell you though he's let me ride in his car and no lie my 07 honda accord 4 cyl stock my engine sounds louder and the gti does not seem to feel fast for its hp and torque specs. Again I feel like my accord would be almost as fast as the gti and it's not even a racing sporty car like the gti is. I think why the gti feels sluggish is because it's really heavy for a hatchback, it weighs 4100 lbs and is a 2 door hatch with no sunroom. My accord is a 4 door sedan with a sunroof and it's weighs 4300lbs! So yeah if you're looking to buy the gti for performance I would head in a different direction as you can see the downfall of the gti it's really heavy for a 2dr hatch and for its price tag not impressed at all
Does this car has apple car play?
I have a 2015 GTI Autobahn, and it's quick, be noisy. Lots of road noise from the cheap tires. Already recalls on it and it should have come with more changing and not that low as he is saying. Also, exhaust sound is very weak.
