I have a 2015 red GTI. The thing is with this car, once you’ve experienced it. Not just the speed but also the composure, the stability and the balance between ride and handling, you just cannot return to ‘normal’ cars without feeling something lacking. The GTI is just that good. I also have an F30 330i from 2018, it’s just as fast but the sensation is not the same. The GTI really is something special. And it makes you feel special. Another ‘regular’ car i have tried that gives the same feeling is the Jaguar XE. It just makes you feel, special.
I bought a PP GTI in black, manual g/box. Just lovely. Great in Comfort mode when cruising around, then brilliantly responsive in Sport. The way the diff pulls you round corners really is fantastic, you can totally nail it before the apex, no understeer! At all! And it's fast.. not tear your eyeballs out fast and not as quick as a Megane 265, but have you seen the interior of the Megane!! I love the GTI and smile every time I hit the start button. Xcar review bang on, keep up the good work!
"Because good enough is 't good enough, it's got to be perfect" : fantastic quote, and its true :)
Great review as always; I have a GTI Mk7.5 and have loved every drive with a huge smile on my face
XCAR, you nailed it with the "gateway car" philosophy of the GTI. It introduces the younger generation to a level of quality and composure that is often unmatched, let alone along its near 40 year history. Buyers then opt for vehicles of a similar genre, going upscale to Audi, BMW etc. Its almost like the GTI is killing the next generation of enthusiasts by being so good at everything.
I no longer own a GTI but I like this review... It is the best car for the average joe. It really does have everything you really need in a car. Price, comfort and speed. I mean its not the best car out there, but for the price and for most people its all you'll need as a daily.
SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT!!!!! I had to thumb up your comment, because after owning my mk7 now for 5 months, I've been telling people this exact same thing now. This is the fwd 911, neither car is the quickest of class, neither is the best handling, nor the best braking, or looking, or, or, or.....BUT they are no QUESTION better at everything than any other car in the class. That is why they are sought after, and why they (along with the Miata) are perfect cars in my opinion, and incredibly hard to modify. Anything that you do to them potentially upsets the balance of that recipe.
Thank you for posting this as well, I'm in fact, not crazy haha.
Kamukix me too dude 2015 gti love it, does everything I want it to.
Black GTI with plaid seats and PP in on my wish list. Down the line, slap on a k04 and akrapovic exhaust if I work hard.
Does it not already come with a IHI turbo which is exactly the same size as the k04 turbo ?
Oh I didn't know that. Isn't the golf R turbo bigger?
jo23bulls
yeah the turbo on the r has a bigger turbo and other stronger internals parts.
+thug898 The turbo on the R has a bigger turbo? Bro, you know you're fast when your turbo has a turbo. lol just messin' with ya.
I own a 1991 Golf 1.6 which is quite rapid for what it is. But I drove this new Golf GTI VII (7) a month ago and well damn it.. Now my old Golf is useless in performance haha. This new GTI 7 is SOO fast. Really, if you are just watching video's, you have NO idea how this is. It feels a lot faster and nimble than my parents Audi A6 4.2 Quattro with 335hp.
"Quite rapid for what it is," is just another way of saying something is slow as hell but I don't want to admit it. Even the new GTI is a slow car!!! Certainly slower than all it's rivals, if you think it's that fast. I would love to see your face when you drove something that is ACTUALLY fast. Like a new Corvette lol.
I like your review .. own my MK7 for a year now .. and I love it!
I like how he refers to it as a 'gateway car'. I owned a MK5 and then MK6 and now have something else (VW CC) and just can't seem to get away from that car or wanting more (Golf R/S3/M235i/etc.). It makes other cars just feel so 'regular' and 'pedestrian' in comparison that anything short of something better in every single way (hard to come by) just won't do. I can't even force myself to find appeal in many other cars after having a modern GTI in my driveway for almost 8 years straight...
I purchased my MK7 back in July 2014 and have loved every minute behind the wheel. Had a issue with the turbo at 28k miles but it was covered. I love this car as much today as the day I got it. It’s so much fun to whip around in. Also, with two kids under 3yrs old, I feel it’s great for someone who enjoys driving, but still has to please their spouse (in the car department I mean 😅) It’s such an underrated car imo.
Beautifully filmed; a treat to watch.
Taking delivery of a Pure White, 3 Door, 6 Speed manual Mk7. I cannot wait, coming from an impreza WRX. The GTI has more usable power band, and the WRX felt very heavy.
What year was your WRX? The 2015+ WRX's are nice but a little more expensive than the GTI. Both cars come with very tunable twin scroll turbos which is great to have.
7.5 or 7? I have the 7.5
great vid man, how many days of rain do you guys get seems to always be raining
Looking forward to a Golf R review from you still!
Focus ST vs MK 7 GTI please? a track battle 2
Good review. Mk7 is athletic, refined, versatile and highly capable.
i ve 220cv for one year and it s really a great car but last week, went for stage 1, 305cv and 460nm, and now that s another level! it s like having a new car
All the newer Golf's are brilliant. I have a MK6 Wagon. With 18" wheels and performance tires and brakes, it is a riot to drive. With the 2.5, I'm guessing 7.5 sec 0-60 which seems slow these days, but is quite good for an Econo box wagon. I'd love a GTI w/ performance pack or even more so.....the R wagon, but we can't get in the states.
Yeah, I agree, the GTI is the car you can daily drive (for reasonable money) and flog around canyon roads on the weekend. Plus the level of fit and finish is superior, especially on the interior.
Love these reviews!
A great review , says it all how good the mark 7 is , love mine .
I had a mk 1 campaign edition in black. Great wee car with poor brakes. Then a mk 2 16v, which we kept for 8 years. Almost totally reliable and pretty quick at that time. My wifes had her r32 for nearly ten years and it has been outstanding. Not a gti, i know. I suppose they are my favourite all round cars. I go elsewhere but keep coming back....
My 2003 GTI VR6 hits 60 MPH in 6.5 seconds! I don't understand why current GTI's can't do that in about 5 seconds. One would think that a 2018 GTI, after 43 years of pedigreed evolution, would be able to!
I'll take a e63 amgS 4matic... 0-60 is 3.5... awd but 77% fixed rear... haul my stuff.. take it out to the track and dragstrip, then pick up the kids, pull up to expensive hotel and then a grocery store and hardware store, rain, snow...... and my god the soundtrack :D
If the MK7 GTI proves reliable and minimum maint....it will be a stellar car. very adaptable, capable of getting great gas mileage, capable of brisk acceleration, capable of great storage, ... understated stock looks that can be visually enhanced if desired.
Anyone know how the new Accord V6 will perform up against the new MK7 GTI or even the upcoming MK7 Golf R (300 hp)? (Please mention from a dig/roll race)
Hey buddy, I want your jacket. Where did you get it?
how much difference is there with the eco mode in terms of efficiency?
My god I can't wait to place my order.
Wish you could turn the stability control off. Thats is the only thing holding this car back
A good review. I like the fact that the car has bags of mid range grunt. I can't fault mine, particularly because it is good on uneven surfaces... a great little road car and that's it.
Great review!
Loved the review. Picking up my mk7 this week. have had 5 BMWs and two Saabs. First VW.
Just throwing this random one out here... anyone know the track playing during second half? Something I'd love to have blaring in my GTI... :)
Last GTI I drove was a '98 VR6 Drivers Edition and that was it for me. While the MK6 was a great car, these Gti's are getting really heavy and electronic infested. But hey, what isn't nowadays right? The Golf R looked really sexy at this year's Detroit auto show I gotta admit.
actually itsdown by two hundred lbs
jay czyzyk exactly, it's gotten lighter with this gen.
its probably the best frwd car for the money in terms of handling and comfort for its price
bloody hell your cameraman and editor does make it look sexy
That car is everything
Don't these have a double clutch transmission?
Yes dsg dual clutch it is great don't miss a manual tranny at all
I bought this car a months ago, I'm in love with it. my only complain is I could not go faster than 130mph there is a speed limiter at 4000rpm at 6th gear
Get your ECU reprogrammed. You will get 40+ hp and 60+ torque and the speed limiter is removed. A stage 1 GTI should be able to do 140-150mph. Stage 2 gets close to 160mph.
Do you recommend APR, Unitronic, or another brand?
Great review of the GTi...
I currently own a BMW 3 series 2013 328i and I do not why but I am contemplating getting this and trading my bmw.
because the GTI looks more aggressive and hatchbacks are cool.
i bet bro i seriously love this little car man
It's actually good fun. I came from the E-90 series 328i to this car and it was okay. Good fun, easy to drive. Not too hectic when you don't want it to be. Despite the two months that I've driven it, I'm still a little iffy about FWD versus RWD.
Sergio Corral please don't get it in red because it literally ruins the whole car.
I've always loved GTI's but now that I'm older (mid 30s) - I can't stand the boy racer image of these cars - and let's face it, compared to an M3 and rear wheel drive, it isn't as hot as the price and image makes it out to be. Then there's the looks - rather drab... and tartan seats on a car of that price? Really? Nah... maybe if I was 22... for now I'll take the grown up's status symbol ;)
Whats the manual like?
Gti or golf r. I don't ask this lightly. I know the R is faster but the gti is cheaper. I am really unsure about what I want next. I can buy the R but the payments wont be too fun. I just wonder if the R will be worth it. Love your reviews. I really do trust your opinion XCARFilms.
+dzeeeeko R all the way, I just bought a 2016 GTI and its a fabulous car'n all but with the ESP TCS not turn off able it bogs the performance significantly. If you've settled on a golf for sure then get the R or GTI Clubsport if your in Europe, as it will better put down the performance capabilities it has and be a funner daily.
The issues with the ESP/TCS being unfix-able even with a VAG-com will loose VW a lot of sales from people looking for a fun whip.
Ask yourself what you need the R for? Will you be taking it to a track frequently? Going to McDonald's and street racing with chavs every Friday night? Why pay more in total, more tax, worse on fuel etc etc. GTI is perfect all round, plenty of power, decent on fuel & affordable price tag.
Danaldo91 You have a very good point. That is why I decided to get the GTI. The GTI was much more affordable (saved quite a bit with all the mark ups on R's). I was able to test drive an R and GTI and for what I would do with it, the GTI did the work just fine. Didnt really need the extra power or AWD.
+dzeeeeko Decent! How are you finding it living with the GTI then? It's something I'm looking into very soon :)
+Danaldo91 Love it! the power is really good but what I love most is the fuel economy. Even after I drive it hard it gives me good returns! Amazing little car! Plan on going apr stage 1 soon! also looking into some rse10 wheels
Vw golf GTI mk 7.5 was the best golf ever made…. Then I get the MK 8 gti… what have you done vw ….. destroyed a brilliant car…… build quality is cheap…. And the dash feels like a Dacia ! Glad I got rid ! BMW for me now .
Handling? Understeer? I like the explanation behind why you would purchase this though.
Its a good afordable car? Why else also its very practical and has a good amount of hp
i drove the2015 when on sport mode the handling is on rails understeer is not prominant
I had a Golf GTI mk4 and I miss it!:(
Zayndi103 I miss my goldfish he drowned RIP tyson
I need this car in my life. I just can't decide between the 2 and 4 door.
If you are in the States and you want PP and DSG and Light package....good luck. Really wanted a 2DR...hard to find in GTI other than base model
I'm gonna go for the R, as fun as the GTI is.
What happened to the 3 door no one has a 3 door
Fucking Brits love that car! I think the Golf is the most popular car in Europe.
In fact the new golf gti has got a Seat badge. Leon cupra
mk1 golf gti is still cheaper and better looking and cooler and (arguably) more fun and appreciating in value and a lot lighter and need I say more? I like the mk7 but it stll isn't as good. They need to make it cheaper by making it more analogue, they need to make it lighter by removing what isn't strictly necessary (like the satnav which will inevitably become obsolete and have a stick on aftermarket one fitted to the windscreen anyway). If I were the engineer/designer, I'd start by making it all of these things. In short, I can't wait for the vw up gt
Fab review my parents own the mk6 GTI
bmw 1M is the perfect car i think..
The new one looks so shit though!
there is no new 1m
Pedro Macário You know damn well he ment the new M235i. lol smartass
It's not the same thing.. the 1m is a pure M model and only a few were produce. the m235i dispite beeing great or not is not the direct successor to the 1M
You still knew what he ment. So stop splitting hairs. lol
This shall be my next vehicle! Right after I pay this darn Wrangler off!
Golf Is King of Fun
Rather take Focus ST.. or Megan RS...
Ok.
+benzfen They're not as usable nor as comfortable.
Alex Serrano It really doesn't matter. The imperfections make this cars so enjoyable.
It is same with the life - when things are perfect soon they become boring :)
Why would anyone buy a GTI now that the new Leon Cupra with 280hp is available?
Its not in America
I'm sorry no one told you this, but you're missing a pedal.
If you've never driven a car with DSG, ur missing out.
Wouldn’t the Golf R be the car for those who want everything?
Omg
This guy here
I just wish they'd offer AWD or at least RWD. Where I live FWD just hinders
My first car❤
the 3 door looks much better. But i rather get an Audi A/S3
Hot hatch then surely you want a hot hatch? BMW M135i is not much more than this or even the Astra VXR now that's a real hot hatch.
I would take Skoda Octavia RS, cheaper, more practical and i think better looking. Golf GTI is for people with running shoes in combination with jeans and those wnb expensive watches.
Hatch more practical than sedan, don't get why people get that confused...
conza1989 the octavia is a hatch
Could you show me please? I've only seen sedan, is it a touring or an actual hatch? Very interested
Great car indeed. And the Performance Pack also adds an electronic LSD which is pretty nice! However, I'd go for the Astra VXR. Less good overall but it looks better and it's quicker.
Perfect car = 335i estate without flashy M options
what a review. !!
remove the background noises (in car cam) before posting the vid please...nice car though
It start to get boring, particularly the dash
I like the Golf GTI but after extra's it's price is very close to a BMW M135i which is like Alex said he'd prefer (which lets face it we all would) rear wheel drive and does 0-60 in less than 6 seconds.
135 loaderd is 52000not 28000
What? What country do you live in? In the UK a loaded M135i is not £52000.
us
Alex just doesn't want to admit that they aren't even comparable cars. 25k starting price in the US vs almost 50k. Not even in the same park.
+Alex Oliver yeah but the BMW doesnt have that big a boot has it?
all this would have been perfect is the focus ST were not made
it is enough for me..
but the insurance, thanks.
If they were less expensive they would dominate the streets !
The mk6 starts at 23ish. How much cheaper does it need to be?
Lenny Datello I'm assuming you live in the US like me. Internationally, they cost a buttload more. The MK6 started at £22,410, which is the rough equivalent of $37k. So yeah, kind of expensive at that price.
I wouldn't want one any cheaper. You get what you pay for with these cars and any cheaper is junk
Whats up with this guy and the hate on the MKIV?
Where i live, these things are every carjacker / thief’s dream.
Sadly.
You need to get out of Bradford!
Just a bit too ordinary looking.I realise VW have always made them understated. But that looks too much like the lower spec cooking versions.
no its not good enough for me..i cant put my 3 german shepherds in the back and you cant tow a horse box with it..thats why i drive a hilux ;-D
The quality of this video is horrendous
In not sure about the looks.. The previous gen was smooth and unique. This kinda looks like a cheap Audi, and i guess thats what it is? :(
Plaid seats--remind me of my pajamas
Lol only in America people were these kinda of pjs
you say the mkv was boring yeah right! the mkv gti vr6 was a fun car much better than the 2.slow turbo bull shit.
David Vega The VR6 is much slower that the new turbo cars...not sure why you think it's faster lol.
Because Ive seen some old Vr6 smoking the shit out of them! that is why.
David Vega Might want to look up the specs then lol.
some times is the driver dude is not just the car numbers aren't driving
David Vega Hey, you said the turbo was slow....I'm just telling you they're faster than the VR6. You can make excuses for driver skill and all that, but the turbo cars are faster vs the VR6's if you have the same skill driver.
According to your own review, the MK7 GTI was nearly perfect. Smart move mentioning the GTI in the title however, I'm sure it helps the view count.
Btw, loved you in Harry Potter. ;)
Watch "The Mk VII Volkswagen Golf GTI: Enough for you? -…" on RUclips
The Mk VII Volkswagen Golf GTI: Enough for you? -…: ruclips.net/video/q8QINLUJpYI/видео.html
If only it were reliable...
Would rather have a skoda octavia vrs
change that distorted sounding intro ffs
Perfect? ESP does not turn off 100%...
and thats a good thing considering all the young idiots driving this thing endangering others. Someone who wants to go to the track takes the R. the GTI is like the GT of hot hatches. And drifting is out of the question anyway because of fwd.
True, ESP turned completely off in a FWD hatch back doesn't really allow one to do much except wheel spin.
DPPremier Try the Focus ST, sure its not in RWD league but hats off to Ford engineers to make a FWD car drift like a RWD does, the Golf cant even dream of it
Sure the Drifting session is not best 4 teenagers, but all cars have enough stability control to hold on their own,the GTi is 2 strict, cuts Power and brakes inside front wheel
The Focus ST does the same but does it slowly with a mild drift and a loose end, its something that a real enthusiast can enjoy(like some one who really wanted a Beemer but cudnt afford 1), so it wont be as fast as a GTi on track but will be a whole lot fun, and its like 2000-5000 Euro cheaper than a GTi,much less expensive to service, got better engine note, decent practicality as well,
Golf GTi is a perfect car and nothing can come close 2 its perfection when it comes to ride, refinement, speed, economy etc but being perfect is sometimes BORING
jandj Godwin
I agree with most of what you said. Of course with a fwd car you can chose a set up which brings some rotation at corner entry or when you lift the throttle, but you won't be able to hold the drift angle with throttle like a rwd car. Other than that i fully agree.
DPPremier Yea thats what I meant, still its a lot of fun when the rear steps out and when TCS and SC is turned off the Focus ST makes us feel the natural balance of the chassis, The golfs natural balance might be awesome who knows, but the ST allows both, 2 b a hooligan or 2 be a Grand Tourer, the ST is like Jack of all trades but Master of none
Golf is like Master of traction, stability, speed but dope at fun, feel, drama, action
Its like the fastest FWD A-B car
Inside is look very nice , but come on out side is golf simple golf , why to give so much money to drive one car with same design of simple golf ? yes ofcourse is small car fast and bla bla bla , but when you will open the garage and you will look your car you will see one simple golf that is the design. i cant understand why they dont make new one sport design something to look more attractive?
I'm a Fan of the GTI but damn what ugly seats!
If you don't like the plaid, they have leather ones too.
This car needs a sheet metal makeover, it still looks like it did 15 years ago....c'mon!
I like it why change something that looks really great
And a 911 still looks like it did, don't mess with a great thing.
The original 911 looked like a VW bug...they dont look like that anymore. Plus this thing isnt a Porsche...its a Golf w/turbo.
The 911 still looks like a flattened Bug. The GTI, while not the best performance platform to start with, is and always has been ridiculously practical. Although they haven't always stayed as sporty (See MKIII and IV platforms) It is a great all around package so there is no need to change it much.
GTi is shoebox ugly and boring old design from the 90's...if that is what passes in Germany so be it...but I will never buy one.
Nice car but man those seats are ugly
Drab,overrated,expensive...still no match for the R! Reincarnate the MK1!!!!
bigger -heavier than mk1 =shit
VW = meh
GTI = :D meh
stopped watching when i noticed it was an auto, if you drive an automatic GTI; its not a GTI
..imo
It's not just an auto, it's dual clutch. It's got a manual gearbox which the car controls. I think it's ignorant for you to say it's not a GTI because of a transmission.
+Angus Wrightson true, people that haven't experienced dsg always think that it's a slow changing auto
akshaar ramsurwaj couldn't of said it better myself
+Angus Wrightson no matter how fast it changes gear, its still an entirely different experience from having three pedals
Obviously, there's two pedals instead of one. Doesnt mean it's going to be boring. Have you driven a dual clutch auto. If so you'll know that they are a lot more fun to drivr then a regular auto. Dual clutch acts so much like a manual transmission.
