I have friends or just folks I know who started playing guitar less than a year ago and some are already in metal bands. I started playing guitar many years ago and learned cowboy chords, bar chords, scales etc., it took me a long time. I was floored to see a guy playing in a band with very little experience. Now I get it, I can listen to what yours're playing in this lesson and repeat it with very little effort. I've never been a metal fan but can see how someone with limited playing ability can wow his friends with it. Amp, metal pedal and 1 finger, let's rock, lol. That being said, I can see how becoming great at metal is much deeper than it appears on the surface.
Yeah, a lot of the great songs are simple songs. But you can always go deeper. And there are some songs that sound simple until you start to learn them. For example, try playing almost any song by Chicago. Trying to translate that to guitar and still make it sound good can be a challenge.
@@jasonstallworth I agree 100%. Because I try to play every song I sing/play different than the original it's a bit easier and most non-musicians never know the difference. Make it my own, same as you tell your students. BTW, I just found you and I'm impressed with your teaching/playing. You try answer the next question without it being asked.
Simplicity is the key to brilliance-Bruce Lee. Love your tone man. Love the guitar as well. I love my cheapo LTD-V50 I've started with. I've been playing 4 years but my left hand(RIFF Hand) is semi disabled so my journey to learn how to play is much different than most. It took almost two years to be able to use my pinky finger and just recently I've been able to do more chords without a lot of pain. Thankfully my wife is a massage therapist so that has been a huge help. Enjoyed your lesson and I'll for sure be putting it into my mixing bowl of a brain and spitting it out my own way. SKAL Brother 🤘🤘
This is freaking Awesome. As a fifty something wannabee guitarist I love how you break down these amazing riffs so that I can understand them. Keep up the great work man.🤘🤘
My neighbors already think they are being invaded every evening when the Marshall fires up. Might as well be an viking heavy metal invasion!! Keep um coming Jason.
Also...totally agree and like that you don't just stay on the e string for the whole riff. Moving around keeps it sounding interesting and professional.
Hahaha, aww right. This is what I'm here for! Since everyone is mentioning how viking they are. My familiy in UK are from Lindisfarne (the first place the 'kings landed). Blue eyed, Red bearded and all that good stuff. Great video Jason! I still listen to the CD you sent in the competition btw, It's great man.
Jason, yours is the best YT guitar channel there is. I just love how you encourage to be creative, and with covering songs - I always say that rather than learning tabs and playing exactly how it's done in the original song, it's better to do your style of it by ear👍👂
Thank you very much, Jason. Your video is full of simple, but very useful ideas. However, notwithstanding of their simplicity, they require a good teacher (such as you) to uncover and describe them.
Youre so right about covers or tributes.... Dats already recorded so people better play their own version of the song or better yet create an original thing wich is way more difficult
@@jasonstallworth awww man you are very welcome!! I know you appreciate it🤘😁👍 I really appreciate you and everything you do! If it wasn't for you and all your awesome video lessons and Metal Riff Master i would not be playing what i love!! KEEP IT METAL!!!🤘
Awesome riffages!! And great advice to make everything one learns their own; when I first started playing my older cousin gave me that same advice, and it has really helped me over the years to develop my own sound and style that's inspired by, rather than mimicking my favorite bands. You are a real blessing to the guitar community Jason! I've been playing since '91, but I never cease to learn new licks and riffs from your videos that inspire me to play and spark my own creativity. Thanks brother!
@@jasonstallworth I got my first guitar in 89! I used it as a prop for jamming air guitar in the mirror hahahaha. Then in late 90 I finally learned a few fingerings, and decided that a cheap Harmony was not conducive to learning, compared to my friends squier.... So I sold my prized Honda 200M three-wheeler and bought a MIJ Fender Stratocaster in early 91. Then it was non-stop learning, playing, and acquiring more gear. My parents were very supportive after seeing that I was serious about the instrument. Since then I've had well over 100 guitars - through buying, selling, and trading. My current collection (40+) is the biggest I've ever had at once, because I quit selling and trading and have been hoarding for the past 15 years or so. I love guitars and gear so much, it's like an addiction. This past year I started modding and building from scratch, and this process has taught me so much about guitars that I was ignorant of...it's deepened my passion for the instrument immensely... Its inspiring to watch your channel and see your passion for the instrument, and reading the comments from other guitarheads. We're all on a lifelong pursuit to keep it METAL!!
That was pretty sweet Jason, loved the riff. The gallop really adds some nice flavour. I sometimes throw in the gallop when noodling around. Thanks for the drum tips at the end, looking to get some drum software soon. Also, as others have said, lots of great content coming through so thanks man. Keep it metal 🤘🎸🤘🎸

@@jasonstallworth This is most excellent! I’ve just joined and downloaded the guide. Thank you very much! Loving the channel and your albums. Devon will soon be awakened with the sound the most brutal Odin summoning riffs 🤘🏻
Nice! What I needed to put my last weeks practice of subdivision alternate picking of doubles, triplets and hand syncronicising into "real" playing. For a month ago I would have been struggling big time with this one. Nailed it almost instantly. Nice riff and lick there. The lick uses the same notes as in "Rodeo" with Pretty Maids btw. Greeting from Norway. Keep it metal!
Yep dude, we're all Vikings! And thank you! I went back to doing more of these lesson-style videos. I'm not sure what happened but the channel has a bit more life now, but I really attribute that to you and all of the folks here! Man, reading through the comments makes me grateful...we just have an extremely cool group of quality folks here!
I cannot reproduce your cool metal sound from my Marshall mg102gfx amp, I tried all possible settings.... do I need another amp for that, or replace my cheap electric guitar for something more sophisticated?
I've never played through that amp before. But I wouldn't worry so much about getting a particular tone as long as you can dial in one that sounds great to you. I recommend folks focusing more on their practice sessions. A lot of the tone will come through the way you play as you grow as a guitarists.
Get a "Zoom G1 FOUR Multi-effects Processor" for like US $90.00 from Sweetwater and run it through the front or the Effects Loop of that Marshall, you should be able to find a good Metal sound. The Zoom has Drums and a Looper too.
I don't usually keep these tracks but I've thought about opening up a VIP membership where backing tracks can be downloaded. I do offer backing tracks with the 80 lessons in my Metal Riff Master course: www.jasonstallworth.com/courses/
That's pretty cool. I don't get into modern metal a lot. But that's not bad at all. My biggest knock on modern metal is that it seems to be rythmic and not as melodic. But in this I can see tons of room to make something really melodic and cool
I totally hear you on that! And I think a lot of that has to do with the over-production and over-polishing that's done on modern records. The earlier stuff had a more organic and lively vibe.
