Not listened to them for a while actually but definitely one of my favourite bands, along with Arch Enemy and Opeth they got me into melodic death metal. The Gallery was a fantastic album and Lethe one of my favourite songs from it. Theres an old live video of them (can watch on RUclips) where they play it with so much emotion. A lot of Opeth songs have some awesome basslines too - it may not be a metal album but Damnation sounds great and the bass tone is lovely. Just feels so good when it kicks in on Hope Leaves. I'm a long-time drummer and been trying to learn guitar for the last year or so but I have absolutely no experience with bass. But watching guys like Dann, Davie504 and Charles Berthoud does inspire me to give it a go sometime. Slap bass looks really hard though!
@@dreammachine86 Opeth aren't, and never have been, a melodic death metal band. I hate this revisionist history that modern fans keep on applying to Opeth's older music, and it needs to stop. Having melody in your death metal doesn't automatically make you a melodeath band. They were a progressive death metal band, even on the fringes of prog black metal on their first 2 albums, before just becoming a prog rock band. The melody in melodic death metal strictly comes from NWOBHM, whereas Opeth's melody came from a whole host of different genres and influences, but largely from prog rock. There's a significant difference between Opeth's music and that of Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, Carcass, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, or The Black Dahlia Murder, who all have fairly distinct sounds, but their melody all comes from one place.
@@metalswifty23 Yes looking back at my comment I would agree, Opeth are a prog metal or a prog rock band. Not intentionally trying to be 'revisionist' though, maybe some people are, but it was just easier to say melodeath to group them in with other bands that got me into heavier forms of metal but still had an 'accessible' melody to their music. I'm guessing the melody you refer to from the NWOBHM is the Aeolian mode/natural minor. Although some bands take it darker with the harmonic minor - Punish my Heaven by Dark Tranquility is one of my favourites. Opeth have so many different inspirations for melodies and rhythms, many that I would have no reference for. Especially their latest prog rock stuff as I haven't listened to much of the classic prog rock that seems to be one of Mikael's current inspirations. The lead melody at the start of Serenity Painted Death always sounded very exotic and unusual - in a nice way - to me, like it had the uplifting sound of a major scale but the mysteriousness of a minor scale. When I started getting into guitar I looked up the tab and realised its actually a major lick played into a minor lick in the same position - making an interesting group of 3 chromatic notes in the overall lead line. And that's just one little melody in one of their many songs, some of which are very long!

Been playing bass religiously for the past 8 months . It has helped me in so many ways . All different styles and approaches . All to say Tool's bass lines are the one PT of the band which truly captivates me . So many band mates and peers I've had always looked at me cross 👀👁️ 👁️ for not caring for Tool .I hear where you're coming from . However honestly I think they resemble a more a progressive version of Soundgarden ( guitar wise at least ) than they ever would anything from Pantera - Iron Maiden and every Heavy Metal style in between. Including the more extreme sub genres . I also prefer bassist whom play finger style as well as pick usage . Dude is an excellent bassist . In that he adds tremendously to the groove of the song ( which is bassist true job / being the man to connect the drums to every other facet of the band ) . He also adds in the way of melody here and there without drawing an over abundance of attention to himself . For this reason alone I force myself to study his bass lines . Good retort to my original comment bro .

Uggggh Lethe is so cool. Never realized that part was all on bass. Now I want to learn this
Nice bass
Súper glad you had Lethe in there. Underrated song for a very underrated and under appreciated band
Nice list! I would only add Souls of Black (the re-recording version) to it. But it is great nevertheless!!
No more tears in aguard....
Congratulations to setlist.... 👏👏👏
Damn I'm surprised to see Symphony X in there! Great choices!
Yout bass and your playing are awesome !!
No More Tears isn’t particularly complicated, but if you’re talking about greatest metal intros it has to be on a list. Easily one of the most iconic bass lines in all of metal.
I don't know it, by who?

Glad to see you added the iconic Brr Brr Deng intro
Sick bass guitars!
That is most likely the best looking bass I have ever seen.
Very good job needless to say . I never considered Tool a Heavy Metal . To me they were an artsy progressive band . This takes nothing away from your playing . It speaks for itself.
Thanks a lot for your kind words! 🙏
Yeah I don't think you would call tool Heavy Metal, they're definitely Prog and Artsy, but i would argue their roots are totally metal, songs like Ticks and Leeches really show that in my opinion
@@questionablekortex3191 Yes , I hear you man . I've been a huge Heavy Metal Fiend since childhood . Eventually became a musician . Recorded and performed for everything To Death Metal , Thrash Metal , Speed Metal etc and oldschool east coast style Hardcore ( Madball , Agnostic Front , Down to Nothing , Terror style ) .
I always thought of them as alt metal
@@Happylink75 I'm assuming you're a fan . I suppose you could use that subgenre category . I will say their bassist creates some very catchy , heavy and memorable bass lines. Musically they're very tight. Maynard will sings behind and in front of the beat . Obviously to offset the music . Which has influenced thousands of musicians.
Awesome and nice ending with Wrath Child !
Loads of great stuff. Just wondering why "Relentless mutation" by Archspire is not in this video. One of the most compelling bass into to a tech death song.
Lethe sounded great - always been a big fan of that song - thank you!!
Also, No More Tears and Would.
great video, anfd thanks for adding some dark tranquillity.
Dude what kind of bass is that? It's gorgeous tonally and aesthetically
That's an Achilles by Overload Guitars 🔥
After this video my respect for bassist increased. I didn't even knew that basses had chords! Amazing.
Awseome job man, love how Symphony X riffs were like "I'm not repeating that riff" 😅 Also dig the tone, right up my alley
Well, definitely subbed. Had some of my favorites on here, but then you pulled Soen out and that’s when I said “yep gotta sub now.”
BRR BRR DENG
Domination is the one that still blows my mind.
This video was sick, incredible. The sound you have is amazing, you rock. The bass are just pieces of art.
Wow, thanks!
thanks for posting the tabs in there as well! the intro to phobophile by cryptopsy is also a great one
