They treated Staley like trash over his addiction. It’s disgusting.
I agree, completely! The stigmas of drug addiction, because of the media, began to overshadow his "godlike" talent. By the time of his death, it was all people were focused on. SO SAD!
Yes. He was still a person and all the focus was on the bad and the addiction. It was heartbreaking how it tore him down and hurt his life. There was so much more to him.
❤️❤️❤️
A lot of addicts are chastised by the public. People don't understand .... even those who are able to be empathic
@RebelGodessRed90 Layne Staley was a deeply intelligent, sad, confused about this "rat race" society runs around in, and too good for this rotten, secpool of a world. So talented: be it musician, lyricist, or poet; yet never really had a chance (& I'm not speaking about the drug use).
I agree 😢it is disgusting. He was too special for this world
Thank you for sharing that image! Drives me crazy when I constantly see "he had no teeth!" spammed in unplugged comments, you can even get glimpses of his teeth in the unplugged show. I’m sure they weren’t in good health and he was self conscious about them but he definitely wasn’t missing all his teeth or close to it like a bunch of these people say. Irritates me when I see comments like that with hundreds of upvotes, always try to correct them but it’s no use.
Yes you can see that he had teeth, but the Nona Tapes reveal that his teeth were already looking messed up by ‘95, and suggest that he probably was self-conscious about them (on several occasions he appears to either hide his smile with a hand or to deliberately hold back from a full smile or laugh, likely to not show his teeth)
He lost teeth after he left the public eye. There is a picture of him taken the last time he was in the studio at Jerry's house. This is where the rumor came from. He has an obvious sunken mouth and looks old. It was due to his drug use. People can go grey and lose their teeth in a matter of a couple of years like this. The picture was confirmed to be him and honestly looks like him. A very fragile and sick him.
Look up the two last songs him and Jerry worked on for more information.
Yeah fr. He had teeth, they just werent kin the best shape due to lack or care and drug abuse. Mine are the sane as Layne's were when he passed. In the video for get born again and the Brick in the Wall cover, he was missing substantial portions of teeth to the point of lisping and such. Im very self conscious over my teeth as well as my wife. Some teeth are gone completely( broke to the gum)
He was missing SOME teeth when making the tripod album, which was well before the unplugged show which was in 1996, not 1993
he was found with no teeth. idk why they mix it up all the time.
So many asshats on the interwebs. So much jealousy. Layne was a genius and one of the most talented vocalists of all time. Thank you for setting the record straight here.
Couldn't have said it better myself! The only thing I would add is: not only was he one of the greatest singers of ALL TIME, but Layne Staley was also one of the greatest poets of our time.
I think Layne had more teeth than me lol. Don't know about in the end though but Layne was & still is THE MAN regardless of how many teeth he had.
🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
People try to bash Layne while praising Kurt shooting up needles in front of his daughter like wth is this world coming to
I'm so glad you posted this and I agree with you 100%. People need to love one another. Until those haters out there are perfect the need to shut the hell up.
💯 percent 🎤🎤 drop
I love how much you cover Alice in Chains and how fantastic Layne Staley's voice was..... Love Hate Love live at the Moore is my favorite.
@@julzstaley3178 Yes! The whole show's fantastic even songs like 'real thing' shows what different things Layne could do with his voice and do it so effortlessly
Layne may be gone (for 20 years now) but his voice will cry & scream out forever in that most unique way that we so fondly remember when we think of him & AIC. His voice will be incredibly highly esteemed for uncalculated lifetimes into the future I'm sure of it.
The David De Sola biography does mention that he had a set of dentures ( but I think that was more in his isolation years) I guess it's quite possible he could have been wearing them. But hearing many stories about the condition of his teeth during the MTV performance the one that feels the most accurate to me, is that it was around then that he started losing them. So not complete loss but enough loss to affect a lisp in his singing, which you can both hear and detect by the way he would change the way the way he drop the S in certain places. You can also see him run his tongue over them certain areas in an anxious way, like the absence was bothering him. So am element of truth I guess but also a story that run wild with gossip. Either way his condition was heartbreaking
Most of those claims are bullshit. Love Hate Love there is several reasons why they didn't use it in 96 unplugged. 1. It takes a lot of power and energy. He lacked that clearly in 96 still sounded great but his grit was lighter which actually worked better for acoustic music.
2. The song is too hard-core for acoustic sound. I love that song but I honestly believe if they played that song in unplugged it would be so drastically different from live at the Moore it would create more hyperbole.
And I'm pretty sure Jerry Cantrell said they didn't have enough time on set to have done Love hate love
What about Man in the Box? Leave out some of your bigger hits to play two very average songs for the Layne Era? Jerry knew it and Layne knew it. Those songs would have not worked for the situation.
Layne still had the same power in his voice but Love Hate Love is a very loud song so they decided not to use it.
They didnt use Love Hate Love because they didnt use any Facelift song. Not even MITB. Simple.
I personally love singing this song. Especially on those fucking days that you just want to vocalize the pain away
The photo is not from the mtv unplugged. Some of the videos are here on YT and yes you can see he had lost a couple of tooth and was high as a kite but if you ask me I think those was one of his best performance ever. Rest easy Layne.
Layne didn't have teeth leading up to his death, which is probably why people say that about the 96 Unplugged show. People seem to forget he died six years later.
People also say it was his last ever show eith Alice in Chains and that "he's singing at his own funeral." Dude replapsed that year and was very much dope sick, but he wasn't near death, or "singing at his own funeral." And he still had his teeth.
They are probably conflating stories. The truth is that by the time of the last few songs he recorded such as brick in the wall for the faculty movie he was missing most of his teeth and it gave him a lisp on certain words so they had to go back in and doctor it
That image wasn’t from unplugged . It was from the letterman show when they performed And we die young and Again. But you’re right he had his teeth in both performances and nailed them both to.
Read the caption above the Letterman pic!
@@CrazySinging Then why did you say it was from unplugged? Probably shouldn’t get so butthurt from a comment. I actually agreed with you.
@@tjm8128 He wasn't butthurt at all, goofball
@@CrazySinging We’re supposed to read the small print, 2-line caption that flashed on the screen for a half second?
You said “MTV performance” and then showed the picture. Just take the L on this. It’s misleading and most people watching don’t realize that the photo isn’t from the Unplugged show.
@@subterraneanretrogames556 Thank you. I really wanna like this dude because he does so much about Layne but I can’t stand people who can’t admit when they are wrong. Like def noodles.
Probably the most tragic story in music, tortured soul as a lot talented artists are especially from that era
KING Layne Staley!!
I wish everybody would leave Layne alone😕😕 he was a awesome guy and whether he had teeth or not in the end was irrelevant he was a perfect singer no matter what♥️❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I love him forever 💖😢
Love Hate Love is a really intense tune. Like the first half would be great acoustic, but I think the back end with the long vocal parts towards the end would be a little weird without the crunchy electric guitar in the background. Maybe just me.
I believe he was self conscious about being able to hit and sustain notes that high and that’s why they didn’t do love hate love or man in the box. Not his teeth although they were decaying quite badly by all accounts
Well believe this or not. . Say he did wear a Denture. Maybe he was afraid that his upper Denture might Literally fly out of his mouth. With such high vocals as Layne had it diffently would or could happen.
Years working in the Dental field making Dentures.. .I'm now sitting here thinking hummm I dont think I know a professional singer that wears Dentures 🤔 now we have implants ... so money was not the object here. And you can also sit here and say 2 yourself if my teeth did fly out while singing that would be the only thing that people would ever remember it's sad but:-( and that is probably what Layne was terrified about .
And in saying this I don't know why they didnt perform love hate love at the MTV show. RIP Sweet Layne
Thank you! So many want to trash Layne. He was missing some teeth; but he was never "toothless".
Even if he was " toothless" i wouldn't give a shit. He still one of my favorite singers. Rock in power brother Layne.
I just don't understand why it matters so much ~
Layne Staley and Chris Cornell are the 2 best voices in rock I'm my opinion. Layne has one of the strongest voices I ever heard
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IN YOUR OPINION.
If people looked in to this more, the was some very good editing done when the camera was near layne’s face during that performance.
There were some blackout/darkened edits added to the area where his top teeth are/were when he was singing with his mouth opened at certain angles. If you look closely, you’ll notice
No, that was just the natural shadow of his face. He had all of his teeth 🤦♀️
@@TheStepmonkeyGet Glasses!
He didn't start to lose his teeth til after late 96 or 97.. His vocals just weren't as strong as they had once been bc he hadn't performed in awhile.... The only songs he had trouble with was Born again, Died and Another brick in the wall.
That comment is literally dumb bc his mouth was open for other songs....
You're 100% correct. 🎯
The media cowards drove that man into the grave. They never could give him a break. The questions stopped being "how do you sing like that?" Into "what drugs are you doing tonight because you're a mess?" Layne would actually record behind a wall where no one could see him hit those amazing notes.
It had nothing to do with his teeth tho
@@clintmullins8670 it did lmao
No not really. He drove himself there. And if anything, his long time gf dying drove him to the grave
Teeth or not..still the most powerful voice on the planet..sorely missed
Gone too soon
This is partialy true. During MTV performance you can spot that he lacks a couple of teeths. Not all like some claim but like 2 or 3.
Yeah, you can hear that he's missing a few, but not all
No, at that point his teeth just had a bit of wear and decay. He only lost some teeth around 1998 and onwards.
@@TheStepmonkeyayne was missing 1 of his left top molars during his performance on Letterman
I think he didn't want to sing love hate love because its an insane vocal. And due to his condition, he wouldn't have been able to hit the notes
Thanks for this video. Honestly I don't get why people are so desesperate to say: "Oh yea, Layne had no teeth." Like, who cares? People should remember him for his talent and not for his addiction.
He actually had lost most of his teeth at one point. Even depth documentaries go over it.
..would it have mattered Even If he didn't have teeth?!?LET THE MUSIC&SOUND SPEAK FOR THEMSELF?!?
Jerry Cantrell said in several interviews, that Layne had his teeth removed prior to unplugged, and that Layne thought the band would be mad with him, because he sounded different without teeth
Can you paste some links where he talks abot that?
@@wrektalica ill see if I can find it. Was only a couple weeks ago I watched the video
That is very interesting, would like to hear that interview.
Please post the link I definitely want to see the interview or whenever Jerry said that
@@clintmullins8670 I've never read or heard this. I think it's bullshit. You can clearly see during unplugged he had teeth. And you can tell it's not dentures.
I hate that whenever Layne is discussed his addictions are a central theme of the discussion. He was so much more than the prototypical junkie rockstar. He was a man who could reach peoples soul with his voice. He was a son, a friend, a cultural icon. And more than anything he was a great dude with a great heart. Whenever Alice was doing a show he would walk around outside the venue and find fans who couldnt afford to get in and give them tickets and, consequently, a life long memory to go with it. Take away all the music, fame and riches and he still left a more positive imprint on the world than most, even in his relatively short time, simply by treating everyone with kindness and friendship. I wish his legacy revolved more around all of that than it simply being boiled down to a cautionary tale. Were selling not only him, but outselves, short if that is all we gleaned from the life of Layne Staley.
1991 Alice in chains was absolutely epic! They opened for Metallica, Slayer, Testament, megadeath, and anthrax. At probably the greatest concert I've ever attended. Lane was incredible...
tell us abt his voice please
Love Hate Love is an amazing song and one of my favorites off of Facelift (though it changes a lot bc that album is absolutely perfect lmao), but it just wouldn't make sense for them to play it during the unplugged. It's an extremely powerful song and while acoustic songs can be powerful, it's a different kind of powerful that would clash with it. Even if the instrumentals were fine, the belting in that song probably would've clashed too much for it to work. I love the song, but it wasn't meant to be acoustic, I think it'd just take away the impact of it. If they had played it, I'm sure it'd be a different story and a jaw-dropping performance, but I'm trying to imagine it working and I'm not really seeing it. Plus you can literally see his teeth during the show, but people just can't get enough of those fake internet points I guess 🤷♂️
Yeah we get it, he wasn't well, but most people don't die slowly from heroin and crack addiction... He still sang perfectly till the end, hitting all the notes and harmonies. Anyone can forget the words to their songs that's why everyone uses teleprompters now. AIC unplugged was the best one imo and the bar was already set high. He just wasn't the same after losing Demri and sadly gave up. RIP Layne
Forget about the teeth he's got ballz which most haters obviously don't have... Long live Layne..
love hate love is too hard of a song for acoustic, mtv wanted it to be more popular or softer songs and at the time love hate love wasn’t their most popular, also jar of flies had just released and they wanted to push that album to be dominant
Jar of Flies had not just released. That EP dropped in 94’. It was their self
Titled album that had just dropped. Hence songs like Sludge Factory from that album were played on Unplugged:
I can't see Love Hate Love being performed at Unplugged. I'm not sure Layne had the power to pull it off.
What...?
Also read hus dental records where how they could definitively id him
I remember seeing that they didnt played love, hate, love because they didnt have time
Because lies always looks like truth 🧑🏽🎤
Honestly, I saw a clip of one of the very few shows that they did for the three legged dog covered album; it was daytime and outside, and you can see that his teeth are looking pretty awful.
I had perfect teeth well into my 30's, but then I got randomly jumped by a crazy person who thought that I was someone else that owed him money. He came running up out of an alley from behind me and tackled me, then when I rolled over, started kicking my face. Luckily, some people that knew him were nearby and came and stopped him, because I think he was going to kill me.
But the attack broke chips into my four top front teeth...and apparently out shatters through almost all of the rest.
Seemingly out of nowhere, I noticed that I was getting gum plaque, and one of them cracked in half.
I went and got the four front ones fixed, and intend to fix the rest as well, but it's so expensive and time consuming, and not covered by my insurance.
I know Layne could have afforded to fix his, but when he lost Demri, his heart broke and he started dying. That's what Mark Lanegan and most of his other close friends say.
Even more than addiction, I chalk a lot of his up to just deciding not to take care of himself anymore. He had given up.
He barely had any teeth. He was very self conscious. As a former drug addict I've been through a lot of these same issues. The shameful remnants of teeth after drug addiction can't be understood by counting letters or doing math. As your body wastes and rots away, it makes it much easier to cope with impending death. John Frusciante is a good example of a person who lost it all and came back. If u look at his arms it becomes apparent how bad it got for him. It took him 20+ years to stop wearing only long sleeve shirts on stage.
Voce superlativa
If he was self conscious about his teeth he had more than enough money to fix them believe me he didn't give a fuck
Black and white thinking is never correct (get it? Lol). I've been an addict. Saying "he didn't give a fuck" about his teeth probably isn't the case. It's usually the "giving a fuck" that leads one to use more because of the shame.
Look in the mirror, see the effects of my disease, down my sorrows in my illness just so I don't see.
@@scottmatznick3140 he was a million air he could of fixed his teeth on a lunch break the go back to drugs that's the difference
@@Therealgeoffchildsit's not really like that. If you were using all time you don't feel any pain till it's an abscess. That can spread to your jaw and then they can't even make dentures if you're whole mouth is infected. He was probably seeing a dentist as well, I doubt they just fell out.
@@agdgdgwngo Nah, Layne could've gotten veneers if he really wanted 🤷♀️
@@Therealgeoffchilds unfortunately the life of an addict isn't as simple as that. Drugs is all you think about & even though he had the money to get them fixed you just procrastinate. At the end of the day Layne made some of the best songs that we still have today. It seems rather pathetic that so many people want to focus on his teeth when there was a beautiful human who was slowly dying before our very eyes. Rest in eternal peace Layne & thanks for the great music . Best wishes from Ireland 💚🤍🧡🇮🇪 peace
Idk when he lost his teeth but I remember hearing from Jerry or one of the people working on recording of get born again n died he was a little self conscious about the lisp it caused at the time and you can clearly hear his lisp in get born again . Could be people mixing it up 🤷🏻♂️
RIP LAYNE!!!
Bro you aint slick. That quick pic you flashed, those are his gums.
He of had his teeth but he was for sure fucking blasted on H before he walked out in for nutshell
If u watch one of the documentary’s the tooth thing is about the last song he recorded and he was missing them in the recording
1996 MTV show? In 93 they were in their prime and they did not do MTV unplugged until 1996...
Not to be rude or anything, but are you sure this is an image from the unplugged? Layne never wore a beanie or a leather jacket during unplugged, he was wearing an all black outfit and even had pink dyed hair. At the time, he was missing his top 2 front teeth, even causing a bit of a lisp when he pronounced his s sounds during a performance. The MTV unplugged set was also purple with a darker environment, and not red with a bright environment. If you don't believe me you can lookup "MTV Unplugged Nutshell", which has Layne walking on stage right before the lyrics start showing that he never wore a beanie or had any jacket for the entirety of the performance.
I loved Layne no matter what shape his teeth were in, he was a master at vocals. However, I dont understand why he didnt pay to have his teeth repaired or replaced. He certainly had the money, all though he did blow alot of it on drugs. But he wasnt broke by any means. Tells me he just didnt give a shit anymore.....
Layne was a recluse. He had severe social anxiety and major depression. He struggled getting out for basic needs, let alone stuff like dental visits. It's easy to let shit slide when you don't see yourself as someone who matters.
Layne didn’t really lose all of his teeth until around 1998.
that picture is not from the unplugged!! Did he have teeth I don't know but I do know he killed it that night!!
Layne was a video game addict also, his final days were just getting high an playing games in his apartment
Every artist you’ve ever loved had addictions. Metallica. All fuckin high on drugs. The Beatles. All fuckin high on drugs. All your favorite rappers. All fuckin high on Xanax and cough syrup. Need I continue? They’re allll high
But this image of layne isnt from the mtv unplugged session?
I just watched a clip from a show they did in Michigan 96. There hard to see but he’s got teeth, terribly rotten but he still sounded amazing!
I wish they played rotten apple
That image isn’t from the MTV show?
That image wasn’t from the live mtv unplugged set dude
I have one minute stood from lify
Maybe in Get Born Again you can hear it
That image you showed as proof looks like the wrong performance. He had pink hair for the unplugged and no hat. Really it does not matter he rocked out that performance!
He was toothless when he worked on the Pink Floyd cover song
That image isn’t from mtv unplugged
That pic isn't from the MTV unplugged set. Just sayin'.
I don’t think this photo is from 1996. It is from 92 at the Whisky a GO GO I think.
His upper teeth were absolutely mostly gone at the '96 show. He had dentures that fit poorly and would've slipped out had he really tried to belt out a song.
He had nearly all of his top teeth. He was only missing 1 molar in 1996.
I know, I saw it, he definitely had minimal teeth by this time!
That pic with teeth and from the unplugged show he had pink hair at that show and no teeth at all really by that point
HEY THATS MY REDDIT POST! 😁
:o
Legend
Love Hate Love would not have worked in the unplugged setting. Layne was way more than his addiction and he shouldn’t be remembered solely for his addiction.
Before lane passed he had lost teeth, I do not know how many, what I do know the last two songs he recorded "Get born again and died he had to record multiple times to make sure the s's were correct.
This is documented, I am a BIG Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Layne Stayle fan, I was born the same day as year as Layne.
It's sad but the drugs did damage to Layne, his body, and his health.
It's sad that people want to say things they know nothing about, they are trying to destroy his reputation, it's up to all of us as fans to tell the truth about him, the good and the bad.
He only lost his teeth very late in the scene. You can hear his lisp on his cover of PF another brick in the wall they for the faculty movie. It's very pronounced on that track.
It was not layne in the unplugged, it was a grey alien in a body suit
People are so obsessed with his downfalls and addiction it’s ridiculous like he’s so much more than his bad habits
That image is not from MTV Unplugged tho
Towards the end he had a lot of teeth missing, gradually they started falling off overtime. late 2002, weighing damn near 100LBS maybe soaking wet.
None of these images were from unplugged
JERRY USED LAYNE'S ADDICTION FOR HIS OWN PERSONAL FAME!! LISTEN TO THE LYRICS...MOST SONGS ARE ABOUT ASKING FOR HELP!!😢
I think I AND A WOULD EXPOSE THE MOUTH MORE!
this is not a picture of him from Unplugged.
Read the caption above it
Layne did wear gloves to cover his teack marks
I wouldn't doubt that he knew he was on the verge of losing his teeth. But I believe his teeth started to fall out sometime after Demri Parrott's death in 1996 and before they recorded Died and Get Born Again in 1998
Let me sleep so my teeth won’t grind!
Love hate Love is not an unplugged song. That is the most powerful AIC song ever made. He crushes any singer in history in its video. No one could stand with Layne.
Wasn’t the mtv show in 96 not 93 tho?
Your picture wasn’t from the 96 show.
Layne’s voice wasn’t nearly as powerful as it was years prior to unplugged. If you listen to their last shows a few months later, you can understand why they decided not to play man in the box and other tracks on Facelift.
He could have literally walked into a dentist office the day before the performance and came out with a whole new set of teeth. If anything it was the disease f addiction that held him back from that.
layne definitely did end up losing most of his teeth by the end, that is a fact
It's not an unplugged type of song.
Aic unplugged was the best MTV unplugged ever
None of the shown images is from the unplugged concert. Stop spreading BS
He had his teeth but that’s when he started losing them. I’m pretty sure even when he passed he still wasn’t all gums.
He started actually losing teeth in about like 1997 or 1998, probably lost his molar teeth first. Then by 2000 he had quite little left and what was left were rlly bad. Im sure by 02 he had none. Take care of yer teeth yall!
At the end of life he barely had teeth. He had teeth in 96
Love hate love just isn’t a good pick for an acoustic show. It’s heavier than Angry Chair and I’ve always thought that wasn’t the best choice either.
