It's such a shame AiC is so underrated. Layne Staley's vocals were just unwordly.
AIC isn't underrated at all
@@codymccracken9813 i think he means "underpopular" if that makes sense LOL
not unpopular either lol
Not underrated. They were very popular, they just couldn’t capitalize. They were supposed to tour with Metallica and later Kiss. They couldn’t do as many records as they should have. Laynes addiction handicapped them, but take nothing away his voice is awesome and he is by far my favorite singer.
And unfortunately a lot of people don't like AIC because of the nasally vocals
Frustrates me
Gives me chills, laynes voice was unmatched
It was until Brendan Maier came.
Every time. There is no one like him.
Best grunge singer ever, in my book.
Layne was a beautiful soul, Tortured but beautiful ❤️
I wish more ppl would recognize Laynes talent. And the kicker of it all is that he never took serious vocal lessons or anything, he always did it so effortlessly. ❤️❤️
Wrong. Layne took lessons with Maestro David P. Kyle when he was young (He Also taught Chris Cornell)
I don't know anyone that has heard his music didn't recognize his talent...
I don’t think the number of people who recognize his talent adds to or takes away from your appreciation of it. So long as I get to listen, I don’t care who else does.
good to see him getting recognition these days, I was a teenager in the 90's and couldn't understand why nirvana was so popular and chains were more fringe, at least where I was anyway, chains were the best and layne is in my top two vocalists next to jeff buckley.
Where abouts where you based then I’m curious ?
I've wondered that exact same question. I was in my 20s in the 90's might be how they were marketed.
Mercury can’t touch Layne Staley. There I said it!
You're right and I'm a big Freddie Mercury fan
RIP Layne. Bloody unique voice and gone way too young.
Layne's voice is like the best I ever heard. I love him. ♥️🙏🏾
I wish I was born in this era so I could witness some of these absolute legends that were taken to soon
Layne Staley - I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard him. I am hippy chick from the 60’s and I’ve seen a LOT of great bands, performers and singers but NONE affected me like Layne. The harmonies he had with Jerry were PERFECTION. AIC will always be my fav band & Layne my fav singer / writer. Damn I miss him. 💔
Lane Staley was amazing. Just listen to Facelift, and Dirt... unbelievable vocal performances... a couple of stand alone lines on Facelift were just unbelievable...
In an ideal World, we’d get to see Layne’s singing from the very very beginning when he first started, even before Sleze, and watch it progress to what it became in the 90s. His voice transformed multiple times during his singing career (pre AIC/ Facelift / Dirt / Mad Season / brief return to AIC / Died, Get Born Again, Class of ‘99 - all feature a different version of Layne’s voice)
There should be an analysis of his vocal change and evolution
I freaking absolutely ADORE this man and I wish he was still with us. EXTRAORDINARILY TALENTED singer. I love his voice and no one can touch it. I miss you Layne. Seriously and dearly, however, your music lives with me daily. ❤❤
Yes finally a Layne Staley video!
Yayy i got a heart :)
@@alicen3162 Here's another friend! Thank you for being here :)
@@CrazySinging wow a double heart- I'm shocked
Control, tone and power is what makes a great singer and no one has all three quite like Staley
I don't understand how he was able to sing when he was so often crouched down, all folded in on himself...
There aren't too many singers that can solicit every emotion I have. This is why I'm here.
Elicit*
@Jerrycantrell_12 you’re not Jerry Cantrell.
@Jerrycantrell_12 obviously.
dude!!! layne, layne, layne!!!!! he needs more recognition. hes one of a kind. i doubt another singer will ever touch this mans sound, not in my lifetime. listen for30 years to AIC and madd season. even after the hooked on heroin time, his voice was so haunting, majestic. so damn lucky to have remembered when he was alive...we couldnt have him forever, but what he left us with is for a lifetime
@Jerrycantrell_12 ALWAYS and FOREVER stand behind yous, I'll make sure my recognition for AIC is spoken!! I'm great!!
Definitely one of the greatest who has ever lived, along with Chester and Chris and Scott.
One of my favourite male vocalists of all time.
1. Jonathan Davis - KoRN
2. Chino Moreno - Deftones
3. Layne Stayle - AIC
4. Chester Bennington - Linkin Park
5. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana
That Love, Hate, Love live performance just simply untouchable level! 🔥 Absolutely my fave 💯 Rest easy Layne 🕊️ Thx for share 🙏🏻 Edit: I subbed for sure ✌🏻
I've been obsessed with it for some time, I finally sang it myself after studying it over and over, and I'm happy with my results, I just hope in time I can get even better at it
He is my favorite singer. And the best singer ever. NO ONE WILL EVER BE BETTER
thanks so much for this! Layne's voice is so damn powerful it blows my mind every time i listen to him
Hands down my favorite vocalist!
Always loved his whole sound. It perfectly resonated with me: hauntingly beautiful.
and he died alone...what a loss of life...
20 years today. RIP Layne, one of the best to ever do it.
I've seen them in Cologne / Germany Oct. '93 with a buddy. First time seeing them live after the two of us had been literally inhaling the Dirt cd for months.
Layne was so intense, my buddy had to leave for a couple songs bc he actually suffered some kind of mental breakdown.
Layne wasn't acting, that was him up there and you could feel it in the audience. Hope he found peace.
He was just insane on the mic, his live vocals are up at the top of any vocal performance
Armchair singer here. I can't get through a lot of alice in chain songs without having to stop. Because I run out of air.
And I have good sustain. Layne was just that damn good.
Plus his range is phenomenal
Facelift is literally one of the greatest albums of all time
I was 20 years old when Facelift was released. I had the lucky opportunity to see them live a couple times. Still have the shirt, ticket stub and guitar pick from the first time I saw them.
Wow... what a singer... what a video. Thanks for producing this, dude.
Your research is impeccable w/awesome quality + finding the rarities on his vocal range. Layne's voice was out of this world in tone and emotion too. Someone else stated something I didn't realize before -- that he could 'croon' like Sinatra. A good ex: Layne performing "Real Thing" - "Live at the Moore".
Thank you very much for this video.
Thank you so much, that made me very happy to know that the research was appreciated 💛 I will check out those performances you mentioned in a little while. I bet Layne was able to do anything he wanted with his voice
I fucking love that one! Definitely feels like a song Layne was just goofing around with, but damn it hooks.
Do Phil Anselmo!
Imagine if he'd stayed alive, and allowed us the privilege of growing tired of him, only to able to fall back in love with him again as our hair turns silver.
One of the best voices of all time.
Miss this guy so much...his voice was searching in everybodies souls...
*LAYNE STALEY WAS A HUGE PART OF MY LIFE... STILL IS... MY FIRST BORN ... HER NAME IS LANEY... R.I.P. LAYNE STALEY*
Put Layne in any rock band & it works. It’s why I believe he’s the best rock vocalist ever.
ok how am i already tearing up? 🥲 missing him forever
Frogs by AIC is a great demonstration of Layne's vocal skills
Layne was and still is the goat
I always thought that Man in the Box performance was the best performance of that song live despite Layne and Jerry completely remixing the lyrics 😂😂😂
Dallas, the Marquee 1990
My all time favourite is without a doubt the seconds from 0:57-1:05 at the song Junkhead from the Album Dirt. Laynes voice is out of this world 👌 Rest in peace and thank you for the best voice in history......
I saw the Dirt tour and was right against the stage. Layne wore his trademark trench coat and had a bottle of Jack at the mix stand. These guys were incredible. I was very saddened when he died.
Damn that's a lifelong memory to cherish. Thousands of us would've loved to be in ur shoes
Chris Cornell definetly brought his A game but Layne brought the table...
AIC Unplugged really shows laynes god given talent as a vocalist...😎..
Layne was also barely there in unplugged he was soul gone just high as fuck. That’s how talented he was
I love that ability to go really high while sustaining what sounds like a really manly howl.
Thank you for this wonderful dissection of one of the most legendary singers of our time.
Do Maynard James Keenan from Tool please and thank you.
I LOVE Layne and this channel too
Thank you so much ❤
No, thank you!!! 💛
Layne was one of the only vocalists that sang better alive, than on record.... He was an entity....🙏🙏🙏🌻
I think most people sound better alive 😅
He does a pretty insane note in Queen of the Rodeo that still blows me away.
Another Seattle hero. RIP you troubled legend. Such an incredible vocal powerhouse.
My old buddy met him in rehab years ago. Said he was such a sweet, caring gent. Said: "I always had hoped he'd get well and was crushed when i heard i was gone".
Ugh hearing love hate love right away breaks my fucking heart it’s absolutely my favorite performance of his and damn dude what an absolute master of his craft. We lost a heavy legend. 😭😭😭😭
Alice in chains is the best band ever
Sebastian Bach next?!
Hell yeah
He had so much heart and soul and pain and power in his voice so original.
Best singer to have ever lived
Layne is still a HUGE inspiration. addiction took him, but his memory will never be denied or forgotten.
thank you a lot for this video. that very important for me. alice in chains favourite group of my brother. he died 3 years ago. i miss him. Layne the best singer for me

I can sing/scream/yell way higher than Layne, with all the angst, grit, vibrato, power, etc., plus more. Do ya honestly think he's other worldly, or is ti marketing? I'm not being funny, it's just it's really not that high.
Layne was a damn fine vocalist (very half Kurdt/half C. Bennington), but he's no Devin Townsend, Maynard Keenan, Freddy Mercury, me, Gavin Rosdale, Daniel Johns, Mike Patton or Elvis.
@@tunesoop7653Go join a/c s if you can really sing it. I'm not joking. I wish all the luck in the future. Hope you kick ass.
@@tunesoop7653 And Devin Townsend, Maynard Keenan, Freddy Mercury, you, Gavin Rosdale, Daniel Johns, Mike Patton or Elvis are no Layne either and they would never be able to sing his songs the way he did. Staley was a human guitar.
What a talent, and such a sad loss. RIP Layne.
Layne didn't sing from his diaphragm, he literally belted out his inner soul to us! His lyrics were deep and the power was effortless and noone could ever match that!! R.I.P old friend, you will always live on through your beautiful music!!
HERE BEFORE THIS ENDS UP IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Hahaha thank you so much for the support!!!!!!
To be fair that whole performance of love hate love live in 90 was incredible
You should do Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, Billy Joel, Sebastian Bach. All suggestions
This man was born perfect: talented, with the most beautiful voice ever, beyond handsome, had fame, money...I can't understand why he went so wrong.
