- In this episode, I traveled to Sound Emporium Studios to produce a song with the top Nashville session players. The song was written by Daniel Tashian and Cecilia Castleman, and the band featured Tom Bukovac (Guitar), Todd Lombardo (Acoustic Guitar), Steve Mackey (Bass), Tim Lauer (Keys), and Chris McHugh (Drums).

For those of you asking when this song is going to be released, this was just a live tracking session with one slide guitar overdub. It was never meant to be released and is a rough mix. Feel free to listen to it on the video. Thanks!
I actually quite enjoyed the song as is, hope i can add it to my playlist soon. Great band all around!
"rough mix" lol. Now you need to explain what's "rough" about this mix, since it sounds perfect to a lot of people. Its better than half the songs on the country top 50, and its definitely better than 80% of the crap on the pop charts.
One person's rough is another person's gem, so just release the damn song.
Although, more of the slide guitar at the end would be not be a bad thing
The “rough mix” but it’s so great to listen.
What about those of us asking for the multitrack files? ;)
@@CoolEndChannel gotta love a "rough mix" that only gets 500k views, lmao. I wonder what the repeats look like. I had to cut the song out of the video to replay it.
I would DEFINITELY love to see more content like this. The process in the studio is fascinating. Beautiful song.
YES - more live action in a studio environment would be a revelation for a lot of us, I think. Also, one of the best-produced videos on this channel yet ;-)
Yes! We hear Rick talking about work in the studio, but he rarely shows us what all goes into recording.
Super interesting
The process yes. Not just the end result. I know lead sheets and the Nashville numbering system and all of that. The interesting thing to me is the creative process of session players. You come in and mull it over and throw out ideas. But as a guitar guy, laying down a track, and thinking it's good. Just to get told to try it again in another way can be frustrating. But in the end, that process, is what makes it fun. You create and expand. Then enjoy your part of the project.
Yes!
Rick, this would make an amazing ongoing series. Get a room full of session players, take a new song by an up-and-coming songwriter, and show the process of making it into a radio-ready demo. Edit each episode down to 20 or 25 minutes. Showcase all the talent, and educate newer musicians about what they can aspire to and how. I would watch every episode, no matter what style of music is being produced.
agreed
💯 % agreed
Agree, but I wouldn't mind the video even being a little longer. The process by which a good song comes together is magical!
Yeah, I agree, although personally I think it'd be interesting to have a bit more focus on the engineering and production--everything from mic'ing and monitoring, to how the project is set up in the box, etc.
Totally agree!!
I love seeing these, Rick. I am 83 yrs old and I played road gigs and did studio work since the sixties, So This felt like old homes week
It's so refreshing to hear this, it´s obviously not overproduced at all (or even produced?) and that just feels human and heartwarming. Felt like hearing an old Fleetwood mac song but with todays quality. Great work from everyone involved. Killer for a "just for fun" thing.
brilliant analogy
There's something magical about this mix. It's not overmixed. Instruments sound natural; I don’t hear processing, I hear just the pure gold of amazing musicians doing their thing. I feel like I’m right there in the studio. This mix sounds gentle and warm, it’s like getting a hug.
It's the API console
Music has been horrible since the loudness wars. There's no dynamic range.
Absolutely true guys.
An hour with Tom would be gold Rick.
Tom, and one with Brent Mason would be great to.
Maybe two
I’ll vote !
That'd be a great interview Rick.
More Uncle Larry
I'm a professional violinist in the SoCal region and that session was not only creamy, but even the ambiance was a breath of fresh air....my next goal -> record in Nashville!
God that was beautiful. We need songs like this on the radio
Sorry, the vapid and soulless corporate boot is now practically fully in charge of everything. Soulful craft and real creative beauty in art is not allowed anymore. "Going forward" it's now only empty CONTENT for bombarding CONSUMERS with. Some kid can make 50 songs using templates on a laptop like that *click*, specially designed to tick all the boxes that our internet data tells us will sell best! So why bother looking for and paying actual artists and craftspeople to create anything of value? That takes too long and they will start wanting to be paid properly...just doesn't make sense for business.
Thank the heavens there is still talent like this! Real music, real instruments, real musicians, nailing it live from the floor. If I listen to it again I know I will cry...
On my 10 or 11th listening now lol Oh my { )
Amen brother!!!
Ripped the audio, cut it, added it to my library, switched on repeat, listened to it on my way to work and arrived with a smile on my face ! (Which doesn't happen that often....)
This is the heart of Nashville -- pros who play just the right thing to make the song all it can be. It would be cool also to see a long-form video of this session to hear the discussion of parts, how they decided what to put in and what to leave out. That in-between discussion when the individual parts have been worked out and everyone has to come together into one cohesive final product - that's the stuff so many amateur players haven't experienced. It's the difference between just playing your part well and playing for the song.
This ^^^
this, I could watch 2 hours of this, put all the footage out!
Ditto
Yes!
There’s probably less discussion than you’d think. These guys know what parts work
I cant tell you Rick, how encouraging this is. Real music, on real instruments by people with talent and passion, who know how to pass that passion down to an audience. I sometimes lose hope listening to popular music, but I hear this more and more, especially with young people; musicians realizing how rewarding it is to channel their emotions through the act of writing and playing real music. Lovely song, beautifully and simply done, and the process was wonderful to watch...
I love this so much. Please do more of these. There is a deep hunger for this out there. Thank you for your wonderful channel.
Uncle Larry got me through the pandemic. Tom is a musical treasure trove.
Tom is a true treasure. I’ve been playing guitar and writing parts for 26 years and I’ve learned more from Tom in the last 2 years, than I’ve learned in the last 15. Love that guy.
Beautiful song and great sound of the instruments. Love to see more videos like this one. Really enjoy your channel, Rick 🙂
Love it! Yes more content like this please! Love learning about the process, and the working together.
The drummer. Chris Mchugh, played beautifully throughout, accentuating tempo changes, moods, timing etc. making it seamless. The epitome of not missing a beat. Yes, please do more!
yup.. he stuck out to me too... BRILLIANT drumming! Bass player was also stellar.
Drumming being so visual and all, I love to check out the micro decisions a drummer takes throughout the song. Chris McHugh is brilliant at this. His fills are tasty and have each their own little build ups, his stops and pick-ups are well chosen (like omitting to play the Bass Drum on the stop) , he carries the song and the intensity without using too much cymbals.. He takes all these decisions in one swoop. Pretty amazing.
He knows Patty Boone well :)
He also played in Whiteheart. Check out his killer drum solo in “Light A Candle.”
He was what stuck out for me as well … i definitely appreciated his no over kill and almost machine like timing and fills that felt perfect .
One thing that perhaps gets overlooked in these videos is just how good it looks. The lighting for example is sublime. Rick has definitely got visual production skills along with everything else.
Sure Rick, good stuff all around. Eddie
You never cease to amaze us with your surprises. Loved it and sure would want more of this in future, Thank you Rick!
Yes, I'd love to see more content like this! The song is also phenomenal
Would love to see a full length interview with Tom. Rick always brings out the best in his guests!
Rick, you ABSOLUTELY need to make more content like this!! This is what I have been waiting for from you for such a long time. Thank you for this! Cheers!
Yes more content like this would be great! Love to see session players play! All the musician had a perfect pocket they filled in the 100% for sure! Great video Rick
Definitely more of this!!!!!!! Loved the process and the song.
So glad you featured Uncle Larry. He is a living gift to the community.
Truth
This is a wonderful tune! Well sung well played and well produced! I love it! No gimmicks real players, what a concept😅! It's just wonderful to see real musicians playing real music! Hope you produce the album Rick😅😂 I'll buy it!
I second this notion...💚🎸
Beautiful = a real song with actual musicians, a bridge, a surprise chord, a guitar solo, perfect drum fills and hits, airy vocals without fluff runs, and a final double chorus with a build up … that was really nice. I’d buy it!
That's counrty
Formulaic like all country songs. Once you've heard one of them you've heard them all.
@@ratatatuff There's always that one guy.
@@ZiddersRooFurry He's not lying..... it does sound like every pop country song.
Beautiful song, but what amazing me is the speed to sync all together in few hours!!!!
Yes. More of this content! Very inspiring and informative
Oh my word, yes! I'd love to see more of this stuff. The individual musician's knowledge and comfort level with the process is inspiring. Great song, too!!
The potential of this format is practically limitless. There are so many directions and angles you could take. Talking to the session players, the writers, the engineers, everyone involved. Not to mention showcasing fresh new (or even old) talent, and on and on.
Please, More Tom Bukovac , I love seeing inside the studio and I love Tom’s playing
Simply beautiful! Thank you for sharing Rick!
Love this video a lot Rick! Please do more! Thank you!!!
Yes! Please! More! No pressure, no commercial interests, no targets. Nothing can beat a bunch of pros just making fine music in a relaxed atmosphere.
that waS REALLY amazing
You are soooooo right
Great stuff; more please
Damn!!! That was great! Keep up the good work and I would love to see more of this type of work. I would enjoy hearing what each person's impression of the project was.
Your channel is a gift to all of us.
Yes, please more of this kind of content, watching how you put together a track.
How can this not be a #1 hit on the country charts the harmonies are unreal the production is perfect as a musician this makes me happy happy happy 🙂
Musicianship is top notch, song is just average.
It really needs a pro mix and mastering first!
That plonky piano is double the volume it should be, and the vocals lack enough conpression there are some words almost inaudible.
Song beautiful, performances great, mixdown 😖
This IS what’s on country radio RIGHT NOW. This average song is as good as anything else at the moment.
Maybe that says more about the state of “country”? Maybe too much Western and not enough Country.
@@wizrom3046 I hate compression. ya know who else hated it? Bruce Swedien. Good enough for me.
@@wizrom3046 It's art, wrap it up I'd buy it for what it is.
Being in Nashville, I can tell you these are first-call guys, from Buckley to Daniel to Tom. And Cecilia is an up and coming talent I’ve written with that is going to be huge soon!
Cecilia has not at all gotten out of her shell, I am afraid. She will need serious, serious coaching, and much blood, sweat and tears, for anything to happen as a singer, leave alone as performer. In fact, she may not even have that ambition... but just to write.
I would like the mix to up the volume a bit on the vocals.
@@fredericlindennothing wrong with that, writing is where the money is, anyway.
So cool, I'd love to see and hear more content like this. Thank you!!!
Oh Rick, I'm in love with all of this. Man, we just don't get quality like this in the UK. I don't think I can press the subscribe button enough times. That song, setup, everything just fantastic. Thank you so much from us here over the other side of the pond! Thank you. A+++++++
Yes definitely
And please longer with more details about arrangement and coming up with parts
Arranging, writing, recording, mixing, mastering, actual interviews with the musicians (as originally planned)... there could easily be several more videos from this single session, each an hour or two long, and I hope there will be.
yes exactly this. underrated comment
Tom Bukovac aka (Uncle Larry) is a great inspiration and his feel on the axe is second to none. Thank you Rick and yes please, more like this.
Yes, would like to see this kind of video again in the future, keep it coming. It's awesome👍👏😊!
Yes Rick, PLEASE give us more content like this!!! It is so amazing to watch pro studio players in action. It's also educational. Thank you for this!
How about we just go into the studio and bang out a perfectly played and recorded new song in a couple hours?? Holy crap this is fantastic.
We DEFINITELY need more content like this! As someone who is struggling to find their way in the world of recording this kind of content is priceless. Thank you!
Sounds so good...the process and inside look is priceless. Thank You Rick.
Love it. Super cool. Great approach, fitting all this into 8min. More please. Appreciate the intros of the pros here too. Love the song and result too!
Oh my God, REAL music. What a shot of fresh air this is for all of us. More please, yes thank you!
nothing better than a pretentious "real music" snob
YEAH, MAN, REAL MUSIC! Like in the good old days. Ain't no good music anymore these days.
@@autury-5703 Seriously, let's hear it for fake music, amarite?
Generic pop song is real music? Kind of a weird thing to gatekeep on lol
@@autury-5703 clearly you are a DJ by trade.
Of all the musicians, the drummer is who stands out for me. Those drum breaks are just what the song needs! Great video
Least favorite for me. Too mechanical. Might be he was a little loud in the mix and/or too live (not enough reverb) for that type of song. Definitely talented fwiw.
@@keithwingo514 Mostly agree. Session drummers almost seem too in the pocket a lot of times. Not enough feeling. Favorites for me was rhythm and acoustic guitars. Parts they picked fit perfectly with a few creative touches.
overall I agree, but there are so many Pat Boone Debbie Boone’s throughout the track 😂
Yeah Man, that struck me too!
Very standard stuff, and really most any seasoned drummer would play it exactly the same...as that is what the song called for.
Love it Rick! Do more of these please!
Really enjoyed this video and yes, would not mind seeing more like this. Excellent!
This would be the ultimate series with Rick producing stellar musicians and explaining the process from the producer's and engineer's perspectives.
Rick, that was SO MUCH FUN! I just love watching people who are really, really good at what they do. (This includes you, my friend!) It's a great song, too.
More please!
Love to see more of this, it was inspiring!!
Love this project. Please do some more of these.
Freaking unbelievable!!! More more more! You could develop an entire You Tube channel with just that concept. I'd watch it everyday! Great players and vocals...Buko is in a class by himself. Everything he plays is so spot on and tasty...channeled right from his soul with no flash. Perfect. Thank you Rick. Amazing idea. Big fan!
What a drummer. Everyone else, amazing. Looks like you’ve landed on your feet, Uncle Rick.
Yeah the drums are particularly great. Can't imagine a better drum sound.
I thought myself the same thing. Great, great groove.
@@mateusbez2669 Yep, and all the stuff he leaves out, like the last downbeat. Classic.
Fabulous. PLEASE, Rick, more content like this! I will play it for my audio students. I'm a professor who teaches advanced audio, and this is SO helpful.
I was invited up to a Nashville recording session by Tom Wild, a 30+ year session vet. He was both BJ Thomas's & Billy Joe Royal's band leader and featured on PBS's "The Session Players" series to boot. . Great fun watching and sitting next to Tom and watching him record a segment of a gospel track. Tom looked at his watch and said to watch as the red spotlight was about to buzz. Almost to the second the light brightened and he buzzed 2 black gal backup singers. Right in the vocal room they went, shut the door and looked at the chart of a song they had never seen before. They read all the notes, ask each other which part they felt like singing, high/ low and said, "We're ready. Music cued and away they went. . 1st try, and Tommy says,"I think you got it." One gal said check meas 24. I think I missed a note. Rewind, Anadise Pitch correction showed a note barely flat, under the line. Tommy and at looked at each other and could not hear it. He said, "Do you want a 2nd take?". She replied, "Yea, just in case". Tommy," Rolling"... Take 2 :She actually pitch corrected her vocal. Tom and I just looked in amazement at it on the computer screen. She said, "Yup! We nailed it!" Tom, "Yea, perfect, ladies!" And out the booth and door they went. Tom started laughing at my flabbergasted expression (since that whole episode was less than 15 minutes) and quipped, "Yea, the bar's set pretty high here in Nashville". Uh, yea, I guess so! Whew! Somehow, I managed to survived a lovely afternoon w/ a very gracious host and studio pro, to say the least.
now that's something to write home about. epic
Cool story. Professional musicianship must be a joy to behold. Can I make a suggestion to clarify what everyone's jobs are in the studio: 'Gals' are in this case, 'Vocalists'
Love anecdotes like yours. Makes a non-musician like me feel like an insider.
Now, if only some good music came out of Nashville.
I don't think anyone misunderstood what he was saying.@@sianwarwick633
I love the "less is more" approach. No vocal histrionics, no guitar wizzardry. Everything fitted nicely into place, straight 4:4 drums, a bit of Rhodes for layering, nice rumbling bass, some acoustic coloring, lil bit of tasty slide guitar, lovely vocals, all subtly accentuated by a second singer just a bit back from the mike, and LOTS of space.
Yes, it's as if these people know secrets that are beyond description and subtly...
well its about the song. its about the music. its not about the "personality" or the perfect voice. the music comes first.
@@dobieprimewhat does that even mean? Are you saying if the song is complex or there is any kind of virtuosity to the musicianship, it’s not about the song?
Rush don’t play for the song? For example. I never understood exactly what that means.
What are the chances that this song is going to be listened to or talked about 20 years from now?
I agree. Most music today is so over produced because the producers have too many things at their disposal with Pro Tools, etc.
@@brianshenk6912 this song wont be talked about in a week from now. perfectly fitting for a bottom shelf soap commercial. but no more. all great musicians on this session and brilliantly played. all super tasteful but totally bland. 6 world class artisans but no artist in the studio.
I love this type of content. The musicians creating on the spot gives the music the sense of spontaneity. Pro players equals pro dynamics and sound. Great stuff Rick. Thank you.
Absolute beautiful track! Beautiful studio! Vocals are smooth as butter!
Talented, real musicians playing real instruments and singing with real voices! American music is still alive!! This was fantastic. Hat's off to Tom Bukovac for coming up with the idea. Please do this again.
"real instruments"
Ahahahahah!!
check out Larry's Country Diner yt channel if you think American music is dead
Love watching these talented folks record a song from the ground up. Yes, more of this, please!
The process of writing, producing, playing the parts, and then mix/master can be SO time-consuming and agonizing at times. I'd consider myself a "good musician" on multiple instruments, but THIS video shows the true talent of those who can do in an afternoon what would take even a "good musician" a week or more. Thank you Rick for letting us into this world, and hats off to ALL the session players who are part of creating this type of magic every day. The world is a better place because of you.
YES! I would love to see more videos on the recording, mixing, and mastering of music.
An in-depth interview with Chris McHugh is DYING to be made! The man is an absolute beast,, on of the best pocket drummers of our time! Make it happen, Rick.
I didn't know much about him--then I heard that beginning fill into groove--borderline unfair to be at that level...
Yeah, the drum work was spot on and fascinating for me.
This. Chris McHugh has credits a mile long. Not to mention was the engine behind Keith Urbans sound
Funny, I didn’t really like his drumming
The musicians really impressed me, top notch professionals every single one of them! I LOVE her voice, lots of soul, beautiful! Well done y'all!
Wow! Yes, more content like that! Great to hear great new music - so rare...
Sending love from the UK...brilliant vid! Great to see this Rick, please do more. great song BTW!
YES!! more!! Please interview Mr. Bukovac, it would be amazing, a harmonic convergence, thank you Mr. Beato!
I could be wrong but I think he has done a short interview with Tom. Make more music with him!!!!!
Lot of touchstones in this one for me. I've done a lot of time on that studio, last time being an Elvis Costello record that T Bone Burnett produced. Bukovac is a friend and Juanita, the studio manager, is like family to me. Great to see Rick do this and to have the nuts and bolts of a Nashville session highlighted for the curious.
Stalking you. Lol!!! Hey!
Rick that was absolutely beautiful, played perfectly by incredible musicians and well produced! More of this please 👏🏼
Awesome video and great to watch and hear such talent coming together for the session!
Loved the session song. The young lady had a wonderful voice. The musicians were all good, tight groove. Yes, would love to see more like this!
Kinda reminded me of Fleetwood Mac
thought the same
drums especially (bass too a little bit)
and the male/female tight vocals
Wow. Great to see the Nasville pros do what they do behind the scenes.
We need to see more of this.
😊
Absolutely amazing ❤ Love the song, and everything about this Rick! Keep doing it ✌️❤️🎸
please produce more content like this. I absolutely love it. It is so inspiring. thx
This could be a great series. Rick producing a song with local musicians in some of the great music cities all around the country.
I’ve listened to this song about 20 times in the past few days. I love it! It should be released on ITunes and on the radio. Thank you
Very few songs get repeat listens from me like this one has. I think that Rick has accidentally stumbled onto a hit.
I found it an hour ago and I’ve listened to it 4 times and sent it to friends. Great track.
This is amazing!!! Yes, please more content like this!!!
This was amazing, Rick. Yes, more please! They were all fantastic but for some reason the older I get the more I appreciate great, tasteful drumming, and this fellow really nailed it.
Yes indeed! Stellar drum professional.
Terrific drum sound. Great ambience on everyone.
Loved Cecilia's voice. Wonderful production. Yes, please more of these
this is hauntingly pristine recording and cannot forget the music/sound quality/how simple and touching it is. As musician I love this kind of content please do creaTe MORE OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was awesome. Yes, please do more videos like this.
Yes yes yes. More of this, and in greater detail. What a great sounding track. Must have been an ace producer!
The instruments sounded fantastic and her voice was just lovely.
Simply wonderful. Thank you.
Chris McHugh! Been a fan since his Whiteheart days...such a great drummer! Great video Rick...more of this!
You beat me to it. Loved "No Taboo" and "Let the Kingdom Come". I was trying to remember if it was Chris on "Little Drummer Boy" or not; maybe you can remind me.
Same here with w Whiteheart, I’m looking at the Hotline vinyl across the room that I got when I was 12 in 1986!
I would love to see more! Thank you Rick!
Rick thank you so much for allways bringing great content, it´s an amazing touching song. I like to hear more about the players and their influences
Great song! Beautiful vocal and harmony! For me it had a Fleetwood Mac feel, especially the drums. I'll listen to this again.
OMG, same here! But also those Christine-ish fender Rhodes keys and the guitarwork at the end evoked Mac for me.
First thing I thought was Fleetwood and I really liked it 😊
yeah- snare tone sounds like mick fleetwood rumors for sure
Yes for sure more of this. I'd love to hear more of the musicians' process of working out their parts, a more detailed look at how the chart is constructed, how much of everything is set up already beforehand in the studio regarding miking, headphones etc. All the good stuff!
Exactly what I was looking for as well.
Definitely. I'd also be interested in the mixing process for it, and whether it's as focused as the recording moment or if it's a bit more relaxed.
Amazing content!!! We want more! THANK YOU!
Rick, this was very entertaining! I love to watch session work done by the pros. Thank you!
Such TASTE on the drumfill at 7:41. Wow!
Ditto for the bass fills! The power of restraint
Yes! The drums are perfect, as is everything else
@doubledecker1094 Chris "Sticks" Mchugh is on the Mount Rushmore of Session players in Nashville. It does not get much cleaner and tasty than him.
Chris McHugh has been one of my favs for a long, long time.
I'm in awe that Chris McHugh (the drummer) has over 3200 credited songs. Thats insane.
It looks and sounds effortlles but only we know what it takes to make it sound and look as it is here. True craftsmanship and talent!!! This is gold!! Beautifull song.
i agree wholeheartedly
some randos poo pooing the song but this tune really feels like a top shelf archetype for this genre
when top pros are in their element they make it look/sound really easy
LOVE to watch pros at work. Keep it coming!
Beautiful song and amazing musicians! I enjoyed every single instrument, amazing sound on each one. This song remained in my head, this is real music, reminds me the 90's. Please more of this!
That looked fun! Definitely more of these but with MORE BEHIND THE SCENES in the sausage making!
Great song. Cecilia has a beautiful voice. Daniel did some beautiful and intricate harmonies as well. Beautifully done.
