  • I found out last-minute that Willowbank had a test and tune session happening and I decided to sign up with the Mitsubishi Magna Ralliart!
As it turns out, drag racing a FWD car has its challenges, but in the end I achieved a pretty respectable time 😁 #motoringbox

After looking at the footage one thing I will definitely try next time is just leaving it in 3rd gear and hitting limiter over the line. It'd probably end up being quicker compared to shifting into 4th!

100% - I wasn’t sure if you’d have enough revs to hold third but it’s worth a go next time. A shift must add a few tenths at least - you might get the elusive 14 second pass! 😁

Handbrake is your best friend when launching a manual Magna. I had a TL manual with a 380 engine and it ran a 13.9@102mph. The best way I found to launch was handbrake on then slightly ride the clutch just before the light go green then handbrake down and slightly ride the clutch so it doesn’t bog down. This way there isn’t a sudden amount of torque from dumping the clutch and much less chance of wheel spin as that will kill your time the most.
Also loving the Magna build, I miss mine 😢

Looking at the videos, you'll be able to pick up time but you'll need to drive the car like you hate it, so the question is, how much are those few 10ths really worth?
You might 60 better if you very slightly extend the length of time it takes to let the clutch out - it's not good for the clutch but might assist in reducing axle tramp.
Also you need to just smash the gears through like someone else is paying for the box... I'm not sure how robust the boxes are in those, up to you if you think saving a 10th on each shift is worth the extra risk.

Great effort, it's a good experience! That wheel hop kills time a lot. You'd be surprised how just taking off with less aggression helps in that situation. I only drag raced motorcycles and the best approach was to just ride it off the line cleanly and feed the power in. Faster passes every time over the high rev feeding it clutch method although that works for higher end drag applications. You've got the bug now mate!

Been many years since I did the old Wednesday night test and tune. I remember taking my old MX5 down there and running a consistent 16.8 for my runs, which was apparently the quoted time from the factory, so I was reasonably chuffed. Doing a burnout though hastened the demise of diff number 2 in that car (stock 1.6, running the rather fragile 6 inch ring gear), but it was a good excuse to up to a torsen.
I reckon with practice you could get consistent launches. But front wheel drive is a bit of a bugger to get to that threshold where you have just enough wheel slip to help bring the revs up, but not quite enough to fall over into wheel spin and wheel hop.

Great job Sean. It's great fun and very addictive and as others have said everyone is a novice at one time.. Definitely agree that softer on the loud pedal at launch will yield a better result as you've got quite a bit of power going through those two front tyres..
Looking forward to what you bring us next.. Cheers mate 😎👍

My car runs 10s and it is very difficult to get a clean run without wheelspin.
On the road it is constantly trying to kill me. In the wet, I don't bring it out.

Hey I spy'd an i30N sedan (Elantra N here in the States)
I think you did pretty good all things considered 👍 Does your car have traction control? What was your launch rpm?

No TC unfortunately, I was launching around 2k!

      @MotoringBox gotcha 😉
I wonder if 1-1.5K launch might have been better.
Can't wait to see the XR go down the track🏁🏁
